We introduce a general abstract notion of fine compactified Jacobian for nodal curves of arbitrary genus.
We focus on genus 1 and prove combinatorial classification results for fine compactified Jacobians in the case of a single nodal curve and in the case of the universal family over the moduli space of stable pointed curves. We show that if the fine compactified Jacobian of a nodal curve of genus 1 can be extended to a smoothing of the curve, then it can be described as the moduli space of stable sheaves with respect to some polarisation. In the universal case we construct new examples of genus 1 fine compactified universal Jacobians. Then we give a formula for the Hodge and Betti numbers of each genus 1 fine compactified universal Jacobian and prove that their even cohomology is algebraic.
We study Esteves's fine compactified Jacobians for nodal curves. We give a proof of the fact that, for a one-parameter regular local smoothing of a nodal curve $X$, the relative smooth locus of a relative fine compactified Jacobian is isomorphic to the Néron model of the Jacobian of the general fiber, and thus it provides a modular compactification of it. We show that each fine compactified Jacobian of $X$ admits a stratification in terms of certain fine compactified Jacobians of partial normalizations of $X$ and, moreover, that it can be realized as a quotient of the smooth locus of a suitabl…
To every singular reduced projective curve X one can associate many fine compactified Jacobians, depending on the choice of a polarization on X, each of which yields a modular compactification of a disjoint union of the generalized Jacobian of X. We investigate the geometric properties of fine compactified Jacobians focusing on curves having locally planar singularities. We give examples of nodal curves admitting non isomorphic (and even non homeomorphic over the field of complex numbers) fine compactified Jacobians. We study universal fine compactified Jacobians, which are relative fine compa…
We characterize stable curves $X$ whose compactified degree-$d$ Jacobian is of Néron type. This means the following: for any one-parameter regular smoothing of $X$, the special fiber of the Néron model of the Jacobian of the generic fiber is isomorphic to a dense open subset of the degree-$d$ compactified Jacobian. It is well known that compactified Jacobians of Néron type have the best modular properties, and that they are endowed with a mapping property useful for applications.
We prove by explicit example that the compactified jacobian can be nonreduced. The example is a rational space curve of arithmetic genus 4. This answers a question posed by Cyril D'Souza in 1979.
Let C be an integral projective curve with surficial singularities. We prove that topologically trivial line bundles on the compactified Jacobian of C are in one-to-one correspondence with line bundles on C (the autoduality conjecture), and compute the cohomology of the line bundles. We also show that the natural Fourier-Mukai functor between the derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on the Jacobian and on the compactified Jacobian is fully faithful.
This paper studies the local geometry of compactified Jacobians constructed by Caporaso, Oda-Seshadri, Pandharipande, and Simpson. The main result is a presentation of the completed local ring of the compactified Jacobian of a nodal curve as an explicit ring of invariants described in terms of the dual graph of the curve. The authors have investigated the geometric and combinatorial properties of these rings in previous work, and consequences for compactified Jacobians are presented in this paper. Similar results are given for the local structure of the universal compactified Jacobian over the…
We study the theta divisor of the compactified jacobian of a nodal, possibly reducible, curve. We compute its irreducible components and give it a geometric interpretation consistent with the classical Brill-Noether theory of smooth curves. Some applications on hyperelliptic stable curves are appended.
To every reduced (projective) curve X with planar singularities one can associate many fine compactified Jacobians, depending on the choice of a polarization on X, which are birational (possibly non-isomorphic) Calabi-Yau projective varieties with locally complete intersection singularities. We define a Poincare' sheaf on the product of any two (possibly equal) fine compactified Jacobians of X and show that the integral transform with kernel the Poincare' sheaf is an equivalence of their derived categories. In particular, any two fine compactified Jacobians are derived equivalent. When applied…
Let C be an integral projective curve in any characteristic. Given an invertible sheaf L on C of degree 1, form the associated Abel map A_L : C -> P, which maps C into its compactified Jacobian scheme P, and form its pullback map A_L^* : Pic^0_P -> J, which carries the connected component of 0 in the Picard scheme back to the Jacobian. If C has, at worst, double points, then A_L^* is known to be an isomorphism. We prove that A_L^* always extends to a map between the natural compactifications, Pic^-_P -> P, and that the extended map is an isomorphism if C has, at worst, ordinary nodes and cusps…
Let C be an integral projective curve with planar singularities. Consider its Jacobian J and the compactified Jacobian J'. We construct a flat family P of Cohen-Macaulay sheaves on J' parametrized by J'; over J, the family P is the Poincare line bundle. We prove that the Fourier-Mukai transform given by P is an auto-equivalence of the derived category of J'.
