The breakup of an interface into a cascade of droplets and their subsequent coalescence is a generic problem of central importance to a large number of industrial settings such as mixing, separations, and combustion. We study the breakup of a liquid jet introduced through a cylindrical nozzle into a stagnant viscous phase via a hybrid interface-tracking/level-set method to account for the surface tension forces in a three-dimensional Cartesian domain. Numerical solutions are obtained for a range of Reynolds (Re) and Weber (We) numbers. We find that the interplay between the azimuthal and streamwise vorticity components leads to different interfacial features and flow regimes in Re-We space. We show that the streamwise vorticity plays a critical role in the development of the three-dimensional instabilities on the jet surface. In the inertia-controlled regime at high Re and We, we expose the details of the spatio-temporal development of the vortical structures affecting the interfacial dynamics. A mushroom-like structure is formed at the leading edge of the jet inducing the generation of a liquid sheet in its interior that undergoes rupture to form droplets. These droplets rotate inside the mushroom structure due to their interaction with the prevailing vortical structures. Additionally, Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices that form near the injection point deform in the streamwise direction to form hairpin vortices, which, in turn, trigger the formation of interfacial lobes in the jet core. The thinning of the lobes induces the creation of holes which expand to form liquid threads that undergo capillary breakup to form droplets.
The statistics of Lagrangian particles in turbulent flows is considered in the framework of a simple vortex model. Here, the turbulent velocity field is represented by a temporal sequence of Burgers vortices of different circulation, strain, and orientation. Based on suitable assumptions about the vortices' statistical properties, the statistics of the velocity increments is derived. In particular, the origin and nature of small-scale intermittency in this model is investigated both numerically and analytically.

Numerical simulations of turbulent round jets, using explicit-filtered LES technique, are performed, for three different Reynolds numbers(Re = 3600, 88000, 400000), to understand the Reynolds number effect on subsonic jets with Mach number 0.9. Eigth-order compact schemes are used for spatial derivative estimation. Second order Runge-Kutta method is used for Time evolution of flow. One-parameter fourth-order compact filter is used for low-pass explicit filtering of transported variables. Decreased centreline axial velocity decay rate and reduced turbulence intensities are observed as jet Reyno…
We employ detailed numerical simulations to probe the mechanism of flow reversals in two-dimensional turbulent convection. We show that the reversals occur via vortex reconnection of two attracting corner rolls having same sign of vorticity, thus leading to major restructuring of the flow. Large fluctuations in heat transport are observed during the reversal due to this flow reconfiguration. The flow configurations during the reversals have been analyzed quantitatively using large-scale modes. Using these tools, we also show why flow reversals occur for a restricted range of Rayleigh and Prand…
Closed-loop control of turbulent flows is a challenging problem with important practical and fundamental implications. We perform closed-loop control of forced, turbulent jets based on a wave-cancellation strategy. The study is motivated by the success of recent studies in applying wave cancellation to control instability waves in transitional boundary layers and free-shear flows. Using a control law obtained through a system-identification technique, we successfully implement wave-cancellation-based, closed-loop control, achieving order-of-magnitude attenuations of velocity fluctuations. Cont…
This paper presents a study on wave cancellation in forced jets. Building on recent work on real-time control of forced turbulent jets [1,2], we here assess the effect of jet upstream conditions and nonlinearity on wave-cancellation performance. The experiments are performed in jets with laminar and turbulent boundary layers inside the nozzle. An open-loop campaign is first conducted, in which the goal is to analyse the jet response to stochastic forcing with variable bandwidth. The upstream conditions of the jet are found to have a strong influence on the jet response. For narrow forcing band…
It is extremely uncommon to be able to predict the velocity profile of a turbulent flow. In two-dimensional flows, atmosphere dynamics, and plasma physics, large scale coherent jets are created through inverse energy transfers from small scales to the largest scales of the flow. We prove that in the limits of vanishing energy injection, vanishing friction, and small scale forcing, the velocity profile of a jet obeys an equation independent of the details of the forcing. We find another general relation for the maximal curvature of a jet and we give strong arguments to support the existence of …
Experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the dispersion of turbulent jets issuing from realistic pipe geometries. The effect of jet densities and Reynolds numbers on vertical buoyant jets were investigated, as they emerged from the side wall of a circular pipe, through a round orifice. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques were employed simultaneously to provide time-averaged flow velocity and concentrations fields. Large eddy simulation (LES) was applied to provide further detail with regards to the three-dimensiona…
The small-scale statistical properties of velocity circulation in classical homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flows are assessed through a modeling framework that brings together the multiplicative cascade and the structural descriptions of turbulence. We find that vortex structures exhibit short-distance repulsive correlations, which is evidenced when they are "tomographically" investigated, by means of planar cuts of the flow, as two-dimensional vortex gases. This phenomenon is suggested from model improvements which allow us to obtain an accurate multiscale description of the intermittent…
Numerical simulation of high-speed turbulent water jets in air and its validation with experimental data has not been reported in the literature. It is therefore aimed to simulate the physics of these high-speed water jets and compare the results with the existing experimental works. High-speed water jets diffuse in the surrounding atmosphere by the processes of mass and momentum transfer. Air is entrained into the jet stream and the entire process contributes to jet spreading and subsequent pressure decay. Hence the physical problem is in the category of multiphase flows, for which mass and m…
Direct numerical simulations of free round jets at a Reynolds number ($Re_{D}$) of $5000$, based on jet diameter ($D$) and jet-exit bulk velocity ($U_{e}$), are performed to study jet turbulence characteristics at supercritical pressures. The jet consists of $\mathrm{N_{2}}$ that is injected into $\mathrm{N_{2}}$ at same temperature. To understand turbulent mixing, a passive scalar is transported with the flow at unity Schmidt number. Two sets of inflow conditions that model jets issuing from either a smooth contraction nozzle (laminar inflow) or a long pipe nozzle (turbulent inflow) are consi…
Energy dissipation and pressure fluctuations are features inherent to turbulent fluid motion, and the internal origin of spatial and temporal temperature fluctuations. By measuring local velocity, pressure or temperature, it is possible to detect the presence of coherent structures ---like concentrated vortices--- and quantify their intensity. Here we report measurements of speed and temperature in a filamentary vortex lying in a strongly stretched turbulent airflow. The largest core temperature drop measured in our experiment was $ΔT = 9$ K, while the fastest measured air speed was $v_{max} =…
We consider analytically pair structure function of turbulent pulsations on the background of a coherent geostrophic vortex in a fast rotating fluid. The statistics of the turbulent pulsation is determined by their dynamics which is the dynamics of inertia waves affected by the differential rotation in the vortex and weak viscous damping. Our consideration is restricted by the smallest scales, where the velocity field remains smooth. We establish the anisotropy of the structure function. The velocity gradient of the turbulent pulsations achieves its largest value for the radial direction and i…
In this study, the thermochemical state during turbulent flame-wall interaction of a stoichiometric methane-air flame is investigated using a fully resolved simulation with detailed chemistry. The turbulent side-wall quenching flame shows both head-on quenching and side-wall quenching-like behavior that significantly affects the CO formation in the near-wall region. The detailed insights from the simulation are used to evaluate a recently proposed flame (tip) vortex interaction mechanism identified from experiments on turbulent side-wall quenching. It describes the entrainment of burnt gases i…
Many natural and technical processes deal with the turbulent mixing and heat transfer in the jet of mutually immiscible liquids, which represent an important class of the modern multiphase systems dynamics. The differential equations for axisymmetrical two-dimensional stationary flow and the integral correlations in a cylindrical coordinate system are considered for the free and confined jets. The parameters of the turbulent mixing in a free jet and in two-phase flow in a chamber are modelled and analyzed. One example is also done for high-temperature flow of the liquid metal melt cooled by wa…
