Numerical models of disc galaxy formation predict the existence of extended, hot ( T~10^6 K) gas haloes around present day spirals. The X-ray luminosity of these haloes is predicted to increase strongly with galaxy mass. However, searches for their X-ray emission have not been successful so far. We calculate the all sky O VII column density distributions for the haloes of three Milky Way like disc galaxies, resulting from cosmological high-resolution, N-body/gasdynamical simulations. We perform calculations both including the disc gas and without it, so the disc contribution to the column density is quantified. It is found that the column densities estimated for Milky Way-like galaxies are just below the observational upper limit, making a test of the hot halo paradigm likely within observational reach.
We use the NIHAO galaxy formation simulations to make predictions for the baryonic budget in present day galaxies ranging from dwarf to Milky Way masses. The sample is made of 88 independent high resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations. NIHAO galaxies reproduce key properties of observed galaxies, such as the stellar mass vs halo mass and cold gas vs stellar mass relations. Thus they make plausible predictions for the baryon budget. We present the mass fractions of stars, cold gas ($T<10^4$K), cool gas ($10^4 < T < 10^5$K), warm-hot gas ($10^5 < T < 5\times10^6$K), and hot gas (T$> 5\times…
We report the detection of extended Lyman-alpha (Lya) haloes around 145 individual star-forming galaxies at redshifts 3<z<6 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field observed with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer at ESO-VLT. Our sample consists of continuum-faint (-15> M_{UV}> -22) Lya emitters (LAEs). Using a 2D, two-component decomposition of Lya emission assuming circular exponential distributions, we measure scale lengths and luminosities of Lya haloes. We find that 80% of our objects having reliable Lya halo measurements show Lya emission that is significantly more extended than the UV continuu…
The gas cycling in the circumgalactic regions of galaxies is known to be multi-phase. The MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey gathers a large multi-wavelength observational sample of absorption and emission data with the goal to significantly advance our understanding of the physical properties of such CGM gas. A key component of the MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey is the multi-facility observational campaign conducted with VLT/MUSE, ALMA and HST. MUSE-ALMA Haloes targets comprise 19 VLT/MUSE IFS quasar fields, including 32 $z_{\rm abs}<$0.85 strong absorbers with measured N$_{HI}$ $\geq 10^{18}$ cm$^{\rm -2}$ fr…
We use the EAGLE cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations to predict the column density and equivalent width distributions of intergalactic O VII ($E=574$ eV) and O VIII ($E=654$ eV) absorbers at low redshift. These two ions are predicted to account for 40% of the gas-phase oxygen, which implies that they are key tracers of cosmic metals. We find that their column density distributions evolve little at observable column densities from redshift 1 to 0, and that they are sensitive to AGN feedback, which strongly reduces the number of strong (column density $N \gtrsim 10^{16} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2})…
The distribution of gas and metals in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) plays a critical role in how galaxies evolve. The MUSE-ALMA Halos survey combines MUSE, ALMA and HST observations to constrain the properties of the multi-phase gas in the CGM and the galaxies associated with the gas probed in absorption. In this paper, we analyse the properties of galaxies associated with 32 strong \ion{H}{i} Ly-$α$ absorbers at redshift $0.2 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.4$. We detect 79 galaxies within $\pm 500$ \kms \!of the absorbers in our 19 MUSE fields. These associated galaxies are found at physical distanc…
We explore the relationship between X-ray absorption and optical obscuration within the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) which has been collecting and analyzing the optical and X-ray spectra for 641 hard X-ray selected ($E>14$ keV) active galactic nuclei (AGN). We use the deviation from a linear broad H$α$-to-X-ray relationship as an estimate of the maximum optical obscuration towards the broad line region and compare the $A_{\rm V}$ to the hydrogen column densities ($N_{\rm H}$) found through systematic modeling of their X-ray spectra. We find that the inferred columns implied by $A_{\rm V…
