For each finite classical group $G$, we classify the subgroups of $G$ which act transitively on a $G$-invariant set of subspaces of the natural module, where the subspaces are either totally isotropic or nondegenerate. Our proof uses the classification of the maximal factorisations of almost simple groups. As a first application of these results we classify all point-transitive subgroups of automorphisms of finite thick generalised quadrangles.
A transitive simple subgroup of a finite symmetric group is very rarely contained in a full wreath product in product action. All such simple permutation groups are determined in this paper. This remarkable conclusion is reached after a definition and detailed examination of `Cartesian decompositions' of the permuted set, relating them to certain `Cartesian systemsof subgroups'. These concepts, and the bijective connections between them, are explored in greater generality, with specific future applications in mind.
A permutation group is called semiprimitive if each of its normal subgroups is either transitive or semiregular. Given nontrivial finite transitive permutation groups $L_1$ and $L_2$ with $L_1$ not semiprimitive, we construct an infinite family of rank two amalgams of permutation type $[L_1,L_2]$ and Borel subgroups of strictly increasing order. As an application, we show that there is no bound on the order of edge-stabilisers in locally $[L_1,L_2]$ graphs. We also consider the corresponding question for amalgams of rank $k\geq 3$. We completely resolve this by showing that the order of the Bo…
In the first paper in this series we estimated the probability that a random permutation $π\in\mathcal{S}_n$ has a fixed set of a given size. In this paper, we elaborate on the same method to estimate the probability that $π$ has $m$ disjoint fixed sets of prescribed sizes $k_1,\dots,k_m$, where $k_1+\cdots+k_m=n$. We deduce an estimate for the proportion of permutations contained in a transitive subgroup other than $\mathcal{S}_n$ or $\mathcal{A}_n$. This theorem consists of two parts: an estimate for the proportion of permutations contained in an imprimitive transitive subgroup, and an estim…
For a finite group $G$ and an inverse-closed generating set $C$ of $G$, let $Aut(G;C)$ consist of those automorphisms of $G$ which leave $C$ invariant. We define an $Aut(G;C)$-invariant normal subgroup $Φ(G;C)$ of $G$ which has the property that, for any $Aut(G;C)$-invariant normal set of generators for $G$, if we remove from it all the elements of $Φ(G;C)$, then the remaining set is still an $Aut(G;C)$-invariant normal generating set for $G$. The subgroup $Φ(G;C)$ contains the Frattini subgroup $Φ(G)$ but the inclusion may be proper. The Cayley graph $Cay(G,C)$ is normal edge-transitive if $A…
In this paper we study $G$-arc-transitive graphs $Δ$ where the permutation group $G_x^{Δ(x)}$ induced by the stabiliser $G_x$ of the vertex $x$ on the neighbourhood $Δ(x)$ satisfies the two conditions given in the introduction. We show that for such a $G$-arc-transitive graph $Δ$, if $(x,y)$ is an arc of $Δ$, then the subgroup $G_{x,y}^{[1]}$ of $G$ fixing pointwise $Δ(x)$ and $Δ(y)$ is a $p$-group for some prime $p$. Next we prove that every $G$-locally primitive (respectively quasiprimitive, semiprimitive) graph satisfies our two local hypotheses. Thus this provides a new Thompson-Wielandt-l…
The following problem is considered: if $H$ is a semiregular abelian subgroup of a transitive permutation group $G$ acting on a finite set $X$, find conditions for (non) existence of $G$-invariant partitions of $X$. Conditions presented in this paper are derived by studying spectral properties of associated $G$-invariant digraphs. As an essential tool, irreducible complex characters of $H$ are used. Questions of this kind arise naturally when classifying combinatorial objects which enjoy a certain degree of symmetry. As an illustration, a new and short proof of an old result of Frucht, Graver …
In this paper, we classify finite quasiprimitive permutation groups with a metacyclic transitive subgroup, solving a problem initiated by Wielandt in 1949. It also involves the classification of factorizations of almost simple groups with a metacyclic factor.