In light of recent renewed interest in streaks in turbulent jets, the current work explores their coexistence with vortex rings in the near field of turbulent round jets. A Reynolds number, $Re=1.5 \times 10^5$ jet is studied at two diameters downstream of the nozzle, using high-speed stereo particle image velocimetry. The spectra of individual velocity components reveal radially localized signatures of the large scale structures. The radial shapes of the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition modes corresponding to the signatures, confirm the presence of high speed streaks in the outer edge…
The transfer of kinetic energy from large to small scales is a hallmark of turbulent flows. Yet, a precise mechanistic description of this transfer, which is expected to occur via an energy cascade, is still missing. Several conceptually simple configurations with vortex tubes have been proposed as a testing ground to understand the energy cascade. Here, we focus on incompressible flows and compare the energy transfer occurring in a statistically steady homogeneous isotropic turbulent (HIT) flow with the generation of fine-scale motions in configurations involving vortex tubes. We start by fil…
In this study, we investigate the interaction between vortex rings behind MVG and the oblique shocks in the MVG controlled ramp flow at M=2.5 and Req=5760. Implicit large eddy simulation (ILES) method is used by solving the unfiltered form of the Navier-Stokes equations with the 5th order Bandwidth-optimized WENO scheme. The fully developed inflow is given by a series of turbulent profiles obtained from previous DNS simulation. It shows that the ring structure does not break down and keeps its topology after penetrating the strong shock wave and the oblique shocks is influenced a lot by the in…
It has long been established that turbulent jets comprise large-scale coherent structures, now more commonly referred to as "wavepackets". These structures exhibit a remarkable spatio-temporal organisation, despite turbulence. In this work we analyse, from a qualitative point of view, the temporal dynamics of axisymmetric wavepackets educed, experimentally, from subsonic iso-thermal jets. We use the data presented by, where time-series of the wavepackets are extracted at different streamwise locations. A thorough analysis is performed, statistical tools are used for estimating the embedding an…
Buoyancy effects and nozzle geometry can have a significant impact on turbulent jet dispersion. This work was motivated by applications involving hydrogen. Using helium as an experimental proxy, buoyant horizontal jets issuing from a round orifice on the side wall of a circular tube were analysed experimentally using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques simultaneously to provide instantaneous and time-averaged flow fields of velocity and concentration. Effects of buoyancy and asymmetry on the resulting flow structure were studied over a range…
In three dimensional turbulence there is on average a cascade of kinetic energy from the largest to the smallest scales of the flow. While the dominant idea is that the cascade occurs through the physical process of vortex stretching, evidence for this is debated. In the framework of the Karman-Howarth equation for the two point turbulent kinetic energy, we derive a new result for the average flux of kinetic energy between two points in the flow that reveals the role of vortex stretching. However, the result shows that vortex stretching is in fact not the main contributor to the average energy…
In melt-blowing processes mico- and nanofibers are produced by the extrusion of polymeric jets into a directed, turbulent high-speed airflow. Up to now the physical mechanism for the drastic jet thinning is not fully understood, since in the existing literature the numerically computed/predicted fiber thickness differs several orders of magnitude from those experimentally measured. Recent works suggest that this discrepancy might arise from the neglect of the turbulent aerodynamic fluctuations in the simulations. In this paper we confirm this suggestion numerically. Due to the complexity of th…
We study the self-similarity and dissipation scalings of a turbulent planar jet and the theoretically implied mean flow scalings. Unlike turbulent wakes where such studies have already been carried out (Dairay et al. 2015; Obligado et al. 2016), this is a boundary- free turbulent shear flow where the local Reynolds number increases with distance from inlet. The Townsend-George theory revised by Dairay et al. (2015) is applied to turbulent planar jets. Only a few profiles need to be self-similar in this theory. The self- similarity of mean flow, turbulence dissipation, turbulent kinetic energy …
We perform direct numerical simulations of rotating Rayleigh--Bénard convection of fluids with low ($Pr=0.1$) and high ($Pr=5$) Prandtl numbers in a horizontally periodic layer with no-slip top and bottom boundaries. At both Prandtl numbers, we demonstrate the presence of an upscale transfer of kinetic energy that leads to the development of domain-filling vortical structures. Sufficiently strong buoyant forcing and rotation foster the quasi-two-dimensional turbulent state of the flow, despite the formation of plume-like vertical disturbances promoted by so-called Ekman pumping from the viscou…
