In this work we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the $p$-Laplacian equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions set in bounded thin domains as
$$R^\varepsilon=\left\lbrace(x,y)\in\mathbb{R}^2:x\in(0,1)\mbox{ and }0<y<\varepsilon G\left(x,{x}/{\varepsilon}\right)\right\rbrace.$$
We take a smooth function $G:(0,1)\times\mathbb{R} \mapsto \mathbb{R}$, $L$-periodic in the second variable, which allows us to consider locally periodic oscillations at the upper boundary. The thin domain situation is established passing to the limit in the solutions as the positive parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to zero.
We consider a one-phase free boundary problem involving a fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^α$, $0<α<1,$ and we prove that ``flat free boundaries" are $C^{1,γ}$. We thus extend the known result for the case $α=1/2.$
In this work we use reiterated homogenization and unfolding operator approach to study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the $p$-Laplacian equation with Neumann boundary conditions set in a rough thin domain with concentrated terms on the boundary. We study weak, resonant and high roughness, respectively. In the three cases, we deduce the effective equation capturing the dependence on the geometry of the thin channel and the neighborhood where the concentrations take place.
Boundary conditions for Bismut's hypoelliptic Laplacian which naturally correspond to Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions for Hodge Laplacians are considered. Those are related with specific boundary conditions for the differential and its various adjoints. Once the closed realizations of those operators are well understood, the commutation of the differential with the resolvent of the hypoelliptic Laplacian is checked with other properties like the PT-symmetry, which are important for the spectral analysis.
We study the local structure and the regularity of free boundaries of segregated critical configurations involving the square root of the laplacian. We develop an improvement of flatness theory and, as a consequence of this and Almgren's monotonicity formula, we obtain partial regularity (up to a small dimensional set) of the nodal set, thus extending the known resultsfor the standard diffusion to some anomalous case.
We provide a corrector theory for the strong approximation of fields inside composites made from two materials with different power law behavior. The correctors are used to develop bounds on the local singularity strength for gradient fields inside micro-structured media. The bounds are multi-scale in nature and can be used to measure the amplification of applied macroscopic fields by the microstructure.
In this paper we establish new quantitative stability estimates with respect to domain perturbations for all the eigenvalues of both the Neumann and the Dirichlet Laplacian. Our main results follow from an abstract lemma stating that it is actually sufficient to provide an estimate on suitable projection operators. Whereas this lemma could be applied under different regularity assumptions on the domain, here we use it to estimate the spectrum in Lipschitz and in so-called Reifenberg-flat domains. Our argument also relies on suitable extension techniques and on an estimate on the decay of the e…

A corrector theory for the strong approximation of gradient fields inside periodic composites made from two materials with different power law behavior is provided. Each material component has a distinctly different exponent appearing in the constitutive law relating gradient to flux. The correctors are used to develop bounds on the local singularity strength for gradient fields inside micro-structured media. The bounds are multi-scale in nature and can be used to measure the amplification of applied macroscopic fields by the microstructure. The results in this paper are developed for material…
We study asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a bounded domain in $ \R^n$. Our main results include an explicit remainder estimate in the Weyl formula for the Dirichlet Laplacian on an arbitrary bounded domain, sufficient conditions for the validity of the Weyl formula for the Neumann Laplacian on a domain with continuous boundary in terms of smoothness of the boundary and a remainder estimate in this formula. In particular, we show that the Weyl formula holds true for the Neumann Laplacian on a $ \Lip_α$-domain whenever $ (d-1)/α<d $, prove that the remainder in this for…
For a one-phase free boundary problem involving a fractional Laplacian, we prove that "flat free boundaries" are $C^{1,α}$. We recover the regularity results of Caffarelli for viscosity solutions of the classical Bernoulli-type free boundary problem with the standard Laplacian.
We study a free boundary optimization problem in heat conduction, ruled by the infinity-Laplace operator, with lower temperature bound and a volume constraint. We obtain existence and regularity results and derive geometric properties for the solution and the free boundaries.
