Motivated by the subordinated Brownian motion, we define a new class of (in general discontinuous) random fields on higher-dimensional parameter domains: the subordinated Gaussian random field. We investigate the pointwise marginal distribution of the constructed random fields, derive a Lévy-Khinchin-type formula and semi-explicit formulas for the covariance function. Further, we study the pointwise stochastic regularity and validate our theoretical findings in various numerical examples.
We compute quantitative bounds for measuring the discrepancy between the distribution of two min-max statistics involving either pairs of Gaussian random matrices, or one Gaussian and one Gaussian-subordinated random matrix. In the fully Gaussian setup, our approach allows us to recover quantitative versions of well-known inequalities by Gordon (1985, 1987, 1992), thus generalising the quantitative version of the Sudakov-Fernique inequality deduced in Chatterjee (2005). On the other hand, the Gaussian-subordinated case yields generalizations of estimates by Chernozhukov et al. (2015) and Koike…
This paper considers the asymptotic behaviour of volumes of excursion sets of subordinated Gaussian random fields with (possibly) infinite variance. Actually, we consider integral functionals of such fields and obtain their limiting distribution using the Hermite expansion of the integrand. We consider the general non-stationary Gaussian random fields, including stationary and anisotropic special cases. The limiting random variables in our limit theorems have the form of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals. We illustrate most results with corresponding examples.
We consider Gaussian subordinated Lévy fields (GSLFs) that arise by subordinating Lévy processes with positive transformations of Gaussian random fields on some spatial domain $\mathcal{D}\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 1$. The resulting random fields are distributionally flexible and have in general discontinuous sample paths. Theoretical investigations of the random fields include pointwise distributions, possible approximations and their covariance function. As an application, a random elliptic PDE is considered, where the constructed random fields occur in the diffusion coefficient. Further,…
We develop a new method for showing that a given sequence of random variables verifies an appropriate law of the iterated logarithm. Our tools involve the use of general estimates on multidimensional Wasserstein distances, that are in turn based on recently developed inequalities involving Stein matrices and transport distances. Our main application consists in the proof of the exact law of the iterated logarithm for the Hermite variations of a fractional Brownian motion in the critical case.
We study the asymptotic behavior of wavelet coefficients of random processes with long memory. These processes may be stationary or not and are obtained as the output of non--linear filter with Gaussian input. The wavelet coefficients that appear in the limit are random, typically non--Gaussian and belong to a Wiener chaos. They can be interpreted as wavelet coefficients of a generalized self-similar process.
There are all kinds of weak dependence. For example, strong mixing. Short-range dependence (SRD) is also a form of weak dependence. It occurs in the context of processes that are subordinated to the Gaussian. Is a SRD process strong mixing if the underlying Gaussian process is long-range dependent? We show that this is not necessarily the case.
We study the weak convergence (in the high-frequency limit) of the frequency components associated with Gaussian-subordinated, spherical and isotropic random fields. In particular, we provide conditions for asymptotic Gaussianity and we establish a new connection with random walks on the the dual of SO(3), which mirrors analogous results previously established for fields defined on Abelian groups (see Marinucci and Peccati (2007)). Our work is motivated by applications to cosmological data analysis, and specifically by the probabilistic modelling and the statistical analysis of the Cosmic Micr…
In this article, we show that a general class of weakly stationary time series can be modeled applying Gaussian subordinated processes. We show that, for any given weakly stationary time series $(z_t)_{z\in\mathbb{N}}$ with given equal one-dimensional marginal distribution, one can always construct a function $f$ and a Gaussian process $(X_t)_{t\in\mathbb{N}}$ such that $\left(f(X_t)\right)_{t\in\mathbb{N}}$ has the same marginal distributions and, asymptotically, the same autocovariance function as $(z_t)_{t\in\mathbb{N}}$. Consequently, we obtain asymptotic distributions for the mean and aut…
