It is an important question in string compactification whether complex structure moduli stabilization inevitably ends up with a vacuum expectation value of the superpotential < W > of the order of the Planck scale cubed. Any thoughts on volume stabilization and inflation in string theory, as well as on phenomenology of supersymmetric Standard Models, will be affected by the answer to this question. In this work, we follow an idea for making < W > $\simeq$ 0 where the internal manifold has a vacuum complex structure with arithmetic characterization, and address Calabi--Yau fourfold compactification of F-theory. The moduli space of K3 x K3 orbifolds contain infinitely many such vacua. Arithmetic conditions for a < W > =0 flux are worked out, and then all the K3 moduli have supersymmetric mass. Possible gauge groups, matter representations and discrete symmetries are studied for the case of Z_2-orbifolds.
We study a four-dimensional effective theory of the five-dimensional (5D) gauged supergravity with a universal hypermultiplet and perturbative superpotential terms at the orbifold fixed points. The class of models we consider includes the 5D heterotic M-theory and the supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model as special limits of the gauging parameters. We analyse the vacuum structure of the models, especially the nature of the moduli stabilization, from the viewpoint of the effective theory.
We discuss flux quantization and moduli stabilization in toroidal type IIB Z_N - or Z_N x Z_M -orientifolds, focusing mainly on their orbifold limits. After presenting a detailed discussion of their moduli spaces and effective actions, we study the supersymmetric vacuum structure of these models and derive criteria for the existence of stable minima. Furthermore, we briefly investigate the models away from their orbifold points and comment on the microscopic origin of their non-perturbative superpotentials.
We study a supersymmetric field theory in six dimensions compactified on the orbifold T^2/Z_2 with two Wilson lines. After supersymmetry breaking, the Casimir energy fixes the shape moduli at fixed points in field space where the symmetry of the torus lattice is enhanced. Localized Fayet-Iliopoulos terms stabilize the volume modulus at a size much smaller than the inverse supersymmetry breaking scale. All moduli masses are smaller than the gravitino mass.
We study moduli stabilization in combination with inflation in heterotic orbifold compactifications in the light of a large Hubble scale and the favored tensor-to-scalar ratio $r \approx 0.05$. To account for a trans-Planckian field range we implement aligned natural inflation. Although there is only one universal axion in heterotic constructions, further axions from the geometric moduli can be used for alignment and inflation. We argue that such an alignment is rather generic on orbifolds, since all non-perturbative terms are determined by modular weights of the involved fields and the Dedeki…
We compute the one-loop Casimir energy of gravity and matter fields, obeying various boundary conditions, in 5-dimensional S^1/Z_2 and 6-dimensional T^2/Z_k orbifolds. We discuss the role of the Casimir energy in possible radius stabilization mechanisms and show that the presence of massive as well as massless fields can lead to minima with zero cosmological constant. In the 5-d orbifold, we also consider the case where kinetic terms localized at the fixed points are not small. We take into account their contribution to the Casimir energy and show that localized kinetic terms can also provide …
We study Kähler moduli stabilizations in semi-realistic magnetized D-brane models based on $ Z_2\times Z_2'$ toroidal orbifolds. In type IIB compactifications, 3-form fluxes can stabilize the dilaton and complex structure moduli fields, but there remain some massless closed string moduli fields, Kähler moduli. The magnetic fluxes generate Fayet-Iliopoulos terms, which can fix ratios of Kähler moduli. On top of that, we consider D-brane instanton effects to stabilize them in concrete D-brane models and investigate the brane configurations to confirm that the moduli fields can be stabilized succ…
We find a static solution to Einstein's field equations on a five-dimensional orbifold with a compact S_1/Z_2 fifth direction and Poincare invariant 3+1 sections. The solution describes a theory with bulk cosmological constant and 3-branes at the orbifold fixed points which carry matter density and pressure in addition to tension. The radius of the fifth dimension is determined by the matter content of the branes. The ratio of the space and time components of the metric depends on the fifth coordinate. Thus, the speed of propagation of massless fields is path dependent. For example, bulk and b…
