A method to diagnose the gas distribution in the Galactic halo using a shock wave from the Galactic Centre (GC) is presented. Propagation of a shock wave caused by central explosion with released energy $\sim 10^{55}$ erg is calculated for various models of the gaseous halo, and the shock front morphology is compared with the observed North- (NPS) and South-Polar Spurs (SPS). The observed bipolar hyper-shell (BHS) structure of the spurs is reproduced, when a semi-exponential halo model with radially-variable scale height is adopted. A spherical halo model ($β$ model) is shown to be not appropriate to explain the observed BHS shape. Asymmetry of the spurs with respect to the rotation axis and to the galactic plane is explained by large-scale density gradient in the halo across the Galaxy. Such gradient may be produced by ram pressure of the IGM during motion of the Galaxy in the Local Group. A halo model having sinusoidal density fluctuations (clouds) can also explain the asymmetry, given appropriate cloud parameters are chosen. Further irregular features such as filaments and multiple curvatures superposed on the spurs are also understood as due to density fluctuations in the halo.

How the Milky Way has accumulated its mass over the Hubble time, whether significant amounts of gas and stars were accreted from satellite galaxies, or whether the Milky Way has experienced an initial gas assembly and then evolved more-or-less in isolation is one of the burning questions in modern astronomy, because it has consequences for our understanding of galaxy formation in the cosmological context. Here we present the evolutionary model of a Milky Way-type satellite system zoomed into a cosmological large-scale simulation. Embedded into Dark Matter halos and allowing for baryonic proces…
The formation mechanism of the hot gaseous halo associated with the Milky Way Galaxy is still under debate. We report new observational constraints on the gaseous halo using 107 lines-of-sight of the Suzaku X-ray observations at $75^{\circ}<l<285^{\circ}$ and $|b|>15^{\circ}$ with a total exposure of 6.4 Ms. The gaseous halo spectra are represented by a single-temperature plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium. The median temperature of the observed fields is 0.26 keV ($3.0\times10^6$ K) with a typical fluctuation of $\sim30$%. The emission measure varies by an order of magnitude a…
The interaction of Galactic-Centre (GC) super bubbles (GSB) with the gaseous disc and halo of the Milky Way is investigated using radio continuum, X-ray, HI and CO line surveys. The radio North Polar Spur (NPS) constitutes the brightest eastern ridge of GSB, brightening towards the galactic plane and reaching $ l = 22°, \ b = + 2°$ at the sharpest end, where it intersects the tangential direction of the 3-kpc expanding ring and crater. Examination of the spur ridges reveals that the entire GSB, including the NPS and its counter spurs, constitutes a GC-symmetrical $Ω/$\rotatebox[origin=c]{180}{…
We use high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way-sized galaxies with varying supernovae feedback strengths and merger histories to investigate the formation of their gaseous halos and especially their hot ($>10^6$~K) X-ray luminous coronae. Our simulations predict the presence of significant hot gas in the halos as early as $z=3-4$, well before the halos ought to be able to sustain hot mode accretion in the conventional picture. The nascent coronae grow inside-out and initially do so primarily as a result of outflows from the central galaxies powered by merger-induce…
Based on the MWISP survey, we study high-z CO emission toward the tangent points, in which the distances of the molecular clouds (MCs) are well determined. In the region of l=12-26 deg and |b|<5.1 deg, a total of 321 MCs with |z|> 110 pc are identified, of which nearly 30 extreme high-z MCs (EHMCs at |z|> 260 pc) are concentrated in a narrow region of R_GC=2.6-3.1 kpc. The EHMC concentrations, together with other high-z MCs at R_GC=2.3-2.6 kpc, constitute molecular crater-wall structures surrounding the edges of the HI voids that are physically associated with the Fermi bubbles. Intriguingly, …
We have carried out a controlled comparison of the structural and kinematic properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around Milky Way mass galaxies in the Illustris and IllustrisTNG simulations. Very striking differences are found. At z=0, gas column density and temperature profiles at large radii ($\sim 100$ kpc) correlate strongly with disk gas mass fraction in Illustris, but not in TNG. The neutral gas at large radii is preferentially aligned in the plane of the disk in TNG, whereas it is much more isotropic in Illustris. The vertical coherence scale of the rotationally supported gas i…