We study massive (reccurent) sets with respect to a certain random walk $S_α$ defined on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z} ^d$, $d=1,2$. Our random walk $S_α$ is obtained from the simple random walk $S$ on $\mathbb{Z} ^d$ by the procedure of discrete subordination. $S_α$ can be regarded as a discrete space and time counterpart of the symmetric $α$-stable Lévy process in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In the case $d=1$ we show that some remarkable proper subsets of $\mathbb{Z}$ , e.g. the set $\mathcal{P}$ of primes, are massive whereas some proper subsets of $\mathcal{P}$ such as Leitmann primes $\mathcal{P}_h…
A reduction theorem is proved for functionals of Gamma-correlated random fields with long-range dependence in d-dimensional space. In the particular case of a non-linear function of a chi-squared random field with Laguerre rank equal to one, we apply the Karhunen-Loéve expansion and the Fredholm determinant formula to obtain the characteristic function of its Rosenblatt-type limit distribution. When the Laguerre rank equals one and two, we obtain the multiple Wiener-Itô stochastic integral representation of the limit distribution. In both cases, an infinite series representation in terms of in…
To model subsurface flow in uncertain heterogeneous\ fractured media an elliptic equation with a discontinuous stochastic diffusion coefficient - also called random field - may be used. In case of a one-dimensional parameter space, Lévy processes allow for jumps and display great flexibility in the distributions used. However, in various situations (e.g. microstructure modeling), a one-dimensional parameter space is not sufficient. Classical extensions of Lévy processes on two parameter dimensions suffer from the fact that they do not allow for spatial discontinuities. In this paper a new subo…
This paper considers the class of Lévy processes that can be written as a Brownian motion time changed by an independent Lévy subordinator. Examples in this class include the variance gamma model, the normal inverse Gaussian model, and other processes popular in financial modeling. The question addressed is the precise relation between the standard first passage time and an alternative notion, which we call first passage of the second kind, as suggested by Hurd (2007) and others. We are able to prove that standard first passage time is the almost sure limit of iterations of first passage of th…
Let T* be a random field indexed by an Abelian compact group G, and suppose that T* has the form T* = F(T(g)), where T is Gaussian and isotropic. The aim of this paper is to establish high-frequency central limit theorems for the Fourier coefficients associated to T*. The proofs of our main results involve recently established criteria for the weak convergence of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals. Our research is motivated by physical applications, mainly related to the probabilistic modelization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation. In this connection, the case of the n-dimensional torus …
We prove infinite-dimensional second order Poincaré inequalities on Wiener space, thus closing a circle of ideas linking limit theorems for functionals of Gaussian fields, Stein's method and Malliavin calculus. We provide two applications: (i) to a new "second order" characterization of CLTs on a fixed Wiener chaos, and (ii) to linear functionals of Gaussian-subordinated fields.
Let $(G(X_j))_{j\geq1}$ be a multivariate subordinated Gaussian process, which exhibits long-range dependence. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding sequential empirical process under two different types of subordination. The limiting process is either a product of a deterministic function and a Hermite process as in the one-dimensional case or a sum of various processes of this kind.
We introduce a definition of long range dependence of random processes and fields on an (unbounded) index space $T\subseteq \R^d$ in terms of integrability of the covariance of indicators that a random function exceeds any given level. This definition is particularly designed to cover the case of random functions with infinite variance. We show the value of this new definition and its connection to limit theorems on some examples including subordinated Gaussian as well as random volatility fields and time series.