In this paper we discuss the issues of supersymmetry breaking and moduli stabilization within the context of E_8 x E_8 heterotic orbifold constructions and, in particular, we focus on the class of "mini-landscape" models. In the supersymmetric limit, these models admit an effective low energy field theory with a spectrum of states and dimensionless gauge and Yukawa couplings very much like that of the MSSM. These theories contain a non-Abelian hidden gauge sector which generates a non-perturbative superpotential leading to supersymmetry breaking and moduli stabilization. We demonstrate this ef…
Scherk-Schwarz compactification in string theory can be defined as orbifolding by an R symmetry, a symmetry that acts differently on bosons and fermions. Such a symmetry can arise in many situations, including toroidal and orbifold compactifications, as well as smooth Calabi-Yau spaces. If the symmetry acts freely then for large radius there are no tachyons in the spectrum. We focus mainly on stabilization by fluxes, and give examples with all moduli stabilized where the coupling is small and the internal manifold is large. Such models appear to be perturbatively stable with supersymmetry brok…
We discuss general properties of moduli stablization in KKLT scenarios in type IIB orientifold compactifications. In particular, we find conditions for the Kaehler potential to allow a KKLT scenario for a manifold X_6 without complex structure moduli, i.e. h_(2,1)(X_6)=0. This way, a whole class of type IIB orientifolds with h_(2,1)(X_6)=0 is ruled out. This excludes in particular all Z_N- and Z_N x Z_M-orientifolds X_6 with h_(2,1)(X_6)=0 for a KKLT scenario. This concerns Z_3, Z_7, Z_3 x Z_3, Z_4 x Z_4, Z_6 x Z_6 and Z_2 x Z_6' -both at the orbifold point and away from it. Furthermore, we pr…
Aiming at improving our knowledge of the low-energy limit of heterotic orbifold compactifications, we determine at lowest order the Kahler potential of matter fields in the case where more than three bulk Kahler moduli appear. Interestingly, bulk matter fields couple to more than one Kahler modulus, a subtle difference with models with only three Kahler moduli that may provide a tool to address the question of moduli stabilization in these models.
We study Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms of six-dimensional supersymmetric Abelian gauge theory compactified on a $T^2/Z_2$ orbifold. Such orbifold compactifications can lead to localized FI-terms and instability of bulk zero modes. We study 1-loop correction to FI-terms in more general geometry than the previous works. We find induced FI-terms depend on the complex structure of the compact space. We also find the complex structure of the torus can be stabilized at a specific value corresponding to a self-consistent supersymmetric minimum of the potential by such 1-loop corrections, which is appli…
This thesis is concerned with the geometry of toroidal orbifolds and their applications in string theory. By resolving the orbifold singularities via blow-ups, one arrives at a smooth Calabi-Yau manifold. The systematic method to do so is explained in detail. Also the transition to the Orientifold quotient is explained. In the second part of this thesis, applications in string phenomenology are discussed. The applications belong to the framework of compactifications with fluxes in type IIB string theory. The first example belongs to the category of model building, flux-induced soft supersymmet…
One of the challenges in connecting higher dimensional theories to cosmology is stabilization of the moduli fields. We investigate the role of a Lorentz violating vector field in the context of stabilization. Specifically, we compute the one loop Casimir energy in Randall-Sundrum 5-dimensional (non-supersymmetric) S^1/ Z_2 orbifolds resulting from the interaction of a real scalar field with periodic boundary conditions with a Lorentz violating vector field. We find that the result is an enhanced attractive Casimir force. Hence, for stability, positive contributions to the Casimir force from br…
We analyze a class of dual pairs of heterotic and type I models based on freely-acting $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifolds in four dimensions. Using the adiabatic argument, it is possible to calculate non-perturbative contributions to the gauge coupling threshold corrections on the type I side by exploiting perturbative calculations on the heterotic side, without the drawbacks due to twisted moduli. The instanton effects can then be combined with closed-string fluxes to stabilize most of the moduli fields of the internal manifold, and also the dilaton, in a racetrack realization of th…
We consider Type IIB orientifold models on Calabi-Yau spaces with three-form G-flux turned on. These fluxes freeze some of the complex structure moduli and the complex dilaton via an F-term scalar potential. By introducing pairs of D9-anti-D9 branes with abelian magnetic fluxes it is possible to freeze also some of the Kaehler moduli via a D-term potential. Moreover, such magnetic fluxes in general lead to chiral fermions, which make them interesting for string model-building. These issues are demonstrated in a simple toy model based on a Z_2 x Z_2' orbifold.
