The stellar, gaseous and young stellar disks in the LITTLE THINGS sample of nearby dIrrs are fitted with functions to search for correlations between the parameters. We find that the HI radial profiles are generally flatter in the center and fall faster in the outer regions than the V-band profiles, while young stars are more centrally concentrated, especially if the HI is more centrally flat. This pattern suggests that the HI is turning into molecules in the center and the molecular clouds are forming stars and FUV. A model that assumes the molecular surface density is proportional to the total gas surface density to a power of 1.5 or 2, in analogy with the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation, reproduces the relationship between the ratio of the visible to the HI scale length and the HI Sersic index. The molecular fraction is estimated as a function of radius for each galaxy by converting the FUV to a molecular surface density using conventional calibrations. The average molecular fraction inside 3R_D is 23+/-17%. However, the break in the stellar surface brightness profile has no unified tracer related to star formation.
We have examined gas engaged in noncircular motions in 22 of the nearby LITTLE THINGS dwarf irregular galaxies. The HI data cubes have been deconvolved into kinematic components - bulk rotation and noncircular motions, to produce maps of integrated gas, velocity field, and velocity dispersion in the different components. We found significant regions of gas engaged in noncircular motions in half of the galaxies, involving 1%-20% of the total HI mass of the galaxy. In one galaxy we found a pattern in the velocity field that is characteristic of streaming motions around the stellar bar potential …
We present probability density functions and higher order (skewness and kurtosis) analyses of the galaxy-wide and spatially-resolved HI column density distributions in the LITTLE THINGS sample of dwarf irregular galaxies. This analysis follows that of Burkhart et al. (2010) for the Small Magellanic Cloud. About 60% of our sample have galaxy-wide values of kurtosis that are similar to that found for the Small Magellanic Cloud, with a range up to much higher values, and kurtosis increases with integrated star formation rate. Kurtosis and skewness were calculated for radial annuli and for a grid …
Dwarf Irregular galaxies (dIrrs) are the smallest stellar systems with extended HI discs. The study of the kinematics of such discs is a powerful tool to estimate the total matter distribution at these very small scales. In this work, we study the HI kinematics of 17 galaxies extracted from the `Local Irregulars That Trace Luminosity Extremes, The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey' (LITTLE THINGS). Our approach differs significantly from previous studies in that we directly fit 3D models (two spatial dimensions plus one spectral dimension) using the software $^\text{3D}$BAROLO, fully exploiting the info…
We examine FUV images of the LITTLE THINGS sample of nearby dwarf irregular (dIrr) and Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies to identify distinct young regions in their far outer disks. We use these data, obtained with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer satellite, to determine the furthest radius at which in situ star formation can currently be identified. The FUV knots are found at distances from the center of the galaxies of 1 to 8 disk scale lengths and have ages of <20 Myrs and masses of 20 to 1E5 Msolar. The presence of young clusters and OB associations in the outer disks of dwarf galaxies shows …
We identify 814 discrete HI clouds in 40 dwarf irregular galaxies from the LITTLE THINGS survey using an automated cloud-finding algorithm. The cloud masses range from ~10^3 to 10^7 Msolar, have a surface density averaged over all of the clouds of ~9.65 Msolar/pc^2, and constitute 2-53% of the total HI mass of the host galaxy. For individual clouds, the mass including He varies with cloud radius as log M_{gas} = (2.11\pm0.04)x log R_{cl}+(0.78\pm0.08) and the internal velocity dispersion varies as log V_{disp} = 0.5xlog R_{cl}-0.57\pm0.21. The HI clouds tend to be in the outer regions of the g…
Turbulence has the potential for creating gas density enhancements that initiate cloud and star formation (SF), and it can be generated locally by SF. To study the connection between turbulence and SF, we looked for relationships between SF traced by FUV images, and gas turbulence traced by kinetic energy density (KED) and velocity dispersion ($v_{disp}$) in the LITTLE THINGS sample of nearby dIrr galaxies. We performed 2D cross-correlations between FUV and KED images, measured cross-correlations in annuli to produce correlation coefficients as a function of radius, and determined the cumulati…