We use the EAGLE (Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments) cosmological simulation to study the distribution of baryons, and far-ultraviolet (O VI), extreme-ultraviolet (Ne VIII) and X-ray (O VII, O VIII, Ne IX, and Fe XVII) line absorbers, around galaxies and haloes of mass $\mathrm{M}_{200c}=10^{11}$-$10^{14.5}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ at redshift 0.1. EAGLE predicts that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) contains more metals than the interstellar medium across halo masses. The ions we study here trace the warm-hot, volume-filling phase of the CGM, but are biased towards temperat…
We present an analysis of seven strongly gravitationally lensed quasars and the corresponding constraints on the properties of dark matter. Our results are derived by modelling the lensed image positions and flux-ratios using a combination of smooth macro models and a population of low-mass haloes within the mass range 10^6 to 10^9 Msun. Our lens models explicitly include higher-order complexity in the form of stellar discs and luminous satellites, as well as low-mass haloes located along the observed lines of sight for the first time. Assuming a Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmology, we infer an a…
We study the hot and cold circum-galactic medium (CGM) of 86 galaxies of the cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation suite NIHAO. NIHAO allows a study of how the $z=0$ CGM varies across 5 orders of magnitude of stellar mass using OVI and HI as proxies for hot and cold gas. The cool HI covering fraction and column density profiles match observations well, particularly in the inner CGM. OVI shows increasing column densities with mass, a trend seemingly echoed in the observations. As in multiple previous simulations, the OVI column densities in simulations are lower than observed and optically th…
Many of the baryons associated with a galaxy reside in its circumgalactic medium (CGM), in a diffuse volume-filling phase at roughly the virial temperature. Much of the oxygen produced over cosmic time by the galaxy's stars also ends up there. The resulting absorption lines in the spectra of UV and X-ray background sources are powerful diagnostics of the feedback processes that prevent more of those baryons from forming stars. This paper presents predictions for CGM absorption lines (O VI, O VII, O VIII, Ne VIII, N V) that are based on precipitation-regulated feedback models, which posit that …
We investigate high-redshift galaxy sizes using a semi-analytic model constructed for the Dark-ages Reionization And Galaxy-formation Observables from Numerical Simulation project. Our fiducial model, including strong feedback from supernovae and photoionization background, accurately reproduces the evolution of the stellar mass function and UV luminosity function. Using this model, we study the size--luminosity relation of galaxies and find that the effective radius scales with UV luminosity as $R_\mathrm{e}\propto L^{0.25}$ at $z{\sim}5$--$9$. We show that recently discovered very luminous g…
We report on the detection of two Ne VIII absorbers, at z = 0.61907 and z = 0.57052 in the HST/COS spectrum of background quasars SDSS J 080908.13+461925.6 and SBS 1122+594 respectively. The Ne VIII 770 line is at $\sim 3σ$ significance. In both instances, the NeVIII is found to be tracing gas with $T \gtrsim 10^5$ K, predominantly collisionally ionized, with moderate densities of $n_{H} \lesssim 10^{-4}$ $cm^{-3}$, sub-solar metallicities and total hydrogen column densities of $N(H) \gtrsim 10^{19}$ $cm^{2}$. In the z = 0.61907 absorber, the low, intermediate ions and O VI are consistent with…
We report the detection of Ne VIII in a z_abs = 0.59961 absorber towards the QSO PG 1407+265 (z_em = 0.94). Besides Ne VIII, absorption from HI Lyman series lines (HI 1025 - 915), several other low (C II, N II, O II, and S II), intermediate (C III, N III, N IV, O III, S IV, and S V) and high (S VI, O VI, and Ne VIII) ionization metal lines are detected. Disparity in the absorption line kinematics between different ions implies that the absorbing gas comprises of multiple ionization phases. The low and the intermediate ions (except S V) trace a compact (~ 410 pc), metal-rich (Z ~ Z_sun) and ove…
This paper examines the ultraviolet and X-ray photons generated by hot gas in the Galactic thick disk or halo in the Draco region of the northern hemisphere. Our analysis uses the intensities from four ions, C IV, O VI, O VII, and O VIII, sampling temperatures of ~100,000 to ~3,000,000 K. We measured the O VI, O VII and O VIII intensities from FUSE and XMM-Newton data and subtracted off the local contributions in order to deduce the thick disk/halo contributions. These were supplemented with published C IV intensity and O VI column density measurements. Our estimate of the thermal pressure in …
