Numerical simulations of turbulent round jets, using explicit-filtered LES technique, are performed, for three different Reynolds numbers(Re = 3600, 88000, 400000), to understand the Reynolds number effect on subsonic jets with Mach number 0.9. Eigth-order compact schemes are used for spatial derivative estimation. Second order Runge-Kutta method is used for Time evolution of flow. One-parameter fourth-order compact filter is used for low-pass explicit filtering of transported variables. Decreased centreline axial velocity decay rate and reduced turbulence intensities are observed as jet Reyno…
Closed-loop control of turbulent flows is a challenging problem with important practical and fundamental implications. We perform closed-loop control of forced, turbulent jets based on a wave-cancellation strategy. The study is motivated by the success of recent studies in applying wave cancellation to control instability waves in transitional boundary layers and free-shear flows. Using a control law obtained through a system-identification technique, we successfully implement wave-cancellation-based, closed-loop control, achieving order-of-magnitude attenuations of velocity fluctuations. Cont…
This paper presents a study on wave cancellation in forced jets. Building on recent work on real-time control of forced turbulent jets [1,2], we here assess the effect of jet upstream conditions and nonlinearity on wave-cancellation performance. The experiments are performed in jets with laminar and turbulent boundary layers inside the nozzle. An open-loop campaign is first conducted, in which the goal is to analyse the jet response to stochastic forcing with variable bandwidth. The upstream conditions of the jet are found to have a strong influence on the jet response. For narrow forcing band…
It is extremely uncommon to be able to predict the velocity profile of a turbulent flow. In two-dimensional flows, atmosphere dynamics, and plasma physics, large scale coherent jets are created through inverse energy transfers from small scales to the largest scales of the flow. We prove that in the limits of vanishing energy injection, vanishing friction, and small scale forcing, the velocity profile of a jet obeys an equation independent of the details of the forcing. We find another general relation for the maximal curvature of a jet and we give strong arguments to support the existence of …
Experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the dispersion of turbulent jets issuing from realistic pipe geometries. The effect of jet densities and Reynolds numbers on vertical buoyant jets were investigated, as they emerged from the side wall of a circular pipe, through a round orifice. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques were employed simultaneously to provide time-averaged flow velocity and concentrations fields. Large eddy simulation (LES) was applied to provide further detail with regards to the three-dimensiona…
Numerical simulation of high-speed turbulent water jets in air and its validation with experimental data has not been reported in the literature. It is therefore aimed to simulate the physics of these high-speed water jets and compare the results with the existing experimental works. High-speed water jets diffuse in the surrounding atmosphere by the processes of mass and momentum transfer. Air is entrained into the jet stream and the entire process contributes to jet spreading and subsequent pressure decay. Hence the physical problem is in the category of multiphase flows, for which mass and m…
Direct numerical simulations of free round jets at a Reynolds number ($Re_{D}$) of $5000$, based on jet diameter ($D$) and jet-exit bulk velocity ($U_{e}$), are performed to study jet turbulence characteristics at supercritical pressures. The jet consists of $\mathrm{N_{2}}$ that is injected into $\mathrm{N_{2}}$ at same temperature. To understand turbulent mixing, a passive scalar is transported with the flow at unity Schmidt number. Two sets of inflow conditions that model jets issuing from either a smooth contraction nozzle (laminar inflow) or a long pipe nozzle (turbulent inflow) are consi…
Many natural and technical processes deal with the turbulent mixing and heat transfer in the jet of mutually immiscible liquids, which represent an important class of the modern multiphase systems dynamics. The differential equations for axisymmetrical two-dimensional stationary flow and the integral correlations in a cylindrical coordinate system are considered for the free and confined jets. The parameters of the turbulent mixing in a free jet and in two-phase flow in a chamber are modelled and analyzed. One example is also done for high-temperature flow of the liquid metal melt cooled by wa…
It has long been established that turbulent jets comprise large-scale coherent structures, now more commonly referred to as "wavepackets". These structures exhibit a remarkable spatio-temporal organisation, despite turbulence. In this work we analyse, from a qualitative point of view, the temporal dynamics of axisymmetric wavepackets educed, experimentally, from subsonic iso-thermal jets. We use the data presented by, where time-series of the wavepackets are extracted at different streamwise locations. A thorough analysis is performed, statistical tools are used for estimating the embedding an…
