Galaxy metallicity scaling relations provide a powerful tool for understanding galaxy evolution, but obtaining unbiased global galaxy gas-phase oxygen abundances requires proper treatment of the various line-emitting sources within spectroscopic apertures. We present a model framework that treats galaxies as ensembles of HII and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) regions of varying metallicities. These models are based upon empirical relations between line ratios and electron temperature for HII regions, and DIG strong-line ratio relations from SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU data. Flux-weighting effects and DIG contamination can significantly affect properties inferred from global galaxy spectra, biasing metallicity estimates by more than 0.3 dex in some cases. We use observationally-motivated inputs to construct a model matched to typical local star-forming galaxies, and quantify the biases in strong-line ratios, electron temperatures, and direct-method metallicities as inferred from global galaxy spectra relative to the median values of the HII region distributions in each galaxy. We also provide a generalized set of models that can be applied to individual galaxies or galaxy samples in atypical regions of parameter space. We use these models to correct for the effects of flux-weighting and DIG contamination in the local direct-method mass-metallicity and fundamental metallicity relations, and in the mass-metallicity relation based on strong-line metallicities. Future photoionization models of galaxy line emission need to include DIG emission and represent galaxies as ensembles of emitting regions with varying metallicity, instead of as single HII regions with effective properties, in order to obtain unbiased estimates of key underlying physical properties.
We explore the so-called softness diagram -- whose main function is to provide the hardness of the ionizing radiation in star-forming regions -- in order to check whether hot and old low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) are significant contributors to the ionization within star-forming regions, as suggested by previous MaNGA data analyses. We used the code HCm-Teff to derive both the ionization parameter and the equivalent effective temperature (T*), adopting models of massive stars and planetary nebulae (PNe), and exploring different sets of emission lines in the softness diagram to figure out the…
We combine state-of-the-art models for the production of stellar radiation and its transfer through the interstellar medium (ISM) to investigate ultraviolet-line diagnostics of stars, the ionized and the neutral ISM in star-forming galaxies. We start by assessing the reliability of our stellar population synthesis modelling by fitting absorption-line indices in the ISM-free ultraviolet spectra of 10 Large-Magellanic-Cloud clusters. In doing so, we find that neglecting stochastic sampling of the stellar initial mass function in these young ($\sim10$-100 Myr), low-mass clusters affects negligibl…
We present results from integral field spectroscopy with PMAS. The observed field contains: five protoplanetary discs (also known as proplyds), the high-velocity jet HH 514 and a bowshock. Spatial distribution maps are obtained for different emission line fluxes, the c(Hβ) coefficient, electron densities and temperatures, ionic abundances of different ions from collisionally excited lines (CELs), C2+ and O2+ abundances from recombination lines (RLs) and the abundance discrepancy factor of O2+, ADF(O2+). We find that collisional de-excitation has a major influence on the line fluxes in the prop…
Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) is prevalent in star-forming galaxies. Using a sample of 365 nearly face-on star-forming galaxies observed by MaNGA, we demonstrate how DIG in star-forming galaxies impacts the measurements of emission line ratios, hence the interpretation of diagnostic diagrams and gas-phase metallicity measurements. At fixed metallicity, DIG-dominated low Hα surface brightness regions display enhanced [SII]/Hα, [NII]/Hα, [OII]/Hβ, and [OI]/Hα. The gradients in these line ratios are determined by metallicity gradients and Hα surface brightness. In line ratio diagnostic diagrams, cont…
We present deep Keck/MOSFIRE $H$-band spectroscopic observations covering the [CIII],CIII]$λ\lambda1907,1909$ doublet for three $z\sim8$ galaxy candidates in the AEGIS field. Along with non-detections in two galaxies, we obtain one of the highest-redshift detections to-date of [CIII]$λ1907$ for the galaxy AEGIS-33376, finding $z_{\rm spec}=7.945\pm0.001$. We measure a [CIII]$λ$1907 flux of $2.24\pm0.71\times10^{-18} \mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1} \mbox{ cm}^{-2}$, corresponding to a rest-frame equivalent width of $20.3\pm6.5 \unicode{x212B}$ for the single line. Given the not very constraining uppe…