Filaments are key for star formation models. As part of the study carried out by the Herschel GCC Programme, here we study the filament properties presented in GCC.VII in context with theoretical models of filament formation and evolution. A conservative sample of filaments at a distance D<500pc was extracted with the Getfilaments algorithm. Their physical structure was quantified according to two main components: the central (Gaussian) region (core component), and the power-law like region dominating the filament column density profile at larger radii (wing component). The properties and beha…
We estimate the detectability of X-ray metal-line emission from the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies over a large halo mass range ($\mathrm{M}_{\mathrm{200c}} = 10^{11.5}$-$10^{14.5}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) using the EAGLE simulations. With the XRISM Resolve instrument, a few bright (K-$α$ or Fe L-shell) lines from $\mathrm{M}_{\mathrm{200c}} \gtrsim 10^{13}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ haloes should be detectable. Using the Athena X-IFU or the Lynx Main Array, emission lines (especially from O VIII and O VII) from the inner CGM of $\mathrm{M}_{\mathrm{200c}} \gtrsim10^{12.5}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$…
We study the intrinsic large-scale distribution and evolution of seven ionized metals in the IllustrisTNG magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological simulation. We focus on the fractions of C\,\textsc{ii}, C\,\textsc{iv}, Mg\,\textsc{ii}, N\,\textsc{v}, Ne\,\textsc{viii}, O\,\textsc{vi}, and Si\,\textsc{iv} in different cosmic web structures (filaments, haloes, and voids) and gas phases (warm-hot intergalactic medium WHIM, hot, diffuse, and condensed gas) from $z=6$ to $z=0$. Our analysis provides a new perspective to the study of the distribution and evolution of baryons across cosmic time while off…
We present the multi-epoch monitoring with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton of NGC 1358, a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy whose properties made it a promising candidate X-ray changing look AGN, i.e., a source whose column density could transition from its 2017 Compton-thick (CT-, having line-of-sight Hydrogen column density NH,los>10^24 cm^-2) state to a Compton-thin (NH,los<10^24 cm^-2) one. The multi-epoch X-ray monitoring confirmed the presence of significant NH,los variability over time-scales as short as weeks, and allowed us to confirm the "changing look" nature of NGC 1358, which has most recently been o…
Molecular line emission from protoplanetary disks is a powerful tool to constrain their physical and chemical structure. Nevertheless, only a few molecules have been detected in disks so far. We take advantage of the enhanced capabilities of the IRAM 30m telescope by using the new broad band correlator (FTS) to search for so far undetected molecules in the protoplanetary disks surrounding the TTauri stars DM Tau, GO Tau, LkCa 15 and the Herbig Ae star MWC 480. We report the first detection of HC3N at 5 sigma in the GO Tau and MWC 480 disks with the IRAM 30-m, and in the LkCa 15 disk (5 sigma),…
(Abridged) A large fraction of the gas in galactic haloes has temperatures between 10^4.5 and 10^7 K. At these temperatures, cooling is dominated by metal-line emission if the metallicity Z>~0.1 Zsun. We explore the detectability of several lines using large cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations. We stack surface brightness maps centred on galaxies to calculate the expected mean surface brightness profiles for different halo masses. Assuming a detection limit of 10^-1 photon s^-1 cm^-2 sr^-1, proposed X-ray telescopes can detect O VIII emission from z=0.125 out to 80% of the virial radius (…
We present a new strategy for fitting the structure and kinematics of the HI in edge-on galaxies using a fit to the terminal-velocity channel maps of a HI data cube. The strategy can deal with self-absorbing HI gas and the presence of warps. The method is first tested on a series of models. We demonstrate that fitting optically thin models to real galaxies will lead to an overestimation of the thickness and velocity dispersion, and to a serious underestimation of the HI face-on column densities. We subsequently fit both self-absorption and optically thin models to the HI data of six edge-on ga…
