In this survey we present the near-optimal stochastic control problem according to some recent tools in the literature. In particular, we focus on the approach of a discretization of the noise values instead of the canonical time-discretization. This is the so called {\it skeleton} structure. This allows to obtain an $ε$-optimal control in non-Markovian systems (the main Theorem). A simple example illustrates the technique. The importance of the approach is emphasised in a final section on open problems related to more geometrical framework and discontinuous noise.
This paper considers the problem of finding a solution to the finite horizon constrained Markov decision processes (CMDP) where the objective as well as constraints are sum of additive and multiplicative utilities. Towards solving this, we construct another CMDP, with only additive utilities under a restricted set of policies, whose optimal value is equal to that of the original CMDP. Furthermore, we provide a finite dimensional bilinear program (BLP) whose value equals the CMDP value and whose solution provides the optimal policy. We also suggest an algorithm to solve this BLP.
When some eigenvalues of a spiked multiplicative resp. additive deformation model of a Hermitian Wigner matrix resp. a sample covariance matrix separate from the bulk, we study how the corresponding eigenvectors project onto those of the perturbation. We point out that the inverse of the subordination function relative to the free additive resp. multiplicative convolution plays an important part in the asymptotic behavior.
This article deals with stochastic partial differential equations with quadratic nonlinearities perturbed by small additive and multiplicative noise. We present the approximate solution of the original equation via the amplitude equation and give the rigorous error analysis. For illustration, we apply our main theorems to stochastic Burger's equation.
We study properties of the Laplace transforms of non-negative additive functionals of Markov chains. We are namely interested in a multiplicative ergodicity property used in [18] to study bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We develop a general approach based on the use of the operator perturbation method. We apply our general results to two examples of Markov chains, including a linear autoregressive model. In these two examples the operator-type assumptions reduce to some expected finite moment conditions on the functional (no exponential moment conditions are assumed in this wo…
We investigate the regularizing effect of certain additive continuous perturbations on SDEs with multiplicative fractional Brownian motion (fBm). Traditionally, a Lipschitz requirement on the drift and diffusion coefficients is imposed to ensure existence and uniqueness of the SDE. We show that suitable perturbations restore existence, uniqueness and regularity of the flow for the resulting equation, even when both the drift and the diffusion coefficients are distributional, thus extending the program of regularization by noise to the case of multiplicative SDEs. Our method relies on a combina…
We study the exponential growth of bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We suppose here that the lifetimes of the cells are dependent random variables, that the numbers of new cells are random and dependent. Lifetimes and new cells's numbers are also assumed to be dependent. We illustrate our results by examples, including some Markov models. Our approach is related to the behaviour of the Laplace transform of nonnegative additive functional of Markov chains and require weak moment assumption (no exponential moment is needed).
In this paper we consider an additive functional of an observable $V(x)$ of a Markov jump process. We assume that the law of the expected jump time $t(x)$ under the invariant probability measure $π$ of the skeleton chain belongs to the domain of attraction of a subordinator. Then, the scaled limit of the functional is a Mittag-Leffler proces, provided that $Ψ(x):=V(x)t(x)$ is square integrable w.r.t. $π$. When the law of $Ψ(x)$ belongs to a domain of attraction of a stable law the resulting process can be described by a composition of a stable process and the inverse of a subordinator and thes…
In this paper, we consider the Cox--Ingersoll--Ross (CIR) process in the regime where the process does not hit zero. We construct additive and multiplicative discrete approximation schemes for the price of asset that is modeled by the CIR process and geometric CIR process. In order to construct these schemes, we take the Euler approximations of the CIR process itself but replace the increments of the Wiener process with iid bounded vanishing symmetric random variables. We introduce a "truncated" CIR process and apply it to prove the weak convergence of asset prices. We establish the fact that …
Let $\boxplus$, $\boxtimes$ and $\uplus$ be the free additive, free multiplicative, and boolean additive convolutions, respectively. For a probability measure $μ$ on $[0,\infty)$ with finite second moment, we find the scaling limit of $(μ^{\boxtimes N})^{\boxplus N}$ as $N$ goes to infinity. The $\mathcal{R}$--transform of the limit distribution can be represented by the Lambert's $W$ function. We also find similar limit theorem by replacing the free additive convolution with the boolean convolution.
