Weakly and Strongly Aperiodic Subshifts of Finite Type on Baumslag-Solitar Groups

New version with better proofs. Removed a subsection on "shift-similar" substitutions, as the definition was not as interesting as we first thought. Most of the results of this subsection were therefore not that helpful in understanding substitutions that can be "embedded" into BS(1,n)
We study the periodicity of subshifts of finite type (SFT) on Baumslag-Solitar groups. We show that for residually finite Baumslag-Solitar groups there exist both strongly and weakly-but-not-strongly aperiodic SFTs. In particular, this shows that unlike $\mathbb{Z}^2$, but like $\mathbb{Z}^3$, strong and weak aperiodic SFTs are different classes of SFTs in residually finite BS groups. More precisely, we prove that a weakly aperiodic SFT on BS(m,n) due to Aubrun and Kari is, in fact, strongly aperiodic on BS(1,n); and weakly but not strongly aperiodic on any other BS(m,n). In addition, we exhibit an SFT which is weakly but not strongly aperiodic on BS(1,n); and we show that there exists a strongly aperiodic SFT on BS(n,n).
We present a technique to lift some tilings of the discrete hyperbolic plane -- tilings defined by a 1D substitution -- into a zero entropy subshift of finite type (SFT) on non-abelian amenable Baumslag-Solitar groups $BS(1,n)$ for $n\geq2$. For well chosen hyperbolic tilings, this SFT is also aperiodic and minimal. As an application we construct a strongly aperiodic SFT on $BS(1,n)$ with a hierarchical structure, which is an analogue of Robinson's construction on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ or Goodman-Strauss's on $\mathbb{H}_2$.
In our article in MCU'2013 we state the the Domino problem is undecidable for all Baumslag-Solitar groups $BS(m,n)$, and claim that the proof is a direct adaptation of the construction of a weakly aperiodic subshift of finite type for $BS(m,n)$ given in the paper. In this addendum, we clarify this point and give a detailed proof of the undecidability result. We assume the reader is already familiar with the article in MCU'2013.
To an ergodic, essentially free and measure-preserving action of a non-amenable Baumslag-Solitar group on a standard probability space, a flow is associated. The isomorphism class of the flow is shown to be an invariant of such actions of Baumslag-Solitar groups under weak orbit equivalence. Results on groups which are measure equivalent to Baumslag-Solitar groups are also provided.
A measure-preserving action of a discrete countable group on a standard probability space is called stable if the associated equivalence relation is isomorphic to its direct product with the ergodic hyperfinite equivalence relation of type II_1. We show that any Baumslag-Solitar group has such an ergodic, free and stable action. It follows that any Baumslag-Solitar group is measure equivalent to its direct product with any amenable group. The same property is obtained for the inner amenable groups of Vaes.
Call a group action on a topological space \emph{biminimal} if for any points $x,y\in X$ there exists a group element taking $x$ arbitrarily close to $y$ and whose inverse takes $y$ arbitrarily close to $x$. A symbolic encoding of the Thue-Morse dynamical system is given, in terms of $ω$-automata. It is used to prove that the Thue-Morse dynamical system is minimal but not biminimal. The $ω$-automata also establish a link between Nekrashevych's presentation of limit spaces and solenoids with a construction described by Vershik and Solomyak.
We look at constructions of aperiodic SFTs on fundamental groups of graph of groups. In particular we prove that all generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups (GBS) admit a strongly aperiodic SFT. Our proof is based on a structural theorem by Whyte and on two constructions of strongly aperiodic SFTs on $\mathbb{F}_n\times \mathbb{Z}$ and $BS(m,n)$ of our own. Our two constructions rely on a path-folding technique that lifts an SFT on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ inside an SFT on $\mathbb{F}_n\times \mathbb{Z}$ or an SFT on the hyperbolic plane inside an SFT on $BS(m,n)$. In the case of $\mathbb{F}_n\times \mathbb…
Let BS(n_1,m_1) $\curvearrowright$ X_1 and BS(n_2,m_2) $\curvearrowright$ X_2 be two ergodic essentially free probability measure preserving actions of nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups whose canonical almost normal abelian subgroups act aperiodically. We prove that an isomorphism between the corresponding crossed product II_1 factors forces BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,m_2) when |n_1| $\neq$ |m_1| and BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,$\pm$m_2) when |n_1| = |m_1|. This improves an orbit equivalence rigidity result obtained by Houdayer and Raum.
