We study the problem of the instability of inhomogeneous radiation universes in quadratic lagrangian theories of gravity written as a system of evolution equations with constraints. We construct formal series expansions and show that the resulting solutions have a smaller number of arbitrary functions than that required in a general solution. These results continue to hold for more general polynomial extensions of general relativity.
In this paper, we study the GUP (Generalized Uncertainty Principle) modified Hawking radiation of rotating polytropic black hole given in the Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. To this end, the GUP modified Klein-Gordon equation is applied for investigating the quantum tunneling of scalar particles from the polytropic black hole. After reducing the obtained radial wave equation to the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation, we derive the reflection and transmission probabilities of the radiation. A detail discussion on how the reflection and transmission (greybody factor) probabilities are derived for…
Gravitational instability in classical Jeans theory, General Relativity, and modified gravity is considered. The background density increase leads to a faster growth of perturbations in comparison with the standard theory. The transition to the Newtonian gauge in the case of coordinate dependent background metric functions is studied. For modified gravity a new high frequency stable solution is found.
We show that gravitational radiation drives an instability in hot young rapidly rotating neutron stars. This instability occurs primarily in the l=2 r-mode and will carry away most of the angular momentum of a rapidly rotating star by gravitational radiation. On the timescale needed to cool a young neutron star to about T=10^9 K (about one year) this instability can reduce the rotation rate of a rapidly rotating star to about 0.076Ω_K, where Ω_K is the Keplerian angular velocity where mass shedding occurs. In older colder neutron stars this instability is suppressed by viscous effects, allowin…
Recently, Banerjee and Kulkarni (R. Banerjee, S. Kulkarni, arXiv:0707.2449 [hep-th]) suggested that it is conceptually clean and economical to use only the covariant anomaly to derive Hawking radiation from a black hole. Based upon this simplified formalism, we apply the covariant anomaly cancellation method to investigate Hawking radiation from a modified Schwarzschild black hole in the theory of rainbow gravity. Hawking temperature of the gravity's rainbow black hole is derived from the energy-momentum flux by requiring it to cancel the covariant gravitational anomaly at the horizon. We stre…
In this paper, by applying the deformed dispersion relation in quantum gravity theory, we study the correction of fermions' tunneling radiation from non-stationary symmetric black holes. Firstly, the motion equation of fermions is modified in the gravitational spacetime. Based on the motion equation, the modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation has been obtained by a semiclassical approximation method. Then, the tunneling behavior of fermions at the event horizon of non-stationary symmetric Kerr black hole is investigated. Finally, the results show that in the non-stationary symmetric background, the…
The Ostrogradsky instability of higher derivative Lagrangians is derived from first principles using Control theory and Lyapunov Stability Analysis. This result is then used to argue that Born-Infeld Lagrangians are viable modifications of the Einstein-Hilbert action provided the action is varied in accordance with the Palatini formalism, in contrast to the metric formalism. Finally, the Born-Infeld version of the FRW equations are derived and the cosmological dynamics is studied for matter dominated closed and open universes, and the results are compared with the usual cosmology.
The Dolgov-Kawasaki instability discovered in the matter sector of the modified gravity scenario incorporating a 1/R correction to Einstein gravity is studied in general f(R) theories. A stability condition is found in the metric version of these theories to help ruling out models that are unviable from the theoretical point of view.
We consider a simple model for a black-hole laser: a Bose-Einstein condensate with uniform speed of sound and partially uniform flow, establishing two horizons, a black-hole and a white-hole horizon. Waves confined between the horizons are amplified similar to radiation in a laser cavity. Black-hole lasing appears as an instability with discrete sets of modes given approximately by a round-trip condition. We found that, in addition to the regular Hawking radiation, trans-Planckian radiation does tunnel out of the black-hole laser.
We analyze the problem of black body radiation in the presence of quantum gravity effects encoded in modified dispersion relations and in a model universe with large extra dimensions. In this context, modified form of Planck distribution, Jeans number, equipartition theorem, spectral energy density, Stefan-Boltzmann law and Wien's law are found and the corresponding results are interpreted. Then, entropy and specific heat of black body radiation are obtained in this setup. Finally, the modified form of Debye law and Dulong-Petit law are investigated in this framework.
