We present a comparison of the physical properties of the ionized gas in the circumgalactic (CGM) and intergalactic (IGM) media at $z\sim0$ between observations and four cosmological hydrodynamical simulations: Illustris, TNG300 of the IllustrisTNG project, EAGLE, and one of the Magneticum simulations. For the observational data, we use the gas properties that are inferred from cross-correlating the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) from the {\it Planck} CMB maps with the haloes and the large-scale structure reconstructed from Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. Both the observational and simulation results indicate that the integrated gas pressure in haloes deviates from the self-similar case, showing that feedback impacts haloes with $M_{500}\sim 10^{12-13}\,{\rm M_\odot}$. The simulations predict that more than half the baryons are displaced from haloes, while the gas fraction inferred from our observational data roughly equals the cosmic baryon fraction throughout the $M_{500}\sim 10^{12-14.5}\,{\rm M_\odot}$ halo mass range. All simulations tested here predict that the mean gas temperature in haloes is about the virial temperature, while that inferred from the SZE is up to one order of magnitude lower than that from the simulations (and also from X-ray observations). While a remarkable agreement is found for the average properties of the IGM between the observation and some simulations, we show that their dependence on the large-scale tidal field can break the degeneracy between models that show similar predictions otherwise. Finally, we show that the gas pressure and the electron density profiles from simulations are not well described by a generalized NFW (GNFW) profile. Instead, we present a new model with a mass-dependent shape that fits the profiles accurately.

We present a new perturbative approach to "constrained Ly$α$ radiative transfer'" (RT) through the circum- and inter-galactic medium (CGM and IGM). We constrain the HI content and kinematics of the CGM and IGM in a physically motivated model, using the galaxy-Ly$α$ forest clustering data from spectroscopic galaxy surveys in QSO fields at $z\sim2-3$. This enables us to quantify the impact of the CGM/IGM on Ly$α$ emission in an observationally constrained, realistic cosmological environment. Our model predicts that the CGM and IGM at these redshifts transmit $\approx80~\%$ of Ly$α$ photons after…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies serves as a record of the influences of outflows and accretion that drive the evolution of galaxies. Feedback from star formation drives outflows that carry mass and metals away from galaxies to the CGM, while infall from the intergalactic medium (IGM) is thought to bring in fresh gas to fuel star formation. Such exchanges of matter between IGM-CGM-galaxies have proven critical to producing galaxy scaling relations in cosmological simulations that match observations. However, the nature of these processes, of the physics that drives outflows and accr…
Over 80% of the cosmic baryon density is likely to be distributed in the diffuse, $\gtrsim10^{4}$ K circum- and inter-galactic medium (CGM and IGM respectively). We demonstrate that the dispersion measures (DMs) of samples of localized Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) can be used to measure the distribution of baryons between the CGM and IGM. We propose to separate the CGM and IGM contributions to FRB DMs by including redshift and mass measurements of intervening galaxies. Using simulated samples of FRB sightlines through intervening galaxy halos and an illustrative model for the CGM, and including re…
We introduce IGM-Vis, a novel astrophysics visualization and data analysis application for investigating galaxies and the gas that surrounds them in context with their larger scale environment, the Cosmic Web. Environment is an important factor in the evolution of galaxies from actively forming stars to quiescent states with little, if any, discernible star formation activity. The gaseous halos of galaxies (the circumgalactic medium, or CGM) play a critical role in their evolution, because the gas necessary to fuel star formation and any gas expelled from widely observed galactic winds must en…
We present further results of a survey for absorption line systems in the spectra of four high redshift quasars (5.79 $\le$ z$_{\textrm{em}}$ $\le$ 6.13) obtained with the ESO Very Large Telescope X-Shooter. We identify 36 $\textrm{CIV}$ and 7 $\textrm{SiIV}$ systems with a $\ge$ 5$σ$ significance. The highest redshift $\textrm{CIV}$ and $\textrm{SiIV}$ absorbers identified in this work are at z = 5.80738 $\pm$ 0.00017 and z = 5.77495 $\pm$ 0.00038, respectively. We compute the comoving mass density of $\textrm{SiIV}$ ($Ω_{\textrm{SiIV}}$) and find that it evolves from $Ω_{\textrm{SiIV}}$ = 4.…
In the present universe, magnetic fields exist with various strengths and on various scales. One possible origin of these cosmic magnetic fields is the primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) generated in the early universe. PMFs are considered to contribute to matter density evolution via Lorentz force and the thermal history of intergalactic medium (IGM) gas due to ambipolar diffusion. Therefore, information about PMFs should be included in the temperature anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background through the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect in IGM. In this article, given an initial pow…
Supernova driven winds are often invoked to remove chemically enriched gas from dwarf galaxies to match their low observed metallicities. In such shallow potential wells, outflows may produce massive amounts of enriched halo gas (circum-galactic medium or CGM) and pollute the intergalactic medium (IGM). Here, we present a survey of the CGM and IGM around 18 star-forming field dwarfs with stellar masses of $\log\,M_*/M_\odot\approx8-9$ at $z\approx0.2$. Eight of these have CGM probed by quasar absorption spectra at projected distances, $d$, less than the host virial radius, $R_{\rm h}$. Ten are…
We analyze the different fates of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in FIRE-2 cosmological simulations, focusing on the redshifts z=0.25 and z=2 representative of recent surveys. Our analysis includes 21 zoom-in simulations covering the halo mass range Mh(z=0) ~ 10^10 - 10^12 Msun. We analyze both where the gas ends up after first leaving the CGM (its "proximate" fate), as well as its location at z=0 (its "ultimate" fate). Of the CGM at z=2, about half is found in the ISM or stars of the central galaxy by z=0 in Mh(z=2) ~ 5e11 Msun halos, but most of the CGM in lower-mass halos ends up in the IG…
We examine the thermal energy contents of the intergalactic medium (IGM) over three orders of magnitude in both mass density and gas temperature using thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (tSZE). The analysis is based on {\it Planck} tSZE map and the cosmic density field, reconstructed for the SDSS DR7 volume and sampled on a grid of cubic cells of $(1h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$, together with a matched filter technique employed to maximize the signal-to-noise. Our results show that the pressure - density relation of the IGM is roughly a power law given by an adiabatic equation of state, with an indicati…
We use a particle tracking analysis to study the origins of the circumgalactic medium (CGM), separating it into (1) accretion from the intergalactic medium (IGM), (2) wind from the central galaxy, and (3) gas ejected from other galaxies. Our sample consists of 21 FIRE-2 simulations, spanning the halo mass range log(Mh/Msun) ~ 10-12 , and we focus on z=0.25 and z=2. Owing to strong stellar feedback, only ~L* halos retain a baryon mass >~50% of their cosmic budget. Metals are more efficiently retained by halos, with a retention fraction >~50%. Across all masses and redshifts analyzed >~60% of th…
We propose the use of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect to probe the circumgalactic medium (CGM), with the aid of a spectroscopic survey covering the same area of a SZ survey. One can design an optimal estimator of the kSZ effect of the CGM with a matched filter, and construct the cross correlation between the estimator and the peculiar velocity recovered from the galaxy survey, which can be measured by stacking a number of galaxies. We investigate two compelling profiles for the CGM, the MB profile (Maller & Bullock 2004) and the $β$ profile, and estimate the detectability against t…

