The Hodge numerical invariants of a variation of Hodge structure over a smooth quas--projective variety are a measure of complexity for the global twisting of the limit mixed Hodge structure when it degenerates. These invariants appear in inequalities which they may have correction terms, called Arakelov inequalities. One may investigate the correction term to make them into equalities, also called Arakelov equalities. We investigate numerical Arakelov type (in)equilities for a family of surfaces fibered by curves. Our method uses Arakelov identities in a weight 1 and also in a weight 2 variations of Hodge structure (cf. \cite{GGK}), in a commutative triangle of fibrations. We have proposed to relate the degrees of the Hodge bundles in the two families. We also compare the Fujita decomposition of Hodge bundles in these fibrations. We examine various identities and relations between Hodge numbers and degrees of the Hodge bundles in different levels.
We give a proof of generalizations of the classical Arakelov inequality valid for the degree $d$ of the relative canoincal bundle of a family of curves of genus $g$ over a complete curve of genus $p$ under the assumption that the monodromy around the singular fibers is unipotent. This relative canonical bundle is the (canonical extension of) the Hodge bundle and the inequality is generalized to the degrees of the Hodge bundles of a complex variation of Hodge structures.
In this paper we study the $\mathbb{C}^*$-fixed points in moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface for a complex semisimple Lie group and its real forms. These fixed points are called Hodge bundles and correspond to complex variations of Hodge structure. We introduce a topological invariant for Hodge bundles that generalizes the Toledo invariant appearing for Hermitian Lie groups. A main result of this paper is a bound on this invariant which generalizes both the Milnor-Wood inequality of the Hermitian case and the Arakelov inequalities of classical variations of Hodge str…
We get a new inequality on the Hodge number $h^{1,1}(S)$ of fibred algebraic complex surfaces $S$, which is a generalization of an inequality of Beauville. Our inequality implies the Arakelov type inequalities due to Arakelov, Faltings, Viehweg and Zuo, respectively.
We give two kinds of generalizations of Arakelov type inequalities for higher dimensional families. These results give higher dimensional generalizations (in both fibers and bases) of the weakly boundedness in Paršin-Arakelov's reformulation of the geometric Shafarevich conjecture. As a consequence, we deduce the following results. Hyperbolicity: We give an alternative proof (using the theory of degeneration of Hodge structure) to the hyperbolicity (in Paršin-Arakelov's reformulation, i.e. Viehweg's hyperbolicity conjecture) of the base of a family with maximal variation whose general fibers a…
We develop a Hodge theoretic invariant for families of projective manifolds that measures the potential failure of an Arakelov-type inequality in higher dimensions, one that naturally generalizes the classical Arakelov inequality over regular quasi-projective curves. We show that for families of manifolds with ample canonical bundle this invariant is uniformly bounded. As a consequence we establish that such families over a base of arbitrary dimension verify the aforementioned Arakelov inequality, answering a question of Viehweg.