We have explored the role environmental factors play in determining characteristics of young stellar objects in nearby dwarf irregular and Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies. Star clusters are characterized by concentrations, masses, and formation rates, OB associations by mass and mass surface density, O stars by their numbers and near-ultraviolet absolute magnitudes, and HII regions by Halpha surface brightnesses. These characteristics are compared to surrounding galactic pressure, stellar mass density, HI surface density, and star formation rate surface density. We find no trend of cluster charact…
The radial profiles of gas, stars, and far ultraviolet radiation in 20 dwarf Irregular galaxies are converted to stability parameters and scale heights for a test of the importance of two-dimensional (2D) instabilities in promoting star formation. A detailed model of this instability involving gaseous and stellar fluids with self-consistent thicknesses and energy dissipation on a perturbation crossing time give the unstable growth rates. We find that all locations are effectively stable to 2D perturbations, mostly because the disks are thick. We then consider the average volume densities in th…
Aims. Interacting galaxies show unique irregularities in their kinematic structure. By investigating the spatially resolved kinematics and stellar population properties of galaxies that show irregularities, we can paint a detailed picture of the formation and evolutionary processes that took place during its lifetimes. Methods. In this work, we focus on galaxies with a specific kinematic irregularity, a kinematically distinct stellar core (KDC), in particular, counter-rotating galaxies where the core and main body of the galaxy are rotating in opposite directions. We visually identify eleven M…
We present LITTLE THINGS (Local Irregulars That Trace Luminosity Extremes, The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey) that is aimed at determining what drives star formation in dwarf galaxies. This is a multi-wavelength survey of 37 Dwarf Irregular and 4 Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies that is centered around HI-line data obtained with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) Very Large Array (VLA). The HI-line data are characterized by high sensitivity (less than 1.1 mJy/beam per channel), high spectral resolution (less than or equal to 2.6 km/s), and high angular resolution (~6 arcseconds. The LITTLE T…
We provide constraints on the inclination angle of the H\,{\sc i} disk of the dwarf irregular galaxy Holmberg II (Ho II) from stability analysis of the outer gaseous disk. We point out that a mean inclination angle of 27 degrees and thus a flat circular velocity of ~60 km/s, is required to have a level of gravitational stability similar to that found in other galaxies. Adopting this inclination angle, we find that Ho II lies on the right location in the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. Moreover, for this inclination, its rotation curve is consistent with MOND. However, the corresponding analysi…
A model is proposed for the formation of gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies and gas-poor, rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies following the interaction between two giant galaxies as a function of space density. The formation of dwarf galaxies is considered to depend on a random variable, the tidal index theta, an environmental parameter defined by Karachentsev et al. (2004), such that for theta less than zero, the formation of dwarf irregular galaxy is assured whereas for theta greater than zero, the formation of dwarf ellipticals is preferred. It is found that for particular ranges of the inter…
A method to diagnose the gas distribution in the Galactic halo using a shock wave from the Galactic Centre (GC) is presented. Propagation of a shock wave caused by central explosion with released energy $\sim 10^{55}$ erg is calculated for various models of the gaseous halo, and the shock front morphology is compared with the observed North- (NPS) and South-Polar Spurs (SPS). The observed bipolar hyper-shell (BHS) structure of the spurs is reproduced, when a semi-exponential halo model with radially-variable scale height is adopted. A spherical halo model ($β$ model) is shown to be not appropr…
We have determined new relations between $UBV$ colors and mass-to-light ratios ($M/L$) for dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies, as well as for transformed $g^\prime - r^\prime$. These $M/L$ to color relations (MLCRs) are based on stellar mass density profiles determined for 34 LITTLE THINGS dwarfs from spectral energy distribution fitting to multi-wavelength surface photometry in passbands from the FUV to the NIR. These relations can be used to determine stellar masses in dIrr galaxies for situations where other determinations of stellar mass are not possible. Our MLCRs are shallower than comparab…
