The goal of this chapter is to illustrate a generalization of the Fibonacci word to the case of 2-dimensional configurations on $\mathbb{Z}^2$. More precisely, we consider a particular subshift of $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{Z}^2}$ on the alphabet $\mathcal{A}=\{0,\dots,15\}$ for which we give three characterizations: as the subshift $\mathcal{X}_Φ$ generated by a 2-dimensional morphism $Φ$ defined on $\mathcal{A}$; as the Wang shift $Ω_\mathcal{Z}$ defined by a set $\mathcal{Z}$ of 16 Wang tiles; as the symbolic dynamical system $\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{P}_\mathcal{Z},R_\mathcal{Z}}$ representing the orbits under some $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action $R_\mathcal{Z}$ defined by rotations on $\mathbb{T}^2$ and coded by some topological partition $\mathcal{P}_\mathcal{Z}$ of $\mathbb{T}^2$ into 16 polygonal atoms. We prove their equality $Ω_\mathcal{Z} =\mathcal{X}_Φ=\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{P}_\mathcal{Z},R_\mathcal{Z}}$ by showing that they are self-similar with respect to the substitution $Φ$.
This chapter provides a transversal reading of results divided into four different articles obtained through the study of the Jeandel-Rao Wang shift. It gathers in one place the methods introduced to desubstitute Wang shifts and to desubstitute codings of $\mathbb{Z}^2$-actions by focussing on a simple 2-dimensional self-similar subshift. SageMath code to find marker tiles and compute the Rauzy induction of $\mathbb{Z}^2$-rotations is provided allowing to reproduce the computations. The chapter contains many exercises whose solutions are provided at the end.
We show that if $(X,T)$ is an extension of an aperiodic subshift (a subsystem of $({1,2,...,l}^{\mathbb{Z}},\mathrm{shift})$ for some $l\in\mathbb{N}$) and has mean dimension $mdim(X,T)<\frac{D}{2}$ $(D\in \mathbb{N}$), then it embeds equivariantly in (([0,1]^{D})^{\mathbb{Z}},\mathrm{shift})$. The result is sharp. If $(X,T)$ is an extension of an aperiodic zero-dimensional system then it embeds equivariantly in $(([0,1]^{D+1})^{\mathbb{Z}},\mathrm{shift})$.
We give strongly aperiodic subshifts of finite type on every hyperbolic surface group; more generally, for each pair of expansive primitive symbolic substitution systems with incommensurate growth rates, we construct strongly aperiodic subshifts of finite type on their orbit graphs.
We consider the structure of aperiodic points in $\mathbb Z^2$-subshifts, and in particular the positions at which they fail to be periodic. We prove that if a $\mathbb Z^2$-subshift contains points whose smallest period is arbitrarily large, then it contains an aperiodic point. This lets us characterise the computational difficulty of deciding if an $\mathbb Z^2$-subshift of finite type contains an aperiodic point. Another consequence is that $\mathbb Z^2$-subshifts with no aperiodic point have a very strong dynamical structure and are almost topologically conjugate to some $\mathbb Z$-subshi…
This paper aims to better understand the link better understand the links between aperiodicity in subshifts and pattern complexity. Our main contribution deals with substitutive subshifts, an equivalent to substitutive tilings in the context of symbolic dynamics. For a class of substitutive subshifts, we prove a quadratic lower bound on their pattern complexity. Together with an already known upper bound, this shows that this class of substitutive subshifts has a pattern complexity in $Θ(n^2)$. We also prove that the recent bound of Kari and Moutot, showing that any aperiodic subshift has patt…
A theorem of Gao, Jackson and Seward, originally conjectured to be false by Glasner and Uspenskij, asserts that every countable group admits a $2$-coloring. A direct consequence of this result is that every countable group has a strongly aperiodic subshift on the alphabet $\{0,1\}$. In this article, we use Lovász local lemma to first give a new simple proof of said theorem, and second to prove the existence of a $G$-effectively closed strongly aperiodic subshift for any finitely generated group $G$. We also study the problem of constructing subshifts which generalize a property of Sturmian seq…
We explicitly construct a strongly aperiodic subshift of finite type for the discrete Heisenberg group. Our example builds on the classical aperiodic tilings of the plane due to Raphael Robinson. Extending those tilings to the Heisenberg group by exploiting the group's structure and posing additional local rules to prune out remaining periodic behavior we maintain a rich projective subdynamics on $\mathbb Z^2$ cosets. In addition the obtained subshift factors onto a strongly aperiodic, minimal sofic shift via a map that is invertible on a dense set of configurations.
