Screened modified gravity (SMG) is a kind of scalar-tensor theory with screening mechanisms, which can suppress the fifth force in dense regions and allow theories to evade the solar system and laboratory tests. In this paper, we investigate how the screening mechanisms in SMG affect the gravitational radiation damping effects, calculate in detail the rate of the energy loss due to the emission of tensor and scalar gravitational radiations, and derive their contributions to the change in the orbital period of the binary system. We find that the scalar radiation depends on the screened parameters and the propagation speed of scalar waves, and the scalar dipole radiation dominates the orbital decay of the binary system. For strongly self-gravitating bodies, all effects of scalar sector are strongly suppressed by the screening mechanisms in SMG. By comparing our results to observations of binary system PSR J1738+0333, we place the stringent constraints on the screening mechanisms in SMG. As an application of these results, we focus on three specific models of SMG (chameleon, symmetron, and dilaton), and derive the constraints on the model parameters, respectively.
We consider the scalar field profile around relativistic compact objects such as neutron stars for a range of modified gravity models with screening mechanisms of the chameleon and Damour-Polyakov types. We focus primarily on inverse power law chameleons and the environmentally dependent dilaton as examples of both mechanisms. We discuss the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation and then implement a relaxation algorithm to solve for the scalar profiles numerically. We find that chameleons and dilatons behave in a similar manner and that there is a large degeneracy between the modified g…
We present a general parallelized and easy-to-use code to perform numerical simulations of structure formation using the COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration) method for cosmological models that exhibit scale-dependent growth at the level of first and second order Lagrangian perturbation theory. For modified gravity theories we also include screening using a fast approximate method that covers all the main examples of screening mechanisms in the literature. We test the code by comparing it to full simulations of two popular modified gravity models, namely $f(R)$ gravity and nDGP, and find go…
Screened modified gravity (SMG) is a kind of scalar-tensor theories with screening mechanisms, which can generate screening effect to suppress the fifth force in high density environments and pass the solar system tests. Meanwhile, the potential of scalar field in the theories can drive the acceleration of the late universe. In this paper, we calculate the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters $γ$ and $β$, the effective gravitational constant $G_{\rm eff}$ and the effective cosmological constant $Λ$ for SMG with a general potential $V$ and coupling function $A$. The dependence of these…
Screened modified gravity theories evade the solar system tests that have proved prohibitive for classical alternative gravity theories. In many cases, they do not fit into the PPN formalism. The environmental dependence of the screening has motivated a concerted effort to find new and novel probes of gravity using objects that are well-studied but have hitherto not been used to test gravity. Astrophysical objects---stars, galaxies, clusters---have proved competitive tools for this purpose since they occupy the partially-screened regime between solar system and the Hubble flow. In this article…
Long range scalar fields with a coupling to matter appear to violate known bounds on gravitation in the solar system and the laboratory. This is evaded thanks to screening mechanisms. In this short review, we shall present the various screening mechanisms from an effective field theory point of view. We then investigate how they can and will be tested in the laboratory and on astrophysical and cosmological scales.
The acceleration of the expansion of the Universe has led to the construction of Dark Energy models where a light scalar field may have a range reaching up to cosmological scales. Screening mechanisms allow these models to evade the tight gravitational tests in the solar system and the laboratory. I will briefly review some of the salient features of screened modified gravity models of the chameleon, dilaton or symmetron types using $f(R)$ gravity as a template.