We prove $C^{2,α}$ regularity of sufficiently flat free boundaries, for the thin one-phase problem in which the free boundary occurs on a lower dimensional subspace. This problem appears also as a model of a one-phase free boundary problem in the context of the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{1/2}$.
We study the eigenvalue problem for the Neumann-Laplace operator in conformal regular planar domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}$. Conformal regular domains support the Poincaré inequality and this allows us to estimate the variation of the eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian upon domain perturbation via energy type integrals. Boundaries of such domains can have any Hausdorff dimension between one and two.
In this work we analyze the solutions of a $p$-Laplacian equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions set in a family of rough domains with a nonlinear term concentrated on the boundary. At the limit, we get a nonlinear boundary condition capturing the oscillatory geometry of the strip where the reactions take place.
The paper makes use of recent results in the theory of Banach lattices and positive operators to deal with abstract semilinear equations. The aim is to work with minimal or no regularity conditions on the boundary of the domains, where the usual arguments based on maximum principles do not apply. A key result is an application of Kato's inequality to prove a comparison theorem for eigenfunctions that only requires interior regularity and avoids the use of the Hopf boundary maximum principle. We demonstrate the theory on an abstract degenerate logistic equation by proving the existence, uniquen…
We study the nonlinear and nonlocal Cauchy problem \[ \partial_{t}u+\mathcal{L}φ(u)=0 \quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^{N}\times\mathbb{R}_+,\qquad u(\cdot,0)=u_0, \] where $\mathcal{L}$ is a Lévy-type nonlocal operator with a kernel having a singularity at the origin as that of the fractional Laplacian. The nonlinearity $φ$ is nondecreasing and continuous, and the initial datum $u_0$ is assumed to be in $L^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions. For a wide class of nonlinearities, including the porous media case, $φ(u)=|u|^{m-1}u$, $m>1$, these solutions turn out to be…
We look for solutions of $(-Δ)^s u+f(u) = 0$ in a bounded smooth domain $Ω$, $s\in(0,1)$, with a strong singularity at the boundary. In particular, we are interested in solutions which are $L^1(Ω)$ and higher order with respect to dist$(x,\partialΩ)^{s-1}$. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of such a solution. Roughly speaking, these functions are the real fractional counterpart of "large solutions" in the classical setting.
This article is concerned with maximal accretive realizations of geometric Kramers-Fokker-Planck operators on manifolds with boundaries. A general class of boundary conditions is introduced which ensures the maximal accretivity and some global subelliptic estimates. Those estimates imply nice spectral properties as well as exponential decay properties for the associated semigroup. Admissible boundary conditions cover a wide range of applications for the usual scalar Kramer-Fokker-Planck equation or Bismut's hypoelliptic Laplacian.
