External magnetic field, temperature, and spin-polarized current are usually employed to create and control nanoscale vortex-like spin configurations such as magnetic skyrmions. Although these methods have proven successful, they are not energy-efficient due to high power consumption and dissipation. Coupling between magnetic properties and mechanical deformation, the magnetoelastic (MEL) effect, offers a novel approach to energy-efficient control of magnetism at the nanoscale. It is of great interest in the context of ever-decreasing length scales of electronic and spintronic devices. Therefore, it is desirable to establish a comprehensive framework capable of predicting the effects of mechanical stress and enabling deterministic control of magnetic textures and skyrmions. In this work, using an advanced scheme of multiscale simulations and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy measurements we demonstrate deterministic control of topological magnetic textures and skyrmion creation in thin films and racetracks of chiral magnets. Our investigation considers not only uniaxial but also biaxial stress, which is ubiquitous in thin-film devices. The biaxial stress, rather than the uniaxial one, was shown to be more efficient to create or annihilate skyrmions when the MEL coefficient and strain have the same or opposite signs, respectively. It was also demonstrated to be a viable way to stabilize skyrmions and to control their current-induced motion in racetrack memory. Our results open prospects for deployment of mechanical stress to create novel topological spin textures, including merons, and in control and optimization of skyrmion-based devices.
Magnetic skyrmions $-$ localized chiral spin structures $-$ show great promise for spintronic applications. The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials opened new opportunities for exploring such topological spin structures in atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials. Despite recent progress in stabilizing metastable skyrmions in 2D magnets, their diameters are still beyond 100~nm and their lifetime, which is essential for applications, has not been explored yet. Here, using first-principles calculations and atomistic spin simulations, we predict that compressive mecha…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological magnetic spin structures exhibiting particle-like behaviour. They are of strong interest from a fundamental viewpoint and for application, where they have potential to act as information carriers in future low-power computing technologies. Importantly, skyrmions have high physical stability because of topological protection. However, they have potential to deform according to their local energy environment. Here we demonstrate that, in regions of high exchange energy density, skyrmions may exhibit such extreme deformation that spontaneous merging with nearest…
Mechanical straining of skyrmion hosting materials has previously demonstrated increased phase stability through the expansion of the skyrmion equilibrium pocket. Additionally, metastable skyrmions can be generated via rapid field-cooling to form significant skyrmion populations at low temperatures. Using small-angle x-ray scattering and x-ray holographic imaging on a thermally strained 200 nm thick FeGe lamella, we observe temperature-induced strain effects on the structure and metastability of the skyrmion lattice. We find that in this sample orientation (H || [1 1 0]) with no strain, metast…
Strain manipulation of the magnetic domains, such as the stripe domains and skyrmions, has attracted considerable attention because of its potential applications for magnetic logic and memory devices. Here, utilizing phase-field modeling, we demonstrate the deterministic modulation of the orientation and the configuration of the stripe domains and skyrmions by using a uniaxial strain. The reorientation of the stripe domains can be caused by a suitable strain, and the direction of the reorientated domains is determined by the direction of the applied uniaxial strain and the type of domain walls…
Polar skyrmions are predicted to emerge from the interplay of elastic, electrostatic and gradient energies, in contrast to the key role of the anti-symmetric Dzyalozhinskii-Moriya interaction in magnetic skyrmions. With the discovery of topologically-stable polar skyrmions, it is of both fundamental and practical interest to understand the microscopic nature and the possibility of temperature- and strain-driven phase transitions in ensembles of such polar skyrmions. Here, we explore the reversible transition from a skyrmion state (topological charge of -1) to a two-dimensional, tetratic lattic…