Buoyancy effects and nozzle geometry can have a significant impact on turbulent jet dispersion. This work was motivated by applications involving hydrogen. Using helium as an experimental proxy, buoyant horizontal jets issuing from a round orifice on the side wall of a circular tube were analysed experimentally using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques simultaneously to provide instantaneous and time-averaged flow fields of velocity and concentration. Effects of buoyancy and asymmetry on the resulting flow structure were studied over a range…
In melt-blowing processes mico- and nanofibers are produced by the extrusion of polymeric jets into a directed, turbulent high-speed airflow. Up to now the physical mechanism for the drastic jet thinning is not fully understood, since in the existing literature the numerically computed/predicted fiber thickness differs several orders of magnitude from those experimentally measured. Recent works suggest that this discrepancy might arise from the neglect of the turbulent aerodynamic fluctuations in the simulations. In this paper we confirm this suggestion numerically. Due to the complexity of th…
We study the self-similarity and dissipation scalings of a turbulent planar jet and the theoretically implied mean flow scalings. Unlike turbulent wakes where such studies have already been carried out (Dairay et al. 2015; Obligado et al. 2016), this is a boundary- free turbulent shear flow where the local Reynolds number increases with distance from inlet. The Townsend-George theory revised by Dairay et al. (2015) is applied to turbulent planar jets. Only a few profiles need to be self-similar in this theory. The self- similarity of mean flow, turbulence dissipation, turbulent kinetic energy …
In light of recent renewed interest in streaks in turbulent jets, the current work explores their coexistence with vortex rings in the near field of turbulent round jets. A Reynolds number, $Re=1.5 \times 10^5$ jet is studied at two diameters downstream of the nozzle, using high-speed stereo particle image velocimetry. The spectra of individual velocity components reveal radially localized signatures of the large scale structures. The radial shapes of the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition modes corresponding to the signatures, confirm the presence of high speed streaks in the outer edge…
In this paper, the novel experimental data reported by Qin et al. [1] are used to assess the predictive capability of the Realizable k-epsilon (RKE) model and Reynolds stress transport (RST) model for buoyant jets and understand the reasons for discrepancies. In particular, we present the comparison between simulation results of a turbulent buoyant jet flow in the self-similar region with high-resolution experimental data obtained for a jet injected from a 2 mm nozzle into a 300x300x300 $mm^3$ tank, with nominal Reynolds number equal to 10,000. Results show that streamwise velocity profiles pr…
We perform rescaled range analysis upon the signals measured by Dual Particle Dynamical Analyzer in gas-liquid two-phase turbulent jets. A novel rescaled range analysis is proposed to investigate these unevenly sampled signals. The Hurst exponents of velocity and other passive scalars in the bulk of spray are obtained to be 0.59$\pm $0.02 and the fractal dimension is hence 1.41$\pm $ 0.02, which are in remarkable agreement with and much more precise than previous results. These scaling exponents are found to be independent of the configuration and dimensions of the nozzle and the fluid flows. …
We present a new DNS data set for a statistically axisymmetric turbulent jet, plume and forced plume in a domain of size $40 r_0 \times 40 r_0 \times 60 r_0$, where $r_0$ is the source diameter. The data set provides evidence of the validity of the Priestley and Ball entrainment model in unstratified environments (excluding the region near the source), which is corroborated further by the Wang and Law and Ezzamel \emph{et al.} experimental data sets, the latter being corrected for a small but influential co-flow that affected the statistics. We show that the turbulence in the core region of th…
Direct numerical simulations of sub- and supersonic impinging jets with Reynolds numbers of 3300 and 8000 are carried out to analyse their statistical properties. The influence of the parameters Mach number, Reynolds number and ambient temperature on the mean velocity and temperature fields are studied. For the compressible subsonic cold impinging jets into a heated environment, different Reynolds analogies are assesses. It is shown, that the (original) Reynolds analogy as well as the Chilton Colburn analogy are in good agreement with the DNS data outside the impinging area. The generalised Re…
Fundamental insight into the physics of buoyant gas dispersion from realistic flow geometries is necessary to accurately predict flow structures associated with hydrogen outflow from accidental leaks and the associated flammability envelope. Using helium as an experimental proxy, turbulent buoyant jets issuing from high-aspect-ratio slots on the side wall of a circular tube were studied experimentally applying simultaneous particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques. Two slots with an aspect ratio of 10 were considered in this study. The effects of …
In this work we study the scour produced by a jet downstream of a submerged sluice gate on a sediment bed of non-cohesive particles. The experiments were performed for various values of sill heights and °uid depths. New regimes were observed in which two holes are simultaneously developed. We identify the origins of the two holes and show that they are produced by different scouring mechanisms. The dependence of the position of the holes with the approach °uid depth and the gate opening were studied and expressed in terms of adequate non-dimensional numbers.
