We show that the Euler system of gas dynamics in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$, with positive far field density and arbitrary far field entropy, admits infinitely many steady solutions with compactly supported velocity. The same proof yields a similar result for the incompressible Euler system with variable density. In particular, these are examples of global in time smooth (non-trivial) solutions for the corresponding time-dependent systems.
In this paper we study the uniqueness property of solutions to the steady incompressible Euler equations with perturbations in $\Bbb R^N$. Our perturbations include as special cases the Euler equations with a `single signed' nonlinear term, the self-similar Euler equations, and the steady Navier-Stokes equations. For these equations show that suitable decay assumptions at infinity on the solution or its derivatives, imposed by the $L^q$ conditions imply that the only possible solution is zero.
We prove shock formation for 3D Euler-Poisson system for electron fluid plasma. The shock solution we construct is of large initial data, also compactly supported during the lifespan. In addition, the blowup time and location can be computed explicitly.
In this paper, we study desingularization of steady solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equation with helical symmetry in a general helical domain. We construct a family of steady Euler flows with helical symmetry, such that the associated vorticities tend asymptotically to a helical vortex filament. The solutions are obtained by solving a semilinear elliptic problem in divergence form with a parameter. By using the stream-function method, we show the existence and asymptotic behavior of ground state solutions concentrating near a single point as the parameter $ \varepsilon\to 0 $. Qualitativ…
We describe a method to construct smooth and compactly supported solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equations and related models. The method is based on localizable Grad-Shafranov equations and is inspired by the recent result \cite{gav}.
In this article we establish the validity of Prandtl layer expansions around Euler flows which are not shear. The presence of non-shear flows at the leading order creates a singularity of $o(\frac{1}{\sqrtε})$. A new $y$-weighted positivity estimate is developed to control this leading-order growth at the far field.
We consider solutions to the full (non-isentropic) two-dimensional Euler equations that are constant in time and along rays emanating from the origin. We prove that for a polytropic equation of state, entropy admissible solutions in $L^\infty$ with non-vanishing velocity, density, and internal energy must be $BV$. Moreover, we obtain some results concerning the structure of such solutions.
This paper is devoted to the study of nonlinear stability of steady incompressible Euler flows in two dimensions. We prove that a steady Euler flow is nonlinearly stable in $L^p$ norm of the vorticity if its stream function is a semistable solution of some semilinear elliptic problem with strictly increasing nonlinearity. The idea of the proof is to show that such a flow has strict local maximum energy among flows whose vorticities are rearrangements of a given function, with the help of an improvement version of Wolansky and Ghil's stability theorem. The result can be regarded as an extension…
We prove global in time dynamical stability of steady transonic shock solutions in divergent quasi-one-dimensional nozzles. We assume neither the smallness of the relative slope of the nozzle nor the weakness of the shock. Key ingredients of the proof are an exponentially decaying energy estimate for a linearized problem together with methods from \cite{LRXX}.
We establish the local uniqueness of steady transonic shock solutions with spherical symmetry for the three-dimensional full Euler equations. These transonic shock-fronts are important for understanding transonic shock phenomena in divergent nozzles. From mathematical point of view, we show the uniqueness of solutions of a free boundary problem for a multidimensional quasilinear system of mixed-composite elliptic--hyperbolic type. To this end, we develop a decomposition of the Euler system which works in a general Riemannian manifold, a method to study a Venttsel problem of nonclassical nonloc…
A compactness framework is established for approximate solutions to subsonic-sonic flows governed by the steady full Euler equations for compressible fluids in arbitrary dimension. The existing compactness frameworks for the two-dimensional irrotational case do not directly apply for the steady full Euler equations in higher dimensions. The new compactness framework we develop applies for both non-homentropic and rotational flows. One of our main observations is that the compactness can be achieved by using only natural weak estimates for the mass balance and the vorticity, along with the Bern…
In this paper, we consider steady Euler flows in a planar bounded domain in which the vorticity is sharply concentrated in a finite number of disjoint regions of small diameter. Such flows are closely related to the point vortex model and can be regarded as desingularization of point vortices. By an adaption of the vorticity method, we construct a family of steady Euler flows in which the vorticity is concentrated near a global minimum point of the Robin function of the domain, and the corresponding stream function satisfies a semilinear elliptic equation with a given profile function. Further…
It is well known that the incompressible Euler equations can be formulated in a very geometric language. The geometric structures provide very valuable insights into the properties of the solutions. Analogies with the finite-dimensional model of geodesics on a Lie group with left-invariant metric can be very instructive, but it is often difficult to prove analogues of finite-dimensional results in the infinite-dimensional setting of Euler's equations. In this paper we establish a result in this direction in the simple case of steady-state solutions in two dimensions, under some non-degeneracy …
In this paper, we study the global existence of steady subsonic Euler flows through infinitely long nozzles which are periodic in $x_1$ direction with the period $L$. It is shown that when the variation of Bernoulli function at some given section is small and mass flux is in a suitable regime, there exists a unique global subsonic flow in the nozzle. Furthermore, the flow is also periodic in $x_1$ direction with the period $L$. If, in particular, the Bernoulli function is a constant, we also get the existence of subsonic-sonic flows when the mass flux takes the critical value.