The warm ($\log~T\approx5$) gas is an important gaseous component in the galaxy baryonic cycle. We built a 2-dimension disk-CGM model to study the warm gas distribution of the Milky Way (MW) using the absorption line surveys of Si IV and O VI. In this model, the disk component of both ions has the same density profile ($n(r, z)=n_0\exp(-|z|/z_0)\exp(-r/r_0)$) with a scale height of $z_0=2.6\pm0.4\rm~kpc$ and a scale length of $r_0=6.1\pm1.2\rm~kpc$. For this disk component, we calculate the warm gas mass of $\log(M/M_\odot)=(7.6\pm0.2)-\log\frac{Z}{Z_\odot}$. The similar disk density profiles …
Hot, million degree gas appears to pervade the Milky way halo, containing a large fraction of the Galactic missing baryons. This circumgalactic medium (CGM) is probed effectively in X-rays, both in absorption and in emission. The CGM also appears to be anisotropic, so we have started a program to determine CGM properties along several sightlines by combining absorption and emission measurements. Here we present the emission measure close to the \mrk509 sightline using new \suzaku and \xmm observations. We also present new analysis and modeling of \chandra HETG spectra to constrain the absorpti…
In the centres of the Milky Way and M83, the global environmental properties thought to control star formation are very similar. However, M83's nuclear star formation rate (SFR), as estimated by synchrotron and H-alpha emission, is an order of magnitude higher than the Milky Way's. To understand the origin of this difference we use ALMA observations of HCN (1-0) and HCO+ (1-0) to trace the dense gas at the size scale of individual molecular clouds (0.54", 12pc) in the inner ~500 pc of M83, and compare this to gas clouds at similar resolution and galactocentric radius in the Milky Way. We find …
We propose a novel method to constrain the Milky Way (MW) mass $M_{\rm vir}$ with its corona temperature observations. For a given corona density profile, one can derive its temperature distribution assuming a generalized equilibrium model with non-thermal pressure support. While the derived temperature profile decreases substantially with radius, the X-ray-emission-weighted average temperature, which depends most sensitively on $M_{\rm vir}$, is quite uniform toward different sight lines, consistent with X-ray observations. For an Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) total matter distribution, the coron…
Evidence for wave-like corrugations are well established in the Milky Way and in nearby disc galaxies. These were originally detected as a displacement of the interstellar medium about the midplane, either in terms of vertical distance or vertical velocity. Over the past decade, similar patterns have emerged in the Milky Way's stellar disc. We investigate how these vertical waves are triggered by a passing satellite. Using high-resolution N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, we systematically study how the corrugations set up and evolve jointly in the stellar and gaseous discs. We find that the …
We derive unbiased distance estimates for the Gaia-TGAS dataset by correcting for the bias due to the distance dependence of the selection function, which we measure directly from the data. From these distances and proper motions, we estimate the vertical and azimuthal velocities, $W$ and $V_ϕ$, and angular momentum $L_z$ for stars in the Galactic centre and anti-centre directions. The resulting mean vertical motion $\overline{W}$ shows a linear increase with both $V_ϕ$ and $L_z$ at $10 σ$ significance. Such a trend is expected from and consistent with the known Galactic warp. This signal exte…
Because of strong and spatially highly variable interstellar extinction and extreme source crowding, the faint (K>15) stellar population in the Milky Way's nuclear cluster is still poorly studied. RR Lyrae stars provide us with a tool to estimate the mass of the oldest, relative dim stellar population. Recently, we analyzed HST/WFC3/IR observations of the central 2.3'x2.3' of the Milky Way and found 21 variable stars with periods between 0.2 and 1d. Here, we present a further comprehensive analysis of these stars. The period-luminosity relationship of RR Lyrae is used to derive their extinctio…
Theoretical and observational arguments suggest that there is a large amount of hot ($\sim 10^6$ K), diffuse gas residing in the Milky Way's halo, while its total mass and spatial distribution are still unclear. In this work, we present a general model for the gas density distribution in the Galactic halo, and investigate the gas evolution under radiative cooling with a series of 2D hydrodynamic simulations. We find that the mass inflow rate in the developed cooling flow increases with gas metallicity and the total gas mass in the halo. For a fixed halo gas mass, the spatial gas distribution a…
It has been recently demonstrated that both, a classical Schwarzschild black hole (BH), and a dense concentration of self-gravitating fermionic dark matter (DM) placed at the Galaxy centre, can explain the precise astrometric data (positions and radial velocities) of the S-stars orbiting SgrA*. This result encompasses the 17 best resolved S-stars, and includes the test of general relativistic effects such as the gravitational redshift in the S2-star. In addition, the DM model features another remarkable result: the dense core of fermions is the central region of a continuous density distributi…

