For a digraph $D=(V(D), A(D))$, and a set $S\subseteq V(D)$ with $r\in S$ and $|S|\geq 2$, an $(S, r)$-tree is an out-tree $T$ rooted at $r$ with $S\subseteq V(T)$. Two $(S, r)$-trees $T_1$ and $T_2$ are said to be arc-disjoint if $A(T_1)\cap A(T_2)=\emptyset$. Two arc-disjoint $(S, r)$-trees $T_1$ and $T_2$ are said to be internally disjoint if $V(T_1)\cap V(T_2)=S$. Let $κ_{S,r}(D)$ and $λ_{S,r}(D)$ be the maximum number of internally disjoint and arc-disjoint $(S, r)$-trees in $D$, respectively. The generalized $k$-vertex-strong connectivity of $D$ is defined as $$κ_k(D)= \min \{κ_{S,r}(D)\mid S\subset V(D), |S|=k, r\in S\}.$$ Similarly, the generalized $k$-arc-strong connectivity of $D$ is defined as $$λ_k(D)= \min \{λ_{S,r}(D)\mid S\subset V(D), |S|=k, r\in S\}.$$ The generalized $k$-vertex-strong connectivity and generalized $k$-arc-strong connectivity are also called directed tree connectivity which could be seen as a generalization of classical connectivity of digraphs.
A digraph $D=(V(D), A(D))$ is called minimally generalized $(k, \ell)$-vertex (respectively, arc)-strongly connected if $κ_k(D)\geq \ell$ (respectively, $λ_k(D)\geq \ell$) but for any arc $e\in A(D)$, $κ_k(D-e)\leq \ell-1$ (respectively, $λ_k(D-e)\leq \ell-1$). In this paper, we study the minimally generalized $(k, \ell)$-vertex (respectively, arc)-strongly connected digraphs. We compute the minimum and maximum sizes of these digraphs, and give characterizations of such digraphs for some pairs of $k$ and $\ell$.
The family of Directed Acyclic Graphs as well as some related graphs are analyzed with respect to extremal behavior in relation with the family of intersection graphs for families of boxes with transverse intersection.

The cyclic edge-connectivity of a graph $G$ is the least $k$ such that there exists a set of $k$ edges whose removal disconnects $G$ into components where every component contains a cycle. We show that for graphs of minimum degree at least 3 and girth $g$ at least 4, the cyclic edge-connectivity is bounded above by $(Δ-2)g$ where $Δ$ is the maximum degree. We then prove that if the second eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a $d$-regular graph of girth $g\geq4$ is sufficiently small, then the cyclic edge-connectivity is $(d-2)g$, providing a spectral condition for when this upper bound on cy…
In this paper we establish all extremal graphs with respect to augmented eccentric connectivity index among all (simple connected) graphs, among trees and among trees with perfect matching. For graphs that turn out to be extremal explicit formulas for the value of augmented eccentric connectivity index are derived.
