In order to relieve the misfitting elastic energy, the hetero-interfaces become semicoherent by forming networks of dislocations. These microscopic structures strongly influence the materials properties associated with the development of advanced materials. We develop a continuum model for the dislocation structures of semicoherent interfaces. The classical Frank-Bilby equation that governs the dislocation structures on semicoherent interfaces is not able to determine a unique solution. The available methods in the literature either use further information from atomistic simulations or consider only special cases (dislocations with no more than two Burgers vectors) where the Frank-Bilby equation has a unique solution. In our continuum model, the dislocation structure of a semicoherent interface is obtained by minimizing the energy of the equilibrium dislocation network with respect to all the possible Burgers vectors, subject to the constraint of the Frank-Bilby equation. The continuum model is validated by comparisons with atomistic simulation results.
Density functional theory calculations have been performed to study the structures and energetics of coherent and semicoherent TiC/Fe interfaces. A systematic method for determining the interfacial energy for the semicoherent interface with misfit dislocation network has been developed. The obtained interfacial energies are used to calculate the aspect ratios for the disc-like precipitates and a quantitative agreement with the experimental results is reached. Based on the obtained interfacial energies and atomic structure details, we propose models for describing the evolution of the interfaci…
Traditional models of interfacial phonon scattering, including the acoustic mismatch model (AMM) and diffuse mismatch model (DMM), take into account the bulk properties of the material surrounding the interface, but not the atomic structure and properties of the interface itself. Here, we derive a theoretical formalism for the phonon scattering at a dislocation grid, or two interpenetrating orthogonal arrays of dislocations, as this is the most stable structure of both the symmetric twist boundary and semicoherent heterointerface. With this approach, we are able to separately examine the contr…
Dislocations are the main carriers of the permanent deformation of crystals. For simulations of engineering applications, continuum models where material microstructures are represented by continuous density distributions of dislocations are preferred. It is challenging to capture in the continuum model the short-range dislocation interactions, which vanish after the standard averaging procedure from discrete dislocation models. In this study, we consider systems of parallel straight dislocation walls and develop continuum descriptions for the short-range interactions of dislocations by using …
This paper develops the small strain continuum dislocation theory accounting for statistically stored dislocations and Taylor hardening for single crystals. As illustration, the problem of anti-plane constrained shear of single crystal deforming in single slip is solved within the proposed theory. The distribution of geometrically necessary dislocations in the final state of equilibrium as well as the stress-strain curve exhibiting the Bauschinger translational work hardening and the size effect are found. Comparison with the stress-strain curve obtained from the continuum dislocation theory w…
The Continuum Dislocation Dynamics (CDD) theory and the Discrete Dislocation Dynamics (DDD) method are compared based on concise mathematical formulations of the coarse graining of discrete data. A numerical tool for converting from a discrete to a continuum representation of a given dislocation configuration is developed, which allows to directly compare both simulation approaches based on continuum quantities (e.g. scalar density, geometrically necessary densities, mean curvature). Investigating the evolution of selected dislocation configurations within analytically given velocity fields fo…
In continuum models of dislocations, proper formulations of short-range elastic interactions of dislocations are crucial for capturing various types of dislocation patterns formed in crystalline materials. In this article, the continuum dynamics of straight dislocations distributed on two parallel slip planes is modelled through upscaling the underlying discrete dislocation dynamics. Two continuum velocity field quantities are introduced to facilitate the discrete-to-continuum transition. The first one is the local migration velocity of dislocation ensembles which is found fully independent of…
Understanding the spontaneous emergence of dislocation patterns during plastic deformation is a long standing challenge in dislocation theory. During the past decades several phenomenological continuum models of dislocation patterning were proposed, but few of them (if any) are derived from microscopic considerations through systematic and controlled averaging procedures. In this paper we present a 2D continuum theory that is obtained by systematic averaging of the equations of motion of discrete dislocations. It is shown that in the evolution equations of the dislocation densities diffusion l…
The continuum dislocation dynamics framework for mesoscale plasticity is intended to capture the dislocation density evolution and the deformation of crystals when subjected to mechanical loading. It does so by solving a set of transport equations for dislocations concurrently with crystal mechanics equations, with the latter being cast in the form of an eigenstrain problem. Incorporating dislocation reactions in the dislocation transport equations is essential for making such continuum dislocation dynamics predictive. A formulation is proposed to incorporate dislocation reactions in the trans…
