In their recent inspiring paper Mironov and Morozov claim a surprisingly simple expansion formula for the Kontsevich-Witten tau-function in terms of the Schur Q-functions. Here we provide a similar conjecture for the Brézin-Gross-Witten tau-function. Moreover, we identify both tau-functions of the KdV hierarchy, which describe intersection numbers on the moduli spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces, with the hypergeometric solutions of the BKP hierarchy.
In this paper, we prove that the generalized Brézin-Gross-Witten tau-function is a hypergeometric solution of the BKP hierarchy with simple weight generating function. We claim that it describes a spin version of the strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers. A family of the hypergeometric tau-functions of the BKP hierarchy, corresponding to the rational weight generating functions, is investigated. In particular, the cut-and-join operators are constructed, and the explicit description of the BKP Sato Grassmannian points is derived. Representatives of this family can be associated with interesting fam…
In this paper, we investigated four applications of the gauge transformation for the BKP hierarchy. Firstly, it is found that the orbit of the gauge transformation for the constrained BKP hierarchy defines a special $(2 +1)$-dimensional Toda lattice equation structure. Then the tau function of the BKP hierarchy generated by the gauge transformation is showed to be the Pfaffian. And the higher Fay-like identities for the BKP hierarchy is also obtained through the gauge transformation. At last, the compatibility between the additional symmetry and the gauge transformation of the BKP hierarchy is…
In this paper, we systematically develop the "ghost" symmetry of the BKP hierarchy through its actions on the Lax operator $L$, the eigenfunctions and the $τ$ function. In this process, the spectral representation of the eigenfunctions and a new potential are introduced by using squared eigenfunction potential(SEP) of the BKP hierarchy. Moreover, the bilinear identity of the constrained BKP hierarchy and Adler-Shiota-van-Moerbeke formula of the BKP hierarchy are re-derived compactly by means of the spectral representation and "ghost" symmetry.
In this paper, we defined a new multi-component BKP hierarchy which takes values in a commutative subalgebra of $gl(N,\mathbb C)$. After this, we give the gauge transformation of this commutative multi-component BKP (CMBKP) hierarchy. Meanwhile we construct a new constrained CMBKP hierarchy which contains some new integrable systems including coupled KdV equations under a certain reduction. After this, the quantum torus symmetry and quantum torus constraint on the tau function of the commutative multi-component BKP hierarchy will be constructed.
Inspired by Okounkov's work [\emph{Selecta Mathematica}, 7(1):57--81, 2001] which relates KP hierarchy to determinant point process, we establish a relationship between BKP hierarchy and Pfaffian point process. We prove that the correlation function of the shifted Schur measures on strict partitions can be expressed as a Pfaffian of skew symmetric matrix kernel, whose elememts are certain vacuum expectations of neutral fermions. We further show that the matrix integrals solution of BKP hierarchy can also induce a certain Pfaffian point process.
The BKP hierarchy has a two-component analogue (the 2-BKP hierarchy). Dispersionless limit of this multi-component hierarchy is considered on the level of the $τ$-function. The so called dispersionless Hirota equations are obtained from the Hirota equations of the $τ$-function. These dispersionless Hirota equations turn out to be equivalent to a system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Other relevant equations, in particular, dispersionless Lax equations, can be derived from these fundamental equations. For comparison, another approach based on auxiliary linear equations is also presented.
In this paper, we construct the additional symmetries of the supersymmetric BKP(SBKP) hierarchy. These additional flows constitute a B type $SW_{1+\infty}$ Lie algebra because of the B type reduction of the supersymmetric BKP hierarchy. Further we generalize the SBKP hierarchy to a supersymmetric two-component BKP (S2BKP) hierarchy equipped with a B type $SW_{1+\infty}\bigoplus SW_{1+\infty}$ Lie algebra. As a Bosonic reduction of the S2BKP hierarchy, we define a new constrained system called the supersymmetric Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy of type D which admits a $N=2$ supersymmetric Block type…
We derive a formula for the connected $n$-point functions of a tau-function of the BKP hierarchy in terms of its affine coordinates. This is a BKP-analogue of a formula for KP tau-functions proved by Zhou in [arXiv:1507.01679]. Moreover, we prove a simple relation between the KP-affine coordinates of a tau-function $τ(\mathbf{t})$ of the KdV hierarchy and the BKP-affine coordinates of $τ(\mathbf{t}/2)$. As applications, we present a new algorithm to compute the free energies of the Witten-Kontsevich tau-function and the Brézin-Gross-Witten tau-function.