We present a catalog of holes and shells in the neutral atomic hydrogen (\HI) of 41 gas-rich dwarf galaxies in LITTLE THINGS (Local Irregulars That Trace Luminosity Extremes, The \HI Nearby Galaxy Survey). We analyzed their properties as part of an investigation into the relation between star formation and structures and kinematics in the \HI of small galaxies. We confirmed 306 holes between 38 pc (our resolution limit) and 2.3 kpc, with expansion velocities up to 30 \kms. The global star formation rates measured by \Ha and FUV emission are consistent with those estimated from the energy requi…
In this paper we analyze Very Large Array (VLA) telescope and Green Bank Telescope (GBT) atomic hydrogen (HI) data for the LITTLE THINGS(1) blue compact dwarf galaxy IC 10. The VLA data allow us to study the detailed HI kinematics and morphology of IC 10 at high resolution while the GBT data allow us to search the surrounding area at high sensitivity for tenuous HI. IC 10's HI appears highly disturbed in both the VLA and GBT HI maps with a kinematically distinct northern HI extension, a kinematically distinct southern plume, and several spurs in the VLA data that do not follow the general kine…
In order to understand the formation and evolution of dIm galaxies, one needs to understand their three-dimensional structure. We present measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion in NGC 1569, a nearby post-starburst dIm galaxy. The stellar vertical velocity dispersion, $σ_{\rm z}$, coupled with the maximum rotational velocity derived from \ion{H}{1} observations, $V_{\rm max}$, gives a measure of how kinematically hot the galaxy is, and, therefore, indicates its structure. We conclude that the stars in NGC 1569 are in a thick disk with a $V_{\rm max} / σ_{\rm z}$ = 2.4 $\pm$ 0.7. In add…
Unlike most satellite galaxies in the Local Group that have long lost their gaseous disks, the Magellanic Clouds are gas-rich dwarf galaxies most-likely on their first pericentric passage allowing us to study disk evolution on the smallest scales. The Magellanic Clouds show both disk destruction and (re)-creation. The Large Magellanic Cloud has a very extended stellar disk reaching to at least 15 kpc (10 radial scalelengths) while its gaseous disk is truncated at ~5 kpc mainly due to its interaction with the hot gaseous halo of the Milky Way. The stellar disk of the Small Magellanic Cloud, on …
We analyze high angular and velocity resolution HI-line data of two LITTLE THINGS (1) blue compact dwarfs (BCDs): Haro 29 and Haro 36. Both of these BCDs are disturbed morphologically and kinematically. Haro 29's HI data reveal a kinematic major axis that is offset from the optical major axis, and a disturbed outer HI component, indicating that Haro 29 may have had a past interaction. Position-velocity diagrams of Haro 36 indicate that it has two kinematically separate components at its center and a likely tidal tail in front of the galaxy. We find that Haro 36 most likely had an interaction i…
Holes and clumps in the interstellar gas of dwarf irregular galaxies are gravitational scattering centers that heat field stars and change their radial and vertical distributions. Because the gas structures are extended and each stellar scattering is relatively weak, the stellar orbits remain nearly circular and the net effect accumulates slowly over time. We calculate the radial profile of scattered stars with an idealized model and find that it approaches an equilibrium shape that is exponential, similar to the observed shapes of galaxy discs. Our models treat only scattering and have no bar…
In most blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies, it remains unclear what triggers their bursts of star formation. We study the HI of three relatively isolated BCDs, Mrk 178, VII Zw 403, and NGC 3738, in detail to look for signatures of star formation triggers, such as gas cloud consumption, dwarf-dwarf mergers, and interactions with companions. High angular and velocity resolution atomic hydrogen (H I) data from the Very Large Array (VLA) dwarf galaxy HI survey, Local Irregulars That Trace Luminosity Extremes, The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey (LITTLE THINGS), allows us to study the detailed kinematics an…
Using deep 21-cm HI data from the Green Bank Telescope we have detected an ~18.3 kpc-long gaseous extension associated with the starbursting dwarf galaxy IC 10. The newly-found feature stretches 1.3 deg to the northwest and has a large radial velocity gradient reaching to ~65 km/s lower than the IC 10 systemic velocity. A region of higher column density at the end of the extension that possesses a coherent velocity gradient (~10 km/s across ~26 arcmin) transverse to the extension suggests rotation and may be a satellite galaxy of IC 10. The HI mass of IC 10 is 9.5x10^7 (d/805 kpc)^2 Msun and t…
