Merons are nontrivial topological spin textures highly relevant for many phenomena in solid state physics. Despite their importance, direct observation of such vortex quasiparticles is scarce and has been limited to a few complex materials. Here we show the emergence of merons and antimerons in recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) CrCl3 at zero magnetic field. We show their entire evolution from pair creation, their diffusion over metastable domain walls, and collision leading to large magnetic monodomains. Both quasiparticles are stabilized spontaneously during cooling at regions where in-plane magnetic frustration takes place. Their dynamics is determined by the interplay between the strong in-plane dipolar interactions and the weak out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy stabilising a vortex core within a radius of 8-10 nm. Our results push the boundary to what is currently known about non-trivial spin structures in 2D magnets and open exciting opportunities to control magnetic domains via topological quasiparticles.
Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_2$ is a centrosymmetric, layered van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet that displays Curie temperatures $T_c$ (270-330 K) that are within the useful range for spintronic applications. However, little is known about the interplay between its topological spin textures (e.g., merons, skyrmions) with technologically relevant transport properties such as the topological Hall effect (THE), or topological thermal transport. Here, we show via high-resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy that merons and anti-meron pairs coexist with Néel skyrmions in Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_2$ over a wide…
The recent experimental confirmation of a transformation between meron and skyrmion topological spin textures in the chiral magnet Co$_8$Zn$_9$Mn$_3$ [S.-Z. Lin et al., Phys. Rev. B 91, 224407 (2015); X. Z. Yu et al., Nature 564, 95 (2018)] confirms that the skyrmion crystals discovered in 2009 [S. Mühlbauer et al., Science 323, 915 (2009)] are just the tip of the iceberg. Crystals of topological textures, including skyrmions, merons, vortices, and monopoles, can be stabilized by combining simple physical ingredients, such as lattice symmetry, frustration, and spin anisotropy. The current chal…
We reveal the meron and antimeron spin textures in momentum space in a photonic crystal slab. These spin textures in momentum space have not been previously noted either in electronic or photonic systems. Breaking the inversion symmetry of a honeycomb photonic crystal gaps out the Dirac cones at the corners of Brillouin zone. The spin textures of photonic bands near the gaps exhibit a meron or antimeron. Unlike the electronic systems, the spin texture of the photonic modes manifests directly in the polarization of the leakage radiation, as the Dirac points can be above the light line. The spin…
In this paper we report calculations of some pseudospin textures for bilayer quantum hall systems with filling factor $ ν=1$. The textures we study are isolated single meron solutions. Meron solutions have already been studied at great length by others by minimising the microscopic Hamiltonian between microscopic trial wavefunctions. Our approach is somewhat different. We calculate them by numerically solving the nonlinear integro -differential equations arising from extremisation of the effective action for pseudospin textures. Our results can be viewed as augmenting earlier results and provi…
As a fundamental type of topological spin textures in two-dimensional (2D) magnets, a magnetic meron carries half-integer topological charge and forms a pair with its antithesis to keep the stability in materials. However, it is challenging to quantitatively calculate merons and their dynamics by using the widely used continuum model because of the characteristic highly inhomogeneous spin textures. In this work, we develop a discrete method to address the concentrated spin structures around the core of merons. We reveal a logarithmic-scale interaction between merons when their distance is larg…
Noncollinear spin textures in low-dimensional magnetic systems have been studied for decades because of their extraordinary properties and promising applications derived from the chirality and topological nature. However, material realizations of topological spin states are still limited. Employing first-principles and Monte Carlo simulations, we propose that monolayer chromium trichloride (CrCl3) can be a promising candidate for observing the vortex/antivortex type of topological defects, so-called merons. The numbers of vortices and antivortices are found to be the same, maintaining an overa…
We provide unambiguous theoretical evidence for the formation of correlation-induced isolated merons in rotationally-symmetric quantum dots. Our calculations rely on neither the lowest-Landau-level approximation, nor on the maximum-density-droplet approximation, nor on the existence of a spin-polarized state. For experimentally accessible system parameters, unbound merons condense in the ground state at magnetic fields as low as $B^* = 0.2$ T and for as few as N = 3 confined fermions. The four-fold degenerate ground-state at $B^*$ corresponds to four orthogonal merons $\ket{QC}$ characterized …