We analyze D = 4 compactifications of Type IIB theory with generic, geometric and non-geometric, dual fluxes turned on. In particular, we study N = 1 toroidal orbifold compactifications that admit an embedding of the untwisted sector into gauged N = 4, 8 supergravities. Truncations, spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry and the inclusion of sources are discussed. The algebraic identities satisfied by the supergravity gaugings are used to implement the full set of consistency constraints on the background fluxes. This allows to perform a generic study of N = 1 vacua and identify large regions o…
Non-perturbative effects are studied for Type I strings on the Z_3 orbifold with Chan-Paton symmetry broken by Wilson lines. Generalizing previous analyses that have focussed on (bi)fundamentals, it is argued that (anti)symmetric representations of the resulting gauge group play a decisive role in generating an ADS-like superpotential in this and related cases. Non perturbative corrections in the closed string moduli are only allowed if properly dressed with open string fields charged under the anomalous U(1) of the orbifold. A general discussion of instanton effects in SYM and string theories…
We present a systematic way for deriving a four-dimensional (4D) effective action of the five-dimensional (5D) orbifold supergravity respecting the N=1 {\it off-shell} structure. As an illustrating example, we derive a 4D effective theory of the 5D gauged supergravity with a universal hypermultiplet and {\it generic} gaugings, which includes the 5D heterotic M-theory and the supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model as special limits of the gauging parameters. We show the vacuum structure of such model, especially the nature of moduli stabilization, introducing perturbative superpotential terms at …
We discuss the effect of the dynamics of D-branes on moduli stabilization in type IIB string theory compactifications, with reference to a concrete toy model of T6/Z3 orientifold compactification with fractional D3-branes and anti-D3-branes at orbifold fixed points. The resulting attractive forces between anti-D3-branes and D3-branes, together with the repulsive forces between anti-D3-branes and O3-planes, can affect the stability of the compact space. There are no complex structure moduli in T6/Z3 orientifold, which should thus capture some generic features of more general settings where all …
We study dilaton stabilization in heterotic string models. By utilizing the asymmetric orbifold construction, we construct an explicit three-generation model whose matter content in the visible sector is the supersymmetric standard model with additional vectorlike matter. This model does not contain any geometric moduli fields except the dilaton field. Model building at a symmetry enhancement point in moduli space enlarges the rank of the hidden gauge group. By analyzing multiple hidden gauge sectors, the dilaton field is stabilized by the racetrack mechanism. We also discuss a supersymmetry b…
We analyze solutions of string theory and supergravity which involve real hyperbolic spaces. Examples of string compactifications are given in terms of hyperbolic coset spaces of finite volume $Γ\backslash {\mathbb H}^N$, where $Γ$ is a discrete group of isometries of ${\mathbb H}^N$. We describe finite flux and the tensor kernel associated with hyperbolic spaces. The case of arithmetic geometry of $Γ= SL(2, {\mathbb Z}+i{\mathbb Z})/\{\pm Id\}$, where $Id$ is the identity matrix, is analyzed. We discuss supersymmetry surviving for supergravity solutions involving real hyperbolic space factors…
We study a four-dimensional effective theory of the five-dimensional (5D) gauged supergravity with a universal hypermultiplet and perturbative superpotential terms at the orbifold fixed points. Among eight independent isometries of the scalar manifold, we focus on three directions for gauging by the graviphoton. The class of models we consider includes the 5D heterotic M-theory and the supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model as special limits of the gauging parameters. We analyze the vacuum structure of such models, especially the nature of moduli stabilization, from the viewpoint of the effectiv…
We provide a description of the five-dimensional Higgs mechanism in supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on the orbifold S^1/Z_2 by means of the N=1 superfield formalism. Goldstone bosons absorbed by vector multiplets can come either from hypermultiplets or from gauge multiplets of opposite parity (Hosotani mechanism). Supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. In the presence of massive hypermultiplets and gauge multiplets, with different supersymmetric masses, the radion can be stabilized with positive (de Sitter) vacuum energy. The masses of vector and hypermultiplets ca…
We describe the construction of string theory models with semirealistic spectrum in a sector of (anti) D3-branes located at an orbifold singularity at the bottom of a highly warped throat geometry, which is a generalisation of the Klebanov-Strassler deformed conifold. These models realise the Randall-Sundrum proposal to naturally generate the Planck/electroweak hierarchy in a concrete string theory embedding, and yielding interesting chiral open string spectra. We describe examples with Standard Model gauge group (or left-right symmetric extensions) and three families of SM fermions, with corr…