We determine the semi-regular subgroups of the 2-transitive permutation groups PGL(2,n), PSL(2,n), PGU(3,n), PSU(3,n), Sz(n) and Ree(n) with n a suitable power of a prime number p.
We prove an upper bound for the number of cyclic transitive subgroups in a finite permutation group and clarify the structure of the groups for which this bound becomes sharp. We also give an application in the theory of number fields.
In this paper we calculate the character table of a sharply $5$-transitive subgroup of ${\rm Alt}(12)$, and of a sharply $4$-transitive subgroup of ${\rm Alt}(11)$. Our presentation of these calculations is new because we make no reference to the sporadic simple Mathieu groups, and instead deduce the desired character tables using only the existence of the stated multiply transitive permutation representations.
This paper studies whether there are distance-transitive graphs arising from the coset actions of $G_2(q)$ on the subfield subgroup $G_2(\sqrt{q})$ or $G_2(q)$ on the Ree subgroup $^2G_2(q)$. It is found that there are no such graphs, even if the groups are extended by outer automorphisms of $G_2(q)$.
We show that any group $G$ is contained in some sharply 2-transitive group $\mathcal{G}$ without a non-trivial abelian normal subgroup. This answers a long-standing open question. The involutions in the groups $\mathcal{G}$ that we construct have no fixed points.
The first main result of this paper is that a finite transitive nonabelian characteristically simple subgroup of a wreath product in product action must lie in the base group of the wreath product. This allows us to characterize nonabelian transitive characteristically simple subgroups $H$ of finite quasiprimitive permutation groups $G$. If the socle of $G$, denoted by $\mbox{soc}(G)$, is nonabelian, then $H$ lies in $\mbox{soc}(G)$. An explicit description is given for the possibilities of $H$ under the condition that $H$ does not contain a nontrivial normal subgroup of $\mbox{soc}(G)$.
A connected graph $Γ=(V,E)$ of valency at least $3$ is called a basic $2$-arc-transitive graph if its full automorphism group has a subgroup $G$ with the following properties: (i) $G$ acts transitively on the set of $2$-arcs of $Γ$, and (ii) every minimal normal subgroup of $G$ has at most two orbits on $V$. In her papers [17,18], Praeger proved a connected $2$-arc-transitive graph of valency at least $3$ is a normal cover of some basic $2$-arc-transitive graph, and characterized the group-theoretic structures for basic $2$-arc-transitive graphs. Based on Praeger's theorems on $2$-arc-transiti…
If $Γ$ is a string C-group which is isomorphic to a transitive subgroup of the symmetric group Sym(n) (other than Sym(n) and the alternating group Alt(n)), then the rank of $Γ$ is at most $n/2+1$, with finitely many exceptions (which are classified). It is conjectured that only the symmetric group has to be excluded.
An action of a group $G$ is highly transitive if $G$ acts transitively on $k$-tuples of distinct points for all $k \geq 1$. Many examples of groups with a rich geometric or dynamical action admit highly transitive actions. We prove that if a group $G$ admits a highly transitive action such that $G$ does not contain the subgroup of finitary alternating permutations, and if $H$ is a confined subgroup of $G$, then the action of $H$ remains highly transitive, possibly after discarding finitely many points. This result provides a tool to rule out the existence of highly transitive actions, and to c…
We show that, there exists a constant $a$ such that, for every subgroup $H$ of a finite group $G$, the number of maximal subgroups of $G$ containing $H$ is bounded above by $a|G:H|^{3/2}$. In particular, a transitive permutation group of degree $n$ has at most $an^{3/2}$ maximal systems of imprimitivity. When $G$ is soluble, generalizing a classic result of Tim Wall, we prove a much stroger bound, that is, the number of maximal subgroups of $G$ containing $H$ is at most $|G:H|-1$.