We investigate the hypothetical process of gravitational Cherenkov radiation, which may occur in modified gravity theories. We obtain a useful constraint on a modified dispersion relation for propagating modes of gravitational waves, which could be predicted as a consequence of violation of the Lorentz invariance in modified theories of gravity. The constraint from gravitational Cherenkov radiation and that from direct measurements of the gravitational waves emitted by a compact binary system are complementary to each other.
We investigate the effects of a modified dispersion relation proposed by Majhi and Vagenas on the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole thermodynamics in a universe with large extra dimensions. It is shown that entropy, temperature and heat capacity receive new corrections and charged black holes in this framework have less degrees of freedom and decay faster compared to black holes in the Hawking picture. We also study the emission rate of black hole and compare our results with other quantum gravity approaches. In this regard, the existence of the logarithmic prefactor and the relation between dimen…
There are several examples known of two dimensional spacetimes which are linearly stable when perturbed by test scalar classical fields, but which are unstable when perturbed by test scalar quantum fields. We elucidate the mechanism behind such instabilities by considering minimally coupled, massless, scalar, test quantum fields on general two dimensional spacetimes with Cauchy horizons which are classically stable. We identify a geometric feature of such spacetimes which is a necessary condition for obtaining a quantum mechanical divergence of the renormalized expected stress tensor on the Ca…
Due to the exponential high gravitational red shift near the event horizon of a black hole, it might appears that the Hawking radiation would be highly sensitive to some unknown high energy physics. To study possible deviations from the Hawking's prediction, the dispersive field theory models have been proposed, following the Unruh's hydrodynamic analogue of a black hole radiation. In the dispersive field theory models, the dispersion relations of matter fields are modified at high energies, which leads to modifications of equations of motion. In this paper, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method t…
We observed the effect of radiation pressure on the angular sensing and control system of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) interferometer's core optics at LIGO Hanford Observatory. This is the first measurement of this effect in a complete gravitational wave interferometer. Only one of the two angular modes survives with feedback control, since the other mode is suppressed when the control gain is sufficiently large. We developed a mathematical model to understand the physics of the system. This model matches well the dynamics that we observe.
Due to the exponential high gravitational red shift near the event horizon of a black hole, it might appear that the Hawking radiation would be highly sensitive to some unknown high energy physics. To study effects of any unknown physics at the Planck scale on the Hawking radiation, the dispersive field theory models have been proposed, which are variations of Unruh's sonic black hole analogy. In this paper, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to investigate the dispersive field theory models. The preferred frame is the free-fall frame of the black hole. The dispersion relation adopted agrees wi…
We present a general parametrization for the leading order terms in a momentum power expansion of a non-universal Lorentz-violating, but rotational invariant, kinematics and its implications for two-body decay thresholds. The considered framework includes not only modified dispersion relations for particles, but also modified energy-momentum conservation laws, something which goes beyond effective field theory. As a particular and relevant example, bounds on the departures from special relativistic kinematics from the non-observation of vacuum Cherenkov radiation are discussed and compared wit…
We present an investigation of nonlinear interactions between Gravitational Radiation and modified Alfvén modes in astrophysical dusty plasmas. Assuming that stationary charged dust grains form neutralizing background in an electron-ion-dust plasma, we obtain the three wave coupling coefficients, and calculate the growth rates for parametrically coupled gravitational radiation and modified Alfvén-Rao modes. The threshold value of the gravitational wave amplitude associated with convective stabilization is particularly small if the gravitational frequency is close to twice the modified Alfvén w…
We discuss a minimal canonical modification of electrodynamics in order to account for ultraviolet Lorentz violating effects. This modification creates a birefringence that rotates the polarization planes from different directions. Such effects might be detectable in the anisotropic polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation.