Let $\overrightarrow{P_k}$ and $\overrightarrow{C_k}$ denote the directed path and the directed cycle of order $k$, respectively. In this paper, we determine the precise maximum size of $\overrightarrow{P_k}$-free digraphs of order $n$ as well as the extremal digraphs attaining the maximum size for large $n$. For all $n$, we also determine the precise maximum size of $\overrightarrow{C_k}$-free digraphs of order $n$ as well as the extremal digraphs attaining the maximum size. In addition, Huang and Lyu [\textit{Discrete Math. 343(5) 2020}] characterized the extremal digraphs avoiding an orient…

The atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index is a degree-based topological index. It was introduced due to its applications in modeling the properties of certain molecular structures and has been since extensively studied. In this note, we examine the influence on the extremal values of the ABC index by various graph parameters. More specifically, we consider the maximum ABC index of connected graphs of given order, with fixed independence number, number of pendent vertices, chromatic number and edge-connectivity respectively. We provide characterizations of extremal structures as well as some conje…
In this paper we define a class of combinatorial structures the instances of which can each be thought of as a model of directed hypergraphs in some way. Each of these models is uniform in that all edges have the same internal structure, and each is simple in that no loops or multiedges are allowed. We generalize the concepts of Turan density, blowup density, and jumps to this class and show that many basic extremal results extend naturally in this new setting. In particular, we show that supersaturation holds, the blowup of a generalized directed hypergraph (GDH) has the same Turan density as…
A path in a vertex-colored graph is called a \emph{vertex-monochromatic path} if its internal vertices have the same color. A vertex-coloring of a graph is a \emph{monochromatic vertex-connection coloring} (\emph{MVC-coloring} for short), if there is a vertex-monochromatic path joining any two vertices in the graph. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{monochromatic vertex-connection number}, denoted by $mvc(G)$, is defined to be the maximum number of colors used in an \emph{MVC-coloring} of $G$. These concepts of vertex-version are natural generalizations of the colorful monochromatic connect…
The concept of maximum local connectivity $\bar κ$ of a graph was introduced by Bollobás. One of the problems about it is to determine the largest number of edges $f(n;\barκ\leq \ell)$ for graphs of order $n$ that have local connectivity at most $\ell$. We consider a generalization of the above concept and problem. For $S\subseteq V(G)$ and $|S|\geq 2$, the \emph{generalized local connectivity} $κ(S)$ is the maximum number of internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ in $G$. The parameter $\barκ_k(G)=max\{κ(S)|S\subseteq V(G),|S|=k\}$ is called the \emph{maximum generalized local connectivity} …
For a symmetric bivariable function $f(x,y)$, let the {\it connectivity function} of a connected graph $G$ be $M_f(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}f(d(u),d(v))$, where $d(u)$ is the degree of vertex $u$. In this paper, we prove that for an escalating (de-escalating) function $f(x,y)$, there exists a BFS-graph with the maximum (minimum) connectivity function $M_f(G)$ among all graphs with a $c-$cyclic degree sequence $π=(d_1,d_2, \ldots, d_n)$ and $d_n=1$, and obtain the majorization theorem for connectivity function for unicyclic and bicyclic degree sequences. Moreover, some applications of graph invarian…
For a digraph $D=(V(D), A(D))$, and a set $S\subseteq V(D)$ with $r\in S$ and $|S|\geq 2$, a directed $(S, r)$-Steiner path or, simply, an $(S, r)$-path is a directed path $P$ started at $r$ with $S\subseteq V(P)$. Two $(S, r)$-paths are said to be arc-disjoint if they have no common arc. Two arc-disjoint $(S, r)$-paths are said to be internally disjoint if the set of common vertices of them is exactly $S$. Let $κ^p_{S,r}(D)$ (resp. $λ^p_{S,r}(D)$) be the maximum number of internally disjoint (resp. arc-disjoint) $(S, r)$-paths in $D$. The directed path $k$-connectivity of $D$ is defined as $$…
A conjecture by Lichiardopol states that for every $k \ge 1$ there exists an integer $g(k)$ such that every digraph of minimum out-degree at least $g(k)$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles of pairwise distinct lengths. Motivated by Lichiardopol's conjecture, we study the existence of vertex-disjoint directed cycles satisfying length constraints in digraphs of large connectivity or large minimum degree. Our main result is that for every $k \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists $s(k) \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every strongly $s(k)$-connected digraph contains $k$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles …

Boesch and Chen (SIAM J. Appl. Math., 1978) introduced the cut-version of the generalized edge-connectivity, named $k$-edge-connectivity. For any integer $k$ with $2\leq k\leq n$, the {\em $k$-edge-connectivity} of a graph $G$, denoted by $λ_k(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of edges whose removal from $G$ produces a graph with at least $k$ components. In this paper, we first compute some exact values and sharp bounds for $λ_k(G)$ in terms of $n$ and $k$. We then discuss the relationships between $λ_k(G)$ and other generalized connectivities. An algorithm in $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ time will…
Directed graphs are ubiquitous models for networks, and topological spaces they generate, such as the directed flag complex, have become useful objects in applied topology. The simplices are formed from directed cliques. We extend Atkin's theory of $q$-connectivity to the case of directed simplices. This results in a preorder where simplices are related by sequences of simplices that share a $q$-face with respect to directions specified by chosen face maps. We leverage the Alexandroff equivalence between preorders and topological spaces to introduce a new class of topological spaces for direct…
A particular case of Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture, says that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum out-degree at least $1/3n$ contains a directed cycle of length at most 3. Recently, Kral, Hladky and Norine proved that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum out-degree at least $0.3465n$ contains a directed cycle of length at most 3 (which currently is the best result). A weaker particular case says that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum semi-degree at least $1/3n$ contains a directed triangle. In a recent paper, by using the result of Kral et al, the author proved that for $β\geq 0.343545$, any …
We obtain the maximum sum-connectivity indices of graphs in the set of trees and in the set of unicyclic graphs respectively with given number of vertices and maximum degree, and determine the corresponding extremal graphs. Additionally, we deduce the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with the first two maximum sum-connectivity indices for $n\ge 4$.
The Randic (connectivity) index is one of the most successful molecular descriptors in structure-property and structure-activity relationships studies. J. Gao found the sharp upper bound for the Randic index of apex trees. In this paper, we proved that k-apex trees are not regular graphs for k\ge2 and proposed a sharp upper bound for the Randic index of k-apex trees for k>1.
The problem of determining the largest number $f(n;\barκ\leq \ell)$ of edges for graphs with $n$ vertices and maximal local connectivity at most $\ell$ was considered by Bollobás. Li et al. studied the largest number $f(n;\barκ_3\leq2)$ of edges for graphs with $n$ vertices and at most two internally disjoint Steiner trees connecting any three vertices. In this paper, we further study the largest number $f(n;\barκ_k=1)$ of edges for graphs with $n$ vertices and exactly one Steiner tree connecting any $k$ vertices with $k\geq 3$. It turns out that this is not an easy task to finish, not like th…
A group $G$ of permutations of a set $Ω$ is {\em primitive} if it acts transitively on $Ω$, and the only $G$-invariant equivalence relations on $Ω$ are the trivial and universal relations. A graph $Γ$ is {\em primitive} if its automorphism group acts primitively on its vertex set. A graph $Γ$ has {\em connectivity one} if it is connected and there exists a vertex $α$ of $Γ$, such that the induced graph $Γ\setminus \{α\}$ is not connected. If $Γ$ has connectivity one, a {\em block} of $Γ$ is a connected subgraph that is maximal subject to the condition that it does not have connectivity one. Th…
For an edge-colored graph $G$, we call an edge-cut $M$ of $G$ monochromatic if the edges of $M$ are colored with the same color. The graph $G$ is called monochromatic disconnected if any two distinct vertices of $G$ are separated by a monochromatic edge-cut. For a connected graph $G$, the monochromatic disconnection number (or $MD$-number for short) of $G$, denoted by $md(G)$, is the maximum number of colors that are allowed in order to make $G$ monochromatic disconnected. For graphs with diameter one, they are complete graphs and so their $MD$-numbers are $1$. For graphs with diameter at leas…
A long standing open problem in extremal graph theory is to describe all graphs that maximize the number of induced copies of a path on four vertices. The character of the problem changes in the setting of oriented graphs, and becomes more tractable. Here we resolve this problem in the setting of oriented graphs without transitive triangles.