We examine the HI total intensity maps of the VLA LITTLE-THINGS galaxies and identify an HI bar in the dwarf irregular galaxy DDO 168 which has a dense and compact dark matter halo that dominates at all radii. This is only the third galaxy found to host an HI bar. Using the HI kinematic data, we apply the Tremaine-Weinberg method to estimate the pattern speed of the bar. The HI bar is found to have an average pattern speed of $23.3 \pm 5.9$ km/s/kpc. Interestingly, for the first time, we find that the observed pattern speeds of the bar in the two kinematic halves are different. We identify the…
HI spatial power spectra (PS) were determined for a sample of 24 nearby dwarf irregular galaxies selected from the LITTLE THINGS (Local Irregulars That Trace Luminosity Extremes - The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey) sample. The two-dimensional (2D) power spectral indices asymptotically become a constant for each galaxy when a significant part of the line profile is integrated. For narrow channel maps, the PS become shallower as the channel width decreases, and this shallowing trend continues to our single channel maps. This implies that even the highest velocity resolution of 1.8 km/s is not smaller …
Strongly interacting galaxies undergo a short-lived but dramatic phase of evolution characterized by enhanced star formation, tidal tails, bridges and other morphological peculiarities. The nearest example of a pair of interacting galaxies is the Magellanic Clouds, whose dynamical interaction produced the gaseous features known as the Magellanic Stream trailing the pair's orbit about the Galaxy, the Bridge between the Clouds, and the Leading Arm, a wide and irregular feature leading the orbit. Young, newly formed stars in the Bridge are known to exist, giving witness to the recent interaction …
We study numerically large-scale magnetic field evolution and its enhancement in gaseous disks of spiral galaxies. We consider a set of models with the various spiral pattern parameters and the initial magnetic field strength with taking into account gas self-gravity and cooling/heating. In agreement with previous studies, we find out that galactic magnetic field is mostly aligned with gaseous structures, however small-scale gaseous structures (spurs and clumps) are more chaotic than the magnetic field structure. In spiral arms magnetic field strongly coexists with the gas distribution, in the…
Leo I is considered one of the youngest dwarf spheroidals (dSph) in the Local Group. Its isolation, extended star formation history (SFH), and recent perigalacticon passage (~1 Gyr ago) make Leo~I one of the most interesting nearby stellar systems. Here, we analyse deep photometric Hubble Space Telescope data via colour-magnitude diagram fitting techniques to study its global and radially-resolved SFH. We find global star formation enhancements in Leo I ~13, 5.5, 2.0, and 1.0 Gyr ago, after which it was substantially quenched. Within the context of previous works focused on Leo I, we interpret…

This work presents an extended, neutral Hydrogen emission map around Magellanic-type dwarf irregular galaxy (dIm) NGC 1569. In the Spring of 2010, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) was used to map a 9 degree x 2 degree region in HI line emission that includes NGC 1569 and IC 342 as well as two other dwarf galaxies. The primary objective for these observations was to search for structures potentially connecting NGC 1569 with IC 342 group members in order to trace previous interactions and thus, provide an explanation for the starburst and peculiar kinematics prevalent in NGC 1569. A…
We present a detailed study of the stellar and HI structure of the dwarf irregular galaxies SextansA and SextansB, members of the NGC3109 association. We use newly obtained deep (r~26.5) and wide field g,r photometry to extend the Surface Brightness (SB) profiles of the two galaxies down to mu_V~ 31.0 mag/arcsec^2. We find that both galaxies are significantly more extended than what previously traced with surface photometry, out to ~4 kpc from their centers along their major axis. Older stars are found to have more extended distribution with respect to younger populations. We obtain the first …
We have studied multi-band surface brightness profiles of a representative sample of 34 nearby dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs). Our data include GALEX FUV/NUV, UBV, Hα, and Spitzer 3.6 \mum images. These galaxies constitute the majority of the LITTLE THINGS survey. By modeling the azimuthal averages of the spectral energy distributions with a complete library of star formation (SF) histories, we derived the stellar mass surface density distributions and the SF rate averaged over three different timescales: the recent 0.1 Gyr, 1 Gyr and a Hubble time. We find that, for \sim 80% (27 galaxies) o…
Using Large Binocular Telescope deep imaging data from the Smallest Scale of Hierarchy Survey (SSH) and archival Hubble Space Telescope data, we reveal the presence of two elongated stellar features contiguous to a bar-like stellar structure in the inner regions of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 3741. These structures are dominated by stars younger than a few hundred Myr and collectively are about twice as extended as the old stellar component. These properties are very unusual for dwarf galaxies in the nearby Universe and difficult to explain by hydro-dynamical simulations. From the analysis …