We show that enhanced turbulent mixing can be used to mitigate airborne COVID-19 transmission by dispersing virus-laden clouds in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces. A simple system of fan-driven turbulent jets is designed so as to minimize peak concentrations of passive contaminants on time scales short compared to the room ventilation time. Standard Reynolds-average and similarity methods are used, and combinations of circular and radial wall jets are considered. The turbulent diffusivity and contaminant mixing time are calculated. Results indicate that this approach can significantly reduce…
Three amplification mechanisms present in turbulent jets, namely lift-up, Kelvin-Helmholtz, and Orr, are characterized via global resolvent analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) over a range of Mach numbers. The lift-up mechanism was recently identified in turbulent jets via local analysis by Nogueira et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 873, 2019, pp. 211-237) at low Strouhal number ($St$) and non-zero azimuthal wavenumbers ($m$). In these limits, a global SPOD analysis of data from high-fidelity simulations reveals streamwise vortices and streaks similar to those found in turb…

We study the effect of insoluble surfactants on the spatio-temporal evolution of turbulent jets. We use three-dimensional numerical simulations and employ an interface-tracking/level-set method that accounts for surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses. The present study builds on our previous work (Constante et al., 2021, J. Fluid Mech., 922, A6) in which we examined in detail the vortex-surface interaction in the absence of surfactants. Numerical solutions are obtained for a wide range of Weber and elasticity numbers in which vorticity production is generated by surface deformation and surfacta…
We model the dynamics of Jupiter's jets by averaging the dynamics of eddies, in a barotropic beta-plane model, and explicitly predicting the balance between Reynolds' stresses and dissipation, thus predicting the average velocity profile explicitly. In order to obtain this result, we adopt a non-equilibrium statistical mechanics approach. We consider a relevant limit for Jupiter troposphere, of a time scale separation between inertial dynamics on one hand, and stochastic forcing and dissipation on the other hand. We assume that the forcing acts on scales much smaller than the jet scale, and we …
Response modes computed via linear resolvent analysis of a turbulent mean-flow field have been shown to qualitatively capture characteristics of the observed turbulent coherent structures in both wall-bounded and free shear flows. To make such resolvent models predictive, the nonlinear forcing term must be closed. Strategies to do so include imposing self-consistent sets of triadic interactions, proposing various source models, or through turbulence modelling. For the latter, several investigators have proposed using the mean-field eddy viscosity acting linearly on the fluctuation field. In th…
Modal linear stability analysis has proven very successful in the analysis of coherent structures of turbulent flows. Formally, it describes the evolution of a disturbance in the limit of infinite time. In this work we apply modal linear stability analysis to a turbulent swirling jet undergoing a control parameter transient. The flow undergoes a transition from a non-vortex breakdown state to a state with a strong recirculation bubble and the associated global mode. High-speed Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements are the basis for a local linear stability analysis of the temporarily e…
A novel jet-stirred combustion chamber is designed to study turbulent premixed flames. In the new approach, multiple impinging turbulent jets are used to stir the mixture. It is well known that pair of counterflowing turbulent jets produces nearly a constant intensity along the jet axes. In this study, different numbers of impinging jets in various configurations are used to produce isotropic turbulence intensity. FLUENT simulations have been conducted to assess the viability of the proposed chamber. In order to be able to compare different configurations, three different non dimensional indic…
The vortex dynamics resulting from the interaction of synthetic jets with turbulent boundary layers was investigated experimentally using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV). Three aspect ratio 18 rectangular orifice geometries were tested including spanwise and streamwise-oriented orifices issuing normal to the wall and a spanwise-oriented orifice pitched $45^\circ$ downstream. Additionally, three actuation conditions were tested to explore the impact of varying blowing ratio and Strouhal number. SPIV data obtained on an array of measurement planes was used to reconstruct the three…