The combined effect of a lateral square superlattice potential and the Coulomb interaction on the ground state of a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field is studied for different rational values of $Γ$, the inverse of the number of flux quanta per unit cell of the external potential, at filling factor $ν=1$ in Landau level $N=0.$ When Landau level mixing and disorder effects are neglected, increasing the strength $W_{0}$ of the potential induces a transition, at a critical strength $W_{0}^{\left( c\right) },$ from a uniform and fully spin polarized state to a two-dimen…
We investigate two kinds of coreless vortices with axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric configurations in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Starting from the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional in a rotating frame, we derive a nonlinear sigma model generalized to the two-component condensates. In terms of a pseudospin representation, an axisymmetric vortex and a nonaxisymmetric one correspond to spin textures referred to as a "skyrmion" and a "meron-pair", respectively. A variational method is used to investigate the dependence of the sizes of the stable spin textures on system para…
We find closed-form solution of the Euler equation for a chiral magnet in terms of a skyrmion or a meron depending on the relative strengths of magnetic anisotropy and magnetic field. We show that the relevant length scales for these solutions primarily depend on the strengths of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction through its ratios, respectively, with magnetic field and magnetic anisotropy. We thus unambiguously determine the parameter dependencies on the radius of the topological structures particularly of the skyrmions, showing an excellent agreement with experiments and first-principle stud…
We present a promising route to realize spontaneous magnetic order on the surface of a 3D topological insulator by applying a superlattice potential. The superlattice potential creates tunable van Hove singularities, which, when combined with strong spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb repulsion give rise to a topological meron lattice spin texture. The periodicity of this designer meron lattice can be tuned by varying the periodicity of the superlattice potential. We characterize the magnetic order using Ginzburg-Landau theory and show that the magnetic transition temperature reaches experimentall…
In this paper we discuss bimeron pseudo spin textures for double layer quantum hall systems with filling factor $ν=1$. Bimerons are excitations corresponding to bound pairs of merons and anti-merons. Bimeron solutions have already been studied at great length by other groups by minimising the microsopic Hamiltonian between microscopic trial wavefunctions. Here we calculate them by numerically solving coupled nonlinear partial differential equations arising from extremisation of the effective action for pseudospin textures. We also calculate the different contributions to the energy of our bime…
Meron-mediated phase transitions in quasi-two-dimensional chiral magnets with easy-plane anisotropy: successive transformation of the hexagonal skyrmion lattice into the square lattice and into the tilted FM state
We study the phase transitions induced by a lateral superlattice potential (a metallic grid) placed on top of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG)formed in a semiconductor quantum well. In a quantizing magnetic field and at filling factor $ν=1,$ the ground state of the 2DEG depends on the strength $V_{g}$ of the superlattice potential as well as on the number of flux quanta piercing the unit cell of the external potential. It was recently shown[1] that in the case of a square lateral superlattice, the potential modulates both the electronic and spin density and in some range of $V_{g}$, the g…
The control of the magnetic properties of shapeable devices and the manipulation of flexible structures by external magnetic fields is a keystone of future magnetoelectronics-based devices. This work studies the elastic properties of a magnetoelastic nanodisc that hosts a meron as the magnetic state and can be deformed from structures with positive to negative Gaussian curvature. We show that the winding number of the hosted meron is crucial to determine the curvature sign of the stable obtained shape. Additionally, we show that the optimum curvature reached by the nanodisc depends on geometri…
Using micromagnetic simulations, we have modelled the formation of imprinted merons and anti-merons in cobalt overlayers of different thickness (1-8 nm), stabilised by interfacial exchange with antiferromagnetic vortices in $α$-Fe2O3. Structures similar to those observed experimentally could be obtained with reasonable exchange parameters, also in the presence of surface roughness. We produce simulated meron|antimeron images by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) centre microscopy, and established signatures of these topological structures in different experimental confi…