We calculate the rate of energy loss from compact astrophysical objects due to a scalar field in screened modified gravity models of the chameleon, dilaton and symmetron types. The cosmological evolution of the field results in a time-variation of the scalar charge of screened objects implying the emission of scalar radiation. Focusing on binary objects, this leads to an additional decay in the orbital period complementing that due to the emission of gravitational waves. Using the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar, the double pulsar PSR J0737-3039 and the pulsar-white dwarf system PSR J1738+033, we f…
Chameleon, environmentally dependent dilaton, and symmetron gravity are three models of modified gravity in which the effects of the additional scalar degree of freedom are screened in dense environments. They have been extensively studied in laboratory, cosmological, and astrophysical contexts. In this paper, we present a preliminary investigation into whether additional constraints can be provided by studying these scalar fields around black holes. By looking at the properties of a static, spherically symmetric black hole, we find that the presence of a non-uniform matter distribution induce…
We consider modified gravity models driven by a scalar field whose effects are screened in high density regions due to the presence of non-linearities in its interaction potential and/or its coupling to matter. Our approach covers chameleon, f(R) gravity, dilaton and symmetron models and allows a unified description of all these theories. We find that the dynamics of modified gravity are entirely captured by the time variation of the scalar field mass and its coupling to matter evaluated at the cosmological minimum of its effective potential, where the scalar field sits since an epoch prior to…
We show how light scalar fields can account for the discrepancy between the theoretical and observed values of the anomalous magnetic moment of the (anti)muon. When coupled to both matter and photons, light scalar fields induce a change of the anomalous magnetic moment of charged particles. This arises from two concurrent effects. Classically, light scalars induce a change of the cyclotron frequency, complementing the electromagnetic effects coming from the magnetic and electric fields used experimentally. Light scalars also contribute to the anomalous magnetic moment quantum mechanically at t…
Testing gravity by binary pulsars nowadays becomes a key issue. Screened modified gravity is a kind of scalar-tensor theory with screening mechanism in order to satisfy the tight Solar System tests. In this paper, we investigate how the screening mechanism affects the orbital dynamics of binary pulsars, and calculate in detail the five post-Keplerian (PK) parameters in this theory. These parameters differ from those of general relativity (GR), and the differences are quantified by the scalar charges, which lead to the dipole radiation in this theory. We combine the observables of PK parameters…
Gravitational wave (GW) observations provide insight into the gravity regime. These observations relies on the comparison of the data to the GWs model, which depends on the orbital evolution of the binary systems. In this paper, we study the orbital evolution of eccentric compact binaries within screened modified gravity, which is a kind of scalar-tensor theory with screening mechanisms. According to the Noether's theorem, from the theory's GW action, we compute the angular momentum flux both as a function of the fields in the theory and as a function of the multipole moments of a N-body syste…
In the context of scalar tensor theories for gravity, there is a universally adopted hypothesis when running N-body simulations that time derivatives in the equation of motion for the scalar field are negligible. In this work we propose to test this assumption for one specific scalar-tensor model with a gravity screening mechanism: the symmetron. To this end, we implemented the necessary modifications to include the non-static terms in the N-body code Ramses. We present test cases and results from cosmological simulations. Our main finding when comparing static vs. non-static simulations is th…
The parameterised post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism has enabled stringent tests of static weak-field gravity in a theory-independent manner. Here we incorporate screening mechanisms of modified gravity theories into the framework by introducing an effective gravitational coupling and defining the PPN parameters as functions of position. To determine these functions we develop a general method for efficiently performing the post-Newtonian expansion in screened regimes. For illustration, we derive all the PPN functions for a cubic galileon and a chameleon model. We also analyse the Shapiro time del…
We consider the implications of the swampland conjectures on scalar-tensor theories defined in the Einstein frame in which the scalar interaction is screened. We show that chameleon models are not in the swampland provided the coupling to matter is larger than unity and the mass of the scalar field is much larger than the Hubble rate. We apply these conditions to the inverse power law chameleon and the symmetron. We then focus on the dilaton of string theory in the strong coupling limit, as defined in the string frame. We show that solar system tests of gravity imply that viable dilaton models…
Scalar-tensor gravity, with the screening mechanisms to avoid the severe constraints of the fifth force in the Solar System, can be described with a unified theoretical framework, the so-called screened modified gravity (SMG). Within this framework, in this paper we calculate the waveforms of gravitational-waves (GWs) emitted by inspiral compact binaries, which include four polarization modes, the plus $h_{+}$, cross $h_{\times}$, breathing $h_{b}$, and longitudinal $h_{L}$ modes. The scalar polarizations $h_b$ and $h_L$ are both caused by the scalar field of SMG, and satisfy a simple linear r…