A permutation group is innately transitive if it has a transitive minimal normal subgroup, which is referred to as a plinth. We study the class of finite, innately transitive permutation groups that can be embedded into wreath products in product action. This investigation is carried out by observing that such a wreath product preserves a natural Cartesian decomposition of the underlying set. Previously we classified the possible embeddings in the case where the plinth is simple. Here we extend that classification and identify several different types of Cartesian decompositions that can be pre…
We consider closed, Weyl-transitive groups of automorphisms of thick buildings. For each element of such a group, we derive a combinatorial formula for its scale and establish the existence of a tidy subgroup for it that equals the stabilizer of a simplex. Simplices whose stabilizers are tidy for some element of the group are characterized in terms of the minimal set of the isometry induced by the element on the Davis-realisation of the building and in terms of the Weyl-distance between them and their image. We use our results to derive some topological properties of closed, Weyl-transitive gr…
A subgroup $H$ of a finite group $G$ is said to be SS-permutable in $G$ if $H$ has a supplement $K$ in $G$ such that $H$ permutes with every Sylow subgroup of $K$. A finite group $G$ is called an SST-group if SS-permutability is a transitive relation on the set of all subgroups of $G$. The structure of SST-groups is investigated in this paper.
We explicitly determine all of the transitive groups of degree p-squared, p a prime, whose Sylow p-subgroup is not the wreath product of two cyclic groups of order p. Furthermore, we provide a general description of the transitive groups of degree p-squared whose Sylow p-subgroup is such a wreath product, and explicitly determine most of them. As applications, we solve the Cayley Isomorphism problem for Cayley objects of an abelian group of order p-squared, explicitly determine the full automorphism group of Cayley graphs of abelian groups of order p-squared, and find all nonnormal Cayley grap…
The Johnson graph $J(v, k)$ has as vertices the $k$-subsets of $\mathcal{V}=\{1,\ldots, v\}$, and two vertices are joined by an edge if their intersection has size $k-1$. An \emph{$X$-strongly incidence-transitive code} in $J (v, k)$ is a proper vertex subset $Γ$ such that the subgroup $X$ of graph automorphisms leaving $Γ$ invariant is transitive on the set $Γ$ of `codewords', and for each codeword $Δ$, the setwise stabiliser $X_Δ$ is transitive on $Δ\times (\mathcal{V}\setminus Δ)$. We classify the \emph{$X$-strongly incidence-transitive codes} in $J(v,k)$ for which $X$ is the symplectic gro…
It is known that the notion of a transitive subgroup of a permutation group $G$ extends naturally to subsets of $G$. We consider subsets of the general linear group $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ acting transitively on flag-like structures, which are common generalisations of $t$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ and bases of $t$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. We give structural characterisations of transitive subsets of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ using the character theory of $\operatorname{GL}(n,q)$ and interprete such subsets as designs in the conjugacy class association scheme …
In this article we study surface subgroups of groups acting simply transitively on vertex sets of certain hyperbolic triangular buildings. Kangaslampi and Vdovina have constructed and classified all groups acting simply transitively on the vertices of hyperbolic triangular buildings of the smallest non-trivial thickness. These groups gave the first examples of cocompact lattices acting simply transitively on vertices of hyperbolic triangular Kac-Moody buildings that are not right-angled. The hyperbolic buildings arise as universal covers of polyhedra glued together from with 15 triangular face…
The Johnson graph J(v,k) has, as vertices, the k-subsets of a v-set V, and as edges the pairs of k-subsets with intersection of size k-1. We introduce the notion of a neighbour-transitive code in J(v,k). This is a vertex subset Γsuch that the subgroup G of graph automorphisms leaving Γinvariant is transitive on both the set Γof `codewords' and also the set of `neighbours' of Γ, which are the non-codewords joined by an edge to some codeword. We classify all examples where the group G is a subgroup of the symmetric group on V and is intransitive or imprimitive on the underlying v-set V. In the r…
In this note, we provide a short and self-contained proof that the braid group on n strands acts transitively on the set of reduced factorizations of a Coxeter element in a Coxeter group of finite rank n into products of reflections. We moreover use the same argument to also show that all factorizations of an element in a parabolic subgroup of W lie as well in this parabolic subgroup.
