We study the intrinsic large-scale distribution and evolution of seven ionized metals in the IllustrisTNG magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological simulation. We focus on the fractions of C\,\textsc{ii}, C\,\textsc{iv}, Mg\,\textsc{ii}, N\,\textsc{v}, Ne\,\textsc{viii}, O\,\textsc{vi}, and Si\,\textsc{iv} in different cosmic web structures (filaments, haloes, and voids) and gas phases (warm-hot intergalactic medium WHIM, hot, diffuse, and condensed gas) from $z=6$ to $z=0$. Our analysis provides a new perspective to the study of the distribution and evolution of baryons across cosmic time while offering new hints in the context of the well-known missing baryons problem. The cosmic web components are here identified using the local comoving dark matter density, which provides a simple but effective way of mapping baryons on large scales. Our results show that C\,\textsc{ii} and Mg\,\textsc{ii} are mostly located in condensed gas inside haloes in high-density and low-temperature star-forming regions ($ρ_{\rm gas}/\barρ_{\rm bar}\gtrsim10^3$, and ${\rm T}\lesssim10^{5}$~K). C\,\textsc{iv} and Si\,\textsc{iv} present similar evolution of their mass fractions in haloes and filaments across cosmic time. In particular, their mass budgets in haloes in condensed phase ($ρ_{\rm gas}/\barρ_{\rm bar}\gtrsim10^3$, and ${\rm T}\lesssim10^{5}$~K) are driven by gas cooling and star formation with a peak at $z\sim2$. Finally, our results confirm that O\,\textsc{vi}, Ne\,\textsc{viii}, and N\,\textsc{v} are good tracers of warm/hot and low-density gas at low redshift ($ρ_{\rm gas}/\barρ_{\rm bar}\lesssim10^3$, and ${\rm T}\gtrsim10^{5}$~K), regions that are likely to contain most of the missing baryons in the local Universe.
We explore the abundance, spatial distribution, and physical properties of the OVI, OVII, and OVIII ions of oxygen in circumgalactic and intergalactic media (the CGM, IGM, and WHIM). We use the TNG100 and TNG300 large volume cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. Modeling the ionization states of simulated oxygen, we find good agreement with observations of the low-redshift OVI column density distribution function (CDDF), and present its evolution for all three ions from z=0 to z=4. Producing mock quasar absorption line spectral surveys, we show that the IllustrisTNG simulations are …
The distribution of metals in the intra-cluster medium encodes important information about the enrichment history and formation of galaxy clusters. Here we explore the metal content of clusters in IllustrisTNG - a new suite of galaxy formation simulations building on the Illustris project. Our cluster sample contains 20 objects in TNG100 - a ~(100 Mpc)^3 volume simulation with 2x1820^3 resolution elements, and 370 objects in TNG300 - a ~(300 Mpc)^3 volume simulation with 2x2500^3 resolution elements. The z=0 metallicity profiles agree with observations, and the enrichment history is consistent…
The coevolution of galaxies and their metal content serves as an important test for galaxy feedback models. We analyze the distribution and evolution of metals within the IllustrisTNG simulation suite with a focus on the gas-phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR). We find that the IllustrisTNG model broadly reproduces the slope and normalization evolution of the MZR across the redshift range $0<z<2$ and mass range $10^9 < M_*/\mathrm{M}_\odot < 10^{10.5}$. We make predictions for the high redshift ($2<z<10$) metal content of galaxies which is described by a gradual decline in the normalization …
Massive stars are thought to be progenitors of Long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), most likely with a bias favouring low metallicity progenitors. Because galaxies do not have a constant metallicity throughout, the combination of line-of-sight absorption metallicity inferred from GRB afterglow spectroscopy and of host galaxy global metallicity derived from emission lines diagnostics represents a powerful way to probe both the bias function for GRB progenitors, and the chemical inhomogeneities across star forming regions. In this study, we predict the relationship between Zabs and Zem using three diff…

We use the IllustrisTNG simulations to investigate the evolution of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for star-forming cluster galaxies as a function of the formation history of their cluster host. The simulations predict an enhancement in the gas-phase metallicities of star-forming cluster galaxies (10^9< M_star<10^10 M_sun) at z<1.0 in comparisons to field galaxies. This is qualitatively consistent with observations. We find that the metallicity enhancement of cluster galaxies appears prior to their infall into the central cluster potential, indicating for the first time a systematic "chem…