The screened modified gravity (SMG) is a unified theoretical framework, which describes the scalar-tensor gravity with screening mechanism. Based on the gravitational-wave (GW) waveform derived in our previous work \citep{liu2018waveforms}, in this article we investigate the potential constraints on SMG theory through the GW observation of the future space-borne GW detectors, including LISA, TianQin and Taiji. We find that, for the EMRIs consisting of a massive black hole and a neutron star, if the EMRIs are at Virgo cluster, the GW signals can be detected by the detectors at quite high signif…

Viable modifications of gravity on cosmological scales predominantly rely on screening mechanisms to recover Einstein's Theory of General Relativity in the Solar System, where it has been well tested. A parametrisation of the effects of such modifications in the spherical collapse model is presented here for the use of modelling the modified nonlinear cosmological structure. The formalism allows an embedding of the different screening mechanisms operating in scalar-tensor theories through large values of the gravitational potential or its first or second derivatives as well as of linear suppre…
Viable modifications of gravity that may produce cosmic acceleration need to be screened in high-density regions such as the Solar System, where general relativity is well tested. Screening mechanisms also prevent strong anomalies in the large-scale structure and limit the constraints that can be inferred on these gravity models from cosmology. We find that by suppressing the contribution of the screened high-density regions in the matter power spectrum, allowing a greater contribution of unscreened low densities, modified gravity models can be more readily discriminated from the concordance c…
Gravitational theories differing from General Relativity may explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe without a cosmological constant. However, to pass local gravitational tests, a "screening mechanism" is needed to suppress, on small scales, the fifth force driving the cosmological acceleration. We consider the simplest of these theories, i.e. a scalar-tensor theory with first-order derivative self-interactions, and study isolated (static and spherically symmetric) non-relativistic and relativistic stars. We produce screened solutions and use them as initial data for non-linear numer…
Theories that attempt to explain cosmic acceleration by modifying gravity typically introduces a long-range scalar force that needs to be screened on small scales. One common screening mechanism is the chameleon, where the scalar force is screened in environments with a sufficiently deep gravitational potential, but acts unimpeded in regions with a shallow gravitational potential. This leads to a variation in the overall gravitational G with environment. We show such a variation can occur within a star itself, significantly affecting its evolution and structure, provided that the host galaxy i…
We investigate the effect of modifed gravity with screening mechanisms, such as the chameleon or symmetron models, upon the structure of main sequence stars. We find that unscreened stars can be significantly more luminous and ephemeral than their screened doppelgangers. By embedding these stars into dwarf galaxies, which can be unscreened for values of the parameters not yet ruled out observationally, we show that the cumulative effect of their increased luminosity can enhance the total galactic luminosity. We estimate this enhancement and find that it can be considerable given model paramete…
We use distance measurements in the nearby universe to carry out new tests of gravity, surpassing other astrophysical tests by over two orders of magnitude for chameleon theories. The three nearby distance indicators -- cepheids, tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) stars, and water masers -- operate in gravitational fields of widely different strengths. This enables tests of scalar-tensor gravity theories because they are screened from enhanced forces to different extents. Inferred distances from cepheids and TRGB stars are altered (in opposite directions) over a range of chameleon gravity theo…
We study the static and spherical symmetric (SSS) configurations in the non-minimal model of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity with a flat reference metric. Considering the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, the Bianchi identity, and energy-momentum conservation, we find a new algebraic equation for the radial coordinate of the reference metric. We demonstrate that this equation suggests an absence of the Vainshtein mechanism in the minimal model of the dRGT massive gravity, while it has two branches of solutions where one connects with the Schwarzschild spac…
Scalar-tensor theories leaving significant modifications of gravity at cosmological scales rely on screening mechanisms to recover General Relativity (GR) in high-density regions and pass stringent tests with astrophysical objects. Much focus has been placed on the signatures of such modifications of gravity on the propagation of gravitational waves (GWs) through cosmological distances while typically assuming their emission from fully screened regions with the wave generation strictly abiding by GR. Here, we closely analyse the impact of screening mechanisms on the inspiral GW waveforms from …
Current constraints on gravity are relatively weak on galactic and intergalactic scales. Screened modified gravity models can exhibit complex behaviour there without violating stringent tests of gravity within our Solar System. They might hence provide viable extensions of the theory of gravity. Here, we use galaxy kinematics to constrain screened modified gravity models. We focus on chameleon $f(R)$ gravity and predict its impact on galaxy rotation curves and radial acceleration relations. This is achieved by post-processing state-of-the-art galaxy formation simulations from the \textsc{aurig…
We investigate the hypothetical process of gravitational Cherenkov radiation, which may occur in modified gravity theories. We obtain a useful constraint on a modified dispersion relation for propagating modes of gravitational waves, which could be predicted as a consequence of violation of the Lorentz invariance in modified theories of gravity. The constraint from gravitational Cherenkov radiation and that from direct measurements of the gravitational waves emitted by a compact binary system are complementary to each other.