Magnetic skyrmions are localized particle-like nontrivial swirls that are promising in building high-performance topological spintronic devices. The read-out functions in skyrmionic devices require the translation of magnetic skyrmions to electrical signals. Here, we report combined real-space magnetic imaging and anisotropic magnetoresistance studies on dipolar skyrmions. A single skyrmion chain and single skyrmion are observed using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy imaging. Meanwhile, the field, helicity, and skyrmion count dependence of anisotropic magnetoresistance of the Fe3Sn2 na…
Recently, great effort has been devoted to the search for two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials with inherent strong Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, through a first-principles approach, we systematically investigate the effect of biaxial strain on the DMI, the Heisenberg exchange interaction, and the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of Janus Cr$_{2}$X$_{3}$Y$_{3}$ (X, Y = Cl, Br, I, X $\neq$ Y) monolayers. Both DMI and MAE can be significantly enhanced by tensile strain, while a reversal of the chirality of DMI in Cr$_{2}$Cl$_{3}$Br$_{3}$ and a switch of MAE from off-pla…
We study the equilibrium and dynamical properties of skyrmions in thin films of chiral magnets with oblique magnetic field. The shape of an individual skyrmion is non-circular and the skyrmion density decreases with the tilt angle from the normal of films. As a result, the interaction between two skyrmions depends on the relative angle between them in addition to their separation. The triangular lattice of skyrmions under a perpendicular magnetic field is distorted into a centered rectangular lattice for a tilted magnetic field. For a low skyrmion density, skyrmions form a chain like structure…
Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions have interesting static and transport properties that make them candidates for future spintronic devices. Control and manipulation of the size and behavior of skyrmions is thus of crucial importance. Using a Ginzburg-Landau approach, we show theoretically that skyrmions and skyrmion lattices can be stabilized by a spatial modulation of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in a thin film of centro-symmetric ferromagnet. Remarkably, the skyrmion size is determined by the ratio of the exchange length and the period of the spatial modulation of the anisotropy, at variance …
A detailed analytic and numerical analysis of the interaction between two bubble skyrmions has been carried out. Results from micromagnetic calculations show a strong dependence of the parameters of the skyrmion magnetic profile as a function of the magnetostatic interaction. The magnetic core and edge-width sizes of the skyrmion increase or decrease depending on the relative position between the skyrmions and the uniaxial perpendicular anisotropy. In particular, when a magnetic disk is over another, there is a transition from a Bloch-like skyrmion configuration to a Néel-like skyrmion configu…
In our proof-of-principle study we examine the influence of skyrmions on magnetoresistive transport. In particular, we show that magnetic tunnel junctions are a technologically appealing and promising way for electrical detection of non-collinear magnetic structures. The calculated effect is shown to originate from scattering between different k-states and cannot be identified through densities of states alone. Our results suggest that the detection efficiency strongly depends on the utilized materials.
Magnetic skyrmions, as a whirling spin texture with axisymmetry, cannot be propelled by a uniform magnetic field. Therefore, reported skyrmion motions have been induced using other sorts of stimuli; typically, electric currents in magnetic metals as well as spin waves, thermal gradient, and field gradient have manifested their ability to drive skyrmion motion. Here, we demonstrate, through micromagnetic simulations and analytically, that magnetic skyrmions can be displaced by a uniform perpendicular magnetic field via a domain-wall (DW) mediator. For a fixed field strength, the velocity of a s…
The magnetic skyrmionium is a skyrmion-like structure but carries a zero net skyrmion number, which can be used as a building block for non-volatile information processing devices. Here, we study the dynamics of a magnetic skyrmionium driven by propagating spin waves. It is found that the skyrmionium can be effectively driven into motion by spin waves showing tiny skyrmion Hall effect, of which the mobility is much better than that of the skyrmion at the same condition. We also show that the skyrmionium mobility depends on the nanotrack width and damping coefficient, and can be controlled by a…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates for future information technology. Here, we present a micromagnetic study of isolated skyrmions and skyrmion clusters in ferromagnetic nanodisks driven by the spin-polarized current with spatially varied polarization. The current-driven skyrmion clusters can be either dynamic steady or static, depending on the spatially varied polarization profile. For the dynamic steady state, the skyrmion cluster moves in a circle in the nanodisk, while for the static state, the skyrmion cluster is static. The frequency of the circular motion of skyrmion is also st…
