Mock modular forms have their origins in Ramanujan's pioneering work on mock theta functions. In a 1975 paper, Zagier proved certain transformation properties of the generating function of the Hurwitz class numbers $H(n)$ for the discriminant $(-n)$. In the modern framework, these results show that the generating function of $H(n)$ is a mock modular form of weight 3/2 with the theta function being the shadow. In this expository paper, we provide a detailed proof of Zagier's result.
Zagier introduced special bases for weakly holomorphic modular forms to give the new proof of Borcherds' theorem on the infinite product expansions of integer weight modular forms on $\SL_2(\ZZ)$ with a Heegner divisor. These good bases appear in pairs, and they satisfy a striking duality, which is now called the Zagier duality. After the result of Zagier, this type duality was studied broadly in various view points including the theory of a mock modular form. In this paper, we consider this problem with the Eichler cohomology theory, especially the supplementary function theory developed by K…
We prove Zagier duality between the Fourier coefficients of canonical bases for spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of prime level $p$ with $11 \leq p \leq 37$ with poles only at the cusp at $\infty$, and special cases of duality for an infinite class of prime levels. We derive generating functions for the bases for genus 1 levels.
This note points out that for any odd prime $p$, Zagier's weight $3/2$ mock Eisenstein series can be completed to a $p$-adic modular form in a way that bears some resemblance to its completion to a harmonic Maass form.
Zagier proved that the generating series for the traces of singular moduli is a \textit{weakly holomorphic} modular form of weight 3/2 on $Γ_0(4)$. Bruinier and Funke extended the results of Zagier to modular curves of arbitrary genus. Zagier also showed that the twisted traces of singular moduli are generated by a weakly holomorphic modular form of weight 3/2. In this paper, we study the extension of Zagier's result for the twisted traces of singular moduli to congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$. As an application, we study congruences for the twisted traces of singular moduli of weakly holomorphic…
In this note, we generalize the isomorphisms to the case when the discriminant form is not necessarily induced from real quadratic fields. In particular, this general setting includes all the subspaces with epsilon-conditions, only two spacial cases of which were treated before. With this established, we shall prove the Zagier duality for canonical bases. Finally, we raise a question on the integrality of the Fourier coefficients of these bases elements, or equivalently we concern the existence of a Miller-like basis for vector valued modular forms.
We give an exact formula of the average of adjoint $L$-functions of holomorphic Hilbert cusp forms with a fixed weight and a square-free level, which is a generalization of Zagier's formula known for the case of elliptic cusp forms on ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. As an application, we prove that the Satake parameters of Hilbert cusp forms with a fixed weight and with growing square-free levels are equidistributed in an ensemble constructed by values of the adjoint $L$-functions.
The primary goal of this paper is to construct the basis of the space of weight 3/2 mock modular forms which is an extension of the Borcherd-Zagier basis of weight 3/2 weakly holomorphic modular forms. The shadows of the members of this basis form the Borcherds- Zagier basis of the space of weight 1/2 weakly holomorphic modular forms. For the purpose, we use a weak Maass-Poincaré Series. The secondary goal is to provide a full computation of the Fourier coefficients for the weak Maass-Poincaré Series in most general form as a weak Maass-Poincaré Series has played a key role in the recent advan…
We compute the p-adic Abel-Jacobi map of the product of a Hilbert modular surface and a modular curve at a null-homologous (modified) embedding of the modular curve in this product, evaluated on differentials associated to a Hilbert cuspidal form f of weight (2,2) and a cuspidal form of weight 2. We generalize this computation to suitable null-homological cycles in the fibre products of the universal families on the surface and the curve, evaluated at differentials associated to f and g of higher weights. We express the values of the p-adic Abel-Jacobi map at these weights in terms of a p-adic…
In this work, we show that the difference of a Hauptmodul for a genus zero group $Γ_{0}(N)$ as a Hilbert modular function on $Y_{0}(N)\times Y_{0}(N)$ is a Borcherds lift of type $(2,2)$. As applications, we derive Monster denominator formula like product expansions for these Hilbert modular functions and certain Gross-Zagier type CM value formulas.