Non-singular dislocation continuum theories are studied. A comparison between Peierls-Nabarro dislocations and straight dislocations in strain gradient elasticity is given. The non-singular displacement fields, non-singular stresses, plastic distortions and dislocation core shapes are analyzed and compared for the two models. The main conclusion of this study is that due to their characteristic properties, the non-singular displacement fields, non-singular stresses and dislocation core shape of screw and edge dislocations obtained in the framework of strain gradient elasticity are more realist…
We present a continuum model to determine the dislocation structure and energy of low angle grain boundaries in three dimensions. The equilibrium dislocation structure is obtained by minimizing the grain boundary energy that is associated with the constituent dislocations subject to the constraint of Frank's formula. The orientation-dependent continuous distributions of dislocation lines on grain boundaries are described conveniently using the dislocation density potential functions, whose contour lines on the grain boundaries represent the dislocations. The energy of a grain boundary is the t…
Dislocation based modeling of plasticity is one of the central challenges at the crossover of materials science and continuum mechanics. Developing a continuum theory of dislocations requires the solution of two long standing problems: (i) to represent dislocation kinematics in terms of a reasonable number of variables and (ii) to derive averaged descriptions of the dislocation dynamics (i.e. material laws) in terms of these variables. The kinematic problem (i) was recently solved through the introduction of continuum dislocation dynamics (CDD), which provides kinematically consistent evolutio…
Continuum dislocation dynamics (CDD) represents the evolution of systems of curved and connected dislocation lines in terms of density-like field variables which include the volume density of loops (or 'curvature density') as an additional field. Since dislocation curvature represents a spatial derivative of the underlying discrete dislocation density tensor, the curvature field evolution equation of necessity contains numerically inconvenient higher-order derivatives of the density fields. We propose a simple approximation to express curvature in terms of density fields, and demonstrate its a…
We develop a continuum model for the dynamics of grain boundaries in three dimensions that incorporates the motion and reaction of the constituent dislocations. The continuum model is based on a simple representation of densities of curved dislocations on the grain boundary. Illposedness due to nonconvexity of the total energy is fixed by a numerical treatment based on a projection method that maintains the connectivity of the constituent dislocations. An efficient simulation method is developed, in which the critical but computationally expensive long-range interaction of dislocations is repl…
A three-dimensional continuum dislocation theory for single crystals containing curved dislocations is proposed. A set of governing equations and boundary conditions is derived for the true placement, plastic slips, and loop functions in equilibrium that minimize the free energy of crystal among all admissible functions, provided the resistance to the dislocation motion is negligible. For the non-vanishing resistance to dislocation motion the governing equations are derived from the variational equation that includes the dissipation function. A simplified theory for small strains is also provi…
In this paper, we present a continuum model to compute the energy of low angle grain boundaries for any given degrees of freedom (arbitrary rotation axis, rotation angle and boundary plane orientation) based on a continuum dislocation structure. In our continuum model, we minimize the grain boundary energy associated with the dislocation structure subject to the constraint of Frank's formula for dislocations with all possible Burgers vectors. This constrained minimization problem is solved by the penalty method by which it is turned into an unconstrained minimization problem. The grain boundar…

As a guide to constitutive specification, driving forces for dislocation velocity and nucleation rates are derived for a field theory of dislocation mechanics. A condition of closure for the theory in the form of a boundary condition for dislocation density is also derived. Kinematical features of dislocation evolution like initiation of bowing of a pinned screw segment, and initiation of cross-slip of a screw segment are discussed. An exact solution for the expansion of a polygonal loop as well as representation within the theory of dislocation level Schmid and non-Schmid behavior, and unload…
In this paper, we present a dislocation-density-based three-dimensional continuum model, where the dislocation substructures are represented by pairs of dislocation density potential functions (DDPFs), denoted by $ϕ$ and $ψ$. The slip plane distribution is characterized by the contour surfaces of $ψ$, while the distribution of dislocation curves on each slip plane is identified by the contour curves of $ϕ$ which represents the plastic slip on the slip plane. By using DDPFs, we can explicitly write down an evolution equation system, which is shown consistent with the underlying discrete disloca…
Plasticity is governed by the evolution of, in general anisotropic, systems of dislocations. We seek to faithfully represent this evolution in terms of density-like variables which average over the discrete dislocation microstructure. Starting from T. Hochrainer's continuum theory of dislocations (CDD), we introduce a methodology based on the 'Maximum Information Entropy Principle' (MIEP) for deriving closed-form evolution equations for dislocation density measures of different order. These equations provide an optimum representation of the kinematic properties of systems of curved and connect…

