We study the 3D topology of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) and Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) single-modes, which includes bubbles, jets and saddle points. We present an analytic description of the interface as a whole, for arbitrary time-dependant acceleration g(t). The dependance of morphology on the lattice - Hexagonal, square or triangular -of bubbles are investigated. RM accelerations in the case of a large density ratio produce jets well separated from each other while, in RT case, jets are connected by liquid sheets. We compare our analytic results to numerical simulations.
We study the late time flow structure of Richtmyer-Meshkov instability. Recent numerical work has suggested a self-similar collapse of the development of this instability at late times, independent of the initial surface profile. Using the form of collapse suggested, we derive an analytic expression for the mass-velocity relation in the spikes, and a global theory for the late time flow structure. We compare these results with fluid dynamical simulation.
Development of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability leads to mixing of two substances separated by contact boundary. Mixture of two fluids is confined between two mixing fronts. Universal asymptotics follows the transition stage at late time. Functions which describe the fronts penetration asymptoticaly transform to power law dependences. Mixing is acompanied by cascade of enlarging of dominant scale of a turbulent mixing zone. The exponents of the power laws are: 2/5 for 2D and 1/3 for 3D cases. These exact exponents are calculated in our work. They are determined by the mechanism of redistribut…
The Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) refers to the baroclinic generation of vorticity at a perturbed density interface when impacted by a shock wave. It is often thought of as the impulsive limit of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI). The fluid dynamics video "large-eddy simulations (LES) of RMI in a converging geometry" shows the mixing of materials resulting from the interaction of an imploding cylindrical shock wave with a concentric perturbed interface that separates outside light gas from heavy gas (initially 5 times denser) inside a wedge. At the initial impact, the incident shock …
The interaction of a Mach 1.45 shock wave with a perturbed planar interface between sulphur hexafluoride and air is studied through high-resolution two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) shock-capturing adaptive mesh refinement simulations of multi-species Navier-Stokes equations. The sensitivities of time-dependent statistics on grid resolution for 2D and 3D simulations are evaluated to ensure the accuracy of the results. The numerical results are used to examine the differences between the development of 2D and 3D Richtmyer-Meshkov instability during two different stages: (1) initia…
We study the growth of Richtmyer-Meshkov mixing layers from an initial surface with spatially localized perturbations. We use two symmetric forms of the initial patch, which allow simulation data to be averaged to generate a two-dimensional statistical representation of the three dimensional turbulent flow. We find that as the mixing layer grows, the turbulent structures tend to form into discrete packets separated from the surface, with material entrainment into them dominated by a laminar entrainment flow inward from the surrounding regions where the surface was originally smooth. The entrai…
Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) plays an important role in many areas of science and engineering, from supernovae and fusion to scramjets and nano-fabrication. Classical Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is induced by a steady shock and impulsive acceleration, whereas in realistic environments the acceleration is usually variable. We focus on RMI induced by acceleration with power-law time-dependence and apply group theory to solve the long-standing problem. For early-time dynamics, we find the dependence of the growth-rate on the initial conditions and show that it is independent of the accel…
The mean momentum and heavy mass fraction, turbulent kinetic energy, and heavy mass fraction variance fields, as well as the budgets of their transport equations, are examined at several times during the evolution of a narrowband Richtmyer-Meshkov instability initiated by a Mach 1.84 shock traversing a perturbed interface separating gases with a density ratio of 3. The results are computed using the `quarter scale' data from four algorithms presented in the θ-group study of Thornber et al. [Phys. Fluids 29, 105107 (2017)]. The present study is inspired by a previous similar study of Rayleigh-T…
Nonlinear Richtmyer--Meshkov instability and mixing transition induced by a Mach 1.45 shock and subsequent re-shock at an interface between two ideal gases (sulfur hexafluoride and air) with high Atwood number are studied with second-moment analysis using data from high-resolution compressible Navier--Stokes simulations. The analysis first addresses the importance of two second-order moments: turbulent mass flux and density-specific-volume covariance, together with their transport equations. These quantities play an essential role in the development of Favre-averaged Reynolds stress and turbul…
