Recent observations show that spiral galaxies are surrounded by extended gaseous halos as predicted by the hierarchical structure formation scenario. The origin and nature of extraplanar gas is often unclear since the halo is continuously fueled by different circulation processes as part of the on-going formation and evolution of galaxies (e.g., outflows, galaxy merging, and gas accretion from the intergalactic medium). We use the Milky Way as a laboratory to study neutral and mildly ionised gas located in the inner and outer halo. Using spectral line absorption and emission measurements in different wavelength regimes we obtain detailed information on the physical conditions and the distribution of the gas. Such studies are crucial for our understanding of the complex interplay between galaxies and their gaseous environment as part of the formation and evolution of galaxies. Our analysis suggests that the column-density distribution and physical properties of gas in the Milky Way halo are very similar to that around other disk galaxies at low and high redshifts.

The high ionization-state ions trace the hot gases in the universe, of which gaseous halos around galaxies are a major contributor. Following Qu & Bregman (2018), we calculate the gaseous halo contribution to the observed column density distributions for these ions by convolving the gaseous halo model with the observed stellar mass function. The predicted column density distribution reproduces the general shape of the observed column density distribution -- a broken power law with the break point at $\log N=14.0$ for {\OVI}. Our modeling suggests that the high column density systems originate …
How the Milky Way has accumulated its mass over the Hubble time, whether significant amounts of gas and stars were accreted from satellite galaxies, or whether the Milky Way has experienced an initial gas assembly and then evolved more-or-less in isolation is one of the burning questions in modern astronomy, because it has consequences for our understanding of galaxy formation in the cosmological context. Here we present the evolutionary model of a Milky Way-type satellite system zoomed into a cosmological large-scale simulation. Embedded into Dark Matter halos and allowing for baryonic proces…
The galactic gaseous halo is a gas reservoir for the interstellar medium in the galaxy disk, supplying materials for star formation. We developed a gaseous halo model connecting the galaxy disk and the gaseous halo by assuming the star formation rate on the disk is balanced by the radiative cooling rate of the gaseous halo, including stellar feedback. In addition to a single-temperature gaseous halo in collisional ionization equilibrium, we also consider the photoionization effect and a steady-state cooling model. Photoionization is important for modifying the ion distribution in low-mass gala…
The formation mechanism of the hot gaseous halo associated with the Milky Way Galaxy is still under debate. We report new observational constraints on the gaseous halo using 107 lines-of-sight of the Suzaku X-ray observations at $75^{\circ}<l<285^{\circ}$ and $|b|>15^{\circ}$ with a total exposure of 6.4 Ms. The gaseous halo spectra are represented by a single-temperature plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium. The median temperature of the observed fields is 0.26 keV ($3.0\times10^6$ K) with a typical fluctuation of $\sim30$%. The emission measure varies by an order of magnitude a…
A method to diagnose the gas distribution in the Galactic halo using a shock wave from the Galactic Centre (GC) is presented. Propagation of a shock wave caused by central explosion with released energy $\sim 10^{55}$ erg is calculated for various models of the gaseous halo, and the shock front morphology is compared with the observed North- (NPS) and South-Polar Spurs (SPS). The observed bipolar hyper-shell (BHS) structure of the spurs is reproduced, when a semi-exponential halo model with radially-variable scale height is adopted. A spherical halo model ($β$ model) is shown to be not appropr…
We use high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way-sized galaxies with varying supernovae feedback strengths and merger histories to investigate the formation of their gaseous halos and especially their hot ($>10^6$~K) X-ray luminous coronae. Our simulations predict the presence of significant hot gas in the halos as early as $z=3-4$, well before the halos ought to be able to sustain hot mode accretion in the conventional picture. The nascent coronae grow inside-out and initially do so primarily as a result of outflows from the central galaxies powered by merger-induce…
Based on the MWISP survey, we study high-z CO emission toward the tangent points, in which the distances of the molecular clouds (MCs) are well determined. In the region of l=12-26 deg and |b|<5.1 deg, a total of 321 MCs with |z|> 110 pc are identified, of which nearly 30 extreme high-z MCs (EHMCs at |z|> 260 pc) are concentrated in a narrow region of R_GC=2.6-3.1 kpc. The EHMC concentrations, together with other high-z MCs at R_GC=2.3-2.6 kpc, constitute molecular crater-wall structures surrounding the edges of the HI voids that are physically associated with the Fermi bubbles. Intriguingly, …