Micro-plasticity theories and models are suitable to explain and predict mechanical response of devices on length scales where the influence of the carrier of plastic deformation - the dislocations - cannot be neglected or completely averaged out. To consider these effects without resolving each single dislocation a large variety of continuum descriptions has been developed, amongst which the higher-dimensional continuum dislocation dynamics (hdCDD) theory by Hochrainer et al. (Phil. Mag. 87, pp. 1261-1282) takes a different, statistical approach and contains information that are usually only …
In this paper, we present a continuum model for the dynamics of low angle grain boundaries in two dimensions based on the motion of constituent dislocations of the grain boundaries. The continuum model consists of an equation for the motion of grain boundaries (i.e., motion of the constituent dislocations in the grain boundary normal direction) and equations for the dislocation structure evolution on the grain boundaries. This model is derived from the discrete dislocation dynamics model. The long-range elastic interaction between dislocations is included in the continuum model, which ensures …
Plastic deformation of metals involves the complex evolution of dislocations forming strongly connected dislocation networks. These dislocation networks are based on dislocation reactions, which can form junctions during the interactions of different slip systems. Extracting the fundamentals of the network behaviour during plastic deformation by adequate physically based theories is essential for crystal plasticity models. In this work, we demonstrate how knowledge from discrete dislocation dynamics simulations to continuum-based formulations can be transferred by applying a physically based d…
Crystal plasticity is the result of the motion and interaction of dislocations. There is, however, still a major gap between microscopic and mesoscopic simulations and continuum crystal plasticity models. Only recently a higher dimensional dislocation density tensor was defined which overcomes some drawbacks of earlier dislocation density measures. The evolution equation for this tensor can be considered as a continuum version of dislocation dynamics. We use this evolution equation to develop evolution equations for the total dislocation density and an average curvature which together govern a…
During plastic deformation of crystalline materials, point defects such as vacancies and interstitials are generated by jogs on moving dislocations. A detailed model for jog formation and transport during plastic deformation was developed within the vector density-based continuum dislocation dynamics framework (Lin and El-Azab, 2020; Xia and El-Azab, 2015). As a part of this model, point defect generation associated with jog transport was formulated in terms of the volume change due to the non-conservative motion of jogs. Balance equations for the vacancies and interstitials including their ra…
Continuum dislocation dynamics models of mesoscale plasticity consist of dislocation transport-reaction equations coupled with crystal mechanics equations. The coupling between these two sets of equations is such that dislocation transport gives rise to the evolution of plastic distortion (strain), while the evolution of the latter fixes the stress from which the dislocation velocity field is found via a mobility law. Earlier solutions of these equations employed a staggered solution scheme for the two sets of equations in which the plastic distortion was updated via time integration of its ra…
We study the diffusion of anti-plane elastic waves in a two dimensional continuum by many, randomly placed, screw dislocations. Building on a previously developed theory for coherent propagation of such waves, the incoherent behavior is characterized by way of a Bethe Salpeter (BS) equation. A Ward-Takahashi identity (WTI) is demonstrated and the BS equation is solved, as an eigenvalue problem, for long wavelengths and low frequencies. A diffusion equation results and the diffusion coefficient $D$ is calculated. The result has the expected form $D = v^* l /2$, where $l$, the mean free path, is…
Equations for dislocation evolution bridge the gap between dislocation properties and continuum descriptions of plastic behavior of crystalline materials. Computer simulations can help us verify these evolution equations and find their fitting parameters. In this paper, we employ discrete dislocation dynamics to establish a continuum-based model for the evolution of the dislocation structure in polycrystalline thin films. Expressions are developed for the density of activated dislocation sources, as well as dislocation nucleation and annihilation rates. We demonstrate how size effect naturally…
The coherent propagation of elastic waves in a solid filled with a random distribution of pinned dislocation segments is studied to all orders in perturbation theory. It is shown that, within the independent scattering approximation, the perturbation series that generates the mass operator is a geometric series that can thus be formally summed. A divergent quantity is shown to be renormalizable to zero at low frequencies. At higher frequencies said quantity can be expressed in terms of a cut-off with dimensions of length, related to the dislocation length, and physical quantities can be comput…