We prove that multiparameter Schur $Q$-functions, which include as specializations factorial Schur $Q$-functions and classical Schur $Q$-functions, provide solutions of the BKP hierarchy
We construct generalized additional symmetries of a two-component BKP hierarchy defined by two pseudo-differential Lax operators. These additional symmetry flows form a Block type algebra with some modified(or additional) terms because of a B type reduction condition of this integrable hierarchy. Further we show that the D type Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy, which is a reduction of the two-component BKP hierarchy, possess a complete Block type additional symmetry algebra. That D type Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy has a similar algebraic structure as the bigraded Toda hierarchy which is a differentia…
Restricting a linear system for the KP hierarchy to those independent variables t\_n with odd n, its compatibility (Zakharov-Shabat conditions) leads to the "odd KP hierarchy". The latter consists of pairs of equations for two dependent variables, taking values in a (typically noncommutative) associative algebra. If the algebra is commutative, the odd KP hierarchy is known to admit reductions to the BKP and the CKP hierarchy. We approach the odd KP hierarchy and its relation to BKP and CKP in different ways, and address the question whether noncommutative versions of the BKP and the CKP equati…
In this article, we will construct the additional perturbative quantum torus symmetry of the dispersionless BKP hierarchy basing on the $W_{\infty}$ infinite dimensional Lie symmetry. These results show that the complete quantum torus symmetry is broken from the BKP hierarchy to its dispersionless hierarchy. Further a series of additional flows of the multicomponent BKP hierarchy will be defined and these flows constitute an $N$-folds direct product of the positive half of the quantum torus symmetries.
In this paper, under the constraints of the BKP(CKP) hierarchy, a crucial observation is that the odd dynamical variable $u_{2k+1}$ can be explicitly expressed by the even dynamical variable $u_{2k}$ in the Lax operator $L$ through a new operator $B$. Using operator $B$, the essential differences between the BKP hierarchy and the CKP hierarchy are given by the flow equations and the recursion operators under the $(2n+1)$-reduction. The formal formulas of the recursion operators for the BKP and CKP hierarchy under $(2n+1)$-reduction are given. To illustrate this method, the two recursion operat…
In this paper, we construct the bilinear identities for the wave functions of an extended B-type Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (BKP) hierarchy, which contains two types of (2+1)-dimensional Sawada-Kotera equation with a self-consistent source (2d-SKwS-I and 2d-SKwS-II). By introducing an auxiliary variable corresponding to the extended flow for the BKP hierarchy, we find the tau-function and the bilinear identities for this extended BKP hierarchy. The bilinear identities can generate all the Hirota's bilinear equations for the zero-curvature forms of this extended BKP hierarchy. As examples, the Hiro…
In this paper, we study Giambelli type formula in the KP and the BKP hierarchies. Any formal power series $τ(x)$ can be expanded by the Schur functions. It is known that $τ(x)$ with $τ(0)=1$ is a solution of the KP hierarchy if and only if the coefficients of this expansion satisfy Giambelli type formula. It is proved by using Sato's theory of the KP hierarchy. Here we give an alternative proof based on the previously established results on the equivalence of the addition formulae and the KP hierarchy without using Sato's theory. This method of the proof can also be applied to the case of the …
It is shown that all $τ$-functions of BKP hierarchy can be written as Pfaffians of skew-symmetric matrices. $τ$-functions of BKP hierarchy are parameterized by points in the universal orthogonal Grassmannian manifold (UOGM). The UOGM is a disjoint union of Schubert cells, we classify and give explicit parameterization for points in each Schubert cell by constructing a frame for UOGM in the sense of Sato. $τ$-functions are then expressed in terms of these frames and Schur-Q functions. For concreteness we give a comprehensive study for the $τ$-functions of $B$-Toda which can be viewed as a finit…