We determine explicitly the Picard groups of the universal Jacobian stack and of its compactification over the stack of stable curves. Along the way, we prove some results concerning the gerbe structure of the universal Jacobian stack over its rigidification by the natural action of the multiplicative group and relate this with the existence of generalized Poincaré line bundles. We also compare our results with Kouvidakis-Fontanari computations of the divisor class group of the universal (compactified) Jacobian scheme.
In this paper we establish that the singularities of the universal compactified Jacobian are canonical if the genus is at least four. As a corollary we determine the Kodaira dimension and the Iitaka fibration of the universal compactified Jacobian for every degree and genus. We also determine the birational automorphism group for every degree if the genus is at least twelve. This extends work of G. Farkas and A. Verra, as well as that of G. Bini, C. Fontanari and the third author.
Using the compactified universal jacobian over the moduli space of stable marked curves, we give an expression in terms of natural classes of the zero section of the compactified universal jacobian the (rational) Chow ring. After extending variants of the Abel-Jacobi map to a locus containing curves of treelike type we give a formula for the pullback of the said zero section along these extensions. The same approach is also applied to recover known formulas for the pullback of theta divisors to the moduli space of marked stable curves.
To every singular reduced projective curve X one can associate, following E. Esteves, many fine compactified Jacobians, depending on the choice of a polarization on X, each of which yields a modular compactification of a disjoint union of the generalized Jacobian of X. We prove that, for a reduced curve with locally planar singularities, the integral (or Fourier-Mukai) transform with kernel the Poincare' sheaf from the derived category of the generalized Jacobian of X to the derived category of any fine compactified Jacobian of X is fully faithful, generalizing a previous result of D. Arinkin …
We use orientations on stable graphs to express the combinatorial structure of the compactified universal Jacobians in degrees g-1 and g over the moduli space of stable curves, \Mgb, and construct for them graded stratifications compatible with the one of \Mgb. In particular, for a stable curve we exhibit graded stratifications of the compactified Jacobians in terms of totally cyclic, respectively rooted, orientations on subgraphs of its dual graph.
Given a finite, flat morphism between embeddable noetherian schemes of pure dimension 1, we define the notion of direct and inverse image for generalized divisors and generalized line bundles. In the case when we deal with (possibly reducible, non-reduced) projective curves over a field and the codomain curve is smooth, we introduce the compactified Jacobians parametrizing torsion-free rank-1 sheaves and we study the Norm and inverse image maps between compactified Jacobians. Finally, we introduce and study the Prym stack defined as the kernel of the Norm map.
We provide an explicit presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring of the compactified Jacobian $J_{q/p}$ of the rational curve $C_{q/p}$ with planar equation $x^{q}=y^{p}$ for $(p,q)=1$. We also prove analogous results for the closely related affine Springer fiber $Sp_{q/p}$ in the affine flag variety of $SL_{p}$. We show that the perverse filtration on the cohomology of $J_{q/p}$ is multiplicative, and the associated graded ring under the perverse filtration is a degeneration of the ring of functions on a moduli space of maps $\mathbb{P}^{1}\to C_{q/p}$. We also propose several conjectur…
In this paper we describe compactified universal Jacobians, i.e. compactifications of the moduli space of line bundles on smooth curves obtained as moduli spaces of rank 1 torsion-free sheaves on stable curves, using an approach due to Oda-Seshadri. We focus on the combinatorics of the stability conditions used to define compactified universal Jacobians. We explicitly describe an affine space, the stability space, with a decomposition into polytopes such that each polytope corresponds to a proper Deligne-Mumford stack that compactifies the moduli space of line bundles. We apply this descriptio…
In this paper we study the irreducible components of the compactified Jacobian of a ribbon $X$ of arithmetic genus $g$ over a smooth curve $X_{\mathrm{red}}$ of genus $\bar{g}$. We prove that when $g\geq 4\bar{g}-2$ the moduli space of rank $2$ semistable vector bundles over $X_{\mathrm{red}}$ is not an irreducible component and we determine the irreducible components in which it is contained. This answers a question of D. Chen and J.L. Kass in [CK] and completes their results.