Creep in single crystal Nickel-based superalloys has been a topic of interest since decades, and nowadays simulations are more and more able to complement experiments. In these alloys, the $γ/γ'$ phase microstructure co-evolves with the system of dislocations under load, and understanding the mutual interactions is essential for understanding the resulting creep properties. Predictive modeling thus requires multiphysics frameworks capable of modeling and simulating both the phase and defect microstructures. To do so, we formulate a coupled model of phase-field evolution and continuum dislocati…
Because of the enormous range of time and space scales involved in dislocation dynamics, plastic modeling at macroscale requires a continuous formulation. In this paper, we present a rigorous formulation of the transition between the discrete, where plastic flow is resolved at the scale of individual dislocations, and the continuum, where dislocations are represented by densities. First, we focus on the underlying coarse-graining procedure and show that the emerging correlation-induced stresses are scale-dependent. Each of these stresses can be expanded into the sum of two components. The firs…
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are single phase crystals that consist of random solid solutions of multiple elements in approximately equal proportions. This class of novel materials have exhibited superb mechanical properties, such as high strength combined with other desired features. The strength of crystalline materials is associated with the motion of dislocations. In this paper, we derive a stochastic continuum model based on the Peierls-Nabarro framework for inter-layer dislocations in a bilayer HEA from an atomistic model that incorporates the atomic level randomness. We use asymptotic ana…
The dislocation core is an important region as it controls many important properties of materials. Elasticity breaks down in the core and the stress, force, and energy diverge at the dislocation line. We consider three commonest methods employed in Discrete Dislocation Dynamics (DDD) simulations to eliminate these singularities: (1) considering a cutoff parameter, (2) spreading the Burgers vector (CAWB theory), and (3) using gradient elasticity. Each of these methods includes an extra length parameter to regularize the elastic fields. In this article, we show that these regularization paramete…
We study the coherent propagation and incoherent diffusion of in-plane elastic waves in a two dimensional continuum populated by many, randomly placed and oriented, edge dislocations. Because of the Peierls-Nabarro force the dislocations can oscillate around an equilibrium position with frequency $ω_0$. The coupling between waves and dislocations is given by the Peach-Koehler force. This leads to a wave equation with an inhomogeneous term that involves a differential operator. In the coherent case, a Dyson equation for a mass operator is set up and solved to all orders in perturbation theory i…
Dislocation based modeling of plasticity is one of the central challenges at the crossover of materials science and continuum mechanics. Developing a continuum theory of dislocations requires the solution of two long standing problems: (i) to find a faithful representation of dislocation kinematics with a reasonable number of variables and (ii) to derive averaged descriptions of the dislocation dynamics (i.e. material laws) in terms of these variables. In the current paper we solve the first problem. This is achieved through a multipole expansion of the dislocation density in terms of so-calle…
The continuum mechanics of line defects representing singularities due to terminating discontinuities of the elastic displacement and its gradient field is developed. The development is intended for application to coupled phase transformation, grain boundary, and plasticity-related phenomena at the level of individual line defects and domain walls. The continuously distributed defect approach is developed as a generalization of the discrete, isolated defect case. Constitutive guidance for equilibrium response and dissipative driving forces respecting frame-indifference and non-negative mechani…
Continuum dislocation dynamics (CDD) aims at representing the evolution of systems of curved and connected dislocation lines in terms of density-like field variables. Here we discuss how the processes of dislocation multiplication and annihilation can be described within such a framework. We show that both processes are associated with changes in the volume density of dislocation loops: dislocation annihilation needs to be envisaged in terms of the merging of dislocation loops, while conversely dislocation multiplication is associated with the generation of new loops. Both findings point towar…
Due to recent successes of a statistical-based nonlocal continuum crystal plasticity theory for single-glide in explaining various aspects such as dislocation patterning and size-dependent plasticity, several attempts have been made to extend the theory to describe crystals with multiple slip systems using ad-hoc assumptions. We present here a mesoscale continuum theory of plasticity for multiple slip systems of parallel edge dislocations. We begin by constructing the Bogolyubov-Born-Green-Yvon-Kirkwood (BBGYK) integral equations relating different orders of dislocation correlation functions i…
A continuum model of dislocation pileups that takes the self-energy of dislocations into account is proposed. An analytical solution describing the distribution of dislocations in equilibrium is found from the energy minimization. Based on this solution we show (i) the existence of a critical threshold stress for the equilibrium of dislocations within a double pileup, and (ii) the existence of a non-linear regime in which the number of dislocations in a double pileup does not scale linearly with the resolved external shear stress, contrary to the classical double pileup model.