Peculiarities of the turbulent two phase and multiphase flows of the mutually immiscible liquids and averaged differential equations for their modeling are considered based on the approach, which was first developed and proposed by Prof. A.I. Nakorchevski as an alternative to a number of the well known averaged multiphase dynamics equations. The main difference of the new method was in an averaging of the Navier Stokes equations by phases and components in time instead of the widely spread spatial averaging in multiphase mechanics. What was more, introduction of the so called function indicato…
In this paper, computations of transient, incompressible, turbulent, plane jets using the discrete lattice BGK Boltzmann equation are reported. A priori derivation of the discrete lattice BGK Boltzmann equation with a spatially and temporally dependent relaxation time parameter, which is used to represent the averaged flow field, from its corresponding continuous form is given. The averaged behavior of the turbulence field is represented by the standard {\it k-$ε$} turbulence model and computed using a finite-volume scheme on non-uniform grids. Computed results are compared with analytical sol…
Studies in the literature on plane turbulent wall jets on flat surfaces, have invariably considered either the nozzle initial conditions or the asymptotic conditions far downstream, as scaling parameters for the streamwise variations of length and velocity scales. These choices, however, do not square with the notion of self similarity which is essentially a "local" concept. We first demonstrate that the streamwise variations of velocity and length scales in wall jets show remarkable scaling with local parameters i.e. there appear to be no imposed length and velocity scales. Next, it is shown …
Linear stability analysis has proven to be a useful tool in the analysis of dominant coherent structures, such as the von Kármán vortex street and the global spiral mode associated with the vortex breakdown of swirling jets. In recent years, linear stability analysis has been applied successfully to turbulent time-mean flows, instead of laminar base-flows, \textcolor{black}{which requires turbulent models that account for the interaction of the turbulent field with the coherent structures. To retain the stability equations of laminar flows, the Boussinesq approximation with a spatially nonunif…
The present paper is devoted to the mixing and heat transfer features of mutually immiscible liquids in the two-fluid turbulent heterogeneous jet flow. Many natural and technical processes deal with the turbulent jets of mutually immiscible liquids, which represent an important class of the modern multiphase system dynamics. Differential equations for the axially symmetrical two-dimensional stationary flow and the integral correlations in a cylindrical coordinate system were considered for the jet from a nozzle into a space filled with another fluid that is not miscible with the first one. Par…
We study a turbulent jet issuing from a cylindrical nozzle to characterise coherent structures evolving in the turbulent boundary layer. The analysis is performed using data from a large-eddy simulation of a Mach 0.4 jet. Azimuthal decomposition of the velocity field in the nozzle shows that turbulent kinetic energy predominantly resides in high azimuthal wavenumbers; the first three azimuthal wavenumbers, that are important for sound generation, contain much lower, but non-zero amplitudes. Using two-point statistics, low azimuthal modes in the nozzle boundary layer are shown to exhibit signif…
Combustion in automotive and aerospace applications employing diesel, gas turbine and liquid rocket engines is preceded by injection and mixing of fuel and oxidizer at high pressures, often exceeding mixture critical values. Experimental observations indicate that the jets injected at supercritical pressures exhibit significantly different dynamics than the jets at subcritical conditions, owing to the lack of distinct liquid and gas phases in supercritical state. As a result, the averaged flow quantities such as the potential core length, jet spatial growth rate and velocity decay profiles dif…
A cylindrical and inclined jet in crossflow is studied under two distinct velocity ratios, $r=1$ and $r=2$, using highly resolved large eddy simulations (LES). First, an investigation of turbulent scalar mixing sheds light onto the previously observed but unexplained phenomenon of negative turbulent diffusivity. We identify two distinct types of counter gradient transport, prevalent in different regions: the first, throughout the windward shear layer, is caused by cross-gradient transport; the second, close to the wall right after injection, is caused by non-local effects. Then, we propose a d…
This article shows the importance of flow compressibility on the heat transfer in confined impinging jets, and how it is driven by both the Mach number and the wall heat-flux. Hence, we present a collection of cases at several Mach numbers with different heat-flux values applied at the impingement wall. The wall temperature scales linearly with the imposed heat-flux and the adiabatic wall temperature is found to be purely governed by the flow compression. Especially for high heat-flux values, the non-constant wall temperature induces considerable differences in the thermal conductivity of the …
