The ability to control the chirality of physical devices is of great scientific and technological importance, from investigations of topologically protected edge states in condensed matter systems to wavefront engineering, isolation, and unidirectional communication. When dealing with large networks of oscillators, the control over the chirality of the bulk states becomes significantly more complicated and requires complex apparatus for generating asymmetric coupling or artificial gauge fields. Here we present a new approach for precise control over the chirality of a triangular array of hundreds of symmetrically-coupled lasers, by introducing a weak non-Hermitian complex potential, requiring only local on-site control of loss and frequency. In the unperturbed network, lasing states with opposite chirality (staggered vortex and staggered anti-vortex) are equally probable. We show that by tuning the complex potential to an exceptional point, a nearly pure chiral lasing state is achieved. While our approach is applicable to any oscillators network, we demonstrate how the inherent non-linearity of the lasers effectively pulls the network to the exceptional point, making the chirality extremely resilient against noises and imperfections.
Donut-shaped laser radiation, carrying orbital angular momentum, namely optical vortex, recently was shown to provide vectorial mass transfer, twisting transiently molten material and producing chiral micro-scale structures on surfaces of different bulk materials upon their resolidification. In this paper, we show for the first time that nanosecond laser vortices can produce chiral nanoneedles (nanojets) of variable size on thin films of such plasmonic materials, as silver and gold films, covering thermally insulating substrates. Main geometric parameters of the produced chiral nanojets, such …
We show, both classically and quantum mechanically, enantioselective orientation of gas phase chiral molecules excited by laser fields with twisted polarization. Counterintuitively, the induced orientation, whose direction is laser controllable, does not disappear after the excitation, but stays approximately constant long after the end of the laser pulses, behavior unique to chiral systems. We computationally demonstrate this long-lasting orientation using propylene oxide molecules (${\rm CH_{3}CHCH_{2}O}$, or PPO) as an example, and consider two kinds of fields with twisted polarization: a p…
Enantioselective orientation of chiral molecules excited by a shaped picosecond laser pulse and a delayed femtosecond pulse is considered. Using quantum mechanical simulations, we demonstrate a strong field-free enantioselective orientation along the laser propagation direction. In addition, we use a classical model to reproduce the enantioselective orientation. Moreover, the analysis of the corresponding classical system allows understanding the qualitative features of the induced enantioselective orientation. The strong enantioselective orientation may be used for the separation of chiral en…
Featured by prominent flexibility and fidelity in producing sophisticated stereoscopic structures transdimensionally, three-dimensional (3D) laser printing technique has vastly extended the toolkit for delivering diverse functional devices. Yet chiral nanoemitters heavily resorting to artificial structures that manifest efficient emission and tightly confined light-mater interactions simultaneously remains alluring but dauntingly challenging for this technique at this moment. In this work, we assert the chiral photoluminescence is implemented from silver nanostructures of optical duality in on…
We explore a pure optical method for enantioselective orientation of chiral molecules by means of laser fields with twisted polarization. Several field implementations are considered, including a pair of delayed cross-polarized laser pulses, an optical centrifuge, and polarization shaped pulses. The underlying classical orientation mechanism common for all these fields is discussed, and its operation is demonstrated for a range of chiral molecules of various complexity: hydrogen thioperoxide (${\rm HSOH}$), propylene oxide (${\rm CH_{3}CHCH_{2}O}$) and ethyl oxirane (${\rm CH_{3}CH_{2}CHCH_{2}…
We present a comprehensive study of enantioselective orientation of chiral molecules excited by a pair of delayed cross-polarized femtosecond laser pulses. We show that by optimizing the pulses' parameters, a significant (~ 10%) degree of enantioselective orientation can be achieved at zero and at five kelvin rotational temperatures. This study suggests a set of reasonable experimental conditions for inducing and measuring strong enantioselective orientation. The strong enantioselective orientation and the wide availability of the femtosecond laser systems required for the proposed experiments…