We combine Stein's method with Malliavin calculus in order to obtain explicit bounds in the multidimensional normal approximation (in the Wasserstein distance) of functionals of Gaussian fields. Our results generalize and refine the main findings by Peccati and Tudor (2005), Nualart and Ortiz-Latorre (2007), Peccati (2007) and Nourdin and Peccati (2007b, 2008); in particular, they apply to approximations by means of Gaussian vectors with an arbitrary, positive definite covariance matrix. Among several examples, we provide an application to a functional version of the Breuer-Major CLT for field…
Assume that $g(|ξ|^2)$, $ξ\in\mathbb{R}^k$, is for every dimension $k\in\mathbb{N}$ the characteristic function of an infinitely divisible random variable $X^k$. By a classical result of Schoenberg $f:=-\log g$ is a Bernstein function. We give a simple probabilistic proof of this result starting from the observation that $X^k = X_1^k$ can be embedded into a Lévy process $(X_t^k)_{t\geq 0}$ and that Schoenberg's theorem says that $(X_t^k)_{t\geq 0}$ is subordinate to a Brownian motion. A key ingredient of our proof are concrete formulae which connect the transition densities, resp., Lévy measur…
We combine Malliavin calculus with Stein's method, in order to derive explicit bounds in the Gaussian and Gamma approximations of random variables in a fixed Wiener chaos of a general Gaussian process. We also prove results concerning random variables admitting a possibly infinite Wiener chaotic decomposition. Our approach generalizes, refines and unifies the central and non-central limit theorems for multiple Wiener-Itô integrals recently proved (in several papers, from 2005 to 2007) by Nourdin, Nualart, Ortiz-Latorre, Peccati and Tudor. We apply our techniques to prove Berry-Esséen bounds in…
Let $u(t,\mathbf{x}),\ t>0,\ \mathbf{x}\in \mathbb{R}^{n},$ be the spatial-temporal random field arising from the solution of a relativistic diffusion equation with the spatial-fractional parameter $α\in (0,2)$ and the mass parameter $\mathfrak{m}> 0$, subject to a random initial condition $u(0,\mathbf{x})$ which is characterized as a subordinated Gaussian field. In this article, we study the large-scale and the small-scale limits for the suitable space-time re-scalings of the solution field $u(t,\mathbf{x})$. Both the Gaussian and the non-Gaussian limit theorems are discussed. The small-scale…
A multifractal random walk (MRW) is defined by a Brownian motion subordinated by a class of continuous multifractal random measures $M[0,t], 0\le t\le1$. In this paper we obtain an extension of this process, referred to as multifractal fractional random walk (MFRW), by considering the limit in distribution of a sequence of conditionally Gaussian processes. These conditional processes are defined as integrals with respect to fractional Brownian motion and convergence is seen to hold under certain conditions relating the self-similarity (Hurst) exponent of the fBm to the parameters defining the …
We prove Central Limit Theorems and Stein-like bounds for the asymptotic behaviour of nonlinear functionals of spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions. Our investigation combine asymptotic analysis of higher order moments for Legendre polynomials and, in addition, recent results on Malliavin calculus and Total Variation bounds for Gaussian subordinated fields. We discuss application to geometric functionals like the Defect and invariant statistics, e.g. polyspectra of isotropic spherical random fields. Both of these have relevance for applications, especially in an astrophysical environment.
We construct a family of random matrix models for the q-deformed Gaussian random variables G_μ=a_μ+a^\star_μwhere the annihilation operators a_μand creation operators a^\star_νfulfil the q-deformed commutation relation a_μa^\star_ν-q a^\star_νa_μ=Γ_{μν}, Γ_{μν} is the covariance and 0<q<1 is a given number. Important feature of considered random matrices is that the joint distribution of their entries is Gaussian.
We obtain a representation theorem for Banach space valued Gaussian random variables as integrals against a white noise. As a corollary we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a white noise representation for a Gaussian random field indexed by a compact measure space. As an application we show how existing theory for integration with respect to Gaussian processes indexed by $[0,1]$ can be extended to Gaussian fields indexed by compact measure spaces.
In this paper, for centered homogeneous Gaussian random fields the joint limiting distributions of normalized maxima and minima over continuous time and uniform grids are investigated. It is shown that maxima and minima are asymptotic dependent for strongly dependent homogeneous Gaussian random field with the choice of sparse grid, Pickands' grid or dense grid, while for the weakly dependent Gaussian random field maxima and minima are asymptotically independent.
We find sufficient conditions for the existence of an exact uniform modulus continuity for the class of $q$-isotropic Gaussian random fields introduced in [8]. We apply the result to a $d$-dimensional version of the $B^γ$ Gaussian processes defined in [14].
We find the exponential exact two-terms non-asymptotic expression for the maximum and minimum distribution of a non-Gaussian, in general case, random vector.
We study how well moments of sums of independent symmetric random variables with logarithmically concave tails may be approximated by moments of Gaussian random variables.
We prove a full large deviations principle in large time, for a diffusion process with random drift V, which is a centered Gaussian shear flow random field. The large deviations principle is established in a ``quenched'' setting, i.e. is valid almost surely in the randomness of V.