We investigate the shock-induced turbulent mixing between a light and heavy gas, where a Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) is initiated by a $\Ma = 1.5$ shock wave. The prescribed initial conditions define a deterministic multimode interface perturbation between the gases, which can be imposed exactly for different simulation codes and resolutions to allow for quantitative comparison. Well-resolved large-eddy simulations are performed using two different and independently developed numerical methods with the objective of assessing turbulence structures, prediction uncertainties and convergen…
The Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability has long been an interesting subject due to its fundamental significance in scientific research, as well as its crucial role in engineering applications. In this study, the contribution of shock Mach number on the evolution of the RM instability induced by a shock-accelerated square light bubble is investigated numerically. The square bubble is composed of helium gas and the surrounding (ambient) gas is nitrogen. Three cases of incident shock strength are considered: Ms = 1.21, 1.7, and 2.1. An explicit mixed-type modal discontinuous Galerkin scheme with …
The classical Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is a hydrodynamic instability characterizing the evolution of an interface following shock loading. In contrast to other hydrodynamic instabilities such as Rayleigh-Taylor, it is known for being unconditionally unstable: regardless of the direction of shock passage, any deviations from a flat interface will be amplified. In this article, we show that for negative Atwood numbers, there exist special sequences of shocks which result in a nearly perfectly suppressed instability growth. We demonstrate this principle computationally and experimentally wit…
We provide numerical evidence that the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability contributes to the cooling of a relativistic fluid. Due to the presence of jet particles traveling throughout the medium, shock waves are generated in the form of Mach cones. The interaction of multiple shock waves can trigger the RM instability, and we have found that this process leads to a down-cooling of the relativistic fluid. To confirm the cooling effect of the instability, shock tube Richtmyer-Meshkov instability simulations are performed. Additionally, in order to provide an experimental observable of the RM ins…
The two-dimensional Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability(RMI) system and the coexisting system combined with Rayleigh-Taylor Instability(RTI) are simulated with a multiple-relaxation time discrete Boltzmann model. It is found that, for the RMI system, the correlation between globally averaged non-organized energy flux and nonuniformity of temperature is nearly 1; the correlation between globally averaged non-organized momentum flux and nonuniformity of velocity and that between globally averaged thermodynamic non-equilibrium strength and nonuniformity of density are also high. In the coexisting syste…
The two-fluid (ions and electrons) plasma Richtmyer-Meshkov instability of a cylindrical light/heavy density interface is numerically investigated without an initial magnetic field. Varying the Debye length scale, we examine the effects of the coupling between the electron and ion fluids. When the coupling becomes strong, the electrons are restricted to co-move with the ions and the resulting evolution is similar to the hydrodynamic neutral fluid case. The charge separation that occurs between the electrons and ions results in self-generated electromagnetic fields. We show that the Biermann ba…
Shock flame interactions are fundamental problems in many combustion applications ranging from flame acceleration to flame control in supersonic propulsion applications. The present paper seeks to quantify the rate of deformation of the flame surface and burning velocity caused by the interaction and to clarify the underlying mechanisms. The interaction of a single shock wave with a cellular flame in a Hele-Shaw shock tube configuration was studied experimentally, numerically, and theoretically. A mixture of stoichiometric hydrogen-air at sub-atmospheric pressure was chosen such that large cel…
The impact and rupture of water-filled balloons upon a flat, rigid surface is studied experimentally, for which three distinct stages of the flow are observed. Due to the impact, waves are formed on the balloon's surface for which the restoring force is tension in the latex. Immediately following rupture of the membrane, a shear instability created by the retraction of the balloon is observed. At later times, a larger-scale growth of the interfacial amplitude is observed, that may be regarded as a manifestation of a phenomenon known as the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability. This flow is closely re…

The shock induced mixing of two gases separated by a perturbed interface is investigated through Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). In a simulation, physical dissipation of the velocity field and species mass fraction often compete with numerical dissipation arising from the errors of the numerical method. In a DNS the computational mesh resolves all physical gradients of the flow and the relative effect of numerical dissipation is small. In LES, unresolved scales are present and numerical dissipation can have a large impact on the flow, depending on the computa…
Turbulent Richtmyer--Meshkov instability (RMI) is investigated through a series of high resolution three dimensional smulations of two initial conditions with eight independent codes. The simulations are initialised with a narrowband perturbation such that instability growth is due to non-linear coupling/backscatter from the energetic modes, thus generating the lowest expected growth rate from a pure RMI. By independently assessing the results from each algorithm, and computing ensemble averages of multiple algorithms, the results allow a quantification of key flow properties as well as the un…
