In this paper, we study the order of a maximal clique in an amply regular graph with a fixed smallest eigenvalue by considering a vertex that is adjacent to some (but not all) vertices of the maximal clique. As a consequence, we show that if a strongly regular graph contains a Delsarte clique, then the parameter $μ$ is either small or large.
Furthermore, we obtain a cubic polynomial that assures that a maximal clique in an amply regular graph is either small or large (under certain assumptions). Combining this cubic polynomial with the claw-bound, we rule out an infinite family of feasible parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)$ for strongly regular graphs. Lastly, we provide tables of parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)$ for nonexistent strongly regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue $-4, -5, -6$ or $-7$.
We apply an improvement of the Delsarte LP-bound to give a new proof of the non-existence of finite projective planes of order 6, and uniqueness of finite projective planes of order 7. The proof is computer aided, and it is also feasible to apply to higher orders like 8, 9 and, with further improvements, possibly 10 and 12.
We present an extension of the Delsarte linear programming method. For several dimensions it yields improved upper bounds for kissing numbers and for spherical codes. Musin's recent work on kissing numbers in dimensions three and four can be viewed in our framework.
The linear programming (LP) bound of Delsarte can be applied to several problems in various branches of mathematics. We describe a general Fourier analytic method to get a slight improvement on this bound. We then apply our method to the problem of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) to prove that the Fourier family $F(a,b)$ in dimension 6 cannot be extended to a full system of MUBs.
We investigate strongly regular graphs for which Hoffman's ratio bound and Cvetcović's inertia bound are equal. This means that $ve^- = m^-(e^- - k)$, where $v$ is the number of vertices, $k$ is the regularity, $e^-$ is the smallest eigenvalue, and $m^-$ is the multiplicity of $e^-$. We show that Delsarte cocliques do not exist for all Taylor's $2$-graphs and for point graphs of generalized quadrangles of order $(q,q^2-q)$ for infinitely many $q$. For cases where equality may hold, we show that for nearly all parameter sets, there are at most two Delsarte cocliques.
The $k$-th $p$-power of a graph $G$ is the graph on the vertex set $V(G)^k$, where two $k$-tuples are adjacent iff the number of their coordinates which are adjacent in $G$ is not congruent to 0 modulo $p$. The clique number of powers of $G$ is poly-logarithmic in the number of vertices, thus graphs with small independence numbers in their $p$-powers do not contain large homogenous subsets. We provide algebraic upper bounds for the asymptotic behavior of independence numbers of such powers, settling a conjecture of Alon and Lubetzky up to a factor of 2. For precise bounds on some graphs, we ap…
The line packing problem is concerned with the optimal packing of points in real or complex projective space so that the minimum distance between points is maximized. Until recently, all bounds on optimal line packings were known to be derivable from Delsarte's linear program. Last year, Bukh and Cox introduced a new bound for the line packing problem using completely different techniques. In this paper, we use ideas from the Bukh--Cox proof to find a new proof of the Welch bound, and then we use ideas from Delsarte's linear program to find a new proof of the Bukh--Cox bound. Hopefully, these …
We give a new bound on the parameter $λ$ (number of common neighbors of a pair of adjacent vertices) in a distance-regular graph $G$, improving and generalizing bounds for strongly regular graphs by Spielman (1996) and Pyber (2014). The new bound is one of the ingredients of recent progress on the complexity of testing isomorphism of strongly regular graphs (Babai, Chen, Sun, Teng, Wilmes 2013). The proof is based on a clique geometry found by Metsch (1991) under certain constraints on the parameters. We also give a simplified proof of the following asymptotic consequence of Metsch's result: i…
We derive bounds on the size of an independent set based on eigenvalues. This generalizes a result due to Delsarte and Hoffman. We use this to obtain new bounds on the independence number of the Erdős-Rényi graphs. We investigate further properties of our bounds, and show how our results on the Erdős-Rényi graphs can be extended to other polarity graphs.
We derive a new estimate of the size of finite sets of points in metric spaces with few distances. The following applications are considered: (1) we improve the Ray-Chaudhuri--Wilson bound of the size of uniform intersecting families of subsets; (2) we refine the bound of Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel on the maximum size of spherical sets with few distances; (3) we prove a new bound on codes with few distances in the Hamming space, improving an earlier result of Delsarte. We also find the size of maximal binary codes and maximal constant-weight codes of small length with 2 and 3 distances.