We introduce a useful and rather simple class of BKP tau functions which which we shall call "easy tau functions". We consider two versions of BKP hierarchy, one we will call "small BKP hierarchy" (sBKP) related to $O(\infty)$ introduced in Date et al and "large BKP hierarchy" (lBKP) related to $O(2\infty +1)$ introduced in Kac and van de Leur (which is closely related to the large $O(2\infty)$ DKP hierarchy (lDKP) introduced in Jimbo and Miwa). Actually "easy tau functions" of the sBKP hierarchy were already considered in Harnad et al, here we are more interested in the lBKP case and also the…
We consider special series in ratios of the Schur functions which are defined by integers $\textsc{f}\ge 0$ and $\textsc{e} \le 2$, and also by the set of $3k$ parameters $n_i,q_i,t_i,\,i=1,..., k$. These series may be presented in form of matrix integrals. In case $k=0$ these series generates Hurwitz numbers for the $d$-fold branched covering of connected surfaces with a given Euler characteristic $\textsc{e}$ and arbitrary profiles at $\textsc{f}$ ramification points. If $k>0$ they generate weighted sums of the Hurwitz numbers with additional ramification points which are distributed between…
In this paper, we construct the quantum Torus symmetry of the KP hierarchy and further derive the quantum torus constraint on the tau function of the KP hierarchy. That means we give a nice representation of the quantum Torus Lie algebra in the KP system by acting on its tau function. Comparing to the $W_{\infty}$ symmetry, this quantum Torus symmetry has a nice algebraic structure with double indices. Further by reduction, we also construct the quantum Torus symmetries of the KdV and BKP hierarchies and further derive the quantum Torus constraints on their tau functions. These quantum Torus c…
We consider $d$-fold branched coverings of the projective plane $\mathbb{RP}^2$ and show that the hypergeometric tau function of the BKP hierarchy of Kac and van de Leur is the generating function for weighted sums of the related Hurwitz numbers. In particular we get the $\mathbb{RP}^2$ analogues of the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ generating functions proposed by Okounkov and by Goulden and Jackson. Other examples are Hurwitz numbers weighted by the Hall-Littlewood and by the Macdonald polynomials. We also consider integrals of tau functions which generate projective Hurwitz numbers and Hurwitz numbers re…
We introduce hypergeometric functions related to projective Schur functions $Q_λ$ and describe their properties. Linear equations, integral representations and Pfaffian representations are obtained. These hypergeometric functions are vacuum expectations of free fermion fields, and thus these functions are tau functions of the so-called BKP hierarchy of integrable equations.
We show that any polynomial tau-function of the s-component KP and the BKP hierarchies can be interpreted as a zero mode of an appropriate combinatorial generating function. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas for all polynomial tau-functions of these hierarchies in terms of Schur polynomials and Q-Schur polynomials respectively. We also obtain formulas for polynomial tau-functions of the reductions of the s-component KP hierarchy associated to partitions in s parts.
We consider multiple sums and multi-integrals as tau functions of the BKP hierarchy using neutral fermions as the simplest tool for deriving these. The sums are over projective Schur functions $Q_α$ for strict partitions $α$. We consider two types of such sums: weighted sums of $Q_α$ over strict partitions $α$ and sums over products $Q_αQ_γ$. In this way we obtain discrete analogues of the beta-ensembles ($β=1,2,4$). Continuous versions are represented as multiple integrals. Such sums and integrals are of interest in a number of problems in mathematics and physics.