In this work, we study the large scale structure formation in the modified gravity in the framework of Palatini formalism and compare the results with the equivalent smooth dark energy models as a tool to distinguish between these models. Through the inverse method, we reconstruct the dynamics of universe, modified gravity action and the structure formation indicators like the screened mass function and gravitational slip parameter. Consequently, we extract the matter density power spectrum for these two models in the linear regime and show that the modified gravity and dark energy models pred…
In this paper, we study the chameleon profile in inhomogeneous density distributions and find that the fifth force in thin shell near the surface is weaker from what expected in homogeneous density distributions. Also, we check the validity of quasi-static approximation for the chameleon scalar field in the astrophysical time scales. We have investigated the rolling down behaviour of the scalar field on its effective potential inside a one solar mass red giant star by using MESA code. We have found that the scalar field is fast enough to follow the minimum of the potential. This adiabatic beha…
In general, modified gravity theories are modifications or extensions of Einstein's general relativity. Some of them give rise to additional scalar degrees of freedom in Nature. If these scalar fields exist and are light enough, they should cause a gravity-like fifth force that could, in principle, exceed gravity in its strength. However, there are tight constraints on fifth forces from Solar System-based tests. Screening mechanisms are popular means for avoiding these constraints by suppressing a fifth force in regions of high environmental mass density but allowing for phenomenologically int…
We present an investigation of nonlinear interactions between Gravitational Radiation and modified Alfvén modes in astrophysical dusty plasmas. Assuming that stationary charged dust grains form neutralizing background in an electron-ion-dust plasma, we obtain the three wave coupling coefficients, and calculate the growth rates for parametrically coupled gravitational radiation and modified Alfvén-Rao modes. The threshold value of the gravitational wave amplitude associated with convective stabilization is particularly small if the gravitational frequency is close to twice the modified Alfvén w…
The analysis of perturbative quantities is a powerful tool to distinguish between different Dark Energy models and gravity theories degenerated at the background level. In this work, we generalise the integral solution of the matter density contrast for General Relativity gravity to a wide class of Modified Gravity (MG) theories. To calculate this solution is necessary prior knowledge of the Hubble rate, the density parameter at the present epoch ($Ω_{m0}$) and the functional form of the effective Newton's constant that characterises the gravity theory. We estimate in a model-independent way t…
We extend the scale-dependent Gaussian Streaming Model (GSM) to produce analytical predictions for the anisotropic redshift-space correlation function for biased tracers in modified gravity models. Employing the Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (CLPT) re-summation scheme, with a local Lagrangian bias schema provided by the peak-background split formalism, we predict the necessary ingredients that enter the GSM, the real-space halo pairwise velocity and the pairwise velocity dispersion. We further consider effective field theory contributions to the pairwise velocity dispersion in ord…
In this paper, the tunneling of vector boson particles across the event horizon of Kerr-Newman-de Sitter (KNdS) black hole is investigated using the WKB approximation and Hamilton-Jacobi ansatz to Proca equation. The tunneling probability and radiation spectrum at the event horizon of KNdS black hole is obtained. The modified Hawking radiation of stationary and non-stationary KNdS black hole are also investigated using the Rarita-Schwinger ansatz to the deformed Hamilton-Jacobi method and new tortoise coordinate transformation. It is observed that the modified Hawking temperatures near the eve…
In this paper, we study the GUP (Generalized Uncertainty Principle) modified Hawking radiation of rotating polytropic black hole given in the Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. To this end, the GUP modified Klein-Gordon equation is applied for investigating the quantum tunneling of scalar particles from the polytropic black hole. After reducing the obtained radial wave equation to the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation, we derive the reflection and transmission probabilities of the radiation. A detail discussion on how the reflection and transmission (greybody factor) probabilities are derived for…
In this paper we consider scalar-tensor theories, allowing for both conformal and disformal couplings to a fluid with a generic equation of state. We derive the effective coupling for both background cosmology and for perturbations in that fluid. As an application we consider the scalar degree of freedom to be coupled to baryons and study the dynamics of the tightly coupled photon-baryon fluid in the early universe. We derive an expression for the effective speed of sound, which differs from its value in General Relativity. We apply our findings to the μ-distortion of the cosmic microwave back…
Models that seek to explain cosmic acceleration through modifications to General Relativity (GR) evade stringent Solar System constraints through a restoring, screening mechanism. Down-weighting the high density, screened regions in favor of the low density, unscreened ones offers the potential to enhance the amount of information carried in such modified gravity models. In this work, we assess the performance of a new "marked" transformation and perform a systematic comparison with the clipping and logarithmic transformations, in the context of $Λ$CDM and the symmetron and $f(R)$ modified gra…
We study the problem of the instability of inhomogeneous radiation universes in quadratic lagrangian theories of gravity written as a system of evolution equations with constraints. We construct formal series expansions and show that the resulting solutions have a smaller number of arbitrary functions than that required in a general solution. These results continue to hold for more general polynomial extensions of general relativity.