We study the instability of de Sitter space-time (dS) under thermal radiation in different vacua. We argue that the mode function solution of a scalar field in four-dimensional dS can be separated into the incoming and outgoing modes. Different vacua for dS are realized by different combinations of positive frequency modes assigned to each solution. For a minimally coupled massless scalar field, we explicitly compute the behavior of the mode function and the corresponding energy-momentum tensor in the Unruh vacuum near the horizon, and find that the horizon area increases (decreases) in time w…
Hawking radiation is one of the cores in modern gratitational theory. Several articles have calculated the spectrum of Hawking radiation in Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics. However, based on recent researches, gravitational systems cannot be studied by the standard statistical mechanics. In this article, we calculate the modification to the spectrum of Hawking radiation in Tsallis statistical mechanics. We obtain the modified Stefan-Boltzmann's law and modified power of Hawking radiation. We confirm the conclusion proposed by Giddings, namely, the radiation should originate from the effe…
The dynamical instability of new-born neutron stars is studied by evolving the linearized hydrodynamical equations. The neutron stars considered in this paper are those produced by the accretion induced collapse of rigidly rotating white dwarfs. A dynamical bar-mode (m=2) instability is observed when the ratio of rotational kinetic energy to gravitational potential energy $β$ of the neutron star is greater than the critical value $β_d \approx 0.25$. This bar-mode instability leads to the emission of gravitational radiation that could be detected by gravitational wave detectors. However, these …
The instability in the r-modes of rotating neutron stars can (in principle) emit substantial amounts of gravitational radiation (GR) which might be detectable by LIGO and similar detectors. Estimates are given here of the detectability of this GR based the non-linear simulations of the r-mode instability by Lindblom, Tohline and Vallisneri. The burst of GR produced by the instability in the rapidly rotating 1.4 solar mass neutron star in this simulation is fairly monochromatic with frequency near 960 Hz and duration about 100 s. A simple analytical expression is derived here for the optimal S/…
We present the first calculations of the gravitational radiation produced by nonaxisymmetric dynamical instability in a rapidly rotating compact star. The star deforms into a bar shape, shedding $\sim 4\%$ of its mass and $\sim 17\%$ of its angular momentum. The gravitational radiation is calculated in the quadrupole approximation. For a mass $M \sim 1.4$ M$_{\odot}$ and radius $R \sim 10$ km, the gravitational waves have frequency $\sim 4$ kHz and amplitude $h \sim 2 \times 10^{-22}$ at the distance of the Virgo Cluster. They carry off energy $ΔE/M \sim 0.1\%$ and radiate angular momentum $ΔJ…
We study the superradiant instability of a massive boson around a spinning black hole in full general relativity without assuming spatial symmetries. We focus on the case of a rapidly spinning black hole in the presence of a vector boson with a Compton wavelength comparable to the black hole radius, which is the regime where relativistic effects are maximized. We follow the growth of the boson cloud through superradiance into the nonlinear regime as it spins down the black hole, reaches a maximum energy, and begins to dissipate through the emission of gravitational waves. We find that the supe…
In this paper, the tunneling of vector boson particles across the event horizon of Kerr-Newman-de Sitter (KNdS) black hole is investigated using the WKB approximation and Hamilton-Jacobi ansatz to Proca equation. The tunneling probability and radiation spectrum at the event horizon of KNdS black hole is obtained. The modified Hawking radiation of stationary and non-stationary KNdS black hole are also investigated using the Rarita-Schwinger ansatz to the deformed Hamilton-Jacobi method and new tortoise coordinate transformation. It is observed that the modified Hawking temperatures near the eve…
In this paper we consider scalar-tensor theories, allowing for both conformal and disformal couplings to a fluid with a generic equation of state. We derive the effective coupling for both background cosmology and for perturbations in that fluid. As an application we consider the scalar degree of freedom to be coupled to baryons and study the dynamics of the tightly coupled photon-baryon fluid in the early universe. We derive an expression for the effective speed of sound, which differs from its value in General Relativity. We apply our findings to the μ-distortion of the cosmic microwave back…
Motivated by possible existence of string axions with ultralight masses, we study gravitational radiation from an axion cloud around a rotating black hole (BH). The axion cloud extracts the rotation energy of the BH by superradiant instability, while it loses energy through the emission of gravitational waves (GWs). In this paper, GWs are treated as perturbations on a fixed background spacetime to derive the energy emission rate. We give an analytic approximate formula for the case where axion's Compton wavelength is much larger than the BH radius, and then, present numerical results without a…
Modified gravity (MOG) is a covariant, relativistic, alternative gravitational theory whose field equations are derived from an action that supplements the spacetime metric tensor with vector and scalar fields. Both gravitational (spin 2) and electromagnetic waves travel on null geodesics of the theory's one metric. Despite a recent claim to the contrary, MOG satisfies the weak equivalence principle and is consistent with observations of the neutron star merger and gamma ray burster event GW170817/GRB170817A.