For any number $m \equiv 0,1 \, (4)$ we correct the generating function of Hurwitz class number sums $\sum_r H(4n - mr^2)$ to a modular form (or quasimodular form if $m$ is a square) of weight two for the Weil representation attached to a binary quadratic form of discriminant $m$ and determine its behavior in the Petersson scalar product. This modular form arises through holomorphic projection of the zero-value of a nonholomorphic Jacobi Eisenstein series of index $1/m$. When $m$ is prime, we recover the classical Hirzebruch-Zagier series whose coefficients are intersection numbers of curves o…
We prove that Heegner cycles of codimension m+1 inside Kuga-Sato type varieties of dimension 2m+1 are coefficients of modular forms of weight 3/2+m in the appropriate quotient group. The main technical tool for generating the necessary relations is a Borcherds style theta lift with polynomials. We also show how this lift defines a new singular Shimura-type correspondence from weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight 1/2-m to meromorphic modular forms of weight 2m+2.
Using a family of mock modular forms constructed by Zagier, we study the coefficients of a mock modular form of weight $3/2$ on $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ modulo primes $\ell\geq 5$. These coefficients are related to the smallest parts function of Andrews. As an application, we reprove a theorem of Garvan regarding the properties of this function modulo $\ell$. As another application, we show that congruences modulo $\ell$ for the smallest parts function are rare in a precise sense.
In this paper, we consider the question of correcting mock modular forms in order to obtain $p$-adic modular forms. In certain cases we show that a mock modular form $M^+$ is a $p$-adic modular form. Furthermore, we prove that otherwise the unique correction of $M^+$ is intimately related to the shadow of $M^+$.
In recent work of Bringmann, Guerzhoy, and the first author, p-adic modular forms were constructed from mock modular forms. This paper proves explicit congruences for these p-adic modular forms.
Mixed mock modular forms are functions which lie in the tensor space of mock modular forms and modular forms. As q-hypergeometric series, mixed mock modular forms appear to be much more common than mock theta functions. In this survey, we discuss some of the ways such series arise.
We show the existence of "Zagier duality" between vector valued harmonic weak Maass forms and vector valued weakly holomorphic modular forms of integral weight. This duality phenomenon arises naturally in the context of harmonic weak Maass forms as developed in recent works by Bruinier, Funke, Ono, and Rhoades. Concerning the isomorphism between the spaces of scalar and vector valued harmonic weak Maass forms of integral weight, "Zagier duality" between scalar valued ones is derived.
We survey divisibility properties of the Fourier coefficients of modular functions inspired by Ramanujan. Then using recent results of the generalized Hecke operator on harmonic Maass functions and known divisibility of Fourier coefficients of modular functions, we establish congruence relations of the Fourier coefficients of certain modular functions and mock modular functions of various levles.
We study the meromorphic modular forms defined as sums of -k (k>1) powers of integral quadratic polynomials with negative discriminant. These functions can be viewed as meromorphic analogues of the holomorphic modular forms defined in the same way with positive discriminant, first investigated by Zagier in connection with the Doi-Naganuma map and then by Kohnen and Zagier in connection with the Shimura-Shintani lifts. We compute the Fourier coefficients of these meromorphic modular forms and we show that they split into the sum of a meromorphic modular form with computable algebraic Fourier co…

We express a family of Hecke--Appell-type sums of Hikami and Lovejoy in terms of mixed mock modular forms; in particular, we express the sums in terms of Appell functions and theta functions. Hikami and Lovejoy's family of Hecke--Appell-type sums was obtained by considering certain duals of generalized quantum modular forms.
Borcherds-Zagier bases of the spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weights 1/2 and 3/2 share the Fourier coefficients which are traces of singular moduli. Recently, Duke, Imamoglu, and Tóth have constructed a basis of the space of weight 1/2 mock modular forms, each member in which has Zagier's generating series of traces of singular moduli as its shadow. They also showed that Fourier coefficients of their mock modular forms are sums of cycle integrals of the $j$-function which are real quadratic analogues of singular moduli. In this paper, we prove the Fourier coefficients of a basis…
In this note, we explicitly construct mock modular forms with integral Fourier coefficients by evaluating regularized Petersson inner products involving their shadows, which are unary theta functions of weights 1/2 and 3/2 . In addition, we also improve the known bounds for the denominators of the coefficients of mock modular forms whose shadows are holomorphic weight one cusp forms constructed by Hecke.