Let Y be a non-singular projective manifold with an ample canonical sheaf, and let V be a rational variation of Hodge structures of weight one on Y with Higgs bundle E(1,0) + E(0,1), coming from a family of Abelian varieties. If Y is a curve the Arakelov inequality says that the difference of the slope of E(1,0) and the one of E(0,1) is is smaller than or equal to the degree of the canonical sheaf. We prove a similar inequality in the higher dimensional case. If the latter is an equality, as well as the Bogomolov inequality for E(1,0) or for E(0,1), one hopes that Y is a Shimura variety, and V…
We prove a Second Main Theorem type inequality for any log-smooth projective pair $(X,D)$ such that $X\setminus D$ supports a complex polarized variation of Hodge structures. This can be viewed as a Nevanlinna theoretic analogue of the Arakelov inequalities for variations of Hodge structures due to Deligne, Peters and Jost-Zuo. As an application, we obtain in this context a criterion of hyperbolicity that we use to derive a vast generalization of a well-known hyperbolicity result of Nadel. The first ingredient of our proof is a Second Main Theorem type inequality for any log-smooth projective …
The Hodge numbers of generic elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds over toric base surfaces fill out the "shield" structure previously identified by Kreuzer and Skarke. The connectivity structure of these spaces and bounds on the Hodge numbers are illuminated by considerations from F-theory and the minimal model program. In particular, there is a rigorous bound on the Hodge number h_{21} <= 491 for any elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold. The threefolds with the largest known Hodge numbers are associated with a sequence of blow-ups of toric bases beginning with the Hirzebruch surfac…
We discuss and extend some of the results obtained in "Arakelov inequalities and the uniformization of certain rigid Shimura varieties" (math.AG/0503339), restricting ourselves to the two dimensional case, i.e. to surfaces Y mapping generically finite to the moduli stack of Abelian varieties. In particular we show that Y is a Hilber modular surfaces if and only if the dergee of the Hodge bundle satisfies the Arakelov equality. In the revised version, we corrected some minor mistakes, pointed out by the referee, and we tried to improve the presentation of the text.
This survey article discusses some results on the structure of families f:V-->U of n-dimensional manifolds over quasi-projective curves U, with semistable reduction over a compactification Y of U. We improve the Arakelov inequality for the direct images of powers of the dualizing sheaf. For families of Abelian varieties we recall the characterization of Shimura curves by Arakelov equalities. For families of curves we recall the characterization of Teichmueller curves in terms of the existence of certain sub variation of Hodge structures. We sketch the proof that the moduli scheme of curves of …
We discuss the space of sections and certain bisections on a quadric surfaces bundle $X$ over a smooth curve. The Abel-Jacobi from these spaces to the intermediate Jacobian will be shown to be dominant with rationally connected fibers. As an application, we prove that the integral Hodge conjecture holds for degree four integral Hodge classes of fourfolds fibered by quadric bundles over a smooth curve. This gives an alternative proof of a result of Colliot-Th{é}l{è}ne and Voisin.
We carry out a systematic analysis of Calabi-Yau threefolds that are elliptically fibered with section ("EFS") and have a large Hodge number h^{2, 1}. EFS Calabi-Yau threefolds live in a single connected space, with regions of moduli space associated with different topologies connected through transitions that can be understood in terms of singular Weierstrass models. We determine the complete set of such threefolds that have h^{2, 1} >= 350 by tuning coefficients in Weierstrass models over Hirzebruch surfaces. The resulting set of Hodge numbers includes those of all known Calabi-Yau threefold…
Looking at the finite étale congruence covers $X(p)$ of a complex algebraic variety $X$ equipped with a variation of integral polarized Hodge structures whose period map is quasi-finite, we show that both the minimal gonality among all curves contained in $X(p)$ and the minimal volume among all subvarieties of $X(p)$ tend to infinity with $p$. This applies for example to Shimura varieties, moduli spaces of curves, moduli spaces of abelian varieties, moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau varieties, and can be made effective in many cases. The proof goes roughly as follows. We first prove a generalization…
We study certain spaces of nilpotent orbits in Hodge domains, and treat a number of examples. More precisely, we compute the Mumford-Tate group of the limit mixed Hodge structure of a generic such orbit. The result is used to present these spaces as iteratively fibered algebraic-group orbits in a minimal way. We conclude with two applications to variations of Hodge structure.