The high velocity gradient observed in the compact cloud CO-0.40-0.22, at a projected distance of 60 pc from the centre of the Milky Way, has led its discoverers to identify the closeby mm continuum emitter, CO-0.40-0.22*, with an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) candidate. We describe the interaction between CO-0.40-0.22 and the IMBH, by means of a simple analytical model and of hydrodynamical simulations. Through such calculation, we obtain a lower limit to the mass of CO-0.40-0.22* of few $10^4 \times \; M_{\odot}$. This result tends to exclude the formation of such massive black hole in…
NGC 6744 is the nearest and brightest south-hemisphere galaxy with a morphological type similar to that of the Milky Way. Using data obtained with the Integral Field Unit of the Gemini South Multi-Object Spectrograph, we found that this galaxy has a nucleus with LINER (Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Region) surrounded by three line emitting regions. The analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope archival images revealed that the nucleus is associated with a blue compact source, probably corresponding to the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The circumnuclear emission seems to be part of the ext…
Knowing the metallicity distribution of stars in the Galactic Centre has important implications for the formation history of the Milky Way nuclear star cluster. However, this distribution is not well known, and is currently based on a small sample of fewer than 100 stars. We obtained near-infrared K-band spectra of more than 700 late-type stars in the central 4 pc^2 of the Milky Way nuclear star cluster with the integral-field spectrograph KMOS (VLT). We analyse the medium-resolution spectra using a full-spectral fitting method employing the Göttingen Spectral library of synthetic PHOENIX spec…
Sgr A$^*$ is the super massive black hole residing in the centre of the Milky Way. There is plenty of observational evidence that a massive gas cloud fell into the central parsec of the Milky Way $\sim 6$ million years ago, triggering formation of a disc of young stars and activating Sgr A$^*$. In addition to the disc, there is an unexplained population of young stars on randomly oriented orbits. Here we hypothesize that these young stars were formed by fragmentation of a massive quasi-spherical gas shell driven out from Sgr A$^*$ potential well by an energetic outflow. To account for the prop…
The galactic gaseous halo is a gas reservoir for the interstellar medium in the galaxy disk, supplying materials for star formation. We developed a gaseous halo model connecting the galaxy disk and the gaseous halo by assuming the star formation rate on the disk is balanced by the radiative cooling rate of the gaseous halo, including stellar feedback. In addition to a single-temperature gaseous halo in collisional ionization equilibrium, we also consider the photoionization effect and a steady-state cooling model. Photoionization is important for modifying the ion distribution in low-mass gala…
The nature of the gaseous and dusty cloud G2 in the Galactic Centre is still under debate. We present three-dimensional hydrodynamical adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulations of G2, modeled as an outflow from a "compact source" moving on the observed orbit. The construction of mock position-velocity (PV) diagrams enables a direct comparison with observations and allow us to conclude that the observational properties of the gaseous component of G2 could be matched by a massive ($\dot{M}_\mathrm{w}=5\times 10^{-7} \;M_{\odot} \mathrm{yr^{-1}}$) and slow ($50 \;\mathrm{km \;s^{-1}}$) outflow, …
We derive the circular velocity curves of the gaseous and stellar discs of UGC 4056, a giant barred galaxy with an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We analyse UGC 4056 using the 2D spectroscopy obtained within the framework of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey. Using images and the colour index g-r from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we determined the tilt of the galaxy, which allows us to conclude that the galaxy rotates clockwise with trailing spiral arms. We found that the gas motion at the central part of the UGC 4056 shows peculiar features. The rotation velocity of th…
The position of the Sun inside the Milky Way's disc hampers the study of the spiral arm structure. We aim to analyse the spiral arms along the line-of-sight towards the Galactic centre (GC) to determine their distance, extinction, and stellar population. We use the GALACTICNUCLEUS survey, a JHKs high angular resolution photometric catalogue (0.2") for the innermost regions of the Galaxy. We fitted simple synthetic colour-magnitude models to our data via $χ^2$ minimisation. We computed the distance and extinction to the detected spiral arms. We also analysed the extinction curve and the relativ…