Turbulence is hard to control. A plethora of experimental methods have been developed to generate this ephemeral state of matter, leading to fundamental insights into its statistical and structural features as well as its onset at ever higher Reynolds numbers. In all cases however, the central role played by the material boundaries of the apparatus poses a challenge on understanding what the turbulence has been fed, and how it would freely evolve. Here, we build and control a confined state of turbulence using only elemental building blocks: vortex rings. We create a stationary and isolated bl…
Vortex induced vibration (VIV) occurs when vortex shedding frequency falls close to the natural frequency of a structure. Investigation on VIV is of great value in disaster mitigation, energy extraction and other applications. Following recent development in machine learning on VIV in laminar flow, this study extends it to the turbulent region by employing the state-of-the-art parameterised Navier-Stokes equations based physics informed neural network (PNS-PINN). Turbulent flow with Reynolds number $Re$ = $10^4$, passing through a cylinder undergoing VIV motion, was considered as an example. W…
In this paper, the novel experimental data reported by Qin et al. [1] are used to assess the predictive capability of the Realizable k-epsilon (RKE) model and Reynolds stress transport (RST) model for buoyant jets and understand the reasons for discrepancies. In particular, we present the comparison between simulation results of a turbulent buoyant jet flow in the self-similar region with high-resolution experimental data obtained for a jet injected from a 2 mm nozzle into a 300x300x300 $mm^3$ tank, with nominal Reynolds number equal to 10,000. Results show that streamwise velocity profiles pr…
Vortex is a central concept in the understanding of turbulent dynamics. Objective algorithms for the detection and extraction of vortex structures can facilitate the physical understanding of turbulence regeneration dynamics by enabling automated and quantitative analyses of these structures. Despite the wide availability of vortex identification criteria, they only label spatial regions belonging to vortices, without any information on the identity, topology and shape of individual vortices. This latter information is stored in the axis lines lining the contours of vortex tubes. In this study…
We perform rescaled range analysis upon the signals measured by Dual Particle Dynamical Analyzer in gas-liquid two-phase turbulent jets. A novel rescaled range analysis is proposed to investigate these unevenly sampled signals. The Hurst exponents of velocity and other passive scalars in the bulk of spray are obtained to be 0.59$\pm $0.02 and the fractal dimension is hence 1.41$\pm $ 0.02, which are in remarkable agreement with and much more precise than previous results. These scaling exponents are found to be independent of the configuration and dimensions of the nozzle and the fluid flows. …
We present a new DNS data set for a statistically axisymmetric turbulent jet, plume and forced plume in a domain of size $40 r_0 \times 40 r_0 \times 60 r_0$, where $r_0$ is the source diameter. The data set provides evidence of the validity of the Priestley and Ball entrainment model in unstratified environments (excluding the region near the source), which is corroborated further by the Wang and Law and Ezzamel \emph{et al.} experimental data sets, the latter being corrected for a small but influential co-flow that affected the statistics. We show that the turbulence in the core region of th…
Direct numerical simulations of sub- and supersonic impinging jets with Reynolds numbers of 3300 and 8000 are carried out to analyse their statistical properties. The influence of the parameters Mach number, Reynolds number and ambient temperature on the mean velocity and temperature fields are studied. For the compressible subsonic cold impinging jets into a heated environment, different Reynolds analogies are assesses. It is shown, that the (original) Reynolds analogy as well as the Chilton Colburn analogy are in good agreement with the DNS data outside the impinging area. The generalised Re…
Motivated by experiments performed in superfluid helium, we study numerically the motion of toroidal bundles of vortex filaments in an inviscid fluid. We find that the evolution of these large-scale vortex structures involves the generalised leapfrogging of the constituent vortex rings. Despite three dimensional perturbations in the form of Kelvin waves and vortex reconnections, toroidal vortex bundles retain their coherence over a relatively large distance (compared to their size), in agreement with experimental observations.