In this paper, we consider the steady irrotational Euler flows in multidimensional nozzles. The first rigorous proof on the existence and uniqueness of the incompressible flow is provided. Then, we justify the corresponding low Mach number limit, which is the first result of the low Mach number limit on the steady Euler flows. We establish several uniform estimates, which does not depend on the Mach number, to validate the convergence of the compressible flow with extra force to the corresponding incompressible flow, which is free from the extra force effect, as the Mach number goes to zero. T…

In this paper, we study nonlinear desingularization of steady vortex rings of three-dimensional incompressible Euler flows. We construct a family of steady vortex rings (with and without swirl) which constitutes a desingularization of the classical circular vortex filament in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The construction is based on a study of solutions to the similinear elliptic problem \begin{equation*} -\frac{1}{r}\frac{\partial}{\partial r}\Big(\frac{1}{r}\frac{\partialψ^\varepsilon}{\partial r}\Big)-\frac{1}{r^2}\frac{\partial^2ψ^\varepsilon}{\partial z^2}=\frac{1}{\varepsilon^2}\left(g(ψ^\varepsilon)…
In this paper, we study the global existence of steady subsonic Euler flows through infinitely long nozzles without the assumption of irrotationality. It is shown that when the variation of Bernoulli's function in the upstream is sufficiently small and mass flux is in a suitable regime with an upper critical value, then there exists a unique global subsonic solution in a suitable class for a general variable nozzle. One of the main difficulties for the general steady Euler flows, the governing equations are a mixed elliptic-hyperbolic system even for uniformly subsonic flows. A key point in ou…
This paper focuses on the structure of classical sonic-supersonic solutions near sonic curves for the two-dimensional full Euler equations in gas dynamics. In order to deal with the parabolic degeneracy near the sonic curve, a novel set of dependent and independent variables are introduced to transform the Euler equations into a new system of governing equations which displays a clear regularity-singularity structure. With the help of technical characteristic decompositions, the existence of a local smooth solution for the new system is first established in a weighted metric space by using the…
Incompressible Euler flows in narrow domains, in which the horizontal length scale is much larger than other scales, play an important role in applications, and their leading-order behavior can be described by the hydrostatic Euler equations. In this paper, we show that steady solutions of the hydrostatic Euler equations in an infinite strip strictly away from stagnation must be shear flows. Furthermore, we prove the existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of global steady solutions to the hydrostatic Euler equations in general nozzles. In terms of stream function formulation, the hydro…
In this paper, we are concerned with the structural stability of some steady subsonic solutions for Euler-Poisson system. A steady subsonic solution with subsonic background charge is proven to be structurally stable with respect to small perturbations of the background charge, the incoming flow angles, the normal electric field and the Bernoulli's function at the inlet and the end pressure at the exit, provided the background solution has a low Mach number and a small electric field. Following the idea developed in [19], we give a new formulation for Euler-Poisson equations, which employ the …
For a two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flow past a convex cornered wall with right angle, a characteristic discontinuity (vortex sheet and/or entropy wave) is generated, which separates the supersonic flow from the gas at rest (hence subsonic). We proved that such a transonic characteristic discontinuity is structurally stable under small perturbations of the upstream supersonic flow in $BV$. The existence of a weak entropy solution and Lipschitz continuous free boundary (i.e. characteristic discontinuity) is established. To achieve this, the problem is formulated as a free boundary pro…
In this paper, we study the existence and uniqueness of three dimensional steady Euler flows in rectangular nozzles when prescribing normal component of momentum at both the entrance and exit. If, in addition, the normal component of the voriticity and the variation of Bernoulli's function at the exit are both zero, then there exists a unique subsonic potential flow when the magnitude of the normal component of the momentum is less than a critical number. As the magnitude of the normal component of the momentum approaches the critical number, the associated flows converge to a subsonic-sonic f…

We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and reta…
