We make explicit the exponential bound on the degrees of the polynomials appearing in the Effective Quillen-Suslin Theorem, and apply it jointly with the Hilbert-Burch Theorem to show that the syzygy module of a sequence of m polynomials in n variables defining a complete intersection ideal of grade two is free, and that a basis of it can be computed with bounded degrees. In the known cases, these bounds improve previous results.
Motivated by the notion of geometrically linked ideals, we show that over a Gorenstein local ring $R$, if a Cohen-Macaulay $R$-module $M$ of grade $g$ is linked to an $R$-module $N$ by a Gorenstein ideal $c$, such that $Ass_R(M)\cap Ass_R(N)=\emptyset$, then $M\otimes_RN$ is isomorphic to direct sum of copies of $R/a$, where $a$ is a Gorenstein ideal of $R$ of grade $g+1$. We give a criterion for the depth of a local ring $(R,m,k)$ in terms of the homological dimensions of the modules linked to the syzygies of the residue field $k$. As a result we characterize a local ring $(R,m,k)$ in terms o…
Consider an ideal $I\subset K[x_1,..., x_n]$, with $K$ an arbitrary field, generated by monomials of degree two. Assuming that $I$ does not have a linear resolution, we determine the step $s$ of the minimal graded free resolution of $I$ where nonlinear syzygies first appear, we show that at this step of the resolution nonlinear syzygies are concentrated in degree $s+3$, and we compute the corresponding graded Betti number $β_{s,s+3}$. The multidegrees of these nonlinear syzygies are also determined and the corresponding multigraded Betti numbers are shown to be all equal to 1.
We study families of cellular resolutions by looking at them as a category and applying tools from representation stability. We obtain sufficient conditions on the structure of the family to have a noetherian representation category and apply this to concrete examples of families. In the study of syzygies we make use of defining the syzygy module as a representation and find conditions for the finite generation of this representation. We then show that many families of cellular resolutions coming from powers of ideals satisfy these conditions and have finitely generated syzygies, including the…
A graded K-algebra R has property N_p if it is generated in degree 1, has relations in degree 2 and the syzygies of order less or equal to p on the relations are linear. The Green-Lazarsfeld index of R is the largest p such that it satisfies the property N_p. Our main results assert that (under a mild assumption on the base field K) the c-th Veronese subring of a polynomial ring has Green-Lazarsfeld index greater or equal to c+1. The same conclusion also holds for an arbitrary standard graded algebra, provided c is sufficiently large.
Let $X$ be a reduced closed subscheme in $\mathbb P^n$. As a slight generalization of property $\textbf{N}_p$ due to Green-Lazarsfeld, we can say that $X$ satisfies property $\textbf{N}_{2,p}$ scheme-theoretically if there is an ideal $I$ generating the ideal sheaf $\mathcal I_{X/¶^n}$ such that $I$ is generated by quadrics and there are only linear syzygies up to $p$-th step (cf. \cite{EGHP1}, \cite{EGHP2}, \cite{V}). Recently, many algebraic and geometric results have been proved for projective varieties satisfying property $\textbf{N}_{2,p}$(cf. \cite{CKP}, \cite{EGHP1}, \cite{EGHP2} \cite …
For an ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m)$ with residue class field K = R/m or a standard graded K-algebra R we show that for k >> 0 --> the Artin--Rees number of the syzygy modules of I^k as submodules of the free modules from a free resolution is constant, and thereby present the Artin-Rees number as a proper replacement of regularity in the local situation, --> the ring R/I^k is Golod, its Poincer{é}-Betti series is rational and the Betti numbers of the free resolution of K over R/I^k are polynomials in k of a specific degree. The first result is an extension of work of Kodiyalam and Cut…
We show that the secant variety of a linearly normal smooth curve of degree at least 2g+3 is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, and we use this information to study the graded Betti numbers of the secant variety.