We consider a set of one-dimensional transformations of Gaussian random functions. Under natural assumptions we obtain a connection between $L_2$-small ball asymptotics of the transformed function and of the original one. Also the explicit Karhunen -- Loéve expansion is obtained for a proper class of Gaussian processes.
The probability of the small deviations of the matrix $AA^T$ determinant is estimated, where $A$ is an $n\times\infty$ random matrix with centered entries having joint Gaussian distribution. The inequality obtained is sharp in a sence.
The explicit formulae for the height distribution and expected number of local maxima have been obtained for isotropic Gaussian random fields on certain low-dimensional Euclidean space or low-dimensional spheres.
This paper is concerned with the smoothness (in the sense of Meyer-Watanabe) of the local times of Gaussian random fields. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence and smoothness of the local times, collision local times, and self-intersection local times are established for a large class of Gaussian random fields, including fractional Brownian motions, fractional Brownian sheets and solutions of stochastic heat equations driven by space-time Gaussian noise.
This paper is concerned with the existence of multiple points of Gaussian random fields. Under the framework of Dalang et al. (2017), we prove that, for a wide class of Gaussian random fields, multiple points do not exist in critical dimensions. The result is applicable to fractional Brownian sheets and the solutions of systems of stochastic heat and wave equations.
We deduce bilateral interrelations between Fourier coefficients for lacunar trigonometric series and modulus of their continuity. We obtain also as an application some conditions for continuity and discontinuity for Gaussian periodic stationary random centered processes.
In this short note we address a gaussian property of normal vectors in random non-Hermitian matrices. The approach uses a simple geometric and comparison technique.
We obtain a Bernstein type Gaussian concentration inequality for martingales. Our inequality improves the Azuma-Hoeffding inequality for moderate deviations $x$. Following the work of McDiarmid (1989), Talagrand (1996) and Boucheron, Lugosi and Massart (2000,2003), we show that our result can be applied to the concentration of random functions, Erdös-Rényi random graph, and maxima of empirical processes. Several interesting Gaussian concentration inequalities have been obtained.
We consider a random matrix whose entries are independent Gaussian variables taking values in the field of quaternions with variance $1/n$. Using logarithmic potential theory, we prove the almost sure convergence, as the dimension $n$ goes to infinity, of the empirical distribution of the right eigenvalues towards some measure supported on the unit ball of the quaternions field. Some comments on more general Gaussian quaternionic random matrix models are also made.
In this short note, we give a very simple but useful generalization of a result of Vershynin (Theorem 5.39 of [1]) for a random matrix with independent sub-Gaussian rows. We also explain with an example where our generalization is useful.
We prove a sharp moment inequality for a log-concave or a log-convex function, on Gaussian random vectors. As an application we take a stability result for the classical logarithmic Sobolev inequality of L. Gross in the case where the function is log-concave.
We have obtained some upper bounds for the probability distribution of extremes of a self-similar Gaussian random field with stationary rectangular increments that are defined on the compact spaces. The probability distributions of extremes for the normalized self-similar Gaussian random fields with stationary rectangular increments defined in ${\mathbb{R}}^2_+$ have been presented. In our work we have used the techniques developed for the self-similar fields and based on the classical series analysis of the maximal probability bounding from below for the Gaussian fields.
Gaussian random fields on Euclidean spaces whose variances reach their maximum values at unique points are considered. Exact asymptotic behaviors of probabilities of large absolute maximum of theirs trajectories have been evaluated using Double Sum Method under the widest possible conditions.
We introduce a new approach to the spectral equivalence of Gaussian processes and fields, based on the methods of operator theory in Hilbert space. Besides several new results including identities in law of quadratic norms for integrated and multiply integrated Gaussian random functions we give an application to goodness-of-fit testing.
This paper investigates an upper bound of the operator norm for sub-Gaussian tailed random matrices. A lot of attention has been put on uniformly bounded sub-Gaussian tailed random matrices with independent coefficients. However, little has been done for sub-Gaussian tailed random matrices whose matrix coefficients variance are not equal or for matrix for which coefficients are not independent. This is precisely the subject of this paper. After proving that random matrices with uniform sub-Gaussian tailed independent coefficients satisfy the Tracy Widom bound, that is, their matrix operator no…
This paper present a construction and the analysis of a class of non-Gaussian positive-definite matrix-valued homogeneous random fields with uncertain spectral measure for stochastic elliptic operators. Then the stochastic elliptic boundary value problem in a bounded domain of the 3D-space is introduced and analyzed for stochastic homogenization.