Helium line observations towards 11 Galactic positions using Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope(WSRT) have been reported. These observations were made towards nearby positions where already hydrogen lines were detected at sufficiently high intensity($\geq$50mK) at 1.4 GHz. This approach gave a fair chance for the detection of helium line as well, keeping in mind the relative abundance(10%) of helium with respect to hydrogen. Care was also taken to avoid the presence of HII regions along the line of sight so that the line emission originates from the extended diffuse low density ionized compo…
Using VLT/FLAMES optical IFU observations, we present a detailed study of UM 448, a nearby Blue Compact Galaxy (BCG) previously reported to have an anomalously high N/O abundance ratio. NTT/SuSI2 images reveal a morphology suggestive of a merger of two systems of contrasting colour, whilst our H-alpha emission maps resolve UM 448 into three separate regions that do not coincide with the stellar continuum peaks. UM 448 exhibits complex emission line profiles, with lines consisting of a narrow, central component, an underlying broad component and a third, narrow blue-shifted component. Radial ve…
A new class of quiescent galaxies harboring possible AGN-driven winds has been discovered using spatially resolved optical spectroscopy from the ongoing SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. These galaxies, termed "red geysers", constitute $5-10\%$ of the local quiescent population and are characterized by narrow bisymmetric patterns in ionized gas emission features. Cheung et al. argued that these galaxies host large-scale AGN-driven winds that may play a role in suppressing star formation at late times. In this work, we test the hypothesis that AGN activity is ultimately responsible for the red geyser pheno…
NebulaBayes is a new Bayesian code that implements a general method of comparing observed emission-line fluxes to photoionization model grids. The code enables us to extract robust, spatially resolved measurements of abundances in the extended narrow line regions (ENLRs) produced by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We observe near-constant ionization parameters but steeply radially-declining pressures, which together imply that radiation pressure regulates the ENLR density structure on large scales. Our sample includes four `pure Seyfert' galaxies from the S7 survey that have extensive ENLRs. NGC…
Intensity mapping provides a unique means to probe the epoch of reionization (EoR), when the neutral intergalactic medium was ionized by the energetic photons emitted from the first galaxies. The [CII] 158$μ$m fine-structure line is typically one of the brightest emission lines of star-forming galaxies and thus a promising tracer of the global EoR star-formation activity. However, [CII] intensity maps at $6 \lesssim z \lesssim 8$ are contaminated by interloping CO rotational line emission ($3 \leq J_{\rm upp} \leq 6$) from lower-redshift galaxies. Here we present a strategy to remove the foreg…
The most rapidly evolving regions of galaxies often display complex optical spectra with emission lines excited by massive stars, shocks and accretion onto supermassive black holes. Standard calibrations (such as for the star formation rate) cannot be applied to such mixed spectra. In this paper we isolate the contributions of star formation, shock excitation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity to the emission line luminosities of individual spatially resolved regions across the central 3 $\times$ 3 kpc$^2$ region of the active barred spiral galaxy NGC$\sim$613. The star formation rate …
Using integral field spectroscopic data of 24 nearby spiral galaxies obtained with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), we derive empirical calibrations to determine the metallicity of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) and/or of the low-ionisation emission region (LI(N)ER) in passive regions of galaxies. To do so, we identify a large number of HII--DIG/LIER pairs that are close enough to be chemically homogeneous and we measure the metallicity difference of each DIG/LIER region relative to its HII region companion when applying the same strong line calibrations. The O3N2 diagnostic ($=$lo…
We report the detection of extended warm ionized gas in two powerful high-redshift radio galaxies, NVSS J210626-314003 at z=2.10 and TXS 2353-003 at z=1.49, that does not appear to be associated with the radio jets. This is contrary to what would be expected from the alignment effect, a characteristic feature of distant, powerful radio galaxies at z> 0.6. The gas also has smaller velocity gradients and line widths than most other high-z radio galaxies with similar data. Both galaxies are part of a systematic study of 50 high-redshift radio galaxies with SINFONI, and are the only two that are c…