Understanding the relationship between the cosmic web and the gas content of galaxies is a key step towards understanding galaxy evolution. However, the impact of the cosmic web on the growth of galaxies and dark matter halos is not yet properly understood. We report a detection of the effect of the cosmic web on the galaxy stellar mass - gas phase metallicity relation of low redshift star-forming galaxies, using SDSS data. The proximity of a galaxy to a node, independently of stellar mass and overdensity, influences its gas-phase metallicity, with galaxies closer to nodes displaying higher ch…
We present radial gas-phase metallicity profiles, gradients, and break radii at redshift $z = 0 - 3$ from the TNG50-1 star-forming galaxy population. These metallicity profiles are characterized by an emphasis on identifying the steep inner gradient and flat outer gradient. From this, the break radius, $r_{\rm Break}$, is defined as the region where the transition occurs. We observe the break radius having a positive trend with mass that weakens with redshift. When normalized by the stellar half-mass radius, the break radius has a weaker relation with both mass and redshift. To test if our res…
The distribution of elements in galaxies provides a wealth of information about their production sites and their subsequent mixing into the interstellar medium. Here we investigate the distribution of elements within stars in the IllustrisTNG simulations. In particular, we analyze the abundance ratios of magnesium and europium in Milky Way-like galaxies from the TNG100 simulation (stellar masses ${\log} (M_\star / {\rm M}_\odot) \sim 9.7 - 11.2$). As abundances of magnesium and europium for individual stars in the Milky Way are observed across a variety of spatial locations and metallicities, …
We study the distribution and evolution of highly ionised intergalactic metals in the Evolution and Assembly of Galaxies and their Environment (EAGLE) cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations. EAGLE has been shown to reproduce a wide range of galaxy properties while its subgrid feedback was calibrated without considering gas properties. We compare the predictions for the column density distribution functions (CDDFs) and cosmic densities of SiIV, CIV, NV, OVI and NeVIII absorbers with observations at redshift z = 0 to ~ 6 and find reasonable agreement, although there are some differences. We sh…
We introduce an updated physical model to simulate the formation and evolution of galaxies in cosmological, large-scale gravity+magnetohydrodynamical simulations with the moving mesh code AREPO. The overall framework builds upon the successes of the Illustris galaxy formation model, and includes prescriptions for star formation, stellar evolution, chemical enrichment, primordial and metal-line cooling of the gas, stellar feedback with galactic outflows, and black hole formation, growth and multi-mode feedback. In this paper we give a comprehensive description of the physical and numerical adva…
The low Galactic halo is enveloped by a sheath of ionized, low-metallicity gas, which can provide a substantial (1 M_sun/yr) cooling inflow to replenish star formation in the disk. Using absorption spectra from the HST and FUSE toward 37 active galactic nuclei at high latitude, we detect widespread interstellar SiIII 1206.5 absorption: 61 high-velocity clouds (HVCs) along 30 sight lines and 22 intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs) along 20 sight lines. We find a segregation of redshifted and blueshifted absorbers across the Galactic rotation axis at l=180, consistent with a lag in the rotation v…
We model dust evolution in Milky Way-like galaxies by post-processing the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulations in order to predict dust-to-gas ratios and grain size distributions. We treat grain-size-dependent dust growth and destruction processes using a 64-bin discrete grain size evolution model without spatially resolving each galaxy. Our model broadly reproduces the observed dust--metallicity scaling relation in nearby galaxies. The grain size distribution is dominated by large grains at $z\gtrsim 3$ and the small-grain abundance rapidly increases by shattering and accretio…
Estimates of gas-phase abundances based on strong-line methods have been calibrated for H~{\scshape ii} regions. Those methods ignore any contribution from the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), which shows enhanced collisional-to-recombination line ratios in comparison to H~{\scshape ii} regions of the same metallicity. Applying strong line methods whilst ignoring the role of the DIG thus systematically overestimates metallicities. Using integral field spectroscopy data, we show how to correct for the DIG contribution and how it biases the mass--metallicity--star formation rate relation.