We derive effective wall-laws for Stokes systems with inhomogeneous boundary conditions in three dimensional bounded domains with curved rough boundaries. No-slip boundary condition is given on the locally periodic rough boundary parts with characteristic roughness size $ε$ and boundary data is assumed to be supported in the nonoscillatory smooth boundary. Based on the analysis of a boundary layer cell problem depending on geometry of the fictitious boundary and roughness shape, boundary layer approximations are constructed using orthogonal tangential vectors and normal vector on the fictitiou…
The goal of the paper is four-fold. In the setting of non-smooth spaces with Ricci curvature lower bounds (more precisely RCD(K,N) metric measure spaces): - we develop an intrinsic theory of Laplacian bounds in viscosity sense and in a pointwise, heat flow related, sense, showing their equivalence also with Laplacian bounds in distributional sense; - relying on these tools, we establish a PDE principle relating lower Ricci curvature bounds to the preservation of Laplacian lower bounds under the evolution via the $p$-Hopf-Lax semigroup, for general exponents $p\in[1,\infty)$. This principle adm…
Let $Ω$ be a domain in $\mathbf R^d$ and $h(φ)=\sum^d_{k,l=1}(\partial_kφ, c_{kl}\partial_lφ)$ a quadratic form on $L_2(Ω)$ with domain $C_c^\infty(Ω)$ where the $c_{kl}$ are real symmetric $L_\infty(Ω)$-functions with $C(x)=(c_{kl}(x))>0$ for almost all $x\in Ω$. Further assume there are $a, δ>0$ such that $a^{-1}d_Γ^δ\,I\le C\le a\,d_Γ^δ\,I$ for $d_Γ\le 1$ where $d_Γ$ is the Euclidean distance to the boundary $Γ$ of $Ω$. We assume that $Γ$ is Ahlfors $s$-regular and if $s$, the Hausdorff dimension of $Γ$, is larger or equal to $d-1$ we also assume a mild uniformity property for $Ω$ in the ne…
In underwater acoustic waveguides a pressure field can be decomposed over three kinds of modes: the propagating modes, the radiating modes and the evanescent modes. In this paper, we analyze the effects produced by a randomly perturbed free surface and an uneven bottom topography on the coupling mechanism between these three kinds of modes. Using an asymptotic analysis based on a separation of scales technique we derive the asymptotic form of the distribution of the forward mode amplitudes. We show that the surface and bottom fluctuations affect the propagating-mode amplitudes mainly in the sa…
We study the regularity of the free boundary in the parabolic obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ (and more general integro-differential operators) in the regime $s>\frac{1}{2}$. We prove that once the free boundary is $C^1$ it is actually $C^{2,α}$. To do so, we establish a boundary Harnack inequality in $C^1$ and $C^{1,α}$ (moving) domains, providing that the quotient of two solutions of the linear equation, that vanish on the boundary, is as smooth as the boundary. As a consequence of our results we also establish for the first time optimal regularity of such solutions to…
We consider the Navier-Stokes equation in a domain with irregular boundaries. The irregularity is modeled by a spatially homogeneous random process, with typical size $\eps \ll 1$. In a parent paper, we derived a homogenized boundary condition of Navier type as $\eps \to 0$. We show here that for a large class of boundaries, this Navier condition provides a $O(\eps^{3/2} |\ln \eps|^{1/2})$ approximation in $L^2$, instead of $O(\eps^{3/2})$ for periodic irregularities. Our result relies on the study of an auxiliary boundary layer system. Decay properties of this boundary layer are deduced from …
We show the analytic continuation of the resolvent of the Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces on differential forms, including high energy estimates in strips. This is achieved by placing the spectral family of the Laplacian within the framework developed, and applied to scalar problems, by the author recently, roughly by extending the problem across the boundary of the compactification of the asymptotically hyperbolic space in a suitable manner. The main novelty is that the non-scalar nature of the operator is dealt with by relating it to a problem on an asymptotically Minkowski spa…
In this paper, we study the dynamics of a two-species competition model with two different free boundaries in heterogeneous time-periodic environment, where the two species adopt a combination of random movement and advection upward or downward along the resource gradient. We show that the dynamics of this model can be classified into four cases, which forms a spreading-vanishing quartering. The notion of the minimal habitat size for spreading is introduced to determine if species can always spread. Rough estimates of the asymptotic spreading speed of free boundaries and the long time behavior…
In this paper, we mainly study eigenvalue problems of p-Laplacian on domains with an interior hole. Firstly we prove Faber-Krahn-type inequalities, and Cheng-type eigenvalue comparison theorems on manifolds. Secondly, we prove a comparison theorem for eigenvalues with inner Dirichlet and outer Neumann boundary in minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space. Lastly we give a sharp estimate of the eigenvalue (with outer Dirichlet and inner Neumann boundaries) in terms of the Dircihlet eigenvalue, and also we give an upper bound of the eigenvalue with inner Dirichlet and outer Neumann problems by the…
The validity of Weyl's law for the Steklov problem on domains with Lipschitz boundaries is a well-known open question in spectral geometry. We answer this question in two dimensions and show that Weyl's law holds for an even larger class of surfaces with rough boundaries. This class includes domains with interior cusps as well as 'slow' exterior cusps. Moreover, the condition on the speed of exterior cusps cannot be improved, which makes our result in a sense optimal. The proof is based on the methods of Suslina and Agranovich combined with some observations about the boundary behaviour of con…
The general concern of this paper is the effect of rough boundaries on fluids. We consider a stationary flow, governed by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, in an infinite domain bounded by two horizontal rough plates. The roughness is modeled by a spatially homogeneous random field, with characteristic size $\eps$. A mathematical analysis of the flow for small $\eps$ is performed. The Navier's wall law is rigorously deduced from this analysis.