We introduce a series of 20 cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Lstar (M_200 =10^11.7 - 10^12.3 Msol) and group-sized (M_200 = 10^12.7 - 10^13.3 Msol) haloes run with the model used for the EAGLE project, which additionally includes a non-equilibrium ionization and cooling module that follows 136 ions. The simulations reproduce the observed correlation, revealed by COS-Halos at z~0.2, between O VI column density at impact parameters b < 150 kpc and the specific star formation rate (sSFR=SFR/Mstar) of the central galaxy at z~0.2. We find that the column density of circumgalactic O VI is …
Proto-galaxies forming in low-mass dark matter haloes are thought to provide the majority of ionizing photons needed to reionize the Universe, due to their high escape fractions of ionizing photons. We study how the escape fraction in high-redshift galaxies relates to the physical properties of the halo in which the galaxies form, by computing escape fractions in more than 75000 haloes between redshifts 27 and 6 that were extracted from the First Billion Years project, high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamics simulations of galaxy formation. We find that the main constraint on the escape fra…

Absorption line studies are essential to understanding the origin, nature, and impact of starburst-driven galactic outflows. Such studies have revealed a multiphase medium with a number of poorly-understood features leading to a need to study the ionization mechanism of this gas. To better interpret these observations, we make use of a suite of adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamic simulations of cold, atomic clouds driven by hot, supersonic outflows, including the effect of radiative cooling, thermal conduction, and an ionizing background characteristic of a starbursting galaxy. Using a new a…
In this article, we test the conclusion of Donato et al. (2009) concerning the universality of the DM halo surface density $μ_{0D}=ρ_0r_0$. According to our study, the dispersion of values of $μ_{0D}$ is twice higher than that found by Donato et al. (2009). We conclude, in contrast with Donato et al. (2009), that the DM surface density and its Newtonian acceleration are not constant but correlate with the luminosity, morphological type, $(B-V)_0$ colour index, and the content of neutral hydrogen. These DM parameters are higher for more luminous systems of early types with red colour and low ga…
We consider evolution of metal-enriched gas exposed to a superposition of time-dependent radiation field of a nearby starburst galaxy and nearly invariant (on timescales 100 Myr) extragalactic ionization background. Within nonequilibrium (time-dependent) photoionization models we determine ionization fraction of the OVI ion commonly observed in galactic circumference. We derive then conditions for OVI to appear in absorptions in extended galactic haloes depending on the galactic mass and star formation rate. We have found that the maximum OVI fraction can reach $\sim 0.4-0.9$ under combined ac…
The association of filaments with protostellar objects has made these structures a priority target in star formation studies. The datasets of the Herschel Galactic Cold Cores Key Programme allow for a statistical study of filaments with a wide range of intrinsic and environmental characteristics. Characterisation of this sample can be used to identify key physical parameters and quantify the role of environment in the formation of supercritical filaments. Filaments were extracted from fields at D<500pc with the getfilaments algorithm and characterised according to their column density profiles…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM), i.e. the gaseous haloes around galaxies, is both the reservoir of gas that fuels galaxy growth and the repository of gas expelled by galactic winds. Most cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations focus their computational effort on the galaxies themselves and treat the CGM more coarsely, which means small-scale structure cannot be resolved. We get around this issue by running zoom-in simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy with standard mass refinement and additional uniform spatial refinement within the virial radius. This results in a detailed view of its gaseo…
We explore the circumgalactic metal content traced by commonly observed low ion absorbers, including C II, Si II, Si III, Si IV, and Mg II. We use a set of cosmological hydrodynamical zoom simulations run with the EAGLE model and including a non-equilibrium ionization and cooling module that follows 136 ions. The simulations of z~0.2 L* (M_200=10^11.7-10^12.3 Msol) haloes hosting star-forming galaxies and group-sized (M_200=10^12.7-10^13.3 Msol) haloes hosting mainly passive galaxies reproduce key trends observed by the COS-Halos survey-- low ion column densities show 1) little dependence on g…