In this paper, we determine the effect of the free multiplicative convolution on the pseudo-variance function of a Cauchy-Stieltjes kernel family. We then use the machinery of variance functions to establish some limit theorems related to this type of convolution and involving the free additive convolution and the boolean additive convolution.
We revisit the discrete additive and multiplicative coalescents, starting with $n$ particles with unit mass. These cases are known to be related to some "combinatorial coalescent processes": a time reversal of a fragmentation of Cayley trees or a parking scheme in the additive case, and the random graph process $(G(n,p))_p$ in the multiplicative case. Time being fixed, encoding these combinatorial objects in real-valued processes indexed by the line is the key to describing the asymptotic behaviour of the masses as $n\to +\infty$. We propose to use the Prim order on the vertices instead of the…
Multiplicative noise arises in inverse problems when, for example, uncertainty on measurements is proportional to the size of the measurement itself. The likelihood that arises is hence more complicated than that from additive noise. We consider two multiplicative noise models: purely multiplicative noise, and a mixture of multiplicative noise and additive noise. Adopting a Bayesian approach, we provide conditions for the resulting posterior distributions on Banach space to be continuous with respect to perturbations in the data; the inclusion of additive noise in addition to multiplicative no…
In this paper, we first introduce the explicit analytical formulas for the expected values of the Gutman and Schultz indices for a random cyclooctane chain COCn. Meanwhile, the explicit formulas of the variances of the Gutman and Schultz indices for a random cyclooctane chain are determined and we prove these two indices are asymptotically subject to normal distribution. Furthermore, we are surprised to find the variances of Kf*(COCn) and Kf+(COCn) for a random cyclooctane chain based on the known results of others' paper and they are asymptotically subject to normal distribution.
We analyse an additive-increase and multiplicative-decrease (aka growth-collapse) process that grows linearly in time and that experiences downward jumps at Poisson epochs that are (deterministically) proportional to its present position. This process is used for example in modelling of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and can be viewed as a particular example of the so-called shot noise model, a basic tool in modeling earthquakes, avalanches and neuron firings. For this process, and also for its reflected versions, we consider one- and two-sided exit problems that concern the identificatio…
In classical probability the law of large numbers for the multiplicative convolution follows directly from the law for the additive convolution. In free probability this is not the case. The free additive law was proved by D. Voiculescu in 1986 for probability measures with bounded support and extended to all probability measures with first moment by J. M. Lindsay and V. Pata in 1997, while the free multiplicative law was proved only recently by G. Tucci in 2010. In this paper we extend Tucci's result to measures with unbounded support while at the same time giving a more elementary proof for …
Stochastic averaging problems with Gaussian forcing have been studied thoroughly for many years, but far less attention has been paid to problems where the stochastic forcing has infinite variance, such as an α-stable noise forcing. It has been shown that simple linear processes driven by correlated additive and multiplicative (CAM) Gaussian noise, which emerge in the context of atmosphere and ocean dynamics, have infinite variance in certain parameter regimes. In this paper, we study a stochastic averaging problem where a linear CAM noise process in a particular parameter regime is used to dr…
We establish well-posedness in the mild sense for a class of stochastic semilinear evolution equations with a polynomially growing quasi-monotone nonlinearity and multiplicative Poisson noise. We also study existence and uniqueness of invariant measures for the associated semigroup in the Markovian case. A key role is played by a new maximal inequality for stochastic convolutions in $L_p$ spaces.
It is known that real Non-Gaussian stable distributions are unimodal, not additive strongly unimodal, and multiplicative strongly unimodal in the symmetric case. By a theorem of Cuculescu-Theodorescu, the only remaining relevant situation for the multiplicative strong unimodality of stable laws is the one-sided. In this paper, we show that positive $α-$stable laws are multiplicative strongly unimodal iff $α\le 1/2.$
Belinschi and Nica introduced a composition semigroup on the set of probability measures. Using this semigroup, they introduced a free divisibility indicator, from which one can know whether a probability measure is freely infinitely divisible or not. In this paper we further investigate this indicator, introduce a multiplicative version of it and are able to show many properties. Specifically, on the first half of the paper, we calculate how the indicator changes with respect to free and Boolean powers; we prove that free and Boolean 1/2-stable laws have free divisibility indicators equal to …
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the free additive infinite divisibility of some free multiplicative convolutions with the Wigner, the arcsine, the free Poisson and other distributions, including explicit examples.