We examine the possibility of the extra dimensional radius stabilization with only the gravity multiplet in the bulk and some couplings at orbifold fixed points in a supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model. Unfortunately, we find that the radius cannot be stabilized in all the cases we consider. Depending on parameters in the model, the fifth dimension collapses or its radius goes to infinity. While the former case is theoretically disastrous, the latter implies that the so-called ``RS II'' model is automatically realized in our setup. Although the radius is not stabilized, there is nothing wrong…
We elucidate the structure of D terms in N=1 orientifold compactifications with fluxes. As a case study, we consider a simple orbifold of the type-IIA theory with D6-branes at angles, O6-planes and general NSNS, RR and Scherk-Schwarz geometrical fluxes. We examine in detail the emergence of D terms, in their standard supergravity form, from an appropriate limit of the D-brane action. We derive the consistency conditions on gauged symmetries and general fluxes coming from brane-localized Bianchi identities, and their relation with the Freed-Witten anomaly. We extend our results to other N=1 com…
We consider a class of warped higher dimensional brane models with topology $M \times Σ\times S^1/Z_2$, where $Σ$ is a $D_2$ dimensional manifold. Two branes of codimension one are embedded in such a bulk space-time and sit at the orbifold fixed points. We concentrate on the case where an exponential warp factor (depending on the distance along the orbifold) accompanies the Minkowski $M$ and the internal space $Σ$ line elements. We evaluate the moduli effective potential induced by bulk scalar fields in these models, and we show that generically this can stabilize the size of the extra dimensi…
We consider the stabilization of string moduli and resulting soft supersymmetry-breaking terms in heterotic string orbifolds. Among the results obtained are: formulae for the scalar interaction soft terms without integrating out the hidden sector gaugino condensate, which reduce to standard expressions in the usual "truncated" limit; an expression for the modular transformation of A-terms; a study of the minima of the scalar potential in the Kaehler modulus direction; and a discussion of the implications for CP violation phenomenology. Some closely related results have appeared in a recent pap…
We discuss type IIB orientifolds with D-branes, and NSNS and RR field strength fluxes, with D-brane sectors leading to open string spectra with non-abelian gauge symmetry and charged chiral fermions. The closed string field strengths generate a scalar potential stabilizing most moduli. Hence the models combine the advantages of leading to phenomenologically interesting (and even semirealistic) chiral open string spectra, and of stabilizing the dilaton and most geometric moduli. We describe the explicit construction of two classes of non-supersymmetric models on $\IT^6$ and orbifolds/orientifol…
We analyze the process of string vacuum destabilization due to instanton induced superpotential couplings which depend linearly on charged fields. These non-perturbative instabilities result in potentials for the D-brane moduli and lead to processes of D-brane recombination, motion and partial moduli stabilization at the non-perturbative vacuum. By using techniques of D-brane instanton calculus, we explicitly compute this scalar potential in toroidal orbifold compactifications with magnetized D-branes by summing over the possible discrete instanton configurations. We illustrate explicitly the …
All the models of elementary particles and their interactions derived from String Theory involve a compact six-dimensional internal space. Its volume and shape should be fixed or stabilized, since otherwise massless scalar fields (moduli) reflecting their deformations appear in our four-dimensional space-time, with sizable effects on known particles and fields. We propose a strategy towards stabilizing the compact space without fluxes of three-form fields from closed strings. Our main motivation and goal is to proceed insofar as possible within conventional string world-sheet theory. As we sha…
We propose a new way of obtaining slow-roll inflation in the context of higher dimensional models motivated by string and M theory. In our model, all extra spatial dimensions are orbifolded. The initial conditions are taken to be a hot dense bulk brane gas which drives an initial phase of isotropic bulk expansion. This phase ends when a weak potential between the orbifold fixed planes begins to dominate. For a wide class of potentials, a period during which the bulk dimensions decrease sufficiently slowly to lead to slow-roll inflation of the three dimensions parallel to the orbifold fixed pla…
We compute the two-loop contributions to the free energy in the null compactification of perturbative string theory at finite temperature. The cases of bosonic, Type II and heterotic strings are all treated. The calculation exploits an explicit reductive parametrization of the moduli space of infinite-momentum frame string worldsheets in terms of branched cover instantons. Various arithmetic and physical properties of the instanton sums are described. Applications to symmetric product orbifold conformal field theories and to the matrix string theory conjecture are also briefly discussed.