This paper investigates the influence of different broadband perturbations on the evolution of a Richtmyer--Meshkov turbulent mixing layer initiated by a Mach 1.84 shock traversing a perturbed interface separating gases with a density ratio of 3:1. Both the bandwidth of modes in the interface perturbation, as well as their relative amplitudes, are varied in a series of carefully designed numerical simulations at grid resolutions up to $3.2\times10^9$ cells. Three different perturbations are considered, characterised by a power spectrum of the form $P(k)\propto k^m$ where $m=-1$, $-2$ and $-3$.…

Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability (RMI) is a complicated phenomenon that occurs when a shockwave passes through a perturbed interface. Over a thousand hydrodynamic simulations were performed to study the formation of RMI for a parameterized high velocity impact. Deep learning was used to learn the temporal mapping of initial geometric perturbations to the full-field hydrodynamic solutions of density and velocity. The continuity equation was used to include physical information into the loss function, however only resulted in very minor improvements at the cost of additional training complexity. Pr…
Theoretical and numerical analysis of the relativistic effects on the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability reveals new and potentially very useful effects. We find that, in contrast with the non- relativistic case, the growth rate of the RM instability depends strongly on the equation of state of the fluid, opening up the possibility to infer equations of state from experimental observations of the RM instability. As opposed to the non-relativistic case, we also discover that, above a critical value of the fluid velocity, the growth rate of the instability counter-intuitively decreases due to th…
We study the Richtmyer--Meshkov (RM) instability of a relativistic perfect fluid by means of high order numerical simulations with adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). The numerical scheme adopts a finite volume Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) reconstruction to increase accuracy in space, a local space-time discontinuous Galerkin predictor method to obtain high order of accuracy in time and a high order one-step time update scheme together with a "cell-by-cell" space-time AMR strategy with time-accurate local time stepping. In this way, third order accurate (both in space and in time) n…

The compression of a cylindrical gas bubble by an imploding molten lead (Pb) shell may be accompanied by the development of the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability at the liquid-gas interface due to the initial imperfection of the interface. A converging pressure wave impinging upon the interface causes a shell of liquid to detach and continue to travel inwards, compressing the gas bubble. The efficiency of compression and collapse evolution can be affected by development of the RM instability. Investigations have been performed in the regime of extreme Atwood number $A=-1$ with the additional …
Early to intermediate time behaviour of the planar Richtmyer--Meshkov instability (RMI) is investigated through direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the evolution of a deterministic interfacial perturbation initiated by a $\textrm{Ma}=1.84$ shock. The model problem is the well studied initial condition from the recent $θ$-group collaboration [Phys. Fluids. 29 (2017) 105107]. A grid convergence study demonstrates that the Kolmogorov microscales are resolved by the finest grid for the entire duration of the simulation, and that both integral and spectral quantities of interest are converged. We develop a novel multiscale model of interface motion for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) for two-dimensional, inviscid, compressible flows with vorticity, which yields a fast-running numerical algorithm that produces both qualitatively and quantitatively similar results to a resolved gas dynamics code, while running approximately two orders of magnitude (in time) faster. Our multiscale model is founded upon a new compressible-incompressible decomposition of the velocity field $u=v+w$. The incompressible component $w$ of the velocity is also irro…
Rayleigh-Taylor interfacial mixing has critical importance in a broad range of processes in nature and technology. In most instances Rayleigh-Taylor dynamics is induced by variable acceleration, whereas the bulk of existing studies is focused on the cases of constant and impulsive accelerations referred respectively as classical Rayleigh-Taylor and classical Richtmyer-Meshkov dynamics. In this work we consider Rayleigh-Taylor mixing induced by variable acceleration with power-law dependence on the spatial coordinate in the acceleration direction. We apply group theory and momentum model to fin…
The multiplicity of routes from deterministic chaos to turbulence caused by the spontaneous breaking of the local reflectional symmetry in the flows induced by Rayleigh-Taylor instability has been studied using the notion of distributed chaos. Results of numerical simulations, and laboratory and oceanic measurements have been used for this purpose. Small-scale chaotic MHD dynamo and chaotic Richtmyer-Meshkov mixing layer have been briefly discussed in this context.