Given an Euclidean domain with very mild regularity properties, we prove that there exist perturbations of the Dirichlet Laplacian of the form $-(I+S_ε)Δ$ with $\|S_ε\|_{L^2\to L^2}\leq ε$ whose high energy eigenfunctions are quantum uniquely ergodic (QUE). Moreover, if we impose stronger regularity on the domain, the same result holds with $\|S_ε\|_{L^2\to H^γ}\leq ε$ for $γ>0$ depending on the domain. We also give a proof of a local Weyl law for domains with rough boundaries.
We study the regularity of the free boundary in the obstacle for the $p$-Laplacian, $\min\bigl\{-Δ_p u,\,u-φ\bigr\}=0$ in $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$. Here, $Δ_p u=\textrm{div}\bigl(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u\bigr)$, and $p\in(1,2)\cup(2,\infty)$. Near those free boundary points where $\nabla φ\neq0$, the operator $Δ_p$ is uniformly elliptic and smooth, and hence the free boundary is well understood. However, when $\nabla φ=0$ then $Δ_p$ is singular or degenerate, and nothing was known about the regularity of the free boundary at those points. Here we study the regularity of the free boundary where $\…

We study regularity results for nonlinear parabolic systems of $p$-Laplacian type with inhomogeneous boundary and initial data, with $p\in(\frac{2n}{n+2},\infty)$. We show bounds on the gradient of solutions in the Lebesgue-spaces with arbitrary large integrability exponents and natural dependences on the right hand side and the boundary data. In particular, we provide a new proof of the global non-linear Calderón-Zygmund theory for such systems. Our method makes use of direct estimates on the solution minus its boundary values and hence is considerably shorter than the available higher integr…
In this paper we examine the Laplacian on the product of two asymptotically hyperbolic (or conformally compact, as they are often called) spaces from the point of view of geometric scattering theory. In particular, we describe the asymptotic behavior of the resolvent applied to Schwartz functions and that of the resolvent kernel itself. We use these results to find the Martin boundary of the product space. This behaves (nearly) as expected when the factors have no $L^2$ eigenvalues, but it experiences a substantial collapse in the presence of such eigenvalues.
We revisit the homogenization problem for the Poisson equation in periodically perforated domains with zero Neumann data at the boundary of the holes and prescribed Dirichlet data at the outer boundary. It is known that, if the periodicity of the holes goes to zero but their volume fraction remains fixed and positive, the limit problem is a Dirichlet boundary value problem posed in the domain without the holes, and the effective diffusion coefficients are non-trivially modified; if that volume fraction goes to zero instead, i.e. the holes are dilute, the effective operator remains the Laplacia…
This work is a continuation of [E. Bonnetier, D.Bresch, V. Milisic, submitted]; it deals with rough boundaries in the simplified context of a Poisson equation. We impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the periodic microscopic perturbation of a flat edge on one side and natural homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions are applied on the inlet/outlet of the domain. To prevent oscillations on the Neumann-like boundaries, we introduce a microscopic vertical corrector defined in a rough quarter-plane. In [E. Bonnetier, D.Bresch, V. Milisic, submitted] we studied a priori estimates in this setting;…
