In this paper we use the Riccati equation method with other ones to establish global solvability, stability and oscillation criteria for a class of two dimensional nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations, which is a generalization of wide classes of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations, studied by many authors. The applicability of some of these criteria are illustrated by examples.
Some global existence criteria for quaternionic Riccati equations are established. Two of them are used to prove a completely non conjugation theorem for solutions of linear systems of ordinary differential equations.
A new approach is used to obtain a global solvability criterion for matrix Riccati equations. It is shown that the obtained result is an extension of a result derived from a comparison theorem for matrix Riccati equations. Two corollaries were drawn from the obtained result as well.
The Riccati equation method is used to establish some global solvability criteria for some classes of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Two oscillation theorems are proved. The results are applied to the Emden - Fowler equation and to the Van der Pol type equation.
The paper concerns the solvability by quadratures of linear differential systems, which is one of the questions of differential Galois theory. We consider systems with regular singular points as well as those with (non-resonant) irregular ones and propose some criteria of solvability for systems whose (formal) exponents are sufficiently small.
Three comparison criteria for the Abel equation of 1es kind are proved. The results obtained are used to obtain global solvability criteria and some criteria of existence of closed solutions for the mentioned equation. The results obtained are demonstrated by examples.
The Riccati equation method and an approach of the use of unknown factors is used to establish oscillation, suboscillation and nonoscillation criteria for linear systems of ordinary differential equations. A necessary condition for Lyapunov (asymptotic) stability for these systems is obtained.
The Riccati equation method is used to establish three new oscillatory criteria for the second order linear ordinary differential equations in the marginal, sub extremal and extremal cases. We show that the first of these criteria implies the J. Deng's oscillatory criterion. An extremal oscillatory condition for the Mathieu's equation is obtained. The obtained results are compared with some known oscillatory criteria.
The Riccati equation method is used to establish an oscillatory and a non oscillatory criteria for nonhomogeneous linear systems of two first-order ordinary differential equations. It is shown that the obtained oscillatory criterion is a generalization of J. S. W. Wong's oscillatory criterion.
The Riccati equation method is used for study the oscillatory and non oscillatory behavior of solutions of systems of two first order linear two by two dimensional matrix differential equations. An integral and an interval oscillatory criteria are obtained. Two non oscillatory criteria are obtained as well. On an example one of the obtained oscillatory criteria is compared with some well known results.
We provide linearizability criteria for a class of systems of third-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that is cubically semi-linear in the first derivative, by differentiating a system of second-order quadratically semi-linear ODEs and using the original system to replace the second derivative. The procedure developed splits into two cases, those where the coefficients are constant and those where they are variables. Both cases are discussed and examples given.
Using geometric methods for linearizing systems of second order cubically semi-linear ordinary differential equations and third order quintically semi-linear ordinary differential equations, we extend to the fourth order by differentiating the third order equation. This yields criteria for linearizability of a class of fourth order semi-linear ordinary differential equations, which have not been discussed in the literature previously. It is shown that the procedure can be extended to higher order. Though the results for the higher orders are complicated, they are doable by algebraic computing.…
We use some properties of solutions of Riccati equation for establishing boundedness and stability criteria for solutions of second order linear ordinary differential equations. We show that the conditions on coefficients of the equations, appearing in the proven criteria, do not follow from the conditions, which ensure the application of the WKB approximation to the second order linear equations. On these examples we compare the obtained results wit the results obtained by the Liapunov and Bogdanov methods, by a method involving estimates of solutions in the Lozinski's logarithmic norms, and …
We establish the unique solvability of a coupling problem for entire functions which arises in inverse spectral theory for singular second order ordinary differential equations/two-dimensional first order systems and is also of relevance for the integration of certain nonlinear wave equations.
The Riccati equation method is used to establish some new stability criteria for systems of two linear first-order ordinary differential equations. It is shown that two of these criteria in the two dimensional case imply the Routh - Hurwitz's criterion.
Lie's linearizability criteria for scalar second-order ordinary differential equations had been extended to systems of second-order ordinary differential equations by using geometric methods. These methods not only yield the linearizing transformations but also the solutions of the nonlinear equations. Here complex methods for a scalar ordinary differential equation are used for linearizing systems of two second-order ordinary and partial differential equations, which can use the power of the geometric method for writing the solutions. Illustrative examples of mechanical systems including the …
The Riccati equation method is used to establish some oscillatory criteria for the second order linear functional - differential equations of multiple terms with locally integrable coefficients. An interval oscillation criterion for the second order linear functional - differential equations is proved. We have obtained a generalization of an oscillation theorem of L. Berezanski and E. Braverman, a generalization of the well known Fite's oscillation criterion and a new global solvability criterion for the second order linear functional - differential equations with advanced and retarded argumen…
Local solvability and non-solvability are classified for left-invariant differential operators on the Heisenberg group H_1 of the form L=P_n(X,Y)+Q(X,Y) where the P_n are certain homogeneous polynomials of order n greater than or equal to 2 and Q is of lower order with X= \partial_x, Y=\partial_y+x\partial_w on R^3. We extend previous studies of operators of the form P_n(X,Y) via representations involving ordinary differential operators with a parameter.