Compact astrophysical objects that rotate rapidly may encounter the dynamical ``bar instability.'' The bar-like deformation induced by this rotational instability causes the object to become a potentially strong source of gravitational radiation. We have carried out a set of long-duration simulations of the bar instability with two Eulerian hydrodynamics codes. Our results indicate that the remnant of this instability is a persistent bar-like structure that emits a long-lived gravitational radiation signal.
It was recently realized that a model constructed from a Lee-Wick type scalar field theory yields, at the level of homogeneous and isotropic background cosmology, a bouncing cosmology. However, bouncing cosmologies induced by pressure-less matter are in general unstable to the addition of relativistic matter (i.e. radiation). Here we study the possibility of obtaining a bouncing cosmology if we add radiation coupled to the Lee-Wick scalar field. This coupling in principle would allow the energy to flow from radiation to matter, thus providing a drain for the radiation energy. However, we find …
In this paper we shall analyze the $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity phase space, in the case that the corresponding dynamical system is autonomous. In order to make the dynamical system autonomous, we shall appropriately choose the independent variables, and we shall analyze the evolution of the variables numerically, emphasizing on the inflationary attractors. As we demonstrate, the dynamical system has only one de Sitter fixed point, which is unstable, with the instability being traced in one of the independent variables. This result holds true both in the presence and in the absence of matter and r…
We investigate an infinitesimally thin cylindrical shell composed of counter-rotating dust particles. This system was studied by Apostolatos and Thorne in terms of the C-energy for a bounded domain. In this paper, we reanalyze this system by evaluating the C-energy on the future null infinity. We find that some class of momentarily static and radiation-free initial data does not settle down into static, equilibrium configurations, and otherwise infinite amount of the gravitational radiation is emitted to the future null infinity. Our result implies the existence of an instability in this syste…
We have shown that, as in the case of black holes, an ergosphere itself with no event horizon inside can evaporate spontaneously, giving energy radiation to spatial infinity until the ergoregion disappears. However, the feature of his quantum ergoregion instability is very much different from black hole radiation. It is rather analogous to a laser amplification. This analysis is based on the canonical quantization of a neutral scalar field in the presence of unstable modes characterized by complex frequencies in a simple model for a rapidly rotating star.
We investigate the properties of r-mode and inertial mode of slowly rotating, non-isentropic, Newtonian stars, by taking account of the effects of the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force. For the non-isentropic models we consider only two cases, that is, the models with the stable fluid stratification in the whole interior and the models that are fully convective. For simplicity we call these two kinds of models "radiative" and "convective" models in this paper. For both cases, we assume the deviation of the models from isentropic structure is small. Examining the dissipation timescales d…
Analytical r-mode solutions are investigated within the linearized theory in the case of a slowly rotating, Newtonian, barotropic, non-magnetized, perfect-fluid star in which the gravitational radiation (GR) reaction force is present. For the GR reaction term we use the 3.5 post-Newtonian order expansion of the GR force, in order to include the contribution of the current quadrupole moment. We find the explicit expression for the r-mode velocity perturbations and we conclude that they are sinusoidal with the same frequency as the well-known GR force-free linear r-mode solution, and that the GR…
Screened modified gravity (SMG) is a kind of scalar-tensor theory with screening mechanisms, which can suppress the fifth force in dense regions and allow theories to evade the solar system and laboratory tests. In this paper, we investigate how the screening mechanisms in SMG affect the gravitational radiation damping effects, calculate in detail the rate of the energy loss due to the emission of tensor and scalar gravitational radiations, and derive their contributions to the change in the orbital period of the binary system. We find that the scalar radiation depends on the screened paramete…
A recently proposed theory of modified gravity with an explicit ``anomalous'' coupling of the Ricci curvature to matter is discussed, and an inequality is derived which expresses a necessary and sufficient condition to avoid the notorius Dolgov-Kawasaki instability.