Molecular chirality is an omnipresent phenomenon of fundamental significance in physics, chemistry and biology. For this reason, search for novel techniques for enantioselective control, detection and separation of chiral molecules is of particular importance. It has been recently predicted that laser fields with twisted polarization may induce persistent enantioselective field-free orientation of chiral molecules. Here we report the first experimental observation of this phenomenon using propylene oxide molecules ($\mathrm{CH_{3}CHCH_{2}O}$, or PPO) spun by an optical centrifuge - a laser pul…
Laser irradiation of various materials including metals, polymers and semiconductors with vortex beams was previously shown to twist transiently molten matter providing the direct easy-to-implement way to obtain chiral surface relief. Specifically for metals, this effect was attributed to transfer of an optical angular momentum (OAM) carrying by the vortex beam. In this Letter, we report the formation of twisted metal nanoneedles on the surface of silver and gold metal films under their irradiation with zero-OAM laser beam having spiral-shape lateral intensity distribution. Our comparative exp…
Chirality is ubiquitous in nature and of fundamental importance in science. The present work focuses on understanding the conditions required to modify the chirality during ultrafast electronic motion by bringing enantiomers out-of-equilibrium. Different kinds of ultrashort linearly-polarised laser pulses are used to drive an ultrafast charge migration process by the excitation of a small number of low-lying excited states from the ground electronic state of S- and R-epoxypropane. Control over chiral electron dynamics is achieved by choosing the different orientations of the linearly polarised…
Chiral discrimination with high harmonic generation (cHHG method) has been introduced in the recent work by R. Cireasa et al ( Nat. Phys. 11, 654 - 658, 2015). In its original implementation, the cHHG method works by detecting high harmonic emission from randomly oriented ensemble of chiral molecules driven by elliptically polarized field, as a function of ellipticity. Here we discuss future perspectives in the development of this novel method, the ways of increasing chiral dichroism using tailored laser pulses, new detection schemes involving high harmonic phase measurements, and concentratio…
The generation of chiral laser emission offers promising opportunities for modern photonic applications and the study of chiral light-mater interactions. Despite the great process made in recent years, the direct generation of chiral lasers with controllable chirality remains challenging in a microcavity. This study reports a strategy to control the emission chirality of whispering-gallery-mode organic microlasers with topological-structured chiral liquid crystal droplets. The findings suggest that the topological transformations in a microdroplet can induce different optical chirality strengt…
We provide a detailed theoretical analysis of molecular rotational excitation by a chiral pulse train -- a sequence of linearly polarised pulses with the polarisation direction rotating from pulse to pulse by a controllable angle. Molecular rotation with a preferential rotational sense (clockwise or counter-clockwise) can be excited by this scheme. We show that the directionality of the rotation is caused by quantum interference of different excitation pathways. The chiral pulse train is capable of selective excitation of molecular isotopologues and nuclear spin isomers in a mixture. We demons…
We investigate topological lasers in combination of nonlinear, non-Hermitian and topological lattice systems based on a quench dynamics starting from one site. We consider explicitly the topological laser in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with two topological edge states and the second-order topological laser in the breathing Kagome lattice with three topological corner states. Once we stimulate any one site, after a delay, all sites belonging to the topological edge or corner states begin to emit stable laser light depending on the density of states, although no wave propagation is obse…
We investigate laser emission at the interface of a topological and trivial phases with loss and gain. The system is described by a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with site-dependent hopping parameters. We study numerically and analytically the interface states. The ground state is described by the Jackiw-Rebbi mode with a pure imaginary energy, reflecting the non-Hermiticity of the system. It is strictly localized only at the A sites. We also find a series of analytic solutions of excited states based on SUSY quantum mechanics, where the A and B sites of the bipartite lattice form SUSY partners. …