We propose a new construction of an integrable hierarchy associated to any infinite series of Frobenius manifolds satisfying a certain stabilization condition. We study these hierarchies for Frobenius manifolds associated to $A_N$, $D_N$ and $B_N$ singularities. In the case of $A_N$ Frobenius manifolds our hierarchy turns out to coincide with the KP hierarchy; for $B_N$ Frobenius manifolds it coincides with the BKP hierarchy; and for $D_N$ hierarchy it is a certain reduction of the 2-component BKP hierarchy. As a side product to these results we illustrate the enumerative meaning of certain co…
We construct the additional symmetries and derive the Adler-Shiota-van Moerbeke formula for the two-component BKP hierarchy. We also show that the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies of type D, which are reduced from the two-component BKP hierarchy, possess symmetries written as the action of a series of linear Virasoro operators on the tau function. It results in that the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies of type D coincide with Dubrovin and Zhang's hierarchies associated to the Frobenius manifolds for Coxeter groups of type D, and that every solution of such a hierarchy together with the string equation…
We continue the study of the B-Toda hierarchy (the Toda lattice with the constraint of type B) which can be regarded as a discretization of the BKP hierarchy. We introduce the tau-function of the B-Toda hierarchy and obtain the bilinear equations for it. Examples of soliton tau-functions are presented in the explicit form.
Adler, Shiota and van Moerbeke observed that a tau function of the Pfaff lattice is a square root of a tau function of the Toda lattice hierarchy of Ueno and Takasaki. In this paper we give a representation theoretical explanation for this phenomenon. We consider 2-BKP and two-component 2-KP tau functions. We shall show that a square of a BKP tau function is equal to a certain two-component KP tau function and a square of a 2-BKP tau function is equal to a certain two-component 2-KP tau function.
We present a systematic way to construct solutions of the (n=5)-reduction of the BKP and CKP hierarchies from the general tau function of the KP hierarchy. We obtain the one-soliton, two-soliton, and periodic solution for the bi-directional Sawada-Kotera (bSK), the bi-directional Kaup-Kupershmidt (bKK) and also the bi-directional Satsuma-Hirota (bSH) equation. Different solutions such as left- and right-going solitons are classified according to the symmetries of the 5th roots of exp(i epsilon). Furthermore, we show that the soliton solutions of the n-reduction of the BKP and CKP hierarchies w…
In this work we study the tau-function $Z^{1D}$ of the KP hierarchy specified by the topological 1D gravity. As an application, we present two types of algorithms to compute the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$. The first is to use (fat or thin) topological recursion formulas emerging from the Virasoro constraints for $Z^{1D}$; and the second is to use a formula for the connected $n$-point functions of a KP tau-function in terms of its affine coordinates on the Sato Grassmannian. This is a sequel to an earlier work.
We derive an explicit generating function of correlations functions of an arbitrary tau-function of the KdV hierarchy. In particular applications, our formulation gives closed formulæ of a new type for the generating series of intersection numbers of $ψ$-classes as well as of mixed $ψ$- and $κ$-classes in full genera.
In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Alexandrov that the generalized Brezin-Gross-Witten tau-functions are hypergeometric tau functions of BKP hierarchy after re-scaling. In particular, this shows that the original BGW tau-function, which has enumerative geometric interpretations, can be represented as a linear combination of Schur Q-polynomials with simple coefficients.
We study multi-matrix models which may be viewed as integrals of products of tau functions which depend on the eigenvalues of products of random matrices. In the present paper we consider tau functions of the hierarchy the two-component KP (semiinfinite relativistic Toda lattice) and of hierarchy of the BKP introduced by Kac and van de Leur. Sometimes such integrals are tau functions themselves. We consider models which generate Hurwitz numbers $H^{e},f$, where $e$ is the Euler characteristic of the base surface and $f$ is the number of branch points. We show that in case the integrands contai…
In this paper, we discuss the properties of the generating functions of spin Hurwitz numbers. In particular, for spin Hurwitz numbers with arbitrary ramification profiles, we construct the weighed sums which are given by Orlov's hypergeometric solutions of the 2-component BKP hierarchy. We derive the closed algebraic formulas for the correlation functions associated with these tau-functions, and under reasonable analytical assumptions we prove the loop equations (the blobbed topological recursion). Finally, we prove a version of topological recursion for the spin Hurwitz numbers with the spin …
We study the relation between the periodic Benjamin-Ono equation with discrete Laplacian and the two dimensional Toda hierarchy. We introduce the tau-functions tau_pm(z) for the periodic Benjamin-Ono equation, construct two families of integrals of motion {M_1,M_2,cdots}, {overline{M}_1,overline{M}_2,cdots}, and calculate some examples of the bilinear equations using the Hamiltonian structure. We confirmed that some of the low lying bilinear equations agree with the ones obtained from a certain reduction of the 2D Toda hierarchy.