Following previous work, where representations of $BS(1,n)$ by planar orientation preserving homeomorphisms with linear diagonalizable conjugating element was studied, we consider the elliptic and parabolic cases. As an application, we prove that there are no faithful representations of $BS(1,n)$ by toral homeomorphisms with conjugating element the Dehn twist map.
Let $BS(1, n)=< a, b | aba^{-1} = b^n >$ be the solvable Baumslag-Solitar group, where $ n\geq 2$. It is known that B(1, n) is isomorphic to the group generated by the two affine maps of the line : $f_0(x) = x + 1$ and $h_0(x) = nx $. The action on $S^1 = \RR \cup {\infty}$ generated by these two affine maps $f_0$ and $h_0 $ is called the standard affine one. We prove that any representation of BS(1,n) into $Diff^1(S^1)$ is (up to a finite index subgroup) semiconjugated to the standard affine action.
Let $BS(1,n)= \langle a,b : a b a ^{-1} = b ^n\rangle$ be the solvable Baumslag-Solitar group for $n \geq 2$. We study representations of $BS(1, n)$ on the plane by orientation preserving homeomorphisms, assuming that $a$ acts as a linear map and $b$ as a map with bounded displacement. We find that the possibilities for a faithful action depend greatly on the Jordan canonical form of the map $h$ defined by the action of $a$. In case $h$ is diagonalizable over $\mathbb R$, we shall give examples or prove rigidity theorems depending on the eigenvalues. We also show some rigidity in the cases whe…
Let $BS(1,n)= <a,b : a b a ^{-1} = b ^n>$ be the solvable Baumslag-Solitar group, where $n \geq 2$. We study representations of $BS(1, n)$ by homeomorphisms of closed surfaces with (pseudo-)Anosov elements. That is, we consider a closed surface $S$, and homeomorphisms $f, h: S \to S$ such that $h f h^{-1} = f^n$, for some $ n\geq 2$. It is known that $f$ (or some power of $f$) must be homotopic to the identity. Suppose that $h$ is pseudo-Anosov with stretch factor $λ>1$. We show that $<f,h>$ is not a faithful representation of $BS(1, n)$ if $λ> n$. Moreover, we show that there are no faithful …
We consider $f, h$ homeomorphims generating a faithful $BS(1,n)$-action on a closed surface $S$, that is, $h f h^{-1} = f^n$, for some $ n\geq 2$. According to \cite{GL}, after replacing $f$ by a suitable iterate if necessary, we can assume that there exists a minimal set $Λ$ of the action, included in $Fix(f)$. Here, we suppose that $f$ and $h$ are $C^1$ in neighbourhood of $Λ$ and any point $x\inΛ$ admits an $h$-unstable manifold $W^u(x)$. Using Bonatti's techniques, we prove that either there exists an integer $N$ such that $W^u(x)$ is included in $Fix(f^N)$ or there is a lower bound for th…
Let $BS(1,n) =< a, b \ | \ aba^{-1} = b^n >$ be the solvable Baumslag-Solitar group, where $ n\geq 2$. It is known that BS(1,n) is isomorphic to the group generated by the two affine maps of the real line: $f_0(x) = x + 1$ and $h_0(x) = nx $. This paper deals with the dynamics of actions of BS(1,n) on closed orientable surfaces. We exhibit a smooth BS(1,n) action without finite orbits on $\TT ^2$, we study the dynamical behavior of it and of its $C^1$-pertubations and we prove that it is not locally rigid. We develop a general dynamical study for faithful topological BS(1,n)-actions on closed …
For an ascending HNN-extension $G*_ψ$ of a finitely generated abelian group $G$, we study how a synchronization between the geometry of the group and weak periodicity of a configuration in $\mathcal{A}^{G*_ψ}$ forces global constraints on it, as well as in subshifts containing it. A particular case are Baumslag-Solitar groups $\mathrm{BS}(1,N)$, $N\ge2$, for which our results imply that a $\mathrm{BS}(1,N)$-SFT which contains a configuration with period $a^{N^\ell}$, $\ell\ge 0$, must contain a strongly periodic configuration with monochromatic $\mathbb{Z}$-sections. Then we study proper $n$-c…
An analog of the Baumslag-Solitar group BS(1,k) naturally acts on the sphere by conformal transformations. The action is not locally rigid in higher dimension, but exhibits a weak form of local rigidity. More precisely, any perturbation preserves a smooth conformal structure.