We present measurements of baryonic mass Mb and specific angular momentum (sAM) jb in 14 rotating dwarf Irregular (dIrr) galaxies from the LITTLE THINGS sample. These measurements, based on 21cm kinematic data from the Very Large Array and stellar mass maps from the Spitzer Space Telescope, extend previous AM measurements by more than two orders of magnitude in Mb. The dwarf galaxies show systematically higher jb values than expected from the jb~Mb^{2/3} scaling of spiral galaxies, representative of a scale-free galaxy formation scenario. This offset can be explained by decreasing baryon mass …
The ISM is a turbulent, multi-phase, and multi-scale medium following scaling relations. Analytical models of galactic gaseous disks need to take into account the multi-scale and multi-phase nature of the interstellar medium. They can be described as clumpy star-forming accretion disks in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, with the mid-plane pressure balancing the gravity of the gaseous and stellar disk. ISM turbulence is taken into account by applying Galactic scaling relations to the cold atomic and molecular gas phases. Turbulence is maintained through energy injection by supernovae. With th…
We present optical photometry of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS/WFC data of the resolved stellar populations in the outer disc of the dwarf irregular galaxy DDO 154. The photometry reveals that young main sequence stars are almost absent from the outermost HI disc. Instead, most are clustered near the main stellar component of the galaxy. We constrain the stellar initial mass function (IMF) by comparing the luminosity function of the main sequence stars to simulated stellar populations assuming a constant star formation rate over the dynamical timescale. The best-fitting IMF is deficient in …
One of the currently favored scenarios for the formation of globular clusters (GCs) with multiple stellar populations is that an initial massive stellar system forms (`first generation', FG), subsequently giving rise to gaseous ejecta which is converted into a second generation (SG) of stars to form a GC. We investigate, for the first time, the sequential formation processes of both FG and SG stars from star-forming massive gas clumps in gas-rich dwarf disk galaxies. We adopt a novel approach to resolve the two-stage formation of GCs in hydrodynamical simulations of dwarf galaxies. In the new s…
We present a scenario for the formation and the morphology of the arrow-shaped dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1427A in the Fornax Cluster. This galaxy shows intriguing stellar and gaseous tails pointing in different directions for which alternative but not conclusive formation scenarios have been proposed in the literature. We performed N-body/SPH simulations of dwarf galaxies falling into a model of the Fornax cluster, exhibiting a jellyfish-like appearance while undergoing ram-pressure stripping. We noted that some of our models show interesting tail morphologies similar to that of NGC 1427A. In…
We present spectroscopic data for 180 red giant branch stars in the isolated dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. Observations of the Calcium II triplet lines in spectra of RGB stars covering the entire galaxy were obtained with FORS2 at the VLT and DEIMOS on Keck II allowing us to derive velocities, metallicities, and ages for the stars. With accompanying photometric and radio data we have measured the structural parameters of the stellar and gaseous populations over the full galaxy. The stellar populations show an intrinsically thick configuration with $0.39 \leq q_{0} \leq 0.57$. The stellar rotatio…
We use accurate estimates of aluminium abundance provided as part of the APOGEE Data Release 17 and Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometry to select a highly pure sample of stars with metallicity $-1.5\lesssim {\rm [Fe/H]}\lesssim 0.5$ born in-situ in the Milky Way proper. We show that the low-metallicity ([Fe/H]$\lesssim -1.3$) in-situ component that we dub Aurora is kinematically hot with an approximately isotropic velocity ellipsoid and a modest net rotation. Aurora stars exhibit large scatter in metallicity and in a number of element abundance ratios. The median tangential velocity of the in…
Within the cosmological concordance model, Cold Dark Matter (CDM) subhalos form the building blocks which merge hierarchically to more massive galaxies. Since intergalactic gas is accreted by massive galaxies, observable e.g. as high- velocity clouds (HVCs) around the Milky Way, with extremely low metallicities, these can be suggested to represent the baryonic content of primordial Dark Matter (DM) subhalos. Another possibility of their origin is that they stem from disrupted satellite galaxies, but in this case, these gas clouds move unaccompanied by a bound DM structure. Since HVCs are obser…