We determine new upper bounds for the clique numbers of strongly regular graphs in terms of their parameters. These bounds improve on the Delsarte bound for infinitely many feasible parameter tuples for strongly regular graphs, including infinitely many parameter tuples that correspond to Paley graphs.
I. J. Schoenberg proved that a function is positive definite in the unit sphere if and only if this function is a nonnegative linear combination of Gegenbauer polynomials. This fact play a crucial role in Delsarte's method for finding bounds for the density of sphere packings on spheres and Euclidean spaces. One of the most excited applications of Delsarte's method is a solution of the kissing number problem in dimensions 8 and 24. However, 8 and 24 are the only dimensions in which this method gives a precise result. For other dimensions (for instance, three and four) the upper bounds exceed t…
We show various upper bounds for the order of a digraph (or a mixed graph) whose Hermitian adjacency matrix has an eigenspace of prescribed codimension. In particular, this generalizes the so-called absolute bound for (simple) graphs first shown by Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel (1977) and extended by Bell and Rowlinson (2003). In doing so, we also adapt the Blokhuis' theory (1983) of harmonic analysis in real hyperbolic spaces to that in complex hyperbolic spaces.
A longstanding open problem in coding theory is to determine the best (asymptotic) rate $R_2(δ)$ of binary codes with minimum constant (relative) distance $δ$. An existential lower bound was given by Gilbert and Varshamov in the 1950s. On the impossibility side, in the 1970s McEliece, Rodemich, Rumsey and Welch (MRRW) proved an upper bound by analyzing Delsarte's linear programs. To date these results remain the best known lower and upper bounds on $R_2(δ)$ with no improvement even for the important class of linear codes. Asymptotically, these bounds differ by an exponential factor in the bloc…
Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel (1977) used the linear programming method in order to find bounds for the size of spherical codes endowed with prescribed inner products between distinct points in the code. In this paper, we develop the linear programming method to obtain bounds for the number of vertices of connected regular graphs endowed with given distinct eigenvalues. This method is proved by some "dual" technique of the spherical case, motivated from the theory of association scheme. As an application of this bound, we prove that a connected $k$-regular graph satisfying $g>2d-1$ has the mi…
We consider the orthogonality graph Omega(n) with 2^n vertices corresponding to the 0-1 n-vectors, two vertices adjacent if and only if the Hamming distance between them is n/2. We show that the stability number of Omega(16) is alpha(Omega(16))= 2304, thus proving a conjecture by Galliard. The main tool we employ is a recent semidefinite programming relaxation for minimal distance binary codes due to Schrijver. As well, we give a general condition for Delsarte bound on the (co)cliques in graphs of relations of association schemes to coincide with the ratio bound, and use it to show that for Om…
A $t$-walk-regular graph is a graph for which the number of walks of given length between two vertices depends only on the distance between these two vertices, as long as this distance is at most $t$. Such graphs generalize distance-regular graphs and $t$-arc-transitive graphs. In this paper, we will focus on 1- and in particular 2-walk-regular graphs, and study analogues of certain results that are important for distance regular graphs. We will generalize Delsarte's clique bound to 1-walk-regular graphs, Godsil's multiplicity bound and Terwilliger's analysis of the local structure to 2-walk-r…
Polynomial, or Delsarte's, method in coding theory accounts for a variety of structural results on, and bounds on the size of, extremal configurations (codes and designs) in various metric spaces. In recent works of the authors the applicability of the method was extended to cover a wider range of problems in coding and information theory. In this paper we present a general framework for the method which includes previous results as particular cases. We explain how this generalization leads to new asymptotic bounds on the performance of codes in binary-input memoryless channels and the Gaussia…
Sharir and Welzl [1] derived a bound on crossing-free matchings primarily based on solving a recurrence based on the size of the matchings. We show that the recurrence given in Lemma 2.3 in Sharir and Welzl can be improve to $(2n-6s)\textbf{Ma}_{m}(P)\leq\frac{68}{3}(s+2)\textbf{Ma}_{m-1}(P)$ and $(3n-7s)\textbf{Ma}_{m}(P)\leq44.5(s+2)\textbf{Ma}_{m-1}(P)$, thereby improving the upper bound for crossing-free matchings.