Today, the majority of the cosmic baryons in the Universe are not observed directly, leading to an issue of "missing baryons" at low redshift. Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have indicated that a significant portion of them will be converted into the so-called Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), with gas temperature ranging between 10$^5$-10$^7$K. While the cooler phase of this gas has been observed using O VI and Ne VIII absorbers at UV wavelengths, the hotter fraction detection relies mostly on observations of O VII and O VIII at X-ray wavelengths. Here, we target the forbidden li…
Using reconstructed initial conditions in the SDSS survey volume, we carry out constrained hydrodynamic simulations in three regions representing different types of the cosmic web: the Coma cluster of galaxies; the SDSS great wall; and a large low-density region at $z\sim 0.05$. These simulations, which include star formation and stellar feedback but no AGN formation and feedback, are used to investigate the properties and evolution of intergalactic and intra-cluster media. About half of the warm-hot intergalactic gas is associated with filaments in the local cosmic web. Gas in the outskirts o…
Fast radio bursts offer the opportunity to place new constraints on the mass and density profile of hot and ionized gas in galactic haloes. We test here the X-ray emission and dispersion measure predicted by different gas profiles for the halo of the Milky Way. We examine a range of models, including entropy stability conditions and external pressure continuity. We find that incorporating constraints from X-ray observations leads to favouring dispersion measures on the lower end of the range given by these models. We show that the dispersion measure of the Milky Way halo could be less than 10 …
We investigate the properties of Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) using high-resolution and large box-size cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of a LambdaCDM model. The numerical code used is a modification of GADGET-2 with a self consistent implementation of the metal enrichment mechanism (Tornatore et al. 2007). We explore the numerical convergence of some relevant physical quantities and we vary the parameters describing the properties of galactic winds; the initial stellar mass function; the linear dark matter power spectrum and the metal enrichment pattern of the IGM (Intergalactic M…
Galaxies are surrounded by massive gas reservoirs (i.e. the circumgalactic medium; CGM) which play a key role in their evolution. The properties of the CGM, which are dependent on a variety of internal and environmental factors, are often inferred from absorption line surveys which rely on a limited number of single lines-of-sight. In this work we present an analysis of 28 galaxy haloes selected from the Auriga project, a cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical zoom-in simulation suite of isolated Milky Way-mass galaxies, to understand the impact of CGM diversity on observational studies. Although…
High redshift quasars at z>6 have masses up to ~$10^9$ M$_\odot$. One of the pathways to their formation includes direct collapse of gas, forming a supermassive star, precursor of the black hole seed. The conditions for direct collapse are more easily achievable in metal-free haloes, where atomic hydrogen cooling operates and molecular hydrogen (H2) formation is inhibited by a strong external UV flux. Above a certain value of UV flux (J_crit), the gas in a halo collapses isothermally at ~$10^4$ K and provides the conditions for supermassive star formation. However, H2 can self-shield, reducing…
We compare simulations, including the Illustris simulations, to observations of CIV and CII absorption at z=2-4. These are the CIV column density distribution function in the column density range $10^{12} - 10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$, the CIV equivalent width distribution at 0.1 - 2 Å, and the covering fractions and equivalent widths of CIV 1548 and CII 1337 around DLAs. In the context of the feedback models we investigate, all CIV observations favour the use of more energetic wind models, which are better able to enrich the gas surrounding halos. We propose two ways to achieve this; an increased wind…