We have carried out a controlled comparison of the structural and kinematic properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around Milky Way mass galaxies in the Illustris and IllustrisTNG simulations. Very striking differences are found. At z=0, gas column density and temperature profiles at large radii ($\sim 100$ kpc) correlate strongly with disk gas mass fraction in Illustris, but not in TNG. The neutral gas at large radii is preferentially aligned in the plane of the disk in TNG, whereas it is much more isotropic in Illustris. The vertical coherence scale of the rotationally supported gas i…
We have obtained column density maps for an unbiased sample of 120 molecular clouds in the third quadrant of the Milky Way mid-plane (b$\le |5|^{\circ}$) within the galactic longitude range from 195$^{\circ}$ to 225$^{\circ}$, using the high sensitivity $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO ($J=1-0$) data from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project. The probability density functions of the molecular hydrogen column density of the clouds, N-PDFs, are fitted with both log-normal (LN) function and log-normal plus power-law (LN+PL) function. The molecular clouds are classified into three categori…
The warm ($\log~T\approx5$) gas is an important gaseous component in the galaxy baryonic cycle. We built a 2-dimension disk-CGM model to study the warm gas distribution of the Milky Way (MW) using the absorption line surveys of Si IV and O VI. In this model, the disk component of both ions has the same density profile ($n(r, z)=n_0\exp(-|z|/z_0)\exp(-r/r_0)$) with a scale height of $z_0=2.6\pm0.4\rm~kpc$ and a scale length of $r_0=6.1\pm1.2\rm~kpc$. For this disk component, we calculate the warm gas mass of $\log(M/M_\odot)=(7.6\pm0.2)-\log\frac{Z}{Z_\odot}$. The similar disk density profiles …
Recent submillimeter and far-infrared wavelength observations of absorption in the rotational ground-state lines of various simple molecules against distant Galactic continuum sources have opened the possibility of studying the chemistry of diffuse molecular clouds throughout the Milky Way. In order to calculate abundances, the column densities of molecular and atomic hydrogen, HI, must be known. We aim at determining the atomic hydrogen column densities for diffuse clouds located on the sight lines toward a sample of prominent high-mass star-forming regions that were intensely studied with th…
Hot, million degree gas appears to pervade the Milky way halo, containing a large fraction of the Galactic missing baryons. This circumgalactic medium (CGM) is probed effectively in X-rays, both in absorption and in emission. The CGM also appears to be anisotropic, so we have started a program to determine CGM properties along several sightlines by combining absorption and emission measurements. Here we present the emission measure close to the \mrk509 sightline using new \suzaku and \xmm observations. We also present new analysis and modeling of \chandra HETG spectra to constrain the absorpti…
We propose a novel method to constrain the Milky Way (MW) mass $M_{\rm vir}$ with its corona temperature observations. For a given corona density profile, one can derive its temperature distribution assuming a generalized equilibrium model with non-thermal pressure support. While the derived temperature profile decreases substantially with radius, the X-ray-emission-weighted average temperature, which depends most sensitively on $M_{\rm vir}$, is quite uniform toward different sight lines, consistent with X-ray observations. For an Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) total matter distribution, the coron…
Evidence for wave-like corrugations are well established in the Milky Way and in nearby disc galaxies. These were originally detected as a displacement of the interstellar medium about the midplane, either in terms of vertical distance or vertical velocity. Over the past decade, similar patterns have emerged in the Milky Way's stellar disc. We investigate how these vertical waves are triggered by a passing satellite. Using high-resolution N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, we systematically study how the corrugations set up and evolve jointly in the stellar and gaseous discs. We find that the …
Theoretical and observational arguments suggest that there is a large amount of hot ($\sim 10^6$ K), diffuse gas residing in the Milky Way's halo, while its total mass and spatial distribution are still unclear. In this work, we present a general model for the gas density distribution in the Galactic halo, and investigate the gas evolution under radiative cooling with a series of 2D hydrodynamic simulations. We find that the mass inflow rate in the developed cooling flow increases with gas metallicity and the total gas mass in the halo. For a fixed halo gas mass, the spatial gas distribution a…

We present the results of a survey of interstellar O~{\small VI} absorption in the Milky Way (MW) towards {69} stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) obtained with the \textit{Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE)}. The integrated MW O~{\small VI} column densities log N(O~{\small VI}) are in the range from 13.68 to 14.73 with a mean of {14.26$_{-0.09}^{+0.07}$} atoms cm$^{-2}$. The O~{\small VI} exponential scale height is found to be {2.28$\pm$1.06} kpc. The O~{\small VI} column density correlates with the Doppler parameter $\it b$. The O~{\small VI} velocity dispersion ranges from…