We consider magnetization configurations at chiral magnet (CM)/ferromagnet (FM) heterostructures. In the CM, magnetic skyrmions and spin helices emerge due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which then penetrate into the adjacent FM. However, because the non-uniform magnetization structures are energetically unfavorable in the FM, the penetrated magnetization structures are deformed, resulting in exotic three-dimensional configurations, such as skyrmion cones, sideways skyrmions, and twisted helices and skyrmions. We discuss the stability of possible magnetization configurations at the …
We report a detailed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study of the skyrmion lattice phase of MnSi under compressive and tensile strain. In particular, we demonstrate that tensile strain applied in the skyrmion lattice plane, perpendicular to the magnetic field, acts to destabilize the skyrmion lattice phase. This experiment was enabled by our development of a versatile strain cell, unique in its ability to select the application of either tensile or compressive strain in-situ by using two independent helium-actuated copper pressure transducers, whose design has been optimized for magnetic…
Multiple magnetic skyrmion phases add an additional degree of freedom for skyrmion based ultrahigh-density spin memory devices. Extending the field to two-dimensional van der Waals magnets is a rewarding challenge, where the realizable degree of freedoms (e.g. thickness, twisting angle and electrical gating) and high skyrmion density result in intriguing new properties and enhanced functionality. We report a van der Waals interface, formed by two 2D ferromagnets Cr2Ge2Te6 and Fe3GeTe2 with a Curie temperature of ~65 K and ~205 K, respectively, hosting two groups of magnetic skyrmions. Two sets…
Voltage manipulation of skyrmions is a promising path towards low-energy spintronic devices. Here, voltage effects on skyrmions in a GdOx/Gd/Co/Pt heterostructure are observed experimentally. The results show that the skyrmion density can be both enhanced and depleted by the application of an electric field, along with the ability, at certain magnetic fields to completely switch the skyrmion state on and off. Further, a zero magnetic field skyrmion state can be stablized under a negative bias voltage using a defined voltage and magnetic field sequence. The voltage effects measured here occur o…
We find closed-form solution of the Euler equation for a chiral magnet in terms of a skyrmion or a meron depending on the relative strengths of magnetic anisotropy and magnetic field. We show that the relevant length scales for these solutions primarily depend on the strengths of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction through its ratios, respectively, with magnetic field and magnetic anisotropy. We thus unambiguously determine the parameter dependencies on the radius of the topological structures particularly of the skyrmions, showing an excellent agreement with experiments and first-principle stud…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates for future storage devices with a large data density. A great variety of materials have been found that host skyrmions up to the room-temperature regime. Lorentz microscopy, usually performed in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), is one of the most important tools for characterizing skyrmion samples in real space. Using numerical calculations, this work relates the phase contrast in a TEM to the actual magnetization profile of an isolated Neel or Bloch skyrmion, the two most common skyrmion types. Within the framework of the used skyrmion mode…
A magnetic skyrmionium is a nontopological soliton, which has a doughnut-like out-of-plane spin texture in thin films, and can be phenomenologically viewed as a coalition of two topological magnetic skyrmions with opposite topological numbers. Due to its zero topological number ($Q=0$) and doughnut-like structure, the skyrmionium has its distinctive characteristics as compared to the skyrmion with $Q=\pm 1$. Here we systematically study the generation, manipulation and motion of a skyrmionium in ultrathin magnetic nanostructures by applying a magnetic field or a spin-polarized current. It is f…
We study a two-dimensional electron gas exchanged-coupled to a system of classical magnetic ions. For large Rashba spin-orbit coupling a single electron can become self-trapped in a skyrmion spin texture self-induced in the magnetic ions system. This new quasiparticle carries electrical and topological charge as well as a large spin, and we named it as magnetic skyrmionic polaron. We study the range of parameters; temperature, exchange coupling, Rashba coupling and magnetic field, for which the magnetic skyrmionic polaron is the fundamental state in the system. The dynamics of this quasipartic…