We have carried out an initial study of a small sample of nearby spiral and barred galaxies with a broad distribution of Hubble types in order to have a first estimate of the magnitude of their secular mass accretion/excretion rates in the context of bulge building and morphological evolution along the Hubble sequence. The stellar surface density maps of the sample galaxies were derived from the archival data of SINGS and SDSS. The corresponding molecular and atomic surface densities were derived from archival CO(1-0) and HI interferometric observations of the BIMA SONG, THINGS, and VIVA surve…
Using the potential-density phase shift approach developed by the present authors in earlier publications, we estimate the magnitude of radial mass accretion/excretion rates across the disks of six nearby spiral galaxies having a range of Hubble types. Our goal is to examine these rates in the context of bulge building and secular morphological evolution along the Hubble sequence. Stellar surface density maps of the sample galaxies are derived from SINGS 3.6um and SDSS i-band images. Corresponding molecular and atomic gas surface densities are derived from published CO(1-0) and HI interferomet…
We investigate how the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) influences the evolution of the Galaxy after the LMC enters into the virial radius of the dark matter halo of the Galaxy for the first time. Both the Galaxy and the LMC are modeled as N-body particles in our models so that the dynamical influences of the LMC on the Galaxy can be investigated in a fully self-consistent manner. Furthermore, the orbital parameters for the LMC are carefully chosen such that the present location of the LMC in the Galaxy can be rather precisely reproduced in our simulations. We particularly investigate the influenc…
We present a multi-wavelength integral field spectroscopic study of the low-z LIRG IRAS F11506-3851, on the basis of VIMOS and SINFONI (ESO-VLT) observations. The morphology and the 2D kinematics of the gaseous (neutral and ionized) and stellar components have been mapped using the NaD doublet, the H$α$ line, and the near-IR CO(2-0) and CO(3-1) bands. The kinematics of the ionized gas and the stars are dominated by rotation, with large observed velocity amplitudes and centrally peaked velocity dispersion maps. The stars lag behind the warm gas and represent a dynamically hotter system, as indi…
The disparity between the density profiles of galactic dark matter haloes predicted by dark matter only cosmological simulations and those inferred from rotation curve decomposition, the so-called cusp-core problem, suggests that baryonic physics has an impact on dark matter density in the central regions of galaxies. Feedback from black holes, supernovae and massive stars may each play a role by removing matter from the centre of the galaxy on shorter timescales than the dynamical time of the dark matter halo. Our goal in this paper is to determine constraints on such feedback scenarios based…
The [CII] 158 um fine structure line is one of the dominant cooling lines in the interstellar medium (ISM) and is an important tracer of star formation. Recent velocity-resolved studies with Herschel/HIFI and SOFIA/GREAT showed that the [CII] line can constrain the properties of the ISM phases in star-forming regions. The [CII] line as a tracer of star formation is particularly important in low-metallicity environments where CO emission is weak because of the presence of large amounts of CO-dark gas. The nearby irregular dwarf galaxy NGC 4214 offers an excellent opportunity to study an activel…
We study the high column density regime of the HI column density distribution function and argue that there are two distinct features: a turnover at NHI ~ 10^21 cm^-2 which is present at both z=0 and z ~ 3, and a lack of systems above NHI ~ 10^22 cm^-2 at z=0. Using observations of the column density distribution, we argue that the HI-H2 transition does not cause the turnover at NHI ~ 10^21 cm^-2, but can plausibly explain the turnover at NHI > 10^22 cm^-2. We compute the HI column density distribution of individual galaxies in the THINGS sample and show that the turnover column density depend…
A clear link between a dwarf-dwarf merger event and enhanced star formation (SF) in the recent past was recently identified in the gas-dominated merger remnant VCC 848, offering by far the clearest view of a gas-rich late-stage dwarf-dwarf merger. We present a joint analysis of JVLA HI emission-line mapping, optical imaging and numerical simulations of VCC 848, in order to examine the impact of the merger on the stellar and gaseous distributions. VCC 848 has less than 30% of its HI gas concentrated within the central high-surface-brightness star-forming region, while the remaining HI is entrai…