We aim to compare variations in the full-UV dust extinction curve (912-3000 Angstrom), with the HI/H$_2$/total H content along diffuse Milky Way sightlines, to investigate possible connections between ISM conditions and dust properties. We combine an existing sample of 75 UV extinction curves based on IUE and FUSE data, with atomic and molecular column densities measured through UV absorption. The H$_2$ column density data are based on existing Lyman-Werner absorption band models from earlier work on the extinction curves. Literature values for the HI column density were compiled, and improved…
We analyze circumgalactic medium (CGM) in a suite of high-resolution cosmological re-simulations of a Milky-Way size galaxy and show that CGM properties are quite sensitive to details of star formation--feedback loop modelling. The simulation that produces a realistic late-type galaxy, fails to reproduce existing observations of the CGM. In contrast, simulation that does not produce a realistic galaxy has the predicted CGM in better agreement with observations. This illustrates that properties of galaxies and properties of their CGM provide strong ${\it complementary}$ constraints on the proce…
NGC 6744 is the nearest and brightest south-hemisphere galaxy with a morphological type similar to that of the Milky Way. Using data obtained with the Integral Field Unit of the Gemini South Multi-Object Spectrograph, we found that this galaxy has a nucleus with LINER (Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Region) surrounded by three line emitting regions. The analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope archival images revealed that the nucleus is associated with a blue compact source, probably corresponding to the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The circumnuclear emission seems to be part of the ext…
Describing how the properties of the interstellar medium combine across size-scales is crucial for understanding star formation scaling laws and connecting Galactic and extragalactic data of molecular clouds. We describe how the statistical structure of clouds, and its connection to star formation, changes from sub-parsec to kiloparsec scales in a complete region within the Milky Way disk. We build a census of molecular clouds within 2 kpc from the Sun using literature. We examine the dust-based column density probability distributions (N-PDFs) of the clouds and their relation to star formatio…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM), i.e. the gaseous haloes around galaxies, is both the reservoir of gas that fuels galaxy growth and the repository of gas expelled by galactic winds. Most cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations focus their computational effort on the galaxies themselves and treat the CGM more coarsely, which means small-scale structure cannot be resolved. We get around this issue by running zoom-in simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy with standard mass refinement and additional uniform spatial refinement within the virial radius. This results in a detailed view of its gaseo…
We combine the Santa-Cruz Semi-Analytic Model (SAM) for galaxy formation and evolution with the circumgalactic medium (CGM) model presented in Faerman et al. (2020) to explore the CGM properties of $L^{*}$ galaxies. We use the SAM to generate a sample of galaxies with halo masses similar to the Milky Way (MW) halo, $M_{\rm vir} \approx 10^{12}~{\rm M_{sun}}$, and find that the CGM mass and mean metallicity in the sample are correlated. We use the CGM masses and metallicities of the SAM galaxies as inputs for the FSM20 model, and vary the amount of non-thermal support. The density profiles in o…
Hydrogen column densities inferred from X-ray absorption are typically 5 - 30 times larger than the neutral atomic hydrogen column densities derived from 21cm HI absorption toward radio-loud active galactic nuclei. Some part of the difference is ascribed to uncertainty in the spin temperature \Tsp\ = 100 K that is often used to convert 21cm HI HI absorption to N(HI). Here we propose another way to infer the gas column from HI absorption. In our Galaxy there is a nearly linear correlation between the inteferometrically-measured integrated 21cm HI absorption \WHI\ and reddening, \WHI\ $\propto$ …
Using recent observational data, we construct a set of multi-component equilibrium models of the disk of a Milky Way-like galaxy. The disk dynamics are studied using collisionless-gaseous numerical simulations, based on the joined integration of the equations of motion for the collision-less particles using direct integration of gravitational interaction and the gaseous SPH-particles. We find that after approximately one Gyr, a prominent central bar is formed having a semi-axis length of about three kpc, together with a multi-armed spiral pattern represented by a superposition of $m=$ 2-, 3-, …
We compare molecular gas properties in the starbursting center of NGC253 and the Milky Way Galactic Center (GC) on scales of ~1-100 pc using dendograms and resolution-, area- and noise-matched datasets in CO (1-0) and CO (3-2). We find that the size-line width relations in NGC253 and the GC have similar slope, but NGC253 has larger line widths by factors of ~2-3. The $σ^2/R$ dependency on column density shows that, in the GC, on scales of 10-100 pc the kinematics of gas over $N>3\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ are compatible with gravitationally bound structures. In NGC253 this is only the case for c…