This is loosely a continuation of the author's previous paper arXiv:1802.09496. In the first part, given a fibered variety, we pull back the Leray filtration to the Chow group, and use this to give some criteria for the Hodge and Tate conjectures to hold for such varieties. In the second part, we show that the Hodge conjecture holds for a good desingularization of a self fibre product of a non-isotrivial elliptic surface under appropriate conditions. We also show that the Hodge and Tate conjectures hold for natural families of abelian varieties parameterized by certain Shimura curves. This use…
Consider a family f:A --> U of g-dimensional abelian varieties over a quasiprojective manifold U. Suppose that the induced map from U to the moduli scheme of polarized abelian varieties is generically finite and that there is a projective manifold Y, containing U as the complement of a normal crossing divisor S, such that the sheaf of logarithmic one forms is nef and that its determinant is ample with respect to U. We characterize whether $U$ is a Shimura variety by numerical data attached to the variation of Hodge structures, rather than by properties of the map from U to the moduli scheme or…
Given an open subset U of a projective curve Y and a smooth family f:V-->U of curves, with semi-stable reduction over Y, we show that for a sub variation of Hodge structures of rank >2 the Arakelov inequality must be strict. For families of n-folds we prove a similar result under the assumption that the (n,0) component of the Higgs bundle defines fibrewise a birational map.
For a one parameter family of Calabi-Yau threefolds, Green, Griffiths and Kerr have expressed the total singularities in terms of the degrees of Hodge bundles and Euler number of the general fiber. In this paper, we show that the total singularities can be expressed by the sum of asymptotic values of BCOV invariants, studied by Fang, Lu and Yoshikawa. On the other hand, by using Yau's Schwarz lemma, we prove Arakelov type inequalities and Euler number bound for Calabi-Yau family over a compact Riemann surface.
We construct group-theoretical generalizations of the Hasse invariant on strata closures of the stacks $G$-Zip$^μ$. Restricting to zip data of Hodge type, we obtain a group-theoretical Hasse invariant on every Ekedahl-Oort stratum closure of a general Hodge-type Shimura variety. A key tool is the construction of a stack of zip flags $G$-ZipFlag$^μ$, fibered in flag varieties over $G$-Zip$^μ$. It provides a simultaneous generalization of the "classical case" homogeneous complex manifolds studied by Griffiths-Schmid and the "flag space" for Siegel varieties studied by Ekedahl-van der Geer. Four …
We develop a combinatorial approach to the construction of general smooth compact base surfaces that support elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends previous analyses that have relied on toric or semi-toric structure. The resulting algorithm is used to construct all classes of such base surfaces $S$ with $h^{1, 1} (S) < 8$ and all base surfaces over which there is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ with Hodge number $h^{2, 1} (X) \geq 150$. These two sets can be used todescribe all 6D F-theory models that have fewer than seven tensor multiplets or more than 150 neutral scala…
Let f:X-->Y be a semi-stable family of complex abelian varieties over a curve Y of genus q, and smooth over the complement of s points. If F(1,0) denotes the non-flat (1,0) part of the corresponding variation of Hodge structures, the Arakelov inequalities say that 2deg(F(1,0)) is bounded from above by g=rank(F(1,0))(2q-2+s). We show that for s>0 families reaching this bound are isogenous to the g-fold product of a modular family of elliptic curves, and a constant abelian variety. For s=0, if the flat part of the VHS is defined over the rational numbers, the family is isogeneous to the g-fold p…

For a K3 surface S, we study motivic invariants of stable pairs moduli spaces associated to 3-fold thickenings of S. We conjecture suitable deformation and divisibility invariances for the Betti realization. Our conjectures, together with earlier calculations of Kawai-Yoshioka, imply a full determination of the theory in terms of the Hodge numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points of S. The work may be viewed as the third in a sequence of formulas starting with Yau-Zaslow and Katz-Klemm-Vafa (each recovering the former). Numerical data suggest the motivic invariants are linked to the Mathieu M_…
We investigate the mathematical properties of the class of Calabi-Yau four-folds recently found in [arXiv:1303.1832]. This class consists of 921,497 configuration matrices which correspond to manifolds that are described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. For each manifold in the list, we compute the full Hodge diamond as well as additional topological invariants such as Chern classes and intersection numbers. Using this data, we conclude that there are at least 36,779 topologically distinct manifolds in our list. We also study the fibration structure of these manifold…