For a directed graph, the Pagerank algorithm emulates a random walker on the graph that occasionally "jumps" to a random vertex based on a jumping parameter $α$. Upon completion, the algorithm generates a stochastic vector whose entries correspond to the limiting probability that the walker will be at that vertex. This vector is a right eigenvector of a corresponding Markov trasition matrix. Undoubtedly, this vector can drastically change based upon the jumping parameter $α$. In this article, we investigate the maximum possible discrepancy for different Pagerank vectors on the same unweighted …
Generalized connectivity introduced by Hager (1985) has been studied extensively in undirected graphs and become an established area in undirected graph theory. For connectivity problems, directed graphs can be considered as generalizations of undirected graphs. In this paper, we introduce a natural extension of generalized $k$-connectivity of undirected graphs to directed graphs (we call it strong subgraph $k$-connectivity) by replacing connectivity with strong connectivity. We prove NP-completeness results and the existence of polynomial algorithms. We show that strong subgraph $k$--connecti…
The general sum-connectivity index of a graph $G$ is defined as $χ_α(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)} {(d(u)+d(v))^α}$, where $d(v)$ denotes the degree of the vertex $v$ in $G$ and $α$ is a real number. In this paper it is deduced the maximum value for the general sum-connectivity index of $n$-vertex trees for $-1.7036\leq α<0$ and of $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs for $-1\le α<0$ respectively, with fixed maximum degree $\triangle $. The corresponding extremal graphs, as well as the $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the second maximum general sum-connectivity index for $n\ge 4$ are characterized. This …
Directed graphs are widely used in modelling of nonsymmetric relations in various sciences and engineering disciplines. We discuss invariants of strongly connected directed graphs - minimal number of vertices or edges necessary to remove to make remaining graphs not strongly connected. By analogy with undirected graphs these invariants are called strong vertex/edge connectivities. We review some properties of these invariants. Computational results for some publicly available connectome graphs used in neuroscience are described.
We consider the extremal values of the stationary distribution of sparse directed random graphs with given degree sequences and their relation to the extremal values of the in-degree sequence. The graphs are generated by the directed configuration model. Under the assumption of bounded $(2+η)$-moments on the in-degrees and of bounded out-degrees, we obtain tight comparisons between the maximum value of the stationary distribution and the maximum in-degree. Under the further assumption that the order statistics of the in-degrees have a power-law behavior, we show that the extremal values of the…
By generalizing a recent result of Hong, Liu, and Lai on characterizing the degree-sequences of simple strongly connected directed graphs, a characterization is provided for degree-sequences of simple $k$-node-connected digraphs. More generally, we solve the directed node-connectivity augmentation problem when the augmented digraph is degree-specified and simple. As for edge-connectivity augmentation, we solve the special case when the edge-connectivity is to be increased by one and the augmenting digraph must be simple.
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraphs without isolated vertices. A vertex-degree based invariant $I(D)$ related to a real function $φ$ of $D$ is defined as a summation over all arcs, $I(D) = \frac{1}{2}\sum_{uv\in A}{φ(d_u^+,d_v^-)}$, where $d_u^+$ (resp. $d_u^-$) denotes the out-degree (resp. in-degree) of a vertex $u$. In this paper, we give the extremal values and extremal digraphs of $I(D)$ over all digraphs with $n$ non-isolated vertices. Applying these results, we obtain the extremal values of some vertex-degree based topological indices of digraphs, such as the Randić index, the Zagreb index, the…
The generalized $k$-connectivity $κ_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ was introduced by Hager before 1985. As its a natural counterpart, we introduced the concept of generalized edge-connectivity $λ_k(G)$, recently. In this paper we summarize the known results on the generalized connectivity and generalized edge-connectivity. After an introductory section, the paper is then divided into nine sections: the generalized (edge-)connectivity of some graph classes, algorithms and computational complexity, sharp bounds of $κ_k(G)$ and $λ_k(G)$, graphs with large generalized (edge-)connectivity, Nordhaus-Gaddum-ty…
In this paper, we prove almost tight bounds on the size of sound monotone switching networks accepting permutations sets of directed trees. This roughly corresponds to proving almost tight bounds bounds on the monotone memory efficiency of the directed ST-connectivity problem for the special case in which the input graph is guaranteed to have no path from s to t or be isomorphic to a specific directed tree.