In the present paper, we consider upper bounds of higher linear syzygies i.e. graded Betti numbers in the first linear strand of the minimal free resolutions of projective varieties in arbitrary characteristic. For this purpose, we first remind `Partial Elimination Ideals (PEIs)' theory and introduce a new framework in which one can study the syzygies of embedded projective schemes well using PEIs theory and the reduction method via inner projections. Next we establish fundamental inequalities which govern the relations between the graded Betti numbers in the first linear strand of an algebrai…
We study the syzygies of secant ideals of Veronese subrings of a fixed commutative graded algebra over a field of characteristic 0. One corollary is that the degrees of the minimal generators of the ith syzygy module of the coordinate ring of the rth secant variety of any Veronese embedding of a projective scheme X can be bounded by a constant that only depends on i, r, and X, and not on the choice of the Veronese embedding.
We give sharp lower bounds for the degree of the syzygies involving the partial derivatives of a homogeneous polynomial defining a nodal hypersurface. The result gives information on the position of the singularities of a nodal hypersurface expressed in terms of defects or superabundances. The case of Chebyshev hypersurfaces is considered as a test for this result and leads to a potentially infinite family of nodal hypersurfaces having nontrivial Alexander polynomials.
Among other results, we prove that if $I$ is a monomial ideal of $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, where $K$ is a field, and $a\geq b-1\geq0$ are integers such that $a+b\leq\mathrm{proj~dim}(S/I)$, then $$t_{a+b}\leq t_a+t_1+t_2+\cdots+t_b-\frac{b(b-1)}{2},$$ where $t_1,t_2,\dots$ are the maximal shifts in the minimal graded free $S$-resolution of $S/I$.
When $R$ is a Noetherian ring and we have a family of ideals in which every ideal contains at least one nonzero divisor, then it is already known that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of these ideals is equal to a saturated ideal. In such a case to get the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra we only need to saturate the first syzygies of direct sum of this family of ideals. However, this fact is not true, when at least one of these ideals does not contain any nonzero divisor. In this paper we show that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of a family of ideals of a pol…
We analyze the vanishing and non-vanishing behavior of the graded Betti numbers for Segre embeddings of products of projective spaces. We give lower bounds for when each of the rows of the Betti table becomes non-zero, and prove that our bounds are tight for Segre embeddings of products of P^1. This generalizes results of Rubei concerning the Green-Lazarsfeld property N_p for Segre embeddings. Our methods combine the Kempf-Weyman geometric technique for computing syzygies, the Ein-Erman-Lazarsfeld approach to proving non-vanishing of Betti numbers, and the theory of algebras with straightening…
The problem of finding generators of the $GL$-ideal of the relations between the generators of the algebra of invariants of the dihedral group acting on $m$-tuples of vectors from its defining $2$-dimensional representation is studied. It is shown that this $GL$-ideal is generated by relations depending on no more than $3$ vector variables. A minimal $GL$-ideal generating system is found for the case when $m=2$, and for the case of the dihedral group of order $8$ and arbitrary $m$.
One proves a far-reaching upper bound for the degree of a generically finite rational map between projective varieties over a base field of arbitrary characteristic. The bound is expressed as a product of certain degrees that appear naturally by considering the Rees algebra (blowup) of the base ideal defining the map. Several special cases are obtained as consequences, some of which cover and extend previous results in the literature.
In the 1980's, work of Green and Lazarsfeld helped to uncover the beautiful interplay between the geometry of the embedding of a curve and the syzygies of its defining equations. Similar results hold for the first secant variety of a curve, and there is a natural conjectural picture extending to higher secant varieties as well. We present an introduction to the algebra and geometry used in previous work of the authors to study syzygies of secant varieties of curves with an emphasis on examples of explicit computations and elementary cases that illustrate the geometric principles at work.
The Betti numbers of a graded module over the polynomial ring form a table of numerical invariants that refines the Hilbert polynomial. A sequence of papers sparked by conjectures of Boij and Söderberg have led to the characterization of the possible Betti tables up to rational multiples---that is, to the rational cone generated by the Betti tables. We will summarize this work by describing the cone and the closely related cone of cohomology tables of vector bundles on projective space, and we will give new, simpler proofs of some of the main results. We also explain some of the applications o…
Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan have conjectured that for any homogeneous $k$-algebra, the multiplicity is bounded above by a function of the maximal degrees of the syzygies and below by a function of the minimal degrees of the syzygies. The goal of this paper is to establish the multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan about the multiplicity of graded Cohen-Macaulay algebras over a field $k$ for $k$-algebras $k[x_1, ..., x_n]/I$ being $I$ a determinantal ideal of arbitrary codimension.