Fundamental insight into the physics of buoyant gas dispersion from realistic flow geometries is necessary to accurately predict flow structures associated with hydrogen outflow from accidental leaks and the associated flammability envelope. Using helium as an experimental proxy, turbulent buoyant jets issuing from high-aspect-ratio slots on the side wall of a circular tube were studied experimentally applying simultaneous particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques. Two slots with an aspect ratio of 10 were considered in this study. The effects of …
In this work we study the scour produced by a jet downstream of a submerged sluice gate on a sediment bed of non-cohesive particles. The experiments were performed for various values of sill heights and °uid depths. New regimes were observed in which two holes are simultaneously developed. We identify the origins of the two holes and show that they are produced by different scouring mechanisms. The dependence of the position of the holes with the approach °uid depth and the gate opening were studied and expressed in terms of adequate non-dimensional numbers.
We study the effect of insoluble surfactants on the spatio-temporal evolution of turbulent jets. We use three-dimensional numerical simulations and employ an interface-tracking/level-set method that accounts for surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses. The present study builds on our previous work (Constante et al., 2021, J. Fluid Mech., 922, A6) in which we examined in detail the vortex-surface interaction in the absence of surfactants. Numerical solutions are obtained for a wide range of Weber and elasticity numbers in which vorticity production is generated by surface deformation and surfacta…
We show that enhanced turbulent mixing can be used to mitigate airborne COVID-19 transmission by dispersing virus-laden clouds in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces. A simple system of fan-driven turbulent jets is designed so as to minimize peak concentrations of passive contaminants on time scales short compared to the room ventilation time. Standard Reynolds-average and similarity methods are used, and combinations of circular and radial wall jets are considered. The turbulent diffusivity and contaminant mixing time are calculated. Results indicate that this approach can significantly reduce…
This study performs a large-eddy simulation of turbulent separated and reattached flow in an enlarged annular pipe. A vortex ring is periodically shed from the sudden expansion part. A longitudinal vortex occurs around the vortex ring, making the flow three-dimensional. As a result, the vortex ring becomes unstable downstream and splits into small vortices. A tubular longitudinal vortex structure occurs downstream of the reattachment point near the wall surface on the inner pipe side. A low-frequency fluctuation occurs at each pipe diameter ratio. The smaller the pipe diameter ratio is, the mo…
Three amplification mechanisms present in turbulent jets, namely lift-up, Kelvin-Helmholtz, and Orr, are characterized via global resolvent analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) over a range of Mach numbers. The lift-up mechanism was recently identified in turbulent jets via local analysis by Nogueira et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 873, 2019, pp. 211-237) at low Strouhal number ($St$) and non-zero azimuthal wavenumbers ($m$). In these limits, a global SPOD analysis of data from high-fidelity simulations reveals streamwise vortices and streaks similar to those found in turb…
The vortex dynamics resulting from the interaction of synthetic jets with turbulent boundary layers was investigated experimentally using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV). Three aspect ratio 18 rectangular orifice geometries were tested including spanwise and streamwise-oriented orifices issuing normal to the wall and a spanwise-oriented orifice pitched $45^\circ$ downstream. Additionally, three actuation conditions were tested to explore the impact of varying blowing ratio and Strouhal number. SPIV data obtained on an array of measurement planes was used to reconstruct the three…
Active flow control of canonical laminar separation bubbles by steady and harmonic vortex generator jets (VGJs) was investigated using direct numerical simulations. Both control strategies were found to be effective in controlling the laminar boundary-layer separation. However, the present results indicate that using the same blowing amplitude, harmonic VGJs were more effective and efficient in reducing the separated region than the steady VGJs considering the fact that the harmonic VGJs use less momentum than the steady case. For steady VGJs, longitudinal structures formed immediately downstr…
We study the 3D topology of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) and Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) single-modes, which includes bubbles, jets and saddle points. We present an analytic description of the interface as a whole, for arbitrary time-dependant acceleration g(t). The dependance of morphology on the lattice - Hexagonal, square or triangular -of bubbles are investigated. RM accelerations in the case of a large density ratio produce jets well separated from each other while, in RT case, jets are connected by liquid sheets. We compare our analytic results to numerical simulations.