In 2013, Lemke Oliver classified all eta-quotients which are theta functions. In this paper, we unify the eta-theta functions by constructing mock modular forms from the eta-theta functions with even characters, such that the shadows of these mock modular forms are given by the eta-theta functions with odd characters. In addition, we prove that our mock modular forms are quantum modular forms. As corollaries, we establish simple finite hypergeometric expressions which may be used to evaluate Eichler integrals of the odd eta-theta functions, as well as some curious algebraic identities.
Since their definition in 2010 by Zagier, quantum modular forms have been connected to numerous different topics such as strongly unimodal sequences, ranks, cranks, and asymptotics for mock theta functions near roots of unity. These are functions that are not necessarily defined on the upper half plane but a priori are defined only on a subset of $\Q$, and whose obstruction to modularity is some analytically "nice" function. Motivated by Zagier's example of the quantum modularity of Kontsevich's "strange" function $F(q)$, we revisit work of Andrews, Jimenez-Urroz, and Ono to construct a natura…
We prove an arithmetic version of a theorem of Hirzebruch and Zagier saying that Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors on a Hilbert modular surface are the coefficients of an elliptic modular form of weight two. Moreover, we determine the arithmetic self-intersection number of the line bundle of modular forms equipped with its Petersson metric on a regular model of a Hilbert modular surface, and study Faltings heights of arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors.
The theorems of Gross-Zagier and Zhang relate the Néron-Tate heights of complex multiplication points on the modular curve X_0(N) (and on Shimura curve analogues) with the central derivatives of automorphic L-functions. We extend these results to include certain CM points on Shimura curves of higher level structure. These results are motivated by applications to Hida theory which are described in the companion article "Central derivatives of L-functions in Hida families."
Utilizing a classification due to Lemke Oliver of eta-quotients which are also theta functions (here called eta-theta functions), Folsom, Garthwaite, Kang, Treneer, and the fourth author constructed a catalog of mock modular forms $V_{mn}$ having weight $3/2$ eta-theta function shadows and showed that these mock modular forms when viewed on certain sets of rationals, transform as quantum modular forms under the action of explicit subgroups. In this paper, we introduce an infinite class of functions that generalizes one row of the catalog, namely the $V_{m1}$, and show that the functions in thi…
We construct a natural basis for the space of weak harmonic Maass forms of weight 5/2 on the full modular group. The non-holomorphic part of the first element of this basis encodes the values of the ordinary partition function p(n). We obtain a formula for the coefficients of the mock modular forms of weight 5/2 in terms of regularized inner products of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight -1/2, and we obtain Hecke-type relations among these mock modular forms.
Using results from Ramanujan's lost notebook, Zudilin recently gave an insightful proof of a radial limit result of Folsom, Ono, and Rhoades for mock theta functions. Here we see that the author's previous work on the dual nature of Appell--Lerch sums and partial theta functions and on constructing bilateral $q$-series with mixed mock modular behaviour is well-suited for such radial limits. We present five more radial limit results which follow from mixed mock modular bilateral $q$-hypergeometric series. We also obtain the mixed mock modular bilateral series for a universal mock theta function…
In this paper, we prove an almost 40 year old conjecture by H. Cohen concerning the generating function of the Hurwitz class number of quadratic forms using the theory of mock modular forms. This conjecture yields an infinite number of so far unproven class number relations.
Bringmann, Guerzhoy and Kane have shown how to correct mock modular forms by a certain linear combination of the Eichler integral of their shadows in order to obtain p-adic modular forms in the sense of Serre. In this paper, we give a new proof of their results (for good primes p) by employing the geometric theory of harmonic Maass forms developed by the first author and the theory of overconvergent modular forms due to Katz and Coleman.