In many practical applications the underlying graph must be as equitable colored as possible. A coloring is called equitable if the number of vertices colored with each color differs by at most one, and the least number of colors for which a graph has such a coloring is called its equitable chromatic number. We introduce a new integer linear programming approach for studying the equitable coloring number of a graph and show how to use it for improving lower bounds for this number. The two stage method is based on finding or upper bounding the maximum cardinality of an equitable color class in …
We consider following geometric Ramsey problem: find the least dimension $n$ such that for any 2-coloring of edges of complete graph on the points $\{\pm 1\}^n$ there exists 4-vertex coplanar monochromatic clique. Problem was first analyzed by Graham and Rothschild and they gave an upper bound: $n\le F(F(F(F(F(F(F(12)))))))$, where $F(m) = 2\uparrow^m3$. In 2014 Lavrov, Lee and Mackey greatly improved this result by giving upper bound $n< 2\uparrow\uparrow\uparrow 6 < F(5)$. In this paper we revisit their estimates and reduce upper bound to $n< 2\uparrow\uparrow\uparrow 5$
The capacity of a graph is defined as the rate of exponential grow of independent sets in the strong powers of the graph. In strong power, an edge connects two sequences if at each position letters are equal or adjacent. We consider a variation of the problem where edges in the power graphs are removed among sequences which differ in more than a fraction $δ$ of coordinates. For odd cycles, we derive an upper bound on the corresponding rate which combines Lovász' bound on the capacity with Delsarte's linear programming bounds on the minimum distance of codes in Hamming spaces. For the pentagon,…
The notion of duality is a key element in understanding the interplay between the stability and chromatic numbers of a graph. This notion is a central aspect in the celebrated theory of perfect graphs, and is further and deeply developed in the context of the Lovász theta function and its equivalent characterizations and variants. The main achievement of this paper is the introduction of a new family of norms, providing upper bounds for the stability number, that are obtained from duality from the norms motivated by Hoffman's lower bound for the chromatic number and which achieve the (compleme…
A graph is said to be diameter-$k$-critical if its diameter is $k$ and removal of any of its edges increases its diameter. A beautiful conjecture by Murty and Simon, says that every diameter-2-critical graph of order $n$ has at most $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor$ edges and equality holds only for $K_{\lceil n/2 \rceil,\lfloor n/2 \rfloor }$. Haynes et al. proved that the conjecture is true for $Δ\geq 0.7n$. They also proved that for $n>2000$, if $Δ\geq 0.6789n$ then the conjecture is true. We will improve this bound by showing that the conjecture is true for every $n$ if $Δ\geq\ 0.676n$.
In this paper we prove some lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of sets of Furstenberg type. Moreover, we extend these results to sets of generalized Furstenberg type, associated to doubling dimension functions. With some additional growth conditions on the dimension function, we obtain a lower bound on the dimension of "zero dimensional" Furstenberg sets.
Consider a linear program of the form $\max\;c^{\top}x:Ax\leq b$, where $A$ is an $m\times n$ integral matrix. In 1986 Cook, Gerards, Schrijver, and Tardos proved that, given an optimal solution $x^{*}$, if an optimal integral solution $z^{*}$ exists, then it may be chosen such that $\left\Vert x^{*}-z^{*}\right\Vert _{\infty}<nΔ$, where $Δ$ is the largest magnitude of any subdeterminant of $A$. Since then an open question has been to improve this bound, assuming that $b$ is integral valued too. In this manuscript we show that $nΔ$ can be replaced with $\frac{n}{2}\cdotΔ$ whenever $n\geq2$. We…
Matrix perturbation inequalities, such as Weyl's theorem (concerning the singular values) and the Davis-Kahan theorem (concerning the singular vectors), play essential roles in quantitative science; in particular, these bounds have found application in data analysis as well as related areas of engineering and computer science. In many situations, the perturbation is assumed to be random, and the original matrix has certain structural properties (such as having low rank). We show that, in this scenario, classical perturbation results, such as Weyl and Davis-Kahan, can be improved significantly.…