We show that the Euler number of the compactified Jacobian of a rational curve $C$ with locally planar singularities is equal to the multiplicity of the $δ$-constant stratum in the base of a semi-universal deformation of $C$. In particular, the multiplicity assigned by Yau, Zaslow and Beauville to a rational curve on a K3 surface $S$ coincides with the multiplicity of the normalisation map in the moduli space of stable maps to $S$.
A curve, that is, a connected, reduced, projective scheme of dimension 1 over an algebraically closed field, admits two types of compactifications of its (generalized) Jacobian: the moduli schemes of P-quasistable torsion-free, rank-1 sheaves and Seshadri's moduli schemes of S-equivalence classes of semistable torsion-free, rank-1 sheaves. Both are constructed with respect to a choice of polarization. The former are fine moduli spaces which were shown to be complete; here we show that they are actually projective. The latter are just coarse moduli spaces. Here we give a sufficient condition fo…
J. Piontkowski described the homology of the Jacobi factor of a plane curve singularity with one Puiseux pair. We discuss the combinatorial structure of his answer, in particular, relate it to the bigraded deformation of Catalan numbers introduced by A. Garsia and M. Haiman.
Given a family of nodal curves, a semistable modification of it is another family made up of curves obtained by inserting chains of rational curves of any given length at certain nodes of certain curves of the original family. We give comparison theorems between torsion-free, rank-1 sheaves in the former family and invertible sheaves in the latter. We apply them to show that there are functorial isomorphisms between the compactifications of relative Jacobians of families of nodal curves constructed through Caporaso's approach and those constructed through Pandharipande's approach.
This paper studies the components of the moduli space of rank 1, torsion-free sheaves, or compactified Jacobian, of a non-Gorenstein curve. We exhibit a generically reduced component of dimension equal to the arithmetic genus and prove that this is the only non-smoothable component when the curve has a unique singularity that is of finite representation type. Analogous results are proven for the Hilbert scheme of points and the Quot scheme parameterizing quotients of the dualizing sheaf.
We study certain moduli spaces of sheaves on Enriques surfaces thereby obtaining, in every odd dimension, new examples of Calabi-Yau manifolds. We describe the geometry (canonical bundle, fundamental group, second Betti number and certain Hodge numbers) of these moduli spaces showing, in partial analogy to the well-known case of sheaves on K3 or Abelian surfaces, how the geometry of the surface reflects that of the moduli space itself.
Let J be the jacobian of a reduced projective curve C with nodes only. 1) We give a simple and natural definition for its many compactifications and show the connection with various other definitions appearing in the literature. 2) Among all compactifications we choose one canonical, and define a theta divisor on it. 3) We give two very explicit and simple descriptions of a stratification of this canonical compactification into homogeneous spaces over J.