Strong rotation makes an underlying turbulent flow quasi-two-dimensional that leads to the upscale energy transfer. Recent numerical simulations show that under certain conditions, the energy is accumulated at the largest scales of the system, forming coherent vortex structures known as condensates. We analytically describe the interaction of a strong condensate with weak small-scale turbulent pulsations and obtain an equation that allows us to determine the radial velocity profile $U(r)$ of a coherent vortex. When external rotation is fast, the velocity profiles of cyclones and anticyclones a…
We model the dynamics of Jupiter's jets by averaging the dynamics of eddies, in a barotropic beta-plane model, and explicitly predicting the balance between Reynolds' stresses and dissipation, thus predicting the average velocity profile explicitly. In order to obtain this result, we adopt a non-equilibrium statistical mechanics approach. We consider a relevant limit for Jupiter troposphere, of a time scale separation between inertial dynamics on one hand, and stochastic forcing and dissipation on the other hand. We assume that the forcing acts on scales much smaller than the jet scale, and we …
Response modes computed via linear resolvent analysis of a turbulent mean-flow field have been shown to qualitatively capture characteristics of the observed turbulent coherent structures in both wall-bounded and free shear flows. To make such resolvent models predictive, the nonlinear forcing term must be closed. Strategies to do so include imposing self-consistent sets of triadic interactions, proposing various source models, or through turbulence modelling. For the latter, several investigators have proposed using the mean-field eddy viscosity acting linearly on the fluctuation field. In th…
The relevance of the vortex-gas model to the large scale dynamics of temporally evolving turbulent free shear layers in an inviscid incompressible fluid has recently been established by extensive numerical simulations (Suryanarayanan et al, Phys. Rev. E 89, 013009, 2014). Here, the effects of the velocity ratio across a spatially evolving 2D free shear layer are investigated by vortex-gas simulations, using a computational model based on Basu et al (1992, 1995), but with a crucial improvement that ensures conservation of global circulation. These are carried out for a range of values of the ve…
A central but controversial issue in free turbulent shear flows has been the universality (or otherwise) of their growth rates. We resolve this issue here in the special case of a temporal 2D mixing layer in a point vortex gas by extensive high-precision numerical simulations, utilizing for the first time a powerful ensemble-averaging strategy. The simulations show that the momentum thickness of such a mixing layer grows at the universal asymptotic rate of 0.0167 +/- 0.00017 times the velocity differential across the layer over a wide range of initial conditions, often after very long transien…
Modal linear stability analysis has proven very successful in the analysis of coherent structures of turbulent flows. Formally, it describes the evolution of a disturbance in the limit of infinite time. In this work we apply modal linear stability analysis to a turbulent swirling jet undergoing a control parameter transient. The flow undergoes a transition from a non-vortex breakdown state to a state with a strong recirculation bubble and the associated global mode. High-speed Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements are the basis for a local linear stability analysis of the temporarily e…
In recent experiments, the relaxation dynamics of highly oblate, turbulent Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) was investigated by measuring the vortex decay rates in various sample conditions [Phys. Rev. A $\bf 90$, 063627 (2014)] and, separately, the thermal friction coefficient $α$ for vortex motion was measured from the long-time evolution of a corotating vortex pair in a BEC [Phys. Rev. A $\bf 92$, 051601(R) (2015)]. We present a comparative analysis of the experimental results, and find that the vortex decay rate $Γ$ is almost linearly proportional to $α$. We perform numerical simulations o…
A novel jet-stirred combustion chamber is designed to study turbulent premixed flames. In the new approach, multiple impinging turbulent jets are used to stir the mixture. It is well known that pair of counterflowing turbulent jets produces nearly a constant intensity along the jet axes. In this study, different numbers of impinging jets in various configurations are used to produce isotropic turbulence intensity. FLUENT simulations have been conducted to assess the viability of the proposed chamber. In order to be able to compare different configurations, three different non dimensional indic…