A stable skyrmion, representing the smallest realizable magnetic texture, could be an ideal element for ultra-dense magnetic memories. Here, we review recent progress in the field of skyrmionics, which is concerned with studies of tiny whirls of magnetic configurations for novel memory and logic applications, with a particular emphasis on antiskyrmions. Magnetic antiskyrmions represent analogs of skyrmions with opposite topological charge. Just like skyrmions, antiskyrmions can be stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, as has been demonstrated in a recent experiment. Here, we emp…
The magnetic skyrmion is a nanoscale topological object characterized by the winding of the magnetic moments, appearing in magnetic materials with broken inversion symmetry. Because of its low current threshold for driving, the skyrmions have been intensely studied toward novel storage applications by using electron-beam, X-ray, and visible light microscopies. Here, we show that the skyrmions can be imaged via thermoelectric signals of spin-caloritronic phenomena in combination with focused heating. We applied a local temperature gradient to a CoFeB/Ta/W multilayer film with scanning a heating…
We show theoretically by numerically solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with a classical spin model on a two-dimensional system that both magnetic skyrmions and skyrmion lattices can be moved with microwave magnetic fields. The mechanism is enabled by breaking the axial symmetry of the skyrmion, for example through application of a static in-plane external field. The net velocity of the skyrmion depends on the frequency and amplitude of the microwave fields as well as the strength of the in-plane field. The maximum velocity is found where the frequency of the microwave coincides with…
Theoretical investigation demonstrates that the composite bilayer (i.e., chiral-magnetic/ferroelectric bilayer) offers the possibility of electric-induced magnetic Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{94}, 014311 (2016)]. In this Article, we propose a micromagnetic model to physically manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions propagating in a chiral-magnetic thin film with a polarized ferroelectric essential to drive the system through the converse magnetoelectric effect. Effects caused by different velocities of the propagation, sizes of the thin film, and strength of the magnetoelectric couplings stron…
Writing, erasing and computing are three fundamental operations required by any working electronic devices. Magnetic skyrmions could be basic bits in promising in emerging topological spintronic devices. In particular, skyrmions in chiral magnets have outstanding properties like compact texture, uniform size and high mobility. However, creating, deleting and driving isolated skyrmions, as prototypes of aforementioned basic operations, have been grand challenge in chiral magnets ever since the discovery of skyrmions, and achieving all these three operations in a single device is highly desirabl…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin whirlpools that promise breakthroughs in future spintronic applications. Controlled generation of magnetic skyrmions by electric current is crucial for this purpose. While previous studies have demonstrated this operation, the topological charge of the generated skyrmions is determined by the direction of the external magnetic fields, thus is fixed. Here, we report the current-induced skyrmions creation in a chiral magnet FeGe nanostructure by using the \emph{in-situ} Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. We show that magnetic skyrmions or antiskyrmion…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanometric spin textures of outstanding potential for spintronic applications due to unique features governed by their non-trivial topology. It is well known that skyrmions of definite chirality are stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction (DMI) in bulk non-centrosimmetric materials or ultrathin films with strong spin-orbit coupling in the interface. In this work, we report on the detection of magnetic hedgehog-skyrmions at room temperature in confined systems with neither DMI nor perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We show that soft magnetic (permallo…
Using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, we study the skyrmion stability/instability as a response to uniaxial mechanical stresses. Skyrmions emerge in chiral magnetic materials as a stable spin configuration under external magnetic field $\vec{B}$ with the competition of ferromagnetic interaction and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at low temperature $T$. Skyrmion configurations are also known to be stable (unstable) under a compressive stress applied parallel (perpendicular) to $\vec{B}$. To understand the origin of such experimentally confirmed stability/instability, we use the Finsler g…