Heterotic orbifold compactifications yield a myriad of models that reproduce many properties of the supersymmetric extension of the standard model and provide potential solutions to persisting problems of high energy physics, such as the origin of the neutrino masses and the strong CP problem. However, the details of the phenomenology in these scenarios rely on the assumption of a stable vacuum, characterized by moduli fields. In this note, we drop this assumption and address the problem of moduli stabilization in realistic orbifold models. We study their qualities and their 4D effective actio…
We describe methods for building "semi-realistic" models of F-term inflation. By semi-realistic we mean that they are built in, and obey the requirements of, "semi-realistic" particle physics models. The particle physics models are taken to be effective supergravity theories derived from orbifold compactifications of string theory, and their requirements are taken to be modular invariance, absence of mass terms and stabilization of moduli. We review the particle physics models, their requirements and tools and methods for building inflation models.
We review the theory and phenomenology of effective supergravity theories based on orbifold compactifications of the weakly-coupled heterotic string. In particular, we consider theories in which the four-dimensional theory displays target space modular invariance and where the dilatonic mode undergoes Kahler stabilization. A self-contained exposition of effective Lagrangian approaches to gaugino condensation and heterotic string theory is presented, leading to the development of the models of Binetruy, Gaillard and Wu. Various aspects of the phenomenology of this class of models are considered…
We consider six-dimensional supergravity with Abelian bulk flux compactified on an orbifold. The effective low-energy action can be expressed in terms of N=1 chiral moduli superfields with a gauged shift symmetry. The D-term potential contains two Fayet-Iliopoulos terms which are induced by the flux and by the Green-Schwarz term canceling the gauge anomalies, respectively. The Green-Schwarz term also leads to a correction of the gauge kinetic function which turns out to be crucial for the existence of Minkowski and de Sitter vacua. Moduli stabilization is achieved by the interplay of the D-ter…
There are two known sources of nonperturbative superpotentials for Kähler moduli in type IIB orientifolds, or F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds, with flux: Euclidean brane instantons and low-energy dynamics in D7 brane gauge theories. The first class of effects, Euclidean D3 branes which lift in M-theory to M5 branes wrapping divisors of arithmetic genus 1 in the fourfold, is relatively well understood. The second class has been less explored. In this paper, we consider the explicit example of F-theory on $K3 \times K3$ with flux. The fluxes lift the D7 brane matter fields, an…
We discuss a high-scale SUSY breaking scenario with the wino dark matter in the five-dimensional supergravity model on $S^1/Z_2$. The extra U(1) symmetries broken by the orbifold projection control the flavor structure of soft SUSY-breaking parameters as well as the Yukawa couplings, and a scalar component of the one of moduli multiplets, which arise from extra-dimensional components of the U(1) vector multiplets, induces the slow-roll inflation. Because of the supersymmetric moduli stabilization as well as the moduli inflation, it is found that the correct dark matter relic abundance is non-t…
We propose a mechanism for the natural inflation with and without modulation in the framework of type IIB string theory on toroidal orientifold or orbifold. We explicitly construct the stabilization potential of complex structure, dilaton and Kähler moduli, where one of the imaginary component of complex structure moduli becomes light which is identified as the inflaton. The inflaton potential is generated by the gaugino-condensation term which receives the one-loop threshold corrections determined by the field value of complex structure moduli and the axion decay constant of inflaton is enhan…