Modified gravity (MOG) is a covariant, relativistic, alternative gravitational theory whose field equations are derived from an action that supplements the spacetime metric tensor with vector and scalar fields. Both gravitational (spin 2) and electromagnetic waves travel on null geodesics of the theory's one metric. Despite a recent claim to the contrary, MOG satisfies the weak equivalence principle and is consistent with observations of the neutron star merger and gamma ray burster event GW170817/GRB170817A.
We discuss a minimal canonical modification of electrodynamics in order to account for ultraviolet Lorentz violating effects. This modification creates a birefringence that rotates the polarization planes from different directions. Such effects might be detectable in the anisotropic polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation.
Recently, Banerjee and Kulkarni (R. Banerjee, S. Kulkarni, arXiv:0707.2449 [hep-th]) suggested that it is conceptually clean and economical to use only the covariant anomaly to derive Hawking radiation from a black hole. Based upon this simplified formalism, we apply the covariant anomaly cancellation method to investigate Hawking radiation from a modified Schwarzschild black hole in the theory of rainbow gravity. Hawking temperature of the gravity's rainbow black hole is derived from the energy-momentum flux by requiring it to cancel the covariant gravitational anomaly at the horizon. We stre…
In this paper, by applying the deformed dispersion relation in quantum gravity theory, we study the correction of fermions' tunneling radiation from non-stationary symmetric black holes. Firstly, the motion equation of fermions is modified in the gravitational spacetime. Based on the motion equation, the modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation has been obtained by a semiclassical approximation method. Then, the tunneling behavior of fermions at the event horizon of non-stationary symmetric Kerr black hole is investigated. Finally, the results show that in the non-stationary symmetric background, the…
$f(R)$ is a paradigmatic modified gravity theory that typifies extensions to General Relativity with new light degrees of freedom and hence screened fifth forces between masses. These forces produce observable signatures in galaxy morphology, caused by a violation of the weak equivalence principle due to a differential impact of screening among galaxies' mass components. We compile statistical datasets of two morphological indicators -- offsets between stars and gas in galaxies and warping of stellar disks -- and use them to constrain the strength and range of a thin-shell-screened fifth force…
We present a general parametrization for the leading order terms in a momentum power expansion of a non-universal Lorentz-violating, but rotational invariant, kinematics and its implications for two-body decay thresholds. The considered framework includes not only modified dispersion relations for particles, but also modified energy-momentum conservation laws, something which goes beyond effective field theory. As a particular and relevant example, bounds on the departures from special relativistic kinematics from the non-observation of vacuum Cherenkov radiation are discussed and compared wit…
We consider the modified gravity non-minimally coupled with matter Lagrangian for the description of early-time and late-time universe. Such $F(R)$ ($F(G)$) gravity in the absence of non-minimal coupling is viable theory which passes the local tests and reproduces the $Λ$CDM era. For qualitatively similar choice of non-minimal gravitational coupling function it is shown that the unified description of early-time inflation and late-time cosmic acceleration is possible. It is interesting that matter (scalar) which supports the inflationary era is gravitationally screened at late times. Hence, it…