Some properties of global solution of scalar Riccati equation are studied. On the basis of these properties using the Whiburn's and Leighton - Nehary's theorems some oscillatory and criteria are proved for second order linear systems of ordinary differential equations.
The well-known solution theory for (systems of) linear ordinary differential equations undergoes significant changes when introducing an additional real parameter. Properties like the existence of fundamental sets of solutions or characterizations of such sets via nonvanishing Wronskians are sensitive to the topological properties of the underlying domain of the independent variable and the parameter. We give a complete characterization of the solvability of such parameter-dependent equations and systems in terms of topological properties of the domain. In addition, we also investigate this pr…
We study one-dimensional stochastic integral equations with non-smooth dispersion coefficients, and with drift components that are not restricted to be absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. In the spirit of Lamperti, Doss and Sussmann, we relate solutions of such equations to solutions of certain ordinary integral equations, indexed by a generic element of the underlying probability space. This relation allows us to solve the stochastic integral equations in a pathwise sense.
We study the problem of solvability of linear differential systems with small coefficients in the Liouvillian sense (or, by generalized quadratures). For a general system, this problem is equivalent to that of solvability of the Lie algebra of the differential Galois group of the system. However, dependence of this Lie algebra on the system coefficients remains unknown. We show that for the particular class of systems with non-resonant irregular singular points that have sufficiently small coefficient matrices, the problem is reduced to that of solvability of the explicit Lie algebra generated…
Invariant linearization criteria of square systems of second-order quadratically semi-linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that can be represented as geodesic equations are extended to square systems of ODEs cubically nonlinear in the first derivatives. It is shown that there are two branches for the linearization problem via point transformations for an arbitrary system of second-order ODEs. One is when the system is at most cubic in the first derivatives. We solve this branch of the linearization problem by point transformations in the case of a square sytem of two second-order ODEs…
Using geometric methods for linearizing systems of second order cubically semi-linear ordinary differential equations, we extend to the third order by differentiating the second order equation. This yields criteria for linearizability of a class of third order semi-linear ordinary differential equations, which is distinct from the classes available in the literature. Some examples are given and discussed.
The Lie linearizability criteria are extended to complex functions for complex ordinary differential equations. The linearizability of complex ordinary differential equations is used to study the linearizability of corresponding systems of two real ordinary differential equations. The transformations that map a system of two nonlinear ordinary differential equations into systems of linear ordinary differential equations are obtained from complex transformations. Invariant criteria for linearization are given for second order complex ordinary differential equations in terms of the coefficients …
In this paper we have considered higher order two dimensional coupled system of non-linear ordinary differential equations. We have given necessary and sufficient conditions on the non-linear functions such that the solutions pair oscilla
For systems of ordinary differential equations on a compact interval, we study the character of solvability of the most general linear boundary-value problems in Sobolev spaces. We find the indices of these problems and obtain a criterion of their well-posedness.
The Riccati equation method is used to establish a new stability criteria for linear systems of ordinary differential equations. Two examples are presented in which the obtained result is compared with the results obtained by the Lyapunov and Bogdanov methods, by a method involving estimates of solutions in the Lozinskii logarithmic norms and by the freezing method.
The Riccati equation method is used to establish oscillation and non-oscillation criteria for second order linear nonhomogeneous functional-differential equations. We show that the obtained oscillation criterion is a generalization of J. S. W. Wong's oscillation criterion for second order linear nonhomogeneous ordinary differential equations. Two examples, demonstrating the aptitude of the obtained criteria, are presented.
Linearization problem of ordinary differential equations by a new set of tangent transformations is considered in the paper. This set of transformations allows one to extend the set of transformations applied for the linearization problem. Criteria for fourth-order ordinary differential equations to be linearizable are obtained in a particular case; a linearization test and procedure for obtaining the linearizing transformations are provided in explicit forms.