Merons and skyrmions are classical topological solitons. However, they will become quantum mechanical objects when their sizes are of the order of nanometers. Recently, quantum computation based on nanoscale skyrmions was proposed. Here, we propose to use a nanoscale meron in a magnetic nanodisk as a qubit, where the up and down directions of the core spin are assigned to be the qubit states $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$. First, we show numerically that a meron with the radius containing only $7$ spins can be stabilized in a ferromagnetic nanodisk classically. Then, we show theoretically that un…
We study the equilibrium phase diagram of ultrathin chiral magnets with easy-plane anisotropy $A$. The vast triangular skyrmion lattice phase that is stabilized by an external magnetic field evolves continuously as a function of increasing $A$ into a regime in which nearest-neighbor skyrmions start overlapping with each other. This overlap leads to a continuous reduction of the skyrmion number from its quantized value $Q=1$ and to the emergence of antivortices at the center of the triangles formed by nearest-neighbor skyrmions. The antivortices also carry a small "skyrmion number" $Q_A \ll 1$ …
Topological spin textures such as skyrmions hold high potential for use as magnetically active elements in diverse near-future applications. While skyrmions in metallic multilayers attract great attention in this context, unleashing the myriad potential of skyrmions for various applications requires the discovery and customization of alternative host system paradigms. Here we developed and applied a chemical method to synthesize octahedral particles of the chiral insulating skyrmion host Cu2OSeO3 with both narrow size distribution, and tailored dimensions approaching the nanoscale. Combining m…
Polar skyrmions are predicted to emerge from the interplay of elastic, electrostatic and gradient energies, in contrast to the key role of the anti-symmetric Dzyalozhinskii-Moriya interaction in magnetic skyrmions. With the discovery of topologically-stable polar skyrmions, it is of both fundamental and practical interest to understand the microscopic nature and the possibility of temperature- and strain-driven phase transitions in ensembles of such polar skyrmions. Here, we explore the reversible transition from a skyrmion state (topological charge of -1) to a two-dimensional, tetratic lattic…
Ultrafast laser excitations provide an efficient and low-power consumption alternative since different magnetic properties and topological spin states can be triggered and manipulated at the femtosecond (fs) regime. However, it is largely unknown whether laser excitations already used in data information platforms can manipulate the magnetic properties of recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials. Here we show that ultrashort laser pulses (30$-$85 fs) can not only manipulate magnetic domains of 2D-XY CrCl$_3$ ferromagnets, but also induce the formation and control …
In order to address many of the challenges and bottlenecks currently experienced by traditional charge based technologies, various alternatives are being actively explored to provide potential solutions of device miniaturization and scaling in the more-than-MOORE era. Amongst these alternatives, spintronics physics and devices have recently attracted a rapidly increasing interest by exploiting the additional degree of electron's spins. For example, magnetic domain-wall racetrack-memory and logic devices have been realized via manipulating domain-wall motion. As compared to domain-wall based de…
In this paper we use the language of real meromorphic differentials from the theory of Klein surfaces to describe the metastable states of multiply connected planar ferromagnetic nanoelements which minimize the exchange energy and have no side magnetic charges. Those solutions still have enough internal degrees of freedom which may serve as the Ritz parameters for minimization of further relevant energy terms or as the dynamical variables for the adiabatic approach. The nontrivial topology of the magnet itself brings us to several effects first described for the annulus and observed in the exp…
The presence of an exchange field in topological insulators reveals novel spin related phenomena derived from the combination of topology and magnetism. In the present work we show the controlled occurrence of either metallic or gapped topological Dirac states at the interface between ultrathin Cr films and the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ surface. The opening and closing of the gap at the Dirac point is caused by the spin reorientation transitions arising in the Cr films. We find that atom thin layers of Cr adhered to Bi$_2$Se$_3$ surfaces present a magnetic ground state with ferromagnetic planes coupled ant…
The manipulation of topologically protected field configurations, already predicted and experimentally observed in non-centrosymmetric magnets, as skyrmions, merons and antimerons could definitely have potential applications in logic gate operations as carriers of information. Here, we present and elaborate a proof of concept on how to construct a three-input non-canonical majority gate on a kagome ferromagnet lacking inversion symmetry. By taking advantage of the existence of edge modes in a Kagome magnet, it is possible to create topological excitations as merons and antimerons at the edge o…