A graph $\Ga=(V,E)$ is called a Cayley graph of some group $T$ if the automorphism group $\Aut(\Ga)$ contains a subgroup $T$ which acts on regularly on $V$. If the subgroup $T$ is normal in $\Aut(\Ga)$ then $\Ga$ is called a normal Cayley graph of $T$. Let $r$ be an odd prime. Fang et al. \cite{FMW} proved that, with a finite number of exceptions for finite simple group $T$, every connected symmetric Cayley graph of $T$ of valency $r$ is normal. In this paper, employing maximal factorizations of finite almost simple groups, we work out a possible list of those exceptions for $T$.
Suppose that a group $G$ acts transitively on the points of a non-Desarguesian plane, $\mathcal{P}$. We prove first that the Sylow 2-subgroups of $G$ are cyclic or generalized quaternion. We also prove that $\mathcal{P}$ must admit an odd order automorphism group which acts transitively on the set of points of $\mathcal{P}$.
A Cayley Graph for a group $G$ is called normal edge-transitive if it admits an edge-transitive action of some subgroup of the Holomorph of $G$ (the normaliser of a regular copy of $G$ in $\operatorname{Sym}(G)$). We complete the classification of normal edge-transitive Cayley graphs of order a product of two primes by dealing with Cayley graphs for Frobenius groups of such orders. We determine the automorphism groups of these graphs, proving in particular that there is a unique vertex-primitive example, namely the flag graph of the Fano plane.
Let $\mathcal D$ be a nontrivial symmetric $(v,k,λ)$ design, and $G$ be a subgroup of the full automorphism group of $\mathcal D$. In this paper we prove that if $G$ acts flag-transitively, point-primitively on $\mathcal D$ and $Soc(G)= PSL(2,q)$, then D has parameters $(7, 3, 1)$, $(7, 4, 2)$, $(11, 5, 2)$, $(11, 6, 3)$ or $(15, 8, 4)$.
In this paper we consider connected locally $G$-arc-transitive graphs with vertices of valence 3 and 4, such that the kernel $G_{uv}^{[1]}$ of the action of an edge-stabiliser on the neighourhood $Γ(u) \cup Γ(v)$ is trivial. We find nineteen finitely presented groups with the property that any such group $G$ is a quotient of one of these groups. As an application, we enumerate all connected locally arc-transitive graphs of valence ${3,4}$ on at most 350 vertices whose automorphism group contains a locally arc-transitive subgroup $G$ with $G_{uv}^{[1]} = 1$.
Let $T$ be a locally finite tree all of whose vertices have valency at least $6$. We classify, up to isomorphism, the closed subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$ acting $2$-transitively on the set of ends of $T$ and whose local action at each vertex contains the alternating group. The outcome of the classification for a fixed tree $T$ is a countable family of groups, all containing two remarkable subgroups: a simple subgroup of index $\leq 8$ and (the semiregular analog of) the universal locally alternating group of Burger-Mozes (with possibly infinite index). We also provide an explicit example sho…
A cap in PG(r,q) is a set of points, no three of which are collinear. A cap is said to be transitive if its automorphism group in PGammaL(r+1,q) acts transtively on the cap, and co-transitive if the automorphism group acts transtively on the cap's complement in PG(r,q). Transitive, co-transitive caps are characterized as being one of: an elliptic quadric in PG(3,q); a Suzuki-Tits ovoid in PG(3,q); a hyperoval in PG(2,4); a cap of size 11 in PG(4,3); the complement of a hyperplane in PG(r,2); or a union of Singer orbits in PG(r,q) whose automorphism group comes from a subgroup of GammaL(1,q^{r+…
This paper presents a solution of the polycirculant conjecture which states that every vertex-transitive graph G has an automorphism that permutes the vertices in cycles of the same length. This is done by identifying vertex-transitive graphs as coset graphs. For a coset graph H, an equivalence relation $\sim$ is defined on the vertices of cosets with classes as double cosets of the stabiliser and any other proper subgroup A' of a transitive group A of G. Induced left translations of elements of the subgroup A' are semi-regular since they preserve these double cosets and acts regularly on each…
We construct sharply 2-transitive groups of characteristic 0 without non-trivial abelian normal subgroup. These groups act sharply 2-trnaisitvely by conjugation on their involutions. This answers a longstanding open question.