It is well known that if $G$ admits a f.g. subgroup $H$ with a weaklyaperiodic SFT (resp. an undecidable domino problem), then $G$itself has a weakly aperiodic SFT (resp. an undecidable domino problem). We prove that we can replace the property "$H$ is a subgroup of $G$"by "$H$ acts translation-like on $G$", provided $H$ is finitely presented. In particular:* If $G\_1$ and $G\_2$ are f.g. infinite groups, then $G\_1 \times G\_2$ has a weakly aperiodic SFT (and actually a undecidable domino problem). In particular the Grigorchuk group has an undecidable domino problem. * Every infinite f.g. $p$-g…
The classical Domino problem asks whether there exists a tiling in which none of the forbidden patterns given as input appear. In this paper, we consider the aperiodic version of the Domino problem: given as input a family of forbidden patterns, does it allow an aperiodic tiling? The input may correspond to a subshift of finite type, a sofic subshift or an effective subshift. arXiv:1805.08829 proved that this problem is co-recursively enumerable ($Π_0^1$-complete) in dimension 2 for geometrical reasons. We show that it is much harder, namely analytic ($Σ_1^1$-complete), in higher dimension: $d…
In this note we prove the following results: $\bullet$ If a finitely presented group $G$ admits a strongly aperiodic SFT, then $G$ has decidable word problem. More generally, for f.g. groups that are not recursively presented, there exists a computable obstruction for them to admit strongly aperiodic SFTs. $\bullet$ On the positive side, we build strongly aperiodic SFTs on some new classes of groups. We show in particular that some particular monster groups admits strongly aperiodic SFTs for trivial reasons. Then, for a large class of group $G$, we show how to build strongly aperiodic SFTs ove…
At the turn of this century Durand, and Lagarias and Pleasants established that key features of minimal subshifts (and their higher-dimensional analogues) to be studied are linearly repetitive, repulsive and power free. Since then, generalisations and extensions of these features, namely $α$-repetitive, $α$-repulsive and $α$-finite ($α\geq 1$), have been introduced and studied. We establish the equivalence of $α$-repulsive and $α$-finite for general subshifts over finite alphabets. Further, we studied a family of aperiodic minimal subshifts stemming from Grigorchuk's infinite $2$-group $G$. In…
Automorphism groups are intrincate conjugacy invariants for subshifts, which can reveal important features of the dynamical structure of a shift action. One important case is the study of automorphism groups when the underlying subshift has a very rigid structure, e.g. substitutive subshifts or aperiodic constructions with large-scale self-similarity, such as the Robinson shift. In this work we study the automorphism group of bijective substitutive subshifts, and a potential generalization in the form of the group of extended symmetries, studied previously by Michael Baake, John Roberts and Re…
We study Schrödinger operators on the real line whose potentials are generated by an underlying ergodic subshift over a finite alphabet and a rule that replaces symbols by compactly supported potential pieces. We first develop the standard theory that shows that the spectrum and the spectral type are almost surely constant, and that identifies the almost sure absolutely continuous spectrum with the essential closure of the set of energies with vanishing Lyapunov exponent. Using results of Damanik-Lenz and Klassert-Lenz-Stollmann, we also show that the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue …
We present a technique to lift some tilings of the discrete hyperbolic plane -- tilings defined by a 1D substitution -- into a zero entropy subshift of finite type (SFT) on non-abelian amenable Baumslag-Solitar groups $BS(1,n)$ for $n\geq2$. For well chosen hyperbolic tilings, this SFT is also aperiodic and minimal. As an application we construct a strongly aperiodic SFT on $BS(1,n)$ with a hierarchical structure, which is an analogue of Robinson's construction on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ or Goodman-Strauss's on $\mathbb{H}_2$.