In this paper, we have continued the work of Herrera \emph{et al.} \cite{herrera2012dynamical} in $f(G)$ gravitational theory. For this purpose, a spherically symmetric fluid exhibiting locally anisotropic pressure along with the energy density, is taken under consideration. The perturbation scheme is imposed on modified field equations and the dynamical equations. The collapse equation is devised from these perturbed equations which stimulates to disclose the instability zone under both Newtonian and post-Newtonian constraints. It is wrapped up by concluding that dynamical instability is inte…
We have found some analytical cosmological solutions to MOdified Gravity (MOG). These solutions describe different evolutionary epochs of an isotropic and homogeneous universe. During each epoch, the evolution of cosmological perturbation is studied in the Newtonian framework and compared with the corresponding results of GR.
In this study, the quantum gravity effect on the tunnelling radiation of charged massive spin-0 scalar particle from 2+1 dimensional charged rotating Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole is looked into by using the Hamilton-Jacobi approach. For this, we calculate the modified Hawking temperature of the black hole by using the modified Klein-Gordon equation based on the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP), and we noticed that the modified Hawking temperature of the black hole depends not only on the black hole properties, but also on the angular momentum, energy, charge and mass of t…
One interesting class of gravitational radiation sources includes rapidly rotating astrophysical objects that encounter dynamical instabilities. We have carried out a set of simulations of rotationally induced instabilities in differentially rotating polytropes. An $n$=1.5 polytrope with the Maclaurin rotation law will encounter the $m$=2 bar instability at $T/|W| \gtrsim 0.27$. Our results indicate that the remnant of this instability is a persistent bar-like structure that emits a long-lived gravitational radiation signal. Furthermore, dynamical instability is shown to occur in $n$=3.33 poly…
I suggest a novel approach for deriving evolution equations for rapidly rotating relativistic stars affected by radiation-driven Chandrasekhar-Friedman-Schutz (CFS) instability. This approach is based on the multipolar expansion of gravitational wave emission and appeals to the global physical properties of the star (energy, angular momentum, and thermal state), but not to canonical energy and angular momentum, which is traditional. It leads to simple derivation of the CFS instability criterion for normal modes and the evolution equations for a star, affected by this instability. The approach …
Some modified theories of gravity are known to predict monopolar, in addition to the usual quadrupolar and beyond, gravitational radiation in the form of `breathing' modes. For the same reason that octupole and higher-multipole terms often contribute negligibly to the overall wave strain, monopole terms tend to dominate. We investigate both monopolar and quadrupolar continuous gravitational radiation from neutron stars deformed through internal magnetic stresses. We adopt the Parameterised-Post-Newtonian formalism to write down equations describing the leading-order stellar properties in a the…
We analyze the stability of self-gravitating systems which dynamics is investigated using the collisionless Boltzmann equation, and the modified Poisson equation of Eddington-inspired Born-Infield gravity. These equations provide a description of the Jeans paradigm used to determine the critical scale above which such systems collapse. At equilibrium, the systems are described using the time-independent Maxwell- Boltzmann distribution function $f_0(v)$. Considering small perturbations to this equilibrium state, we obtain a modified dispersion relation, and we find a new characteristic scale le…
We present a thorough stability analysis of modified gravity theories in the presence of matter fields. We use the Effective Field Theory framework for Dark Energy and Modified Gravity to retain a general approach for the gravity sector and a Sorkin-Schutz action for the matter one. Then, we work out the proper viability conditions to guarantee in the scalar sector the absence of ghosts, gradient and tachyonic instabilities. The absence of ghosts can be achieved by demanding a positive kinetic matrix, while the lack of a gradient instability is ensured by imposing a positive speed of propagati…
The weak field limit of the nonminimally coupled Boltzmann equation is studied, and relations between the invariant Bardeen scalar potentials are derived. The Jean's criterion for instabilities is found through the modified dispersion relation. Special cases are scrutinised and considerations on the model parameters are discussed for Bok globules.
We carry out 3-D numerical simulations of the dynamical instability in rapidly rotating stars initially modeled as polytropes with n = 1.5, 1.0, and 0.5. The calculations are done with a SPH code using Newtonian gravity, and the gravitational radiation is calculated in the quadrupole limit. All models develop the global m=2 bar mode, with mass and angular momentum being shed from the ends of the bar in two trailing spiral arms. The models then undergo successive episodes of core recontraction and spiral arm ejection, with the number of these episodes increasing as n decreases: this results in …