For an algebraic set $X$ (union of varieties) embedded in projective space, we say that $X$ satisfies property $\textbf{N}_{d,p}$, $(d\ge 2)$ if the $i$-th syzygies of the homogeneous coordinate ring are generated by elements of degree $< d+i$ for $0\le i\le p$ (see \cite{EGHP2} for details). Much attention has been paid to linear syzygies of quadratic schemes $(d=2)$ and their geometric interpretations (cf. \cite{AK},\cite{EGHP1},\cite{HK},\cite{GL2},\cite{KP}). However, not very much is actually known about the case satisfying property $\textbf{N}_{3,p}$. In this paper, we give a sharp upper…
Let $R=k[x,y,z]$ be a standard graded $3$-variable polynomial ring, where $k$ denotes any field. We study grade $3$ homogeneous ideals $I \subseteq R$ defining compressed rings with socle $k(-s)^{\ell} \oplus k(-2s+1)$, where $s \geq3$ and $\ell \geq 1$ are integers. The case for $\ell =1$ was studied in a previous paper by the author; a generically minimal resolution was constructed for all such ideals. More recently, this resolution is generalized in the guise of (iterated) trimming complexes. In this paper, we show that all ideals of the above form are resolved by an iterated trimming compl…
The main goal of this paper is to size up the minimal graded free resolution of a homogeneous ideal in terms of its generating degrees. By and large, this is too ambitious an objective. As understood, sizing up means looking closely at the two available parameters: the shifts and the Betti numbers. Since, in general, bounds for the shifts can behave quite steeply, we filter the difficulty by the subadditivity of the syzygies. The method we applied is hopefully new and sheds additional light on the structure of the minimal free resolution. We use the Boij-Söderberg techniques for the Betti numb…
Let $R=k[x,y,z]$ be a standard graded $3$-variable polynomial ring, where $k$ denotes any field. We study grade $3$ homogeneous ideals $I \subseteq R$ defining compressed rings with socle $k(-s) \oplus k(-2s+1)$, where $s \geq3$ is some integer. We prove that all such ideals are obtained by a trimming process introduced by Christensen, Veliche, and Weyman. We also construct a general resolution for all such ideals which is minimal in sufficiently generic cases. Using this resolution, we can give bounds on the minimal number of generators $μ(I)$ of $I$ depending only on $s$; moreover, we show t…
Let X be a smooth projective variety with torsion-free Picard group. We introduce complexes of vector spaces whose homology determines the structure of the minimal free resolution of the Cox ring of X over the polynomial ring and show how the homology of these complexes can be studied by purely geometric methods. As an application of these techniques we give a simple new proof of a characterization of the Cox rings of Del Pezzo surfaces (of degree >1) conjectured by Batyrev and Popov.
We find the defining equations of Rees rings of linearly presented height three Gorenstein ideals. To prove our main theorem we use local cohomology techniques to bound the maximum generator degree of the torsion submodule of symmetric powers in order to conclude that the defining equations of the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring have the same image in the symmetric algebra. We show that this image is the unmixed part of the ideal generated by the maximal minors of a matrix of linear forms which is annihilated by a vector of indeterminates, and otherwise has maximal possible grade. An i…
Given a standard graded polynomial ring over a commutative Noetherian ring $A$, we prove that the cohomological dimension and the height of the ideals defining any of its Veronese subrings are equal. This result is due to Ogus when $A$ is a field of characteristic zero, and follows from a result of Peskine and Szpiro when $A$ is a field of positive characteristic; our result applies, for example, when $A$ is the ring of integers.