In this paper, we study the conditions under which on-site dissipations can induce non-Hermitian skin modes in non-Hermitian systems. When the original Hermitian Hamiltonian has spinless time-reversal symmetry, it is impossible to have skin modes; on the other hand, if the Hermitian Hamiltonian has spinful time-reversal symmetry, skin modes can be induced by on-site dissipations under certain circumstance. As a concrete example, we employ the Rice-Mele model to illustrate our results. Furthermore, we predict that the skin modes can be detected by the chiral tunneling effect, that is, the tunne…
Organic circularly polarized (CP) lasers have received increasing attention due to their future photoelectric applications. Here, we demonstrate a CP laser from a pure organic crystal-filled microcavity without any chiral molecules or chiral structures. Benefited from the giant anisotropy and excellent laser gain of organic crystals, optical Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling effect can be induced and is conductive to the CP laser in such microcavities. The maximum dissymmetry factor of the CP lasing with opposite helicities reached, is as high as 1.2. Our strategy may provide a new idea f…
We theoretically study topological laser operation in a bosonic Harper-Hofstadter model featuring a saturable optical gain. Crucial consequences of the chirality of the lasing edge modes are highlighted, such as a sharp dependence of the lasing threshold on the geometrical shape of the amplifying region and the possibility of ultraslow relaxation times and of convectively unstable regimes. The different unstable regimes are characterized in terms of spatio-temporal structures sustained by noise and a strong amplification of a propagating probe beam is anticipated to occur in between the convec…
We observe Wannier-Stark localization in curved photonic lattices, realized using arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides. By correctly tuning the strength of inter-site coupling in the lattice, we observe that Wannier-Stark states become increasingly localized, and eventually fully localized to one site, as the curvature of the lattice is increased. We then demonstrate that tunneling can be successfully restored in the lattice by applying a sinusoidal modulation to the lattice position, an effect that is a direct analogue of photon-assisted tunneling. This precise tuning of the tunn…
We experimentally demonstrate the existence of non dispersive solitary waves associated with a 2$π$ phase rotation in a strongly multimode ring semiconductor laser with coherent forcing. Similarly to Bloch domain walls, such structures host a chiral charge. The numerical simulations based on a set of effective Maxwell-Bloch equations support the experimental evidence that only one sign of chiral charge is stable, which strongly affects the motion of the phase solitons. Furthermore, the reduction of the model to a modified Ginzburg Landau equation with forcing demonstrates the generality of the…
The peculiarities of defect modes and reflection spectra of chiral photonic crystals (CPC) with an isotropic defect for various thicknesses of the defect layer was investigated. The peculiarities of the spectra of photonic density of the state (DOS) and those of the intensity at the center of the defect were investigated, too. It was shown that there is one more possibility of tuning of laser emission - by the change of the defect layer thickness - in CPCs doped with laser dyes (with resonance atoms) and with an isotropic defect. It was shown that the given system can work as a tunable narrow-…
Combining topologically-protected chiral light transport and laser amplification gives rise to topological lasers, whose operation is immune to fabrication imperfections and defects, uncovering the role of topology in a novel nonlinear non-Hermitian regime. We study a topological laser based on the photonic Haldane model with selective pumping of chiral edge modes described by saturable gain. We investigate elementary excitations around the mean-field steady state and their consequences for the coherence properties. In particular, we show that the hybridization of chiral edge modes gives rise …
We study interaction of generic asymmetric molecules with a pair of strong time-delayed short laser pulses with crossed linear polarizations. We show that such an excitation not only provides unidirectional rotation of the most polarizable molecular axis, but also induces a directed torque along this axis, which results in the transient orientation of the molecules. The asymmetric molecules are chiral in nature and different molecular enantiomers experience the orienting action in opposite directions causing out-of-phase oscillation of their dipole moments. The resulting microwave radiation wa…
We propose a novel approach to site-resolved detection of a 2D gas of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. A near resonant laser beam is coherently scattered by the atomic array and its interference pattern is holographically recorded by superimposing it with a reference laser beam on a CCD chip. Fourier transformation of the recorded intensity pattern reconstructs the atomic distribution in the lattice with single-site resolution. The holographic detection method requires only a few hundred scattered photons per atom in order to achieve a high reconstruction fidelity. Therefore, additional …