The Milky Way is surrounded by large amounts of gaseous matter that are slowly being accreted over cosmic timescales to support star formation in the disk. The corresponding gas-accretion rate represents a key parameter for the past, present, and future evolution of the Milky Way. In this article, I discuss our current understanding of gas accretion processes in the Galaxy by reviewing past and recent observational and theoretical studies. The first part of this review deals with the spatial distribution of the different gas phases in the Milky Way halo, the origin of the gas, and its total ma…
We examine the effects of SMBH feedback on the CGM using a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation \citep[{\sc Romulus25};][]{Tremmel2017} and a set of four zoom-in `genetically modified' Milky Way-mass galaxies sampling different evolutionary paths. By tracing the distribution of metals in the circumgalactic medium (CGM), we show that \ion{O}{6} is a sensitive indicator of supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback. First, we calculate the column densities of \ion{O}{6} in simulated Milky Way-mass galaxies and compare them with observations from the COS-Halos Survey. Our simulations show column den…
To characterize the absorption properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its relation to the LG we present the so-far largest survey of metal absorption in Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra of extragalactic background sources. The UV data are obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and are supplemented by 21 cm radio observations of neutral hydrogen. Along 270 sightlines we measure metal absorption in the lines of SiII, SiIII, CII, and CIV and associated HI 21 cm emission in HVCs in the vel…
The hot gas in galaxy halos may account for a significant fraction of missing baryons in galaxies, and some of these gases can be traced by high ionization absorption systems in QSO UV spectra. Using high S/N ratio $ HST$/COS spectra, we discovered a high ionization state system at $z=1.1912$ in the sightline toward \object{LBQS 1435-0134}, and two-components absorption lines are matched for Mg X, Ne VIII, Ne VI, O VI, Ne V, O V, Ne IV, O IV, N IV, O III, and H I. Mg X, detected for the first time ($5.8 σ$), is a particularly direct tracer of hot galactic halos, as its peak ion fraction occurs…
The extended hot X-ray emitting gaseous halo of the Milky Way has an optical depth $\sim1$ for the dominant emission lines of \ion{O}{7} and \ion{O}{8}, which are used to infer the halo properties. To improve on halo gas properties, we treat optical depth effects with a Monte-Carlo radiative transfer model, which leads to slightly steeper density profiles ($β\approx 0.5$) than if optical depths effects were ignored. For the preferred model where the halo is rotating on cylinders at $180$ km s$^{-1}$, independent fits to both lines lead to identical results, where the core radius is $2.5$ kpc a…
We present the far-ultraviolet (FUV) fluorescent molecular hydrogen (H_2) emission map of the Milky Way Galaxy obtained with FIMS/SPEAR covering ~76% of the sky. The extinction-corrected intensity of the fluorescent H_2 emission has a strong linear correlation with the well-known tracers of the cold interstellar medium (ISM), including color excess E(B-V), neutral hydrogen column density N(H I), and H_alpha emission. The all-sky H_2 column density map was also obtained using a simple photodissociation region model and interstellar radiation fields derived from UV star catalogs. We estimated th…
We present a search for gas-containing dwarf galaxies as satellite systems around nearby spiral galaxies using 21 cm neutral hydrogen (HI) data from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Survey. We have identified 15 spiral `primary' galaxies in a local volume of 10 Mpc with a range of total masses, and have found 19 gas-containing dwarf satellite candidates within the primaries' virial volumes ($R_{200}$) and 46 candidates within $2R_{200}$. Our sensitivity using ALFALFA data converts to $M_{\rm HI} \approx 7.4 \times 10^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$ at 10 Mpc, which includes 13 of the 26 gaseous dwarf g…
We present a scenario of the chemical enrichment of the solar neighborhood that solves the G-dwarf problem by taking into account constraints on a larger scale. We argue that the Milky Way disk within 10 kpc has been enriched to solar metallicity by a massive stellar population: the thick disk, which itself formed from a massive turbulent gaseous disk. The key new consideration is that the pre-enrichment provided by the thick disk is not related to the mass fraction of this stellar population at the solar radius, as is classically assumed in inside-out scenarios, but is actually related to the…
Using observational data on the kinematical properties and density distributions of the subsystems of the Milky Way galaxy, we construct a set of multi-component equilibrium models of its disk. The dynamics of the disk is studied numerically using collisionless-gaseous numerical simulations. After approximately one Gyr, a prominent central bar is formed with a semi-axis of about three kiloparsecs. Outside the central regions, a multi-armed spiral pattern develops, which can be characterized by the superposition of m=2, 3 and 4-armed spiral patterns. The spiral structure and the bar exist for a…