We study the tidal evolution of galaxies in the most massive cluster of the IllustrisTNG-100 simulation. For the purpose of this work we select 112 galaxies with the largest stellar masses at present and follow their properties in time. Using their orbital history we divide the sample into unevolved (infalling), weakly evolved (with one pericenter passage) and strongly evolved (with multiple pericenters). The samples are clearly separated by the value of the integrated tidal force from the cluster the galaxies experienced during their entire evolution and their properties depend strongly on th…
Hot gaseous atmospheres that permeate galaxies and extend far beyond their stellar distribution, where they are commonly referred to as the circumgalactic medium (CGM), imprint important information about feedback processes powered by the stellar populations of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes (SMBH). In this work we study the properties of this hot X-ray emitting medium using the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations. We analyse their mock X-ray spectra, obtained from the diffuse and metal-enriched gas in TNG100 and TNG50, and compare the results with X-ray observations of …
The galaxy Malin 1 contains the largest stellar disk known but the formation mechanism of this structure has been elusive. In this paper, we report a Malin 1 analogue in the 100 Mpc IllustrisTNG simulation and describe its formation history. At redshift zero, this massive galaxy, having a maximum circular velocity $V_{\rm max}$ of 430 ${\rm km\ s^{-1}}$, contains a 100 kpc gas/stellar disk with morphology similar to Malin 1. The simulated galaxy reproduces well many observed features of Malin 1's vast disk, including its stellar ages, metallicities, and gas rotation curve. We trace the extende…
We present a systematic study of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in M83 and its effects on the measurement of metallicity gradients at varying resolution scales. Using spectrophotometric data cubes of M83 obtained at the 2.5m duPont telescope at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the TYPHOON program, we separate the HII regions from the DIG using the [SII]/H$α$ ratio, HIIphot (HII finding algorithm) and the H$α$ surface brightness. We find that the contribution to the overall H$α$ luminosity is approximately equal for the HII and DIG regions. The data is then rebinned to simulate low-resolution…
We carry out a comparative analysis of the metallicities from the stellar, neutral-gas, and ionized-gas components in the metal-rich spiral galaxy M83. We analyze spectroscopic observations taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detect a clear depletion of the HI gas, as observed from the HI column densities in the nuclear region of this spiral galaxy. We find column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $<$ 20.0 at galactocentric distances of $<$ 0.18 kpc, in contrast to column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $…
We report on a systematic investigation of the cold and mildly ionized gaseous baryonic metal components of our Galaxy, through the analysis of high resolution Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra of two samples of Galactic and extragalactic sources. The comparison between lines of sight towards sources located in the disk of our Galaxy and extragalactic sources, allows us for the first time to clearly distinguish between gaseous metal components in the disk and halo of our Galaxy. We find that a Warm Ionized Metal Medium (WIMM) permeates a large volume above and below the Galaxy's disk, perhaps up …
To understand how the evolution of grain size distribution in galaxies affects observed dust properties, we apply a post-processing dust evolution model to galaxy merger trees from the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. Our dust model includes stellar dust production, sputtering in hot gas, dust growth by accretion and coagulation in the dense interstellar medium (ISM), and shattering in the diffuse ISM. We decompose the grain size distribution into different dust species depending on the elemental abundances and the dense ISM fraction given by the simulation. In our previous…
We use high quality VLT/MUSE data to study the kinematics and the ionized gas properties of Haro 11, a well known starburst merger system and the closest confirmed Lyman continuum leaking galaxy. We present results from integrated line maps, and from maps in three velocity bins comprising the blueshifted, systemic and redshifted emission. The kinematic analysis reveals complex velocities resulting from the interplay of virial motions and momentum feedback. Star formation happens intensively in three compact knots (knots A, B and C), but one, knot C, dominates the energy released in supernovae.…