We report CrISe monolayer as a room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor with the Curie temperature ($T_C$), magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and band gap being 322 K, 113 $μ$eV and 0.67 eV, respectively. The $T_C$ and MAE can be further enhanced up to 385 K and 313 $μ$eV by tensile strain. More interestingly, the magnetic easy axis can be switched between off-plane and in-plane by compressive strain. Particularly, due to the broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling of Se atoms, a large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) of 2.40 meV is obtained. More importantly, by mic…
The tensile strain is a promising tool for creation and manipulation of magnetic solitonic textures in the chiral helimagnets via tunable control of magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here, by using the in-situ resonant small-angle x-ray scattering we demonstrate that the skyrmion and chiral soliton lattices can be achieved as metastable states in FeGe lamella as distinct states or even simultaneously by combining the tensile strain and magnetic fields in various orientations with respect to the deformation. The small-angle scattering data are discussed in the frame of …
Magnetic skyrmions, which are topological particle-like excitations in ferromagnets, have attracted a lot of attention recently. Skyrmionics is an attempt to use magnetic skyrmions as information carriers in next generation spintronic devices. Proposals of manipulations and operations of skyrmions are highly desired. Here, we show that the conversion, duplication and merging of isolated skyrmions with different chirality and topology are possible all in one system. We also demonstrate the conversion of a skyrmion into another form of a skyrmion, i.e., a bimeron. We design spin logic gates such…
Magnetic skyrmions are localised non-collinear spin textures with high potential for future spintronic applications. Skyrmion phases have been discovered in a number of materials and a focus of current research is the preparation, detection, and manipulation of individual skyrmions for an implementation in devices. Local experimental characterization of skyrmions has been performed by, e.g., Lorentz microscopy or atomic-scale tunnel magnetoresistance measurements using spin-polarised scanning tunneling microscopy. Here, we report on a drastic change of the differential tunnel conductance for m…
The internal and lattice structures of magnetic skyrmions in B20-type FeGe are investigated using off-axis electron holography. The temperature, magnetic field and angular dependence of the magnetic moments of individual skyrmions are analyzed. Whereas the internal skyrmion shape is found to vary with magnetic field, the inter-skyrmion distance remains almost unchanged in the lattice phase. The amplitude of the local magnetic moment is found to depend on temperature, while the skyrmion shape does not. Deviations from a circular to a hexagonal skyrmion structure are observed in the lattice phas…
The skyrmions generated by frustration in centrosymmetric structures host extra internal degrees of freedom: vorticity and helicity, resulting in distinctive properties and potential functionality, which are not shared by the skyrmions stemming from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric structures. The present work indicates that the magnetism-driven electric polarization carried by skyrmions provides a direct handle for tuning helicity. Especially for the in-plane magnetized skyrmions, the helicity can be continuously rotated and exactly picked by applying an external el…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically nontrivial spin textures which hold great promise as stable information carriers in spintronic devices at the nanoscale. One of the major challenges for developing novel skyrmion-based memory and logic devices is fast and controlled creation of magnetic skyrmions at ambient conditions. Here we demonstrate the single ultrafast (35-fs) laser pulse-induced generation of skyrmion bubbles and skyrmion bubble lattices from a ferromagnetic state in sputtered ultrathin magnetic films at room temperature. The skyrmion bubble density increases with the laser fluence …
Arising from emergent electromagnetic field of magnetic skyrmions due to their nontrivial topology, the skyrmion Hall effect might be a roadblock for practical applications since any longitudinal motions of skyrmions in nanotrack is accompanied by a transverse motion. A direct consequence of such an effect is easy destruction of skyrmions at the nanotrack edges during their fast motions along the nanotrack, despite their topological protection. Here we propose an entirely novel solution of completely inhibiting such skyrmion Hall effect without affecting its topological properties based on a a…