In analogy with the classical theory of Eichler integrals for integral weight modular forms, Lawrence and Zagier considered examples of Eichler integrals of certain half-integral weight modular forms. These served as early prototypes of a new type of object, which Zagier later called a quantum modular form. Since then, a number of others have studied similar examples. Here we develop the theory in a general context, giving rise to a well-defined class of quantum modular forms. Since elements of this class show up frequently in examples of combinatorial and number theoretical interest, we propo…
Using holomorphic projection, we work out a parametrization for all relations of products (resp. Rankin-Cohen brackets) of weight $\tfrac 32$ mock modular forms with holomorphic shadow and weight $\tfrac 12$ modular forms in the spirit of the Kronecker-Hurwitz class number relations. In particular we obtain new proofs for several class number relations among which some are classical, others are relatively new. We also obtain similar results for the mock theta functions.
In this paper, we use Borcherds lifting and the big CM value formula of Bruinier, Kudla, and Yang to give an explicit factorization formula for the norm of $Ψ(\frac{d_1+\sqrt{d_1}}2) -Ψ(\frac{d_2+\sqrt{d_2}}2)$, where $Ψ$ is the $j$-invariant or the Weber invariant $ω_2$. The $j$-invariant case gives another proof of the well-known Gross-Zagier factorization formula of singular moduli, while the Weber invariant case gives a proof of the Yui-Zagier conjecture for $ω_2$. The method used here could be extended to deal with other modular functions on a genus zero modular curve.
The theory of elliptic modular forms has gained significant momentum from the discovery of relaxed yet well-behaved notions of modularity, such as mock modular forms, higher order modular forms, and iterated Eichler-Shimura integrals. Applications beyond number theory range from combinatorics, geometry, and representation theory to string theory and conformal field theory. We unify these relaxed notions in the framework of vector-valued modular forms by introducing a new class of $\mathrm{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$-representations: virtually real-arithmetic types. The key point of the paper is that …
Mock modular forms, which give the theoretical framework for Ramanujan's enigmatic mock theta functions, play many roles in mathematics. We study their role in the context of modular parameterizations of elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$. We show that mock modular forms which arise from Weierstrass $ζ$-functions encode the central $L$-values and $L$-derivatives which occur in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. By defining a theta lift using a kernel recently studied by Hövel, we obtain canonical weight 1/2 harmonic Maass forms whose Fourier coefficients encode the vanishing of these values…
Recently, Zagier expressed an interpolated version of the Apéry numbers for $ζ(3)$ in terms of a critical $L$-value of a modular form of weight 4. We extend this evaluation in two directions. We first prove that interpolations of Zagier's six sporadic sequences are essentially critical $L$-values of modular forms of weight 3. We then establish an infinite family of evaluations between interpolations of leading coefficients of Brown's cellular integrals and critical $L$-values of modular forms of odd weight.
We prove that the coefficients of certain mock theta functions possess no linear congruences modulo 3. We prove similar results for the moduli 2 and 3 for a wide class of weakly holomorphic modular forms and discuss applications. This extends work of Radu on the behavior of the ordinary partition function modulo 2 and 3.
A quadratic twist of the L-function associated with a modular form is known to satisfy a functional equation, which may be even or odd. A result due to Gross and Zagier explicitly computes the central value of the L-function or its derivative. In prime level when the functional equation is even, Michel and Ramakrishnan have used an averaging method to prove several consequences of the Gross-Zagier formulae, including a non-vanishing result. The present research concerns L-functions arising from newforms in prime-squared level, which necessarily have odd functional equations. Such an L-function…
The mock theta conjectures are ten identities involving Ramanujan's fifth-order mock theta functions. The conjectures were proven by Hickerson in 1988 using q-series methods. Using methods from the theory of harmonic Maass forms, specifically work of Zwegers and Bringmann-Ono, Folsom reduced the proof of the mock theta conjectures to a finite computation. Both of these approaches involve proving the identities individually, relying on work of Andrews-Garvan. Here we give a unified proof of the mock theta conjectures by realizing them as an equality between two nonholomorphic vector-valued modu…
In a series of papers we have been studying the geometric theta correspondence for non-compact arithmetic quotients of symmetric spaces associated to orthogonal groups. It is our overall goal to develop a general theory of geometric theta liftings in the context of the real differential geometry/topology of non-compact locally symmetric spaces of orthogonal and unitary groups which generalizes the theory of Kudla-Millson in the compact case. In this paper we study in detail the geometric theta lift for Hilbert modular surfaces. In particular, we will give a new proof and an extension (to all f…
In this paper, we consider sums of class numbers of the type $\sum_{m\equiv a\pmod{p}} H(4n-m^2)$, where $p$ is an odd prime, $n\in \mathbb{N},$ and $a\in \mathbb{Z}$. By showing that these are coefficients of mixed mock modular forms, we obtain explicit formulas. Using these formulas for $p=5$ and $7$, we then prove a conjecture of Brown et al. in the case that $n=\ell$ is prime.