Given $Σ\subset R:=\mathbb K[x_1,\ldots,x_k]$, where $\mathbb K$ is a field of characteristic 0, any finite collection of linear forms, some possibly proportional, and any $1\leq a\leq |Σ|$, we prove that $I_a(Σ)$, the ideal generated by all $a$-fold products of $Σ$, has linear graded free resolution. This allows us to determine a generating set for the defining ideal of the Orlik-Terao algebra of the second order of a line arrangement in $\mathbb P_{\mathbb{K}}^2$, and to conclude that for the case $k=3$, and $Σ$ defining such a line arrangement, the ideal $I_{|Σ|-2}(Σ)$ is of fiber type. We …
We study computational aspects of the tight closure of a homogeneous primary ideal in a two-dimensional normal standard-graded domain. We show how to use slope criteria for the sheaf of syzygies for generators of the ideal to compute the tight closure. Our method gives in particular an algorithm to compute the tight closure of three elements under the condition that we are able to compute the Harder-Narasimhan filtration. We apply this to the computation of (x^a,y^a,z^a)^* in K[x,y,z]/(F), where F is a homogeneous polynomial.
Let $I\subset \mathbb C[x,y,z]$ be an ideal of height 2 and minimally generated by three homogeneous polynomials of the same degree. If $I$ is a locally complete intersection we give a criterion for $\mathbb C[x,y,z]/I$ to be arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. Since the setup above is most commonly used when $I=J_F$ is the Jacobian ideal of the defining polynomial of a "quasihomogeneous" reduced curve $Y=V(F)$ in $\mathbb P^2$, our main result becomes a criterion for freeness of such divisors. As an application we give an upper bound for the degree of the reduced Jacobian scheme when $Y$ is a free…
Let $R = k[w, x_1,..., x_n]/I$ be a graded Gorenstein Artin algebra . Then $I = \ann F$ for some $F$ in the divided power algebra $k_{DP}[W, X_1,..., X_n]$. If $RI_2$ is a height one idealgenerated by $n$ quadrics, then $I_2 \subset (w)$ after a possible change of variables. Let $J = I \cap k[x_1,..., x_n]$. Then $μ(I) \le μ(J)+n+1$ and $I$ is said to be generic if $μ(I) = μ(J) + n+1$. In this article we prove necessary conditions, in terms of $F$, for an ideal to be generic. With some extra assumptions on the exponents of terms of $F$, we obtain a characterization for $I = \ann F$ to be gener…
In this paper we find the tight closure of powers of parameter ideals of certain diagonal hypersurface rings. In many cases the associated graded ring with respect to tight closure filtration turns out to be Cohen-Macaulay. This helps us find the tight Hilbert polynomial in these diagonal hypersurfaces. We determine the tight Hilbert polynomial in the following cases: (1) F-pure diagonal hypersurfaces where number of variables is equal to the degree of defining equation, (2) diagonal hypersurface rings where characteristic of the ring is one less than the degree of defining equation and (3) qu…
We prove that the defining ideal of a sufficiently high Veronese subring of a toric algebra admits a quadratic Gröbner basis consisting of binomials. More generally, we prove that the defining ideal of a sufficiently high Veronese subring of a standard graded ring admits a quadratic Gröbner basis. We give a lower bound on $d$ such that the defining ideal of $d$-th Veronese subring admits a quadratic Gröbner basis. Eisenbud--Reeves--Totaro stated the same theorem without a proof with some lower bound on $d$. In many cases, our lower bound is less than Eisenbud--Reeves--Totaro's lower bound.
Let $I$ be the ideal generated by alternating polynomials in two sets of $n$ variables. Haiman proved that the $q,t$-Catalan number is the Hilbert series of the graded vector space $M(=\bigoplus_{d_1,d_2}M_{d_1,d_2})$ spanned by a minimal set of generators for $I$. In this paper we give simple upper bounds on $\text{dim}M_{d_1, d_2}$ in terms of partition numbers, and find all bi-degrees $(d_1,d_2)$ such that $\dim M_{d_1, d_2}$ achieve the upper bounds. For such bi-degrees, we also find explicit bases for $M_{d_1, d_2}$. The main idea is to define and study a nontrivial linear map from $M$ to…