The successful realization of skyrmion-based spintronic devices depends on the easy manipulation of underlying magnetic interactions in the skyrmion-hosting materials. Although the mechanism of skyrmion formation in non-centrosymmetric magnets is comprehensively established, the stabilization process of different skyrmion-like magnetic textures in centrosymmetric magnets needs further investigation. Here, we utilize Lorentz transmission electron microscopy study to report the finding of a tunable skyrmion lattice up to room temperature in a centrosymmetric kagome ferromagnet Mn$_4$Ga$_2$Sn. We…
We show by micromagnetic simulations that spontaneous skyrmion ground state can exist in Co/Ru/Co nanodisks without the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI), which can remain stable in the applied magnetic field along +z direction even up to 0.44 T. The guiding center ($R_x$,$R_y$) of skyrmion defined by the moments of the topological density presents a novel gyration with a star-like trajectory in a pulsed magnetic field and a hexagonal trajectory after the field is switched off, which is different from that of vortex or bubble. One of the coupled skyrmions could move without an external ma…
The interesting physics and potential memory technologies resulting from topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions, has prompted efforts to discover new material systems that can host these kind of magnetic structures. Here we use the highly tunable magnetic properties of amorphous Fe/Gd multilayer films to explore the magnetic properties that lead to dipole-stabilized skyrmions and skyrmion lattices that form from the competition of dipolar field and exchange energy. Using both real space imaging and reciprocal space scattering techniques we determined the range of material prop…
The realization of magnetic skyrmions in nanostructures holds great promise for both fundamental research and device applications. Despite recent progress, intrinsic magnetic skyrmions in two-dimensional lattice are still rarely explored. Here, using first-principles calculations and Monte-Carlo simulations, we report the identification of spontaneous magnetic skyrmions in single-layer CrInX3 (X = Te, Se). Due to the joint effect of broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling, inherent large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction occurs in both systems, endowing the intriguing Neel-typ…
When spin polarised electrons flow through a magnetic texture a transfer torque is generated. We examine the effect of this torque on skyrmions and skyrmion bags, skyrmionic structures of arbitrary integer topological degree, in thin ferromagnetic films. Using micromagnetic simulations and analysis from the well known Thiele equation we explore the potential for sorting or binning skyrmions of varying degrees mechanically. We investigate the applicability of the Thiele equation to problems of this nature and derive a theory of skyrmion deflection ordered by topological degree.
In this manuscript we demonstrate the skyrmion formation in ultrathin nanodots using magnetic force microscopy tip. Submicron-size dots based on Pt/Co/Au multilayers hosting interfacial Dzyaloshiskii-Morya interaction were used in the experiments. We have found that the tip field generated by the magnetic tip significantly affects the magnetization state of the nanodots and leads to the formation of skyrmions. Micromagnetic simulations explain the evolution of the magnetic state during magnetic force microscopy scans and confirm the possibility of the skyrmion formation. The key transition in …
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin textures, stabilised in systems with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Several studies have shown that electrical currents can move skyrmions efficiently through spin-orbit torques. While promising for technological applications, current-driven skyrmion motion is intrinsically collective and accompanied by undesired heating effects. Here we demonstrate a new approach to control individual skyrmion positions precisely, which relies on the magnetic interaction between sample and a magnetic force microscopy (MFM) probe. We investig…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-protected spin textures that exhibit fascinating physical behaviors and large potential in highly energy efficient spintronic device applications. The main obstacles so far are that skyrmions have been observed in only a few exotic materials and at low temperatures, and manipulation of individual skyrmions has not yet been achieved. Here, we report the observation of stable magnetic skyrmions at room temperature in ultrathin transition metal ferromagnets with magnetic transmission soft x-ray microscopy. We demonstrate the ability to generate stable skyrmion…