The purpose of this article is to give a simple and explicit construction of mock modular forms whose shadows are Eisenstein series of arbitrary integral weight, level, and character. As application, we construct forms whose shadows are Hecke's Eisenstein series of weight one associated to imaginary quadratic fields, recovering some results by Kudla, Rapoport and Yang (1999), and Schofer (2009), and forms whose shadows equal $Θ^{2k}(z)$ for $k\in \{1,2,3,4\}$, where $Θ(z)$ denotes Jacobi's theta function.
Let $r\geq 1$ be a positive integer, $A$ a real positive semi-definite symmetric $r\times r$ rational matrix, $B$ a rational vector of length $r$, and $C$ a rational scalar. Nahm's problem is to find all triples $(A,B,C)$ such that the $r$-fold $q$-hypergeometric series $$f_{A,B,C}(q):=\sum_{n=(n_1,\dots,n_r)^\mathrm{T}\in (\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0})^r} \frac{q^{\frac{1}{2}n^\mathrm{T} An+n^\mathrm{T} B+C}}{(q;q)_{n_1}\cdots (q;q)_{n_r}}$$ becomes a modular form, and we call such $(A,B,C)$ a modular triple. When the rank $r=3$, after extensive computer searches, Zagier provided twelve sets of conjec…
Let $f(q)$ denote Ramanujan's mock theta function \[f(q) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} a(n) q^{n} := 1+\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{q^{n^{2}}}{(1+q)^{2}(1+q^{2})^{2}\cdots(1+q^{n})^{2}}.\] It is known that there are many linear congruences for the coefficients of $f(q)$ and other mock theta functions. We prove that if the linear congruence $a(mn+t) \equiv 0 \pmod{\ell}$ holds for some prime $\ell \geq 5$, then $\ell | m$ and $(\frac{24t-1}{\ell}) \neq (\frac{-1}{\ell})$. We prove analogous results for the mock theta function $ω(q)$ and for a large class of weakly holomorphic modular forms which includes …
In an important paper, Zagier proved that certain half-integral weight modular forms are generating functions for traces of polynomials in the $j$-function. It turns out that Zagier's work makes it possible to algorithmically compute Hilbert class polynomials using a canonical family of modular forms of weight $\frac{3}{2}$. We generalize these results and consider Haupmoduln for levels $1, 2, 3, 5, 7,$ and $13$. We show that traces of singular values of polynomials in Haupmoduln are again described by coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms. This realization makes it possible to al…
We investigate the modular properties of a new partition rank, the $M_d$-rank of overpartitions. In fact this is an infinite family of ranks, indexed by the positive integer $d$, that gives both the Dyson rank of overpartitions and the overpartition $M_2$-rank as special cases. The $M_d$-rank of overpartitions is the holomorphic part of a certain harmonic Maass form of weight $\frac{1}{2}$. We give the exact transformation of this harmonic Maass form along with a few identities for the $M_d$-rank.
We deepen the study of the relations previously established by Mayer, Lewis and Zagier, and the authors, among the eigenfunctions of the transfer operators of the Gauss and the Farey maps, the solutions of the Lewis-Zagier three-term functional equation and the Maass forms on the modular surface $PSL(2,\Z)\backslash \HH$. In particular we introduce an "inverse" of the integral transform studied by Lewis and Zagier, and use it to obtain new series expansions for the Maass cusp forms and the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series restricted to the imaginary axis. As corollaries we obtain further info…