The mixing of materials due to the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability and the ensuing turbulent behavior is of intense interest in a variety of physical systems including inertial confinement fusion, combustion, and the final stages of stellar evolution. Extensive numerical and laboratory studies of shock-driven mixing have demonstrated the rich behavior associated with the onset of turbulence due to the shocks. Here we report on progress in understanding shock-driven mixing at interfaces between fluids of differing densities through 3D numerical simulations using the RAGE code in the implicit larg…
Jets from active galactic nuclei in the centers of galaxy clusters inflate cavities of low density relativistic plasma and drive shock and sound waves into the intracluster medium. When these waves overrun previously inflated cavities, they form a differentially rotating vortex through the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability. The dissipation of energy captured in the vortex can contribute to the feedback of energy into the atmospheres of cool core clusters. Using a series of hydrodynamic simulations we investigate the efficiency of this process: we calculate the kinetic energy in the vortex by decom…
In the present paper, an efficient method to generate "pure" cylindrically converging shock wave without a following contact surface is proposed firstly. Then, the Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities of two interfaces driven by the generated cylindrically converging shock wave and the associated fluids' mixing behaviors are numerically studied. The results show that the instability of the interface is characterized by the growth of perturbation amplitude before re-shock. However, the mixing of fluids is enhanced dramatically after re-shock, which is manifested not only by the evolutions of flow st…

(Abridged) A series of three-dimensional numerical simulations is used to study the intrinsic stability of high-speed turbulent flames. Calculations model the interaction of a fully-resolved premixed flame with a highly subsonic, statistically steady, homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. We consider a wide range of turbulent intensities and system sizes, corresponding to the Damköhler numbers Da = 0.1-6.0. These calculations show that turbulent flames in the regimes considered are intrinsically unstable. In particular, we find three effects. 1) Turbulent flame speed develops pulsations with the …
We investigate the linear evolution of Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability in the framework of an ideal two-fluid plasma model. The two-fluid plasma equations of motion are separated into a base state and a set of linearized equations governing the evolution of the perturbations. Different coupling regimes between the charged species are distinguished based on a non-dimensional Debye length parameter $d_{D,0}$. When $d_{D,0}$ is large, the coupling between ions and electrons is sufficiently small that the induced Lorentz force is very weak and the two species evolve as two separate fluids. When…
This work describes three diffuse-interface methods for the simulation of immiscible, compressible multiphase fluid flows and elastic-plastic deformation in solids. The first method is the localized-artificial-diffusivity approach of Cook (2007), Subramaniam et al., (2018), and Adler and Lele (2019), in which artificial diffusion terms are added to the conservation equations. The second method is the gradient-form approach that is based on the quasi-conservative method of Shukla et al., (2010) and Tiwari et al., (2013), in which the diffusion and sharpening terms (together called regularizatio…