We study two relations on multi-dimensional subshifts: A pre-order based on the patterns configurations contain and the Cantor-Bendixson rank. We exhibit several structural properties of two-dimensional subshifts: We characterize the simplest aperiodic configurations in countable SFTs, we give a combinatorial characterization of uncountable subshifts, we prove that there always exists configurations without any periodicity but that have the simplest possible combinatorics in countable SFTs. Finally, we prove that some Cantor-Bendixson ranks are impossible for countable SFTs, leaving only a few…
Using a deterministic version of the self-similar (or hierarchical, or fixed-point ) method for constructing 2-dimensional subshifts of finite type (SFTs), we construct aperiodic 2D SFTs with a unique direction of non-expansiveness and prove that the emptiness problem of SFTs is undecidable even in this restricted case. As an additional application of our method, we characterize the sets of directions that can be the set of non-expansive directions of 2D SFTs.
In the present paper, we use the generalized multifractal framework introduced by Olsen to study the Bowen entropy and packing entropy of historic sets with typical weights over aperiodic and irreducible shifts of finite type. Following those results and a transfer from almost everywhere to everywhere, we show that for each point $ω$ in a irreducible shift of finite type $Σ_A$, the Bowen entropy of the set consisting of all the points that are mean Li-Yorke pairs with $ω$ is $0$, and its packing entropy is full. This result is beyond the ergodic theory. Also, by the transfer from almost everyw…
We define a random walk adic transformation associated to an aperiodic random walk on $G=\mathbb{Z}^{k}\times\mathbb{R}^{D-k}$ driven by a $β$-transformation and study its ergodic properties. In particular, this transformation is conservative, ergodic, infinite measure preserving and we prove that it is asymptotically distributionally stable and bounded rationally ergodic. Related earlier work appears in [AS] and [ANSS] for random walk adic transformations associated to an aperiodic random walk driven by a subshift of finite type.
We generalize a result of Hochman in two simultaneous directions: Instead of realizing an effectively closed $\mathbb{Z}^d$ action as a factor of a subaction of a $\mathbb{Z}^{d+2}$-SFT we realize an action of a finitely generated group analogously in any semidirect product of the group with $\mathbb{Z}^2$. Let $H$ be a finitely generated group and $G = \mathbb{Z}^2 \rtimes H$ a semidirect product. We show that for any effectively closed $H$-dynamical system $(Y,f)$ where $Y$ is a Cantor set, there exists a $G$-subshift of finite type $(X,σ)$ such that the $H$-subaction of $(X,σ)$ is an extens…
We define a Wang tile set $\mathcal{U}$ of cardinality 19 and show that the set $Ω_\mathcal{U}$ of all valid Wang tilings $\mathbb{Z}^2\to\mathcal{U}$ is self-similar, aperiodic and is a minimal subshift of $\mathcal{U}^{\mathbb{Z}^2}$. Thus $\mathcal{U}$ is the second smallest self-similar aperiodic Wang tile set known after Ammann's set of 16 Wang tiles. The proof is based on the unique composition property. We prove the existence of an expansive, primitive and recognizable $2$-dimensional morphism $ω:Ω_\mathcal{U}\toΩ_\mathcal{U}$ that is onto up to a shift. The proof of recognizability is …
We study the (Hölder-)continuous behavior of the spectra belonging to a family of linear bounded operators $(A_t)_{t\in T}$ indexed by a topological space $T$. For the cases of self-adjoint, unitary and normal operators, a characterization of the continuity of $Σ:T\to \mathcal{K}(\mathbb{R}), t\mapsto σ(A_t),$ is proven while the distance of the spectra is measured by the Hausorff metric. If $T$ is a metric space, the Hölder-continuous behavior of $Σ$ is characterized for self-adjoint and unitary operators. Here we observe interesting effects, namely the rate of convergence is bisect whenever …