We investigate properties of finite transitive permutation groups $(G, Ω)$ in which all proper subgroups of $G$ act intransitively on $Ω.$ In particular, we are interested in reduction theorems for minimally transitive representations of solvable groups.
In this paper, we present a classification of $2$-designs with $\gcd(r,λ)=1$ admitting flag-transitive automorphism groups. If $G$ is a flag-transitive automorphism group of a non-trivial $2$-design $\mathcal{D}$ with $\gcd(r,λ)=1$, then either $(\mathcal{D},G)$ is one of the known examples described in this paper, or $\mathcal{D}$ has $q = p^{d}$ points with $p$ prime and $G$ is a subgroup of $AΓL_{1}(q)$.
A graph is vertex-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on vertices of the graph. A vertex-transitive graph is a Cayley graph if its automorphism group contains a subgroup acting regularly on its vertices. In this paper, the tetravalent vertex-transitive non-Cayley graphs of order $6p$ are classified for each prime $p$.
We prove the following result. Let q be a power of an odd prime and let Sp(2m,q) denote the symplectic group of degree 2m over F_q. Then if q=1 mod 4, no solvable subgroup of Sp(2m,q) acts transitively on a complete symplectic spread defined on the underlying vector space of dimension 2m, unless m=1 and q=5. The solvable group Sp(2,3) of order 24 acts transitively on a complete symplectic spread defined on a two-dimensional vector space over F_5. By contrast, when q=3 mod 4, there is a metacyclic group of order 2m(q^m+1) that acts transitively on a complete symplectic spread.
We show that a group acting on a non-trivial tree with finite edge stabilizers and icc vertex stabilizers admits a faithful and highly transitive action on an infinite countable set. This result is actually true for infinite vertex stabilizers and some more general, finite of infinite, edge stabilizers that we call highly core-free. We study the notion of highly core-free subgroups and give some examples. In the case of amalgamated free products over highly core-free subgroups and HNN extensions with highly core-free base groups we obtain a genericity result for faithful and highly transitive …
A permutation group is innately transitive if it has a transitive minimal normal subgroup, and this subgroup is called a plinth. In this paper we study three special types of inclusions of innately transitive permutation groups in wreath products in product action. This is achieved by studying the natural Cartesian decomposition of the underlying set that correspond to the product action of a wreath product. Previously we identified six classes of Cartesian decompositions that can be acted upon transitively by an innately transitive group with a non-abelian plinth. The inclusions studied in th…
Let $G$ be a group of collineations of a finite thick generalised quadrangle $Γ$. Suppose that $G$ acts primitively on the point set $\mathcal{P}$ of $Γ$, and transitively on the lines of $Γ$. We show that the primitive action of $G$ on $\mathcal{P}$ cannot be of holomorph simple or holomorph compound type. In joint work with Glasby, we have previously classified the examples $Γ$ for which the action of $G$ on $\mathcal{P}$ is of affine type. The problem of classifying generalised quadrangles with a point-primitive, line-transitive collineation group is therefore reduced to the case where ther…