Using recent observational data, we construct a set of multi-component equilibrium models of the disk of a Milky Way-like galaxy. The disk dynamics are studied using collisionless-gaseous numerical simulations, based on the joined integration of the equations of motion for the collision-less particles using direct integration of gravitational interaction and the gaseous SPH-particles. We find that after approximately one Gyr, a prominent central bar is formed having a semi-axis length of about three kpc, together with a multi-armed spiral pattern represented by a superposition of $m=$ 2-, 3-, …
The Milky Way is surrounded by large amounts of gaseous matter that are slowly being accreted over cosmic timescales to support star formation in the disk. The corresponding gas-accretion rate represents a key parameter for the past, present, and future evolution of the Milky Way. In this article, I discuss our current understanding of gas accretion processes in the Galaxy by reviewing past and recent observational and theoretical studies. The first part of this review deals with the spatial distribution of the different gas phases in the Milky Way halo, the origin of the gas, and its total ma…
To characterize the absorption properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its relation to the LG we present the so-far largest survey of metal absorption in Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra of extragalactic background sources. The UV data are obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and are supplemented by 21 cm radio observations of neutral hydrogen. Along 270 sightlines we measure metal absorption in the lines of SiII, SiIII, CII, and CIV and associated HI 21 cm emission in HVCs in the vel…
It is widely accepted that black holes (BHs) with masses greater than a million solar masses (Msun) lurk at the centres of massive galaxies. The origins of such `supermassive' black holes (SMBHs) remain unknown (Djorgovski et al. 1999), while those of stellar-mass BHs are well-understood. One possible scenario is that intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), which are formed by the runaway coalescence of stars in young compact star clusters (Portagies Zwart et al. 1999), merge at the centre of a galaxy to form an SMBH (Ebisuzaki et al. 2001). Although many candidates for IMBHs have been proposed…
The extended hot X-ray emitting gaseous halo of the Milky Way has an optical depth $\sim1$ for the dominant emission lines of \ion{O}{7} and \ion{O}{8}, which are used to infer the halo properties. To improve on halo gas properties, we treat optical depth effects with a Monte-Carlo radiative transfer model, which leads to slightly steeper density profiles ($β\approx 0.5$) than if optical depths effects were ignored. For the preferred model where the halo is rotating on cylinders at $180$ km s$^{-1}$, independent fits to both lines lead to identical results, where the core radius is $2.5$ kpc a…
The Milky Way's nuclear stellar disc (NSD) and nuclear star cluster (NSC) are the main features of the Galactic centre. Nevertheless, their observation is hampered by the extreme source crowding and high extinction. Hence, their relation and formation scenario are not fully clear yet. We aim at detecting the stellar populations from the NSC and the NSD along the line-of-sight towards the NSC, and assess whether they have different stellar populations and star formation histories. We analysed the colour-magnitude diagram, $K_s$ vs. $H-K_s$, of a region of $8.2'\times2.8'$ centred on the NSC, an…
The inconsistency of the observed rotational velocity curve of the Milky Way with the current theory of gravitational dynamics is well documented. The curve implies the presence of significantly more mass, or dark matter, than is observable. Current models estimate the amount of dark matter to be of the order of 85% of total matter. This paper explores relativistic neutrinos as a potential source of dark matter and proposes a crude binary star accretion model mechanism at the centre of the Milky Way for their production. The results show this to be consistent with the current theory of gravita…
Using proper motion measurements from Gaia DR2, we probe the origin of 26 previously known hypervelocity stars (HVSs) around the Milky Way. We find that a significant fraction of these stars have a high probability of originating close to the Milky Way centre, but there is one obvious outlier. HVS3 is highly likely to be coming almost from the centre of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). During its closest approach, $21.1^{+6.1}_{-4.6}$ Myr ago, it had a relative velocity of $870^{+69}_{-66}$ kms$^{-1}$ with respect to the LMC. This large kick velocity is only consistent with the Hills mechanis…