We consider continuous $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ valued cocycles over general dynamical systems and discuss a variety of uniformity notions. In particular, we provide a description of uniform one-parameter families of continuous $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ cocycles as $G_δ$-sets. These results are then applied to Schrödinger operators with dynamically defined potentials. In the case where the base dynamics is given by a subshift satisfying the Boshernitzan condition, we show that for a generic continuous sampling function, the associated Schrödinger cocycles are uniform for all energies and,…
Let $K\subset \mathbb{R}$ be a self-similar set generated by some iterated function system. In this paper we prove, under some assumptions, that $K$ can be identified with a subshift of finite type. With this identification, we can calculate the Hausdorff dimension of $K$ as well as the set of elements in $K$ with unique codings using the machinery of Mauldin and Williams \cite{MW}. We give three different applications of our main result. Firstly, we calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points of $K$ with multiple codings. Secondly, in the setting of $β$-expansions, when the set of …
We define a partition $\mathcal{P}_0$ and a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-rotation ($\mathbb{Z}^2$-action defined by rotations) on a 2-dimensional torus whose associated symbolic dynamical system is a minimal proper subshift of the Jeandel-Rao aperiodic Wang shift defined by 11 Wang tiles. We define another partition $\mathcal{P}_\mathcal{U}$ and a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-rotation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ whose associated symbolic dynamical system is equal to a minimal and aperiodic Wang shift defined by 19 Wang tiles. This proves that $\mathcal{P}_\mathcal{U}$ is a Markov partition for the $\mathbb{Z}^2$-rotation on $\math…
This paper studies several aspects of symbolic factors of $\mathcal{S}$-adic subshifts of finite alphabet rank. First, we address a problem raised in [DDPM20] about the topological rank of symbolic factors of $\mathcal{S}$-adic subshifts and prove that this rank is at most the one of the extension system, improving results from [E20] and [GH2020]. As a consequence of our methods, we prove that finite topological rank systems are coalescent. Second, we investigate the structure of fibers $π^{-1}(y)$ of factor maps $π\colon(X,T)\to(Y,T)$ between minimal $\mathcal{S}$-adic subshifts of finite alp…

Following an earlier similar conjecture of Kellendonk and Putnam, Giordano, Putnam and Skau conjectured that all minimal, free ${\mathbb Z}^d$ actions on Cantor sets admit "small cocycles." These represent classes in $H^1$ that are mapped to small vectors in ${\mathbb R}^d$ by the Ruelle-Sullivan (RS) map. We show that there exist ${\mathbb Z}^d$ actions where no such small cocycles exist, and where the image of $H^1$ under RS is ${\mathbb Z}^d$. Our methods involve tiling spaces and shape deformations, and along the way we prove a relation between the image of RS and the set of "virtual eigen…
We introduce a family of piecewise isometries. This family is similar to the ones studied by Hooper and Schwartz. We prove that a renormalization scheme exists inside this family and compute the Hausdorff dimension of the discontinuity set. The methods use some cocycles and a continued fraction algorithm.