We analyze circumgalactic medium (CGM) in a suite of high-resolution cosmological re-simulations of a Milky-Way size galaxy and show that CGM properties are quite sensitive to details of star formation--feedback loop modelling. The simulation that produces a realistic late-type galaxy, fails to reproduce existing observations of the CGM. In contrast, simulation that does not produce a realistic galaxy has the predicted CGM in better agreement with observations. This illustrates that properties of galaxies and properties of their CGM provide strong ${\it complementary}$ constraints on the proce…

Hyperluminous quasars ($L_{\rm bol}\gtrsim 10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$) are ideal laboratories to study the interaction and impact of extreme radiative field and the most powerful winds in the AGN nuclear regions. They typically exhibit low coronal X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$) compared to the UV and MIR radiative outputs ($L_{\rm UV}$ and $L_{\rm MIR}$) with a non-negligible fraction of them reporting even $\sim$1 dex weaker $L_{\rm X}$ compared to the prediction of the well established $L_{\rm X}$-$L_{\rm UV}$ and $L_{\rm X}$-$L_{\rm MIR}$ relations followed by the bulk of the AGN population. We …
High-mass stars are formed within massive molecular clumps, where a large number of stars form close together. The evolution of the clumps with different masses and luminosities is mainly regulated by its high-mass stellar content and the formation of such objects is still not well understood. In this work, we characterise the mid-J CO emission in a statistical sample of 99 clumps (Top100) selected from the ATLASGAL survey that are representative of the Galactic proto-cluster population. High-spatial resolution APEX-CHAMP+ maps of the CO(6-5) and CO(7-6) transitions were obtained and combined …
The hot gas in galaxy halos may account for a significant fraction of missing baryons in galaxies, and some of these gases can be traced by high ionization absorption systems in QSO UV spectra. Using high S/N ratio $ HST$/COS spectra, we discovered a high ionization state system at $z=1.1912$ in the sightline toward \object{LBQS 1435-0134}, and two-components absorption lines are matched for Mg X, Ne VIII, Ne VI, O VI, Ne V, O V, Ne IV, O IV, N IV, O III, and H I. Mg X, detected for the first time ($5.8 σ$), is a particularly direct tracer of hot galactic halos, as its peak ion fraction occurs…
Using the GAEA semi-analytic model, we analyse the connection between Damped Lyman-$α$ systems (DLAs) and HI in galaxies. Our state-of-the-art semi-analytic model is tuned to reproduce the local galaxy HI mass function, and that also reproduces other important galaxy properties, including the galaxy mass - gas metallicity relation. To produce catalogs of simulated DLAs we throw $10^5$ random lines of sight in a composite simulated volume: dark matter haloes with log$(\frac{M_{200}}{ M_{\odot}}) \geq 11.5$ are extracted from the Millennium Simulation, while for $9.2 \leq \log(\frac{M_{200}}{ M_…
We analyse the distribution and origin of OVI in the Circumgalactic Medium (CGM) of dark-matter haloes of $\sim 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ at $z\sim1$ in the VELA cosmological zoom-in simulations. We find that the OVI in the inflowing cold streams is primarily photoionized, while in the bulk volume it is primarily collisionally ionized. The photoionized component dominates the observed column density at large impact parameters ($\gtrsim 0.3 R_{\rm vir}$), while the collisionally ionized component dominates closer in. We find that most of the collisional OVI, by mass, resides in the relatively thin bou…
A new class of models of stellar discs is introduced and used to build a self-consistent model of our Galaxy. The model is defined by the parameters that specify the action-based distribution functions (DFs) f(J) of four stellar discs (three thin-disc age cohorts and a thick disc), spheroidal bulge and spheroidal stellar and dark haloes. From these DFs plus a specified distribution of gas, we solve for the densities of stars and dark matter and the potential they generate. The principal observational constraints are the kinematics of stars with Gaia RVS data and the density of stars in the col…

Feedback is indispensable in galaxy formation. However, lacking resolutions, cosmological simulations often use ad hoc feedback parameters. Conversely, small-box simulations, while better resolving the feedback, cannot capture gas evolution beyond the simulation domain. We aim to bridge the gap by implementing small-box results of supernovae-driven outflows into dark matter halo-scale simulations and studying their impact on large scales. Galactic outflows are multiphase, but small-box simulations show that the hot phase (T$\approx$ 10$^{6-7}$ K) carries the majority of energy and metals. We i…