The intrinsic magnetism observed in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials provides a unique opportunity for exploring the 2D topological magnetic textures, in particular skyrmionic magnetic textures (SMTs) including skyrmion and its topological equivalents. Since the experimental discovery of skyrmions in the 2D vdW materials and their heterostructures, a critical challenge lies in the control of these SMTs to translate their intriguing features into spintronic applications. Here, we review the recent experimental and theoretical progresses on the modulations of SMTs in 2D vdW mon…
At interface of the classical and quantum physics Maxwell and Schrödinger equations describe how optical fields drive and control electronic phenomena at THz or PHz frequencies and on ultra-small scales to enable lightwave electronics. Light striking a metal surface triggers electric field-electron particle/wave interactions to coherently imprint and transfer its attributes on the attosecond time scale. Here we create and image by ultrafast photoemission electron microscopy a new quasiparticle of optical field-collective electron interaction where the design of geometrical phase creates a plas…
Spin wave and magnetic texture are two elementary excitations in magnetic systems, and their interaction leads to rich magnetic phenomena. By describing the spin wave and the magnetic texture using their own collective coordinates, we find that they interact as classical particles traveling in mutual electromagnetic fields. Based on this unified collective coordinate model, we find that both skew scattering and side jump may occur as spin wave passing through magnetic textures. The skew scattering is associated with the magnetic topology of the texture, while the side jump is correlated to the…
Using a semiclassical Green's function formalism, we discover the emergence of chiral and topological orbital magnetism in two-dimensional chiral spin textures by explicitly finding the corrections to the orbital magnetization, proportional to the powers of the gradients of the texture. We show that in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, the resulting orbital moment can be understood as the electronic response to the emergent magnetic field associated with the real-space Berry curvature. By referring to the Rashba model, we demonstrate that by tuning the parameters of surface systems the engin…
External magnetic field, temperature, and spin-polarized current are usually employed to create and control nanoscale vortex-like spin configurations such as magnetic skyrmions. Although these methods have proven successful, they are not energy-efficient due to high power consumption and dissipation. Coupling between magnetic properties and mechanical deformation, the magnetoelastic (MEL) effect, offers a novel approach to energy-efficient control of magnetism at the nanoscale. It is of great interest in the context of ever-decreasing length scales of electronic and spintronic devices. Therefo…
During the last years, topologically protected collective modes of the magnetization have called much attention. Among these, skyrmions and merons have been the object of intense study. In particular, topological skyrmions are objects with an integer skyrmion number $Q$ while merons have a half-integer skyrmion charge $q$. In this work, we consider a $Q=1$ skyrmion, composed by a meron and an antimeron (bimeron), displacing in a ferromagnetic racetrack, disputing a long-distance competition with its more famous counterpart, the typical $Q=1$ cylindrically symmetrical skyrmion. Both types of to…
We develop the hydrodynamical theory of collinear spin currents coupled to magnetization dynamics in metallic ferromagnets. The collective spin density couples to the spin current through a U(1) Berry-phase gauge field determined by the local texture and dynamics of the magnetization. We determine phenomenologically the dissipative corrections to the equation of motion for the electronic current, which consist of a dissipative spin-motive force generated by magnetization dynamics and a magnetic texture-dependent resistivity tensor. The reciprocal dissipative, adiabatic spin torque on the magne…
Topological spin textures, like skyrmions, have significant potential for spintronics applications. The main purpose of this work is to study further the topological spin textures on the discrete lattice with magnetic fields. In this work, we study a classical rotated Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, bond-dependent anisotropy and easy-axis anisotropy on the honeycomb lattice via Monte Carlo simulations. We mainly focus on phase diagrams with magnetic fields, especially on the non-trivial phases only existing with fields. The results demonstrate the emergence of field-in…
A vortex molecule is predicted in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates whose internal hyperfine states are coupled coherently by an external field. A vortex in one component and that in the other are connected by a domain wall of the relative phase, constituting a "vortex molecule", which features a nonaxisymmetric (pseudo)spin texture with a pair of merons. The binding mechanism of the vortex molecule is discussed based on a generalized nonlinear sigma model and a variational ansatz. The anisotropy of vortex molecules is caused by the difference in the scattering lengths, yielding…