Jeandel and Rao proved that 11 is the size of the smallest set of Wang tiles, i.e., unit squares with colored edges, that admit valid tilings (contiguous edges of adjacent tiles have the same color) of the plane, none of them being invariant under a nontrivial translation. We study herein the Wang shift $Ω_0$ made of all valid tilings using the set $\mathcal{T}_0$ of 11 aperiodic Wang tiles discovered by Jeandel and Rao. We show that there exists a minimal subshift $X_0$ of $Ω_0$ such that every tiling in $X_0$ can be decomposed uniquely into 19 distinct patches of sizes ranging from 45 to 112…
For each $Π^0_1$ $S\subseteq \mathbb{N}$, let the $S$-square shift be the two-dimensional subshift on the alphabet $\{0,1\}$ whose elements consist of squares of 1s of various sizes on a background of 0s, where the side length of each square is in $S$. Similarly, let the distinct-square shift consist of seas of squares such that no two finite squares have the same size. Extending the self-similar Turing machine tiling construction of Durand, Romashchenko and Shen, we show that if $X$ is an $S$-square shift or any effectively closed subshift of the distinct square shift, then $X$ is sofic.
The construction of affine interval exchange maps with wandering intervals that are semi-conjugate with a given self-similar interval exchange map is strongly related with the existence of the so called minimal sequences associated with local potentials, which are certain elements of the substitution subshift arising from the given interval exchange map. In this article, under the condition called unique representation property, we characterize such minimal sequences for potentials coming from non-real eigenvalues of the substitution matrix. We also give conditions on the slopes of the affine …
Let $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}$ be the unique attractor of an iterated function system. We consider the case where $K$ is an interval and study those elements of $K$ with a unique coding. We prove under mild conditions that the set of points with a unique coding can be identified with a subshift of finite type. As a consequence of this, we can show that the set of points with a unique coding is a graph-directed self-similar set in the sense of Mauldin and Williams \cite{MW}. The theory of Mauldin and Williams then provides a method by which we can explicitly calculate the Hausdorff dimension of thi…
Let $σ:\boldsymbolΣ\to\boldsymbolΣ$ be the left shift acting on $ \boldsymbolΣ $, a one-sided Markov subshift on a countable alphabet. Our intention is to guarantee the existence of $σ$-invariant Borel probabilities that maximize the integral of a given locally Hölder continuous potential $ A : \boldsymbolΣ \to \mathbb R $. Under certain conditions, we are able to show not only that $A$-maximizing probabilities do exist, but also that they are characterized by the fact their support lies actually in a particular Markov subshift on a finite alphabet. To that end, we make use of objects dual to …
We study the scaling scenery of Gibbs measures for subshifts of finite type on self-conformal fractals and applications to Falconer's distance set problem and dimensions of projections. Our analysis includes hyperbolic Julia sets, limit sets of Schottky groups and graph-directed self-similar sets.
The self-similar structure of the attracting subshift of a primitive substitution is carried over to the limit set of the repelling tree in the boundary of Outer Space of the corresponding irreducible outer automorphism of a free group. Thus, this repelling tree is self-similar (in the sense of graph directed constructions). Its Hausdorff dimension is computed. This reveals the fractal nature of the attracting tree in the boundary of Outer Space of an irreducible outer automorphism of a free group.
Let $G$ be a group and $ϕ:H\to G$ be a contracting homomorphism from a subgroup $H<G$ of finite index. V.Nekrashevych [25] associated with the pair $(G,ϕ)$ the limit dynamical system $(\lims,\si)$ and the limit $G$-space $\limGs$ together with the covering $\cup_{g\in G}\tile\cdot g$ by the tile $\tile$. We develop the theory of self-similar measures $μ$ on these limit spaces. It is shown that $(\lims,\si,μ)$ is conjugated to the one-sided Bernoulli shift. Using sofic subshifts we prove that the tile $\tile$ has integer measure and we give an algorithmic way to compute it. In addition we give …
In this survey of the spectral properties of substitution dynamical systems we consider primitive aperiodic substitutions and associated dynamical systems: ${\mathbb Z}$-actions and ${\mathbb R}$-actions, the latter viewed as tiling flows. Our focus is on the continuous part of the spectrum. For ${\mathbb Z}$-actions the maximal spectral type can be represented in terms of matrix Riesz products, whereas for tiling flows, the local dimension of the spectral measure is governed by the spectral cocycle. We give references to complete proofs and emphasize ideas and connections.