Strong-field light-matter interactions initiate a wide range of phenomena in which the quantumpaths of electronic wavepackets can be manipulated by tailoring the laser field. Among the electronsreleased by a strong laser pulse from atomic and molecular targets, some are subsequently drivenback to the vicinity of the ionic core by the oscillating laser field. The trajectories of these returningelectrons are bent towards the core by the ionic potential, an effect known as Coulomb focusing. This process, studied over the past two decades, has been associated with the long range influenceof the Cou…
We analyze experimentally and theoretically the spatio-temporal dynamics of a highly multimode semiconductor laser with coherent optical injection. Due to the particular geometry of the device (a 1~m long ring cavity), the multimode dynamics can be resolved in real time and we observe stable chiral solitons and domain dynamics. The experiment is analyzed in the framework of a set of effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations. We analyze the stability of stationary solutions and simulate both the complete model and a reduced rate equation model. This allows us to predict domain shrinking a…
Ultrafast imaging of molecular chirality is a key step towards the dream of imaging and interpreting electronic dynamics in complex and biologically relevant molecules. Here, we propose a new ultrafast chiral phenomenon exploiting recent advances in electron optics allowing access to the orbital angular momentum of free electrons. We show that strong-field ionization of a chiral target with a few-cycle linearly polarized 800 nm laser pulse yields photoelectron vortices, whose chirality reveals that of the target, and we discuss the mechanism underlying this phenomenon. Our work opens new persp…
A two-site Ising model is implemented as an injection-locked laser network consisting of a single master laser and two mutually coupled slave lasers. We observed ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders in the in-phase and out-of-phase couplings between the two slave lasers. Their phase difference is locked to either 0 or p even if the coupling path is continuously modulated. The system automatically selects the oscillation frequency to satisfy the in-phase or out-of-phase coupling condition, when the mutual coupling dominates over the injection-locking by the master laser.
We theoretically investigate measurement-based feedback control of a laser-driven one-dimensional atomic chain interfaced with a nanofiber. The interfacing leads to all-to-all interactions among the atomic emitters and induces chirality, i.e. the directional emission of photons into a preferred guided mode of the nanofiber. In the setting we consider, the measurement of guided light -- conducted either by photon counting or through homodyne detection of the photocurrent quadratures -- is fed back into the system through a modulation of the driving laser field. We investigate how this feedback …
Controlling the polarization state of electromagnetic radiation enables the investigation of fundamental symmetry properties of matter through chiroptical processes. Many strategies have been developed to reveal structural or dynamical information about chiral molecules, from the microwave to the extreme ultraviolet range. Most schemes employ circularly or elliptically polarized radiation, and more sophisticated configurations involve, for instance, light pulses with time-varying polarization states. In all these schemes, the polarization state of light is always considered as constant over on…
Atoms are usually thought of as achiral objects. However, one can construct superpositions of atomic states that are chiral [1]. Here we show how to excite such superpositions with tailored light fields both in the weak-field and strong-field regimes, using realistic laser parameters. First, we use time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) simulations to demonstrate the creation of a time-dependent bound chiral wavepacket in sodium atoms. Second, we show how the time-dependent handedness of this wavepacket can be probed by photoelectron circular dichroism, in spite of the central symmetry of …
We reveal the existence of polarizing quantum phases for the enantiomers of cold, interacting chiral molecules in an optical helicity lattice by means of an extended Bose-Hubbard model. These recently proposed lattices have sites with alternating helicity which exert a discriminatory force on chiral molecules with different handedness. In our study of the phase diagram we find that a strong dipolar repulsion between molecules results in the separation of left and right enantiomers.