This paper concerns with the existence of transonic shocks for steady Euler flows in a 3-D axisymmetric cylindrical nozzle, which are governed by the Euler equations with the slip boundary condition on the wall of the nozzle and a receiver pressure at the exit. Mathematically, it can be formulated as a free boundary problem with the shock front being the free boundary to be determined. In dealing with the free boundary problem, one of the key points is determining the position of the shock front. To this end, a free boundary problem for the linearized Euler system will be proposed, whose solut…
In this paper, we study two-dimensional steady incompressible Euler flows in which the vorticity is sharply concentrated in a finite number of regions of small diameter in a bounded domain. Mathematical analysis of such flows is an interesting and physically important research topic in fluid mechanics. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that in such flows the locations of these concentrated blobs of vorticity must be in the vicinity of some critical point of the Kirchhoff-Routh function, which is determined by the geometry of the domain. The vorticity is assumed to be only in $L^{4/3},…
Supersonic-sonic patches are ubiquitous in regions of transonic flows and they boil down to a family of degenerate hyperbolic problems in regions surrounded by a streamline, a characteristic curve and a possible sonic curve. This paper establishes the global existence of solutions in a whole supersonic-sonic patch characterized by the two-dimensional full system of steady Euler equations and studies solution behaviors near sonic curves, depending on the proper choice of boundary data extracted from the airfoil problem and related contexts. New characteristic decompositions are developed for th…
In this paper, we prove the existence and stability of subsonic flows for steady full Euler-Poisson system in a two dimensional nozzle of finite length when imposing the electric potential difference on non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the entrance, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler-Poisson system for subsonic flow is a hyperbolic-elliptic coupled nonlinear system. One of the crucial ingredient of this work is the combination of Helmholtz decomposition for the velocity field and stream function formulation together. In terms of the Helmholtz decompos…

We study supersonic flow past a convex corner which is surrounded by quiescent gas. When the pressure of the upstream supersonic flow is larger than that of the quiescent gas, there appears a strong rarefaction wave to rarefy the supersonic gas. Meanwhile, a transonic characteristic discontinuity appears to separate the supersonic flow behind the rarefaction wave from the static gas. In this paper, we employ a wave front tracking method to establish structural stability of such a flow pattern under non-smooth perturbations of the upcoming supersonic flow. It is an initial-value/free-boundary p…
We are concerned with the global existence of entropy solutions of the two-dimensional steady Euler equations for an ideal gas, which undergoes a one-step exothermic chemical reaction under the Arrhenius-type kinetics. The reaction rate function $ϕ(T)$ is assumed to have a positive lower bound. We first consider the Cauchy problem (the initial value problem), that is, seek a supersonic downstream reacting flow when the incoming flow is supersonic, and establish the global existence of entropy solutions when the total variation of the initial data is sufficiently small. Then we analyze the prob…
In this paper, we prove propagation of chaos in the context of wave turbulence for a generic quasisolution. We then apply the result to full solutions to the incompressible Euler equation.
We consider concentrated vorticities for the Euler equation on a smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbf{R}^2$ in the form of \[ ω= \sum_{j=1}^N ω_j χ_{Ω_j}, \quad |Ω_j| = πr_j^2, \quad \int_{Ω_j} ω_j dμ=μ_j \ne 0, \] supported on well-separated vortical domains $Ω_j$, $j=1, \ldots, N$, of small diameters $O(r_j)$. A conformal mapping framework is set up to study this free boundary problem with $Ω_j$ being part of unknowns. For any given vorticities $μ_1, \ldots, μ_N$ and small $r_1, \ldots, r_N\in \mathbf{R}^+$, through a perturbation approach, we obtain such piecewise constant steady vortex patches …
In this paper, we study the stability of supersonic contact discontinuity for the two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows in a finitely long nozzle of varying cross-sections. We formulate the problem as an initial-boundary value problem with the contact discontinuity as a free boundary. To deal with the free boundary value problem, we employ the Lagrangian transformation to straighten the contact discontinuity and then the free boundary value problem becomes a fixed boundary value problem. We develop an iteration scheme and establish some novel estimates of solutions for the first orde…