The spontaneous emergence of heterogeneous dislocation patterns is a conspicuous feature of plastic deformation and strain hardening of crystalline solids. Despite long-standing efforts in the materials science and physics of defect communities, there is no general consensus regarding the physical mechanism which leads to the formation of dislocation patterns. In order to establish the fundamental mechanism, we formulate an extremely simplified, minimal model to investigate the formation of patterns based on the continuum theory of fluxes of curved dislocations. We demonstrate that strain hard…
In a recent publication, we derived the mesoscale continuum theory of plasticity for multiple-slip systems of parallel edge dislocations, motivated by the statistical-based nonlocal continuum crystal plasticity theory for single-glide due to Yefimov et al. (2004b). In this dislocation field theory (DiFT) the transport equations for both the total dislocation densities and geometrically necessary dislocation densities on each slip system were obtained from the Peach-Koehler interactions through both single and pair dislocation correlations. The effect of pair correlation interactions manifested…

We develop a continuum dislocation description of twist and stretch moire superlattices in 2D material bilayers. The continuum formulation is based on the topological constraints introduced by the periodic dislocation network associated with the moire structure. The approach is based on solving analytically for the structural distortion and displacement fields that satisfy the topological constraints, and which minimize the total energy. The total energy is described by both the strain energy of each individual distorted layer, and a Peierls-Nabarro like interfacial contribution arising from s…
The propagation of incoherent elastic energy in a three-dimensional solid due to the scattering by many, randomly placed and oriented, pinned dislocation segments, is considered in a continuum mechanics framework. The scattering mechanism is that of an elastic string of length L that re-radiates as a response to an incoming wave. The scatterers are thus not static but have their own dynamics. A Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equation is established, and a Ward-Takahashi Identity (WTI) is demonstrated. The BS equation is written as a spectral problem that, using the WTI, is solved in the diffusive limit. …
A continuum dislocation model of formation of grains whose boundaries have a non-vanishing thickness is proposed. For a single crystal deforming in simple shear the lamellar structure of grains with thin layers containing dislocations as the geometrically necessary boundaries turns out to be energetically preferable. The thickness and the energy of this type of grain boundary are computed as functions of the misorientation angle.
Although continuum theory has been widely used to describe the long-range elastic behavior of dislocations, it is limited in its ability to describe mechanical behaviors that occur near dislocation cores. This limit of the continuum theory mainly stems from the discrete nature of the core region, which induces a drag force on the dislocation core during glide. Depending on external conditions, different drag mechanisms are activated that govern the dynamics of dislocations in their own way. This is revealed by the resultant speed of the dislocation. In this work, we develop a theoretical frame…
Viscoplastic flow of polycrystalline metallic materials is the result of motion and interaction of dislocations, line defects of the crystalline structure. In the microstructural (physics-based) constitutive model presented in this paper, the main underlying microstructural processes influencing viscoplastic deformation and mechanical properties of metals in cold and warm regimes are statistically described by the introduced sets of postulates/axioms for continuum dislocation dynamics (CDD). Three microstructural (internal) state variables (MSVs) are used for statistical quantifications of dif…
The plasticity transition at the yield strength of a crystal typically signifies the tendency of dislocation defects towards relatively unrestricted motion. For an isolated dislocation the motion is in the slip plane with velocity proportional to the shear stress, while due to the long range interaction dislocation ensembles move towards satisfying emergent collective elastoplastic modes. Such collective motions have been discussed in terms of the elusively defined backstress. In this paper, we develop a two-dimensional stochastic continuum dislocation dynamics theory that clarifies the role o…
We focus on mesoscopic dislocation patterning via a continuum dislocation dynamics theory (CDD) in three dimensions (3D). We study three distinct physically motivated dynamics which consistently lead to fractal formation in 3D with rather similar morphologies, and therefore we suggest that this is a general feature of the 3D collective behavior of geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) ensembles. The striking self-similar features are measured in terms of correlation functions of physical observables, such as the GND density, the plastic distortion, and the crystalline orientation. Remarkab…
In this paper, we present an improved framework of the spectral-based Discrete Dislocation Dynamics (DDD) approach introduced in [1,2], that establishes a direct connection with the continuum Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM) approach. To this end, an analytical method to convert a discrete dislocation network to its continuous dislocation density tensor representation is first developed. From there, the mechanical fields are evaluated using a FDM-based spectral framework, while submesh resolution elastic interactions are accounted for via the introduction of a rigorous stress splitting proced…