The linearizability of differential equations was first considered by Lie for scalar second order semi-linear ordinary differential equations. Since then there has been considerable work done on the algebraic classification of linearizable equations and even on systems of equations. However, little has been done in the way of providing explicit criteria to determine their linearizability. Using the connection between isometries and symmetries of the system of geodesic equations criteria were established for second order quadratically and cubically semi-linear equations and for systems of equat…
We discuss the solvability of a fairly general class of systems of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations with functional terms that depend on several parameters. The nonlinearities and the functionals are allowed to depend on the components of the system and their derivatives. The results are applicable to systems of nonlocal second order ordinary differential equations subject to functional boundary conditions, this is illustrated in an example. Our approach is based on the classical fixed point index.
The linearization of complex ordinary differential equations is studied by extending Lie's criteria for linearizability to complex functions of complex variables. It is shown that the linearization of complex ordinary differential equations implies the linearizability of systems of partial differential equations corresponding to those complex ordinary differential equations. The invertible complex transformations can be used to obtain invertible real transformations that map a system of nonlinear partial differential equations into a system of linear partial differential equation. Explicit inv…
We propose interconnections between some problems of PDE, geometry, algebra, calculus and physics. Uniqueness of a solution of the Dirichlet problem and of some other boundary value problems for the string equation inside an arbitrary biquadratic algebraic curve is considered. It is shown that a solution is non-unique if and only if a corresponding Poncelet problem for two conics has a periodic trajectory. A set of problems is proven to be equivalent to the above problem. Among them are the solvability problem of the algebraic Pell-Abel equation and the indeterminacy problem of a new moment pr…
We discuss the solvability of an infinite system of first order ordinary differential equations on the half line, subject to nonlocal initial conditions. The main result states that if the nonlinearities possess a suitable "sub-linear" growth then the system has at least one solution. The approach relies on the application, in a suitable Fréchet space, of the classical Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point theorem. We show that, as a special case, our approach covers the case of a system of a finite number of differential equations. An illustrative example of application is also provided.
In this paper we consider the linear ordinary equation of the second order $$ L x(t)\equiv \ddot{x}(t) +a(t)\dot{x}(t)+b(t)x(t)=f(t), \eqno{(1)} $$ and the corresponding homogeneous equation $$ \ddot{x}(t) +a(t)\dot{x}(t)+b(t)x(t)=0. \eqno{(2)} $$ Note that $[α,β]$ is called a nonoscillation interval if every nontrivial solution has at most one zero on this interval. Many investigations which seem to have no connection such as differential inequalities, the Polia-Mammana decomposition (i.e. representation of the operator $L$ in the form of products of the first order differential operators), u…
Complex-linearization of a class of systems of second order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) has already been studied with complex symmetry analysis. Linearization of this class has been achieved earlier by complex method, however, linearization criteria and the most general linearizable form of such systems have not been derived yet. In this paper, it is shown that the general linearizable form of the complex-linearizable systems of two second order ODEs is (at most) quadratically semi-linear in the first order derivatives of the dependent variables. Further, linearization conditions ar…
Exact solvability of two typical examples of the discrete quantum mechanics, i.e. the dynamics of the Meixner-Pollaczek and the continuous Hahn polynomials with full parameters, is newly demonstrated both at the Schroedinger and Heisenberg picture levels. A new quasi exactly solvable difference equation is constructed by crossing these two dynamics, that is, the quadratic potential function of the continuous Hahn polynomial is multiplied by the constant phase factor of the Meixner-Pollaczek type. Its ordinary quantum mechanical counterpart, if exists, does not seem to be known.
We study the solvability of a system of ordinary differential equations derived from null geodesics of the LTB metric with data given in terms of a so-called redshift parameter. Data is introduced along these geodesics by the luminosity distance function. We check our results with luminosity distance depending on the cosmological constant and with the well-known FRW model.
The three-compartmental demographic model by Korotaeyv-Malkov-Khaltourina, connecting population size, economic surplus, and educational level, is considered from the point of view of dynamical systems theory. It is shown that there exist two integrals of motion, which enable the system to be reduced to one non-linear ordinary differential equation. The study of its structure provides analytical criteria for the dominance ranges of the dynamics of Malthus and Kremer. Additionally, the particular ranges of parameters enable the derived general ordinary differential equations to be reduced to th…
In an earlier paper (A. N. Kochubei, {\it Pacif. J. Math.} 269 (2014), 355--369), the author considered a restriction of Vladimirov's fractional differentiation operator $D^α$, $α>0$, to radial functions on a non-Archimedean field. In particular, it was found to possess such a right inverse $I^α$ that the change of an unknown function $u=I^αv$ reduces the Cauchy problem for a linear equation with $D^α$ (for radial functions) to an integral equation whose properties resemble those of classical Volterra equations. In other words, we found, in the framework of non-Archimedean pseudo-differential …