We study the structural evolution of isolated star-forming galaxies in the Illustris TNG100-1 hydrodynamical simulation, with a focus on investigating the growth of the central core density within 2 kpc ($Σ_{*,2kpc}$) in relation to total stellar mass ($M_*$) at z < 0.5. First, we show that several observational trends in the $Σ_{*,2kpc}$-$M_*$ plane are qualitatively reproduced in IllustrisTNG, including the distributions of AGN, star forming galaxies, quiescent galaxies, and radial profiles of stellar age, sSFR, and metallicity. We find that galaxies with dense cores evolve parallel to the $…
We present direct measures of the ionization fractions of several sulfur ions in the Galactic warm ionized medium (WIM). We obtained high resolution ultraviolet absorption line spectroscopy of post-asymptotic giant branch stars in the the globular clusters Messier 3 [(l,b)=(42.2, +78.7); d=10.2 kpc, z=10.0 kpc] and Messier 5 [(l,b)=(3.9, +46.8); d=7.5 kpc, z = +5.3 kpc] with the Hubble Space Telescope and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer to measure, or place limits on, the column densities of S I, S II, S III, S IV, S VI, and H I. These clusters also house millisecond pulsars, whose disp…
Galaxy metallicity scaling relations provide a powerful tool for understanding galaxy evolution, but obtaining unbiased global galaxy gas-phase oxygen abundances requires proper treatment of the various line-emitting sources within spectroscopic apertures. We present a model framework that treats galaxies as ensembles of HII and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) regions of varying metallicities. These models are based upon empirical relations between line ratios and electron temperature for HII regions, and DIG strong-line ratio relations from SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU data. Flux-weighting effects and DIG con…
We explore implications of a range of black hole (BH) seeding prescriptions on the formation of the brightest $z\gtrsim6$ quasars in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The underlying galaxy formation model is the same as in IllustrisTNG. Using constrained initial conditions, we study the growth of BHs in rare overdense regions (forming $\gtrsim10^{12}M_{\odot}/h$ halos by $z=7$) using a $(9~\mathrm{Mpc}/h)^3$ simulated volume. BH growth is maximal within halos that are compact and have a low tidal field. For these halos, we consider an array of gas-based seeding prescriptions wherein $M_{\…
Here we report the first spatially resolved spectroscopic study for the galaxy PHL293B using the high-resolution GTC/MEGARA IFU. PHL293B is a local, extremely metal-poor, high ionization galaxy. This makes PHL 293B an excellent analogue for galaxies in the early Universe. The MEGARA aperture (~12.5''x 11.3'') covers the entire PHL 293B main body and its far-reaching ionized gas. We created and discussed maps of all relevant emission lines, line ratios and physical-chemical properties of the ionized ISM. The narrow emission gas appears to be ionized mainly by massive stars according to the obse…

The Velocity Map Asymmetry of Ionized Gas in MaNGA II. Correlation between Velocity Map Morphology, Star Formation, and Metallicity in Regular Disk Galaxies
We present spectra of 14 A-type supergiants in the metal-rich spiral galaxy M83. We derive stellar parameters and metallicities, and measure a spectroscopic distance modulus m-M = 28.47 +\- 0.10 (4.9 +\- 0.2 Mpc), in agreement with other methods. We use the stellar characteristic metallicity of M83 and other systems to discuss a version of the galaxy mass-metallicity relation that is independent of the analysis of nebular emission lines and the associated systematic uncertainties. We reproduce the radial metallicity gradient of M83, which flattens at large radii, with a chemical evolution mode…
Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) is prevalent in star-forming galaxies. Using a sample of 365 nearly face-on star-forming galaxies observed by MaNGA, we demonstrate how DIG in star-forming galaxies impacts the measurements of emission line ratios, hence the interpretation of diagnostic diagrams and gas-phase metallicity measurements. At fixed metallicity, DIG-dominated low Hα surface brightness regions display enhanced [SII]/Hα, [NII]/Hα, [OII]/Hβ, and [OI]/Hα. The gradients in these line ratios are determined by metallicity gradients and Hα surface brightness. In line ratio diagnostic diagrams, cont…
We present the first comparison of observed stellar continuum spectra of high-redshift galaxies and mock galaxy spectra generated from hydrodynamical simulations. The mock spectra are produced from the IllustrisTNG TNG100 simulation combined with stellar population models and take into account dust attenuation and realistic observational effects (aperture effects and noise). We compare the simulated $D_n4000$ and EW(H$δ$) of galaxies with $10.5 \leq \log(M_\ast/M_\odot) \leq 11.5$ at $0.6 \leq z \leq 1.0$ to the observed distributions from the LEGA-C survey. TNG100 globally reproduces the obse…
A significant fraction of nearby late-type galaxies are lopsided. We study the asymmetry of the stellar component in a sample of well-resolved disky galaxies selected from the last snapshot of the Illustris TNG100 simulation based on their flatness and rotational support. Among 1912 disks, we identify 161 objects with significant asymmetry in terms of the m=1 Fourier mode of the stellar component within (1-2) stellar half-mass radii and describe their properties using three representative examples. The profiles of the m=1 mode typically increase with radius, and the corresponding phase is cons…