This thesis, done under the supervision of Filippo Viviani, is devoted to the study of the spectral correspondence for $G$-Higgs pairs, in the case of $G=SL(r,\mathbb{C})$, $PGL(r, \mathbb{C})$, $Sp(2r,\mathbb{C})$, $GSp(2r,\mathbb{C})$, $PSp(2r,\mathbb{C})$, over any fiber. In the first chapter we introduce the compactified Jacobian stack parametrizing torsion-free rank-1 sheaves over a (possibly reducible, non reduced) projective curve and we describe the spectral correspondence for Higgs pairs in terms of the compactified Jacobian. In the second chapter, we study the notion of direct and in…
We prove the following autoduality theorem for an integral projective curve C in any characteristic. Given an invertible sheaf L of degree 1, form the corresponding Abel map A_L: C->J, which maps C into its compactified Jacobian, and form its pullback map A_L^*: Pic^0_J to J, which carries the connected component of 0 in the Picard scheme back to the Jacobian. If C has, at worst, points of multiplicity 2, then A_L^* is an isomorphism, and forming it commutes with specializing C. Much of our work is valid, more generally, for a family of curves with, at worst, points of embedding dimension 2. I…
The compactified Jacobian of any projective curve $X$ is defined as the Simpson moduli space of torsion free rank one degree $d$ sheaves that are semistable with respect to a fixed polarization $H$ on $X$. In this paper we give explicitly the structure of this compactified Simpson Jacobian in the case where $X$ is a generalized tree-like curve, i.e., a projective, reduced and connected curve such that the intersection points of its irreducible components are disconnecting ordinary double points. We prove that it is isomorphic to the product of the compactified Jacobians of a certain degree $d_…
We continue the study of the rational-slope generalized $q,t$-Catalan numbers $c_{m,n}(q,t)$. We describe generalizations of the bijective constructions of J. Haglund and N. Loehr and use them to prove a weak symmetry property $c_{m,n}(q,1)=c_{m,n}(1,q)$ for $m=kn\pm 1$. We give a bijective proof of the full symmetry $c_{m,n}(q,t)=c_{m,n}(t,q)$ for $\min(m,n)\le 3$. As a corollary of these combinatorial constructions, we give a simple formula for the Poincaré polynomials of compactified Jacobians of plane curve singularities $x^{kn\pm 1}=y^n$. We also give a geometric interpretation of a relat…
The Jacobian $J$ of a complete, smooth, connected curve $X$ admits a canonical divisor $Θ$, called the Theta divisor. It is well-known that $Θ$ is ample and, in fact, $3Θ$ is very ample. For a general complete, integral curve $X$, D'Souza constructed a compactification $\bar J$ of the Jacobian $J$ by considering torsion-free, rank 1 sheaves on $X$. Soucaris and the author considered independently the analogous Theta divisor $Θ$ on $\bar J$, and showed that $Θ$ is ample. In this article, we show that $nΘ$ is very ample for $n$ greater or equal to a specified lower bound. If $X$ has at most ordi…
We present a treatment of the algebraic description of the Jacobian of a generic genus two plane curve which exploits an SL2(k) equivariance and clarifes the structure of E.V.Flynn's 72 defining quadratic relations. The treatment is also applied to the Kummer variety.
We present a quasi-linear algorithm to compute isogenies between Jacobians of curves of genus 2 and 3 starting from the equation of the curve and a maximal isotropic subgroup of the l-torsion, for l an odd prime number, generalizing the Vélu's formula of genus 1. This work is based from the paper "Computing functions on Jacobians and their quotients" of Jean-Marc Couveignes and Tony Ezome. We improve their genus 2 case algorithm, generalize it for genus 3 hyperelliptic curves and introduce a way to deal with the genus 3 non-hyperelliptic case, using algebraic theta functions.
We prove that the geometric genus p of a curve in a very generic Jacobian of dimension g>3 satisfies either p=g or p>2g-3. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture of Naranjo and Pirola. For low values of g the second inequality can be further improved to p>2g-2.
The aim of this note is to describe the restriction map from the moduli space of stable rank 2 bundle with small $c_2$ on a jacobian $X$ of dimension 2, to the moduli space of stable rank 2 bundles on the corresponding genus 2 curve $C$ embedded in $X$.
We prove that in most cases relevant to cryptography, the Frobenius endomorphism on the Jacobian of a genus two curve is represented by a diagonal matrix with respect to an appropriate basis of the subgroup of l-torsion points. From this fact we get an explicit description of the Weil-pairing on the subgroup of l-torsion points. Finally, the explicit description of the Weil-pairing provides us with an efficient, probabilistic algorithm to find generators of the subgroup of l-torsion points on the Jacobian of a genus two curve.
Given a canonical genus three curve $X=\{F=0\}$, we construct, emulating Mumford discussion for hyperelliptic curves, a set of equations for an affine open subset of the jacobian $JX$. We give explicit algorithms describing the law group in $JX$. Finally we introduce a related construction by means of an imbedding of the open set previously described in a Grassmanian variety.