We present new and archival SOFIA FIFI-LS far-IR spectroscopic observations of 25 local galaxies of either the [OIII]52um and/or the [NIII]57um lines. Including other 31 galaxies from Herschel-PACS, we discuss a local sample of 47 galaxies, including HII region, luminous IR, low-metallicity dwarf and Seyfert galaxies. Analyzing the mid- to far-IR fine-structure lines of this sample, we assess the metallicity and compare with the optical spectroscopy estimates. Using the IR, we find a similar O/H--N/O relation to that known in the optical. As opposite, we find systematically lower N/O IR abunda…
We study the shape of the gas-phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of a combined sample of present-day dwarf and high-mass star-forming galaxies using IZI, a Bayesian formalism for measuring chemical abundances presented in Blanc et al. 2015. We observe a characteristic stellar mass scale at $M_* \simeq 10^{9.5}$M$_{\odot}$, above which the ISM undergoes a sharp increase in its level of chemical enrichment. In the $10^{6}-10^{9.5}$M$_{\odot}$ range the MZR follows a shallow power-law ($Z\propto M^α_*$) with slope $α=0.14\pm0.08$. At approaching $M_* \simeq 10^{9.5}$M$_{\odot}$ the MZR steepen…
In this paper, we investigate 2727 galaxies observed by MaNGA as of June 2016 to develop spatially resolved techniques for identifying signatures of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We identify 303 AGN candidates. The additional spatial dimension imposes challenges in identifying AGN due to contamination from diffuse ionized gas, extra-planar gas and photoionization by hot stars. We show that the combination of spatially-resolved line diagnostic diagrams and additional cuts on H$α$ surface brighness and H$α$ equivalent width can distinguish between AGN-like signatures and high-metallicity galaxie…
We took spatially resolved slit FORS2 spectra of 19 cluster galaxies at z=1.4, and 8 additional field galaxies at 1<z<1.2 using the ESO Very Large Telescope. The targets were selected from previous spectroscopic and photometric campaigns. Our spectroscopy was complemented with HST-ACS imaging in the F775W and F850LP filters, which is mandatory to derive the galaxy structural parameters accurately. We analyzed the ionized gas kinematics by extracting rotation curves from the two-dimensional spectra. Taking into account all geometrical, observational, and instrumental effects, we used these rota…
To better characterize the upper end of the galaxy stellar mass range, the MUSE Most Massive Galaxies (M3G) Survey targeted the most massive galaxies (M$>10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$) found in the densest known clusters of galaxies at $z\sim0.046$. The sample is composed by 25 early-type galaxies: 14 BCGs, of which 3 are in the densest region of the Shapley Super Cluster (SSC), and 11 massive satellites in the SSC. In this work we aim at deriving the spatial distribution and kinematics of the gas, and discussing its ionisation mechanism and origin in the optical wavelength range with MUSE data. We fit…
We present our second set of results from our mid-infrared imaging survey of Milky Way Giant HII regions. We used the FORCAST instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy to obtain 20 and 37$μ$m images of the central ~10'X10' area of M17. We investigate the small- and large-scale properties of M17 using our data in conjunction with previous multi-wavelength observations. The spectral energy distributions of individual compact sources were constructed with Spitzer-IRAC, SOFIA-FORCAST, and Herschel-PACS photometry data and fitted with massive young stellar object (MYSO) mod…
The detection of highly ionized metal absorption lines in the X-ray spectra of the Galactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) implies the distribution of hot gas along the sightline toward the background sources. However, the origin of this hot gas is still unclear: it can arise in the hot interstellar medium (ISM), or is intrinsic to the XRBs. In this paper, we present an XMM-Newton survey of the OVII absorption lines in the spectra of Galactic XRBs. A total of 33 XRBs were selected, with 29 low mass XRBs and 4 high mass XRBs. At more than 3$σ$ threshold, OVII absorption line was detected in 16 targets, …
We report the discovery of Lyman-alpha emission (Ly$α$) in the bright galaxy EGSY-2008532660 (hereafter EGSY8p7) using the MOSFIRE spectrograph at the Keck Observatory. First reported by Roberts-Borsani et al. (2015), it was selected for spectroscopic observations because of its photometric redshift ($z_{phot}=8.57^{+0.22}_{-0.43}$), apparent brightness (H$_{160}=25.26\pm0.09$) and red Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]-[4.5] color indicative of contamination by strong oxygen emission in the [4.5] band. With a total integration of $\sim$4.3 hours, our data reveal an emission line at $\simeq$11776 Å which we a…