Using matrix model, Mironov and Morozov recently gave a formula which represents Kontsevich-Witten tau-function as a linear expansion of Schur Q-polynomials. In this paper, we will show directly that the Q-polynomial expansion in this formula satisfies the Virasoro constraints, and consequently obtain a proof of this formula without using matrix model. We also give a proof for Alexandrov's conjecture that Kontsevich-Witten tau-function is a hypergeometric tau-function of the BKP hierarchy after re-scaling.
We derive exact and asymptotic results for random partitions from general results in the semi-classical analysis of coherent states applied to the classical periodic Benjamin-Ono equation at critical regularity $s= -1/2$. We find classical $dF_{\star |v} (c| \overline{\varepsilon})$ and quantum $d\hat{F}^{η_{NS}}( c | \hbar, \overline{\varepsilon})|_Ψ$ conserved densities for this system with dispersion coefficient $\overline{\varepsilon}$ extending Nazarov-Sklyanin (2013). For quantum stationary states, this conserved density is $dF_λ(c | \varepsilon_2, \varepsilon_1)$ the Rayleigh measure of…
Spin Hurwitz numbers are related to characters of the Sergeev group, which are the expansion coefficients of the Q Schur functions, depending on odd times and on a subset of all Young diagrams. These characters involve two dual subsets: the odd partitions (OP) and the strict partitions (SP). The Q Schur functions Q_R with R\in SP are common eigenfunctions of cut-and-join operators W_Δwith Δ\in OP. The eigenvalues of these operators are the generalized Sergeev characters, their algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of Q Schur functions. Similarly to the case of the ordinary Hurwitz numbers, the …
We consider the pull-back of a natural sequence of cohomology classes $Θ_{g,n}\in H^{2(2g-2+n)}(\overline{\cal M}_{g,n})$ to the moduli space of stable maps ${\cal M}^g_n(\mathbb{P}^1,d)$. These classes are related to the Brézin-Gross-Witten tau function of the KdV hierarchy via $Z^{BGW}(\hbar,t_0,t_1,...)=\exp\sum\frac{\hbar^{2g-2}}{n!}\int_{\overline{\cal M}_{g,n}}Θ_{g,n}\cdot\prod_{j=1}^nψ_j^{k_j}\prod t_{k_j}$. Insertions of the pull-backs of the classes $Θ_{g,n}$ into the integrals defining Gromov-Witten invariants define new invariants which we show in the case of target $\mathbb{P}^1$ a…
We present a review of the spin Hurwitz numbers, which count the ramified coverings with spin structures. They are related to peculiar $Q$ Schur functions, which are actually related to characters of the Sergeev group. This allows one to put the whole story into the modern context of matrix models and integrable hierarchies. Hurwitz partition functions are actually broader than conventional $τ$-functions, but reduce to them in particular circumstances. We explain, how a special $d$-soliton $τ$-functions of KdV and Veselov-Novikov hierarchies generate the spin Hurwitz numbers $H^\pm\left( Γ^r_d…
In this article, we classify the solutions of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy into degenerate and non-degenerate cases. We show that every non-degenerate solution is determined by a function $\mathcal{H}(z_1,z_2)$ of two variables. We interpret these non-degenerate solutions as defining evolutions on the space $\mathfrak{D}$ of pairs of conformal mappings $(g,f)$, where $g$ is a univalent function on the exterior of the unit disc, $f$ is a univalent function on the unit disc, normalized such that $g(\infty)=\infty$, $f(0)=0$ and $f'(0)g'(\infty)=1$. For each solution, we show how to define t…