We present the first results from our KODIAQ Z survey aimed to determine the metallicity distribution and physical properties of the z>2 partial and full Lyman limit systems (pLLSs and LLSs; 16.2<log N(HI)<19), which are probed of the interface regions between the intergalactic medium (IGM) and galaxies. We study 31 HI-selected pLLSs and LLSs at 2.3<z<3.3 observed with Keck/HIRES in absorption against background QSOs. We compare the column densities of metal-ions to HI and use photoionization models to assess the metallicity. The metallicity distribution of the pLLSs/LLSs at 2.3<z<3.3 is consi…

We present a comparison of the physical properties of the ionized gas in the circumgalactic (CGM) and intergalactic (IGM) media at $z\sim0$ between observations and four cosmological hydrodynamical simulations: Illustris, TNG300 of the IllustrisTNG project, EAGLE, and one of the Magneticum simulations. For the observational data, we use the gas properties that are inferred from cross-correlating the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) from the {\it Planck} CMB maps with the haloes and the large-scale structure reconstructed from Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. Both the observational and simulation …
We assess the metal content of the cool (10^4 K) circumgalactic medium (CGM) about galaxies at z<1 using an H I-selected sample of 28 Lyman limit systems (LLS, defined here as absorbers with 16.2<log N(H I)<18.5) observed in absorption against background QSOs by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. The N(H I) selection avoids metallicity biases inherent in many previous studies of the low-redshift CGM. We compare the column densities of weakly ionized metal species (e.g., O II, Si II, Mg II) to N(H I) in the strongest H I component of each absorber. We find that…
The high-velocity cloud (HVC) Complex A is a probe of the physical conditions in the Galactic halo. The kinematics, morphology, distance, and metallicity of Complex A indicate that it represents new material that is accreting onto the Galaxy. We present Wisconsin H-alpha Mapper (WHAM) kinematically resolved observations of Complex A over the velocity range of -250 to -50 km/s in the local standard of rest reference frame. These observations include the first full H-alpha intensity map of Complex A across (l, b) = (124, 18) to (171, 53) and deep targeted observations in H-alpha, [S II]6716, [N …
We investigate the impact of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) on abundance determinations in star-forming (SF) galaxies. The DIG is characterised using the H$α$ equivalent width ($W_{\text{H}α}$). From a set of 1,409 SF galaxies from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey, we calculate the fractional contribution of the DIG to several emission lines using high-$S/N$ data from SF spaxels (instead of using noisy emission-lines in DIG-dominated spaxels). Our method is applicable to spectra with observed $W_{\text{H}α} \gtrsim 10$ angstroms (which are not dominated by DIG emission). Since …
Feedback from massive stars shapes the ISM and affects the evolution of galaxies, but its mechanisms acting at the small scales ($\sim 10$ pc) are still not well constrained observationally, especially in the low-metallicity environments. We present the analysis of the ionized gas (focusing on its kinematics, which were never studied before), and its connection to the massive stars in the nearby ($D \sim 1.4$ Mpc) star-forming very metal-poor ($Z\sim 0.07 Z_\odot$) galaxy Sextans A. The analysis is based on the observations with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, long-slit spectroscopy and…
We present a new method for inferring the metallicity (Z) and ionization parameter (q) of HII regions and star-forming galaxies using strong nebular emission lines (SEL). We use Bayesian inference to derive the joint and marginalized posterior probability density functions for Z and q given a set of observed line fluxes and an input photo-ionization model. Our approach allows the use of arbitrary sets of SELs and the inclusion of flux upper limits. The method provides a self-consistent way of determining the physical conditions of ionized nebulae that is not tied to the arbitrary choice of a p…
Aims: We systematically explore a plausible subset of the parameter space involving effective temperatures and metallicities of the ionizing stellar sources, the effects of the hardening of their radiation by surrounding leaky HII regions with different escape fractions, as well as different scenarios for the clumpiness of the DIG, and compute the resulting line strength ratios for a number of diagnostic optical emission lines. Methods: For the ionizing fluxes we compute a grid of stellar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from detailed, fully non-LTE model atmospheres that include the effec…