We investigate ambient fluid entrainment and near-field flow characteristics of a free surface plunging jet for five Reynolds numbers ranging from 3000 to 10000 using time-resolved stereo particle image velocimetry (SPIV). We present time-averaged velocities, RMS velocity fluctuations, mean entrainment and unsteady flow features and compare them with previous studies on free jets. We find that plunging jets have a smaller potential core length, and earlier decay of the mean centerline velocity. The peak RMS velocity fluctuations occur at a location significantly upstream compared to the free j…
We study the bifurcations of the large scale jets in the turbulent regime of a forced shear flow using direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations. The bifurcations are seen in the probability density function (PDF) of the largest scale mode with the control parameter being the Reynolds number based on the friction coefficient denoted as $Rh$. As one increases $Rh$ in the turbulent regime, the PDF of the large scale mode first bifurcates from a Gaussian to a bimodal behaviour, signifying the emergence of reversals of the large scale flow where the flow fluctuates between two di…
The mixing process of multiple jets of liquefied petroleum gas and air in a diffusion flame is numerically analysed. The case study considers a four-port array burner where the fuel is injected by four peripheral nozzles and mixed with the surrounding air. Simulations are conducted with the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes technique, and the turbulence effect is modelled with the realizable k-e model. In addition, the eddy dissipation model is implemented to calculate the effect of the turbulent chemical reaction rate. Results show that the essential mixture mechanism occurs within a flame cone…
We propose a family of two-phase-fluid models for a full-cone turbulent round jet that describe its dynamics in a simple but comprehensive manner with the apex angle of the cone being the main disposable parameter. The basic assumptions are that (i) the jet is statistically stationary and that (ii) it can be approximated by a mixture of two fluids with their phases in dynamic equilibrium (so-called Locally Homogeneous Flow). To derive the model, we impose either full or partial conservation of the initial mass and total power fluxes, introducing mass and power loss factors as disposable parame…

A jet of heavy fluid is injected upwards, at time $t=0$, into a lighter fluid and reaches a maximum height at time $t=t_i$ and then flows back around the upward flow. A similar flow situation occurs for a light fluid injected downward into a heavy one. In this paper an exact analytical expression for $t_i$ is derived. The expression remains valid for laminar and turbulent buoyant jets with or without swirl.
We report an experimental investigation of various statistical properties of the spatial Fourier modes of the vorticity field in turbulent jets for a large range of Reynolds numbers ($530 \leq R_λ \leq 6100$). The continuous time evolution of a spatial Fourier mode of the vorticity distribution, characterized by a well defined wave-vector, is obtained from acoustic scattering measurements. The spatial enstrophy spectrum, as a function of the spatial wave-vector, is determined by scanning the incoming sound frequencies. Time-frequency analysis of the turbulent vorticity fluctuations is also per…
The breakup of an interface into a cascade of droplets and their subsequent coalescence is a generic problem of central importance to a large number of industrial settings such as mixing, separations, and combustion. We study the breakup of a liquid jet introduced through a cylindrical nozzle into a stagnant viscous phase via a hybrid interface-tracking/level-set method to account for the surface tension forces in a three-dimensional Cartesian domain. Numerical solutions are obtained for a range of Reynolds (Re) and Weber (We) numbers. We find that the interplay between the azimuthal and strea…
A longstanding mystery about Jupiter has been the straightness and steadiness of its weather-layer jets, quite unlike terrestrial strong jets with their characteristic unsteadiness and long-wavelength meandering. The problem is addressed in two steps. The first is to take seriously the classic Dowling-Ingersoll (DI) 1-1/2-layer scenario and its supporting observational evidence, pointing toward deep, massive, zonally-symmetric zonal jets in the underlying dry-convective layer. The second is to improve the realism of the model stochastic forcing used to represent the effects of Jupiter's moist …
The concept of local isotropy in a chemically reacting turbulent wall-jet flow is addressed using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. Different DNS databases with isothermal and exothermic reactions are examined. The chemical reaction and heat release effects on the turbulent velocity, passive scalar and reactive species fields are studied using their probability density functions (PDF) and higher order moments for velocities and scalar fields, as well as their gradients. With the aid of the anisotropy invariant maps for the Reynolds stress tensor the heat release effects on the anisotropy…