We study distributions of random vectors whose components are second order polynomials in Gaussian random variables. Assuming that the law of such a vector is not absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure, we derive some interesting consequences. Our second result gives a characterization of limits in law for sequences of such vectors.
We construct a coupling between the random walk composed of Lévy area increments from a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and a random walk composed of quadratic polynomials of Gaussian random variables. This coupling construction is used to produce a new pathwise approximation scheme for stochastic differential equations in the preprint [Flint-Lyons-2015]. The coupling arguments of the present paper are based extensively on the recent coupling results of Davie concerning a multidimensional variant of the Komlós-Major-Tusnády theorem and Wasserstein estimates for polynomial perturbations of Gaus…
This paper studies the problem of equivalence of Gaussian measures induced by Gaussian random fields (GRFs) with stationary increments and proves a sufficient condition for the equivalence in terms of the behavior of the spectral measures at infinity. The main results extend those of Stein (2004), Van Zanten (2007, 2008) and are applicable to a rich family of nonstationary space-time models with possible anisotropy behavior.
We construct a tree-based dependence structure for the representation of binomial, Poisson and Gaussian random vectors having a given covariance matrix, using sums of independent random variables. This construction allows us to characterize the supermodular ordering of such random vectors via the componentwise ordering of their covariance matrices. Our method relies on the representation of dependent components using binary trees on the discrete $d$-dimensional hypercube $C_d$, and on Möbius inversion techniques. In the case of Poisson random vectors this approach involves Lévy measures on $C_…
In a recent paper, Michalowicz et al. provide an extension of Isserlis theorem to the case of a Bernoulli location mixture of a Gaussian vector. We extend here this result to the case of any location mixture of Gaussian vector; we also provide an example of the Isserlis theorem for a "scale location" mixture of Gaussian, namely the d-dimensional generalized hyperbolic distribution.
We study the sample paths properties of Operator scaling Gaussian random fields. Such fields are anisotropic generalizations of anisotropic self-similar random fields as anisotropic Fractional Brownian Motion. Some characteristic properties of the anisotropy are revealed by the regularity of the sample paths. The sharpest way of measuring smoothness is related to these anisotropies and thus to the geometry of these fields.
We study when a given Gaussian random variable on a given probability space $(Ω, {\cal{F}}, P) $ is equal almost surely to $β_{1}$ where $β$ is a Brownian motion defined on the same (or possibly extended) probability space. As a consequences of this result, we prove that the distribution of a random variable (satisfying in addition a certain property) in a finite sum of Wiener chaoses cannot be normal. This result also allows to understand better some characterization of the Gaussian variables obtained via Malliavin calculus.
We study the regularity of densities of distributions that are polynomial images of the standard Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We assume that the degree of a polynomial is fixed and that each variable enters to a power bounded by another fixed number.
Let $X= \{X(t), t \in \mathbb R^N\}$ be a centered Gaussian random field with values in $\mathbb R^d$ satisfying certain conditions and let $F \subset \mathbb R^d$ be a Borel set. In our main theorem, we provide a sufficient condition for $F$ to be polar for $X$, i.e. $\mathbb P \big( X(t) \in F \hbox{ for some } t \in \mathbb R^N \big) = 0$, which improves significantly the main result in Dalang et al [7], where the case of $F$ being a singleton was considered. We provide a variety of examples of Gaussian random field for which our result is applicable. Moreover, by using our main theorem, we…
The paper characterizes uniform convergence rate for general classes of wavelet expansions of stationary Gaussian random processes. The convergence in probability is considered.
In this paper, by using the exact tail asymptotics derived by Debicki, Hashorva and Ji (Ann. Probab. 2014), we proved the Gumbel limit theorem for the maximum of a class of non-homogeneous Gaussian random fields. By using the obtained results, we also derived the Gumbel laws for Shepp statistics of fractional Brownian motion and Gaussian integrated process as well as the Gumbel law for Storage process with fractional Brownian motion as input.