We show the effects of AGN-driven outflows on the ejection of heavy elements using our cosmological simulations, where super-massive black holes originate from the first stars. In the most massive galaxy, we have identified two strong outflows unambiguously driven by AGN feedback. These outflows have a speed greater than $\sim 8000$ km\,s$^{-1}$ near the AGN, and travel out to a half Mpc with $\sim 3000$ km\,s$^{-1}$. These outflows remove the remaining gas ($\sim 3$ per cent of baryons) and significant amounts of metals ($\sim 2$ per cent of total produced metals) from the host galaxy, chemic…
We analyze the association of galaxies to Lya and OVI absorption, the most commonly detected transitions in the low-z intergalactic medium (IGM), in the fields of 14 quasars with z_em = 0.06-0.57. Confirming previous studies, we observe a high covering fraction for Lya absorption to impact parameter rho = 300kpc: 33/37 of our L>0.01L* galaxies show Lya equivalent width W_Lya>50mA. Galaxies of all luminosity L>0.01L* and spectral type are surrounded by a diffuse and ionized circumgalactic medium (CGM), whose baryonic mass is estimated at ~10^(10.5 +/- 0.3) Msun for a constant N_H. The virialize…
The thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect is a powerful tool with the potential for constraining directly the properties of the hot gas that dominates dark matter halos because it measures pressure and thus thermal energy density. Studying this hot component of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is important because it is strongly impacted by star-formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in galaxies, participating in the feedback loop that regulates star and black hole mass growth in galaxies. We study the tSZ effect across a wide halo mass range using three cosmological hydrodynamic…

The presence of ubiquitous magnetic fields in the universe is suggested from observations of radiation and cosmic ray from galaxies or the intergalactic medium (IGM). One possible origin of cosmic magnetic fields is the magnetogenesis in the primordial universe. Such magnetic fields are called primordial magnetic fields (PMFs), and are considered to affect the evolution of matter density fluctuations and the thermal history of the IGM gas. Hence the information of PMFs is expected to be imprinted on the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) through the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovic…
The discovery of giant quasar Ly$α$ nebulae at $z>2$ has opened up the possibility to directly study in emission the Circumgalactic and Intergalactic Medium (CGM/IGM). However, the resonant nature of the Ly$α$ line and its different emission mechanisms hamper the ability to constrain both the kinematics and physical properties of the CGM/IGM. Here, we present results of a pilot project aiming at the detection of CGM H$α$ emission, a line which does not suffer from these limitations. To this end, we first used KCWI to detect Ly$α$ emission around three bright quasars with $2.25<z<2.27$, a range…

The wavelength range 912-2000A (hereafter far-UV) provides access to absorption lines of the interstellar medium (ISM), circumgalactic medium (CGM), and intergalactic medium (IGM) in phases spanning a wide range of ionization, density, temperature, and molecular gas fraction. Far-UV space telescopes have enabled detailed studies of the ISM in the Milky Way, paving the way to understand in particular depletion of elements by condensation onto dust grains, molecular gas formation pathways, ionization processes, and the dynamics of shocks. An interesting prospect is to transpose the same level of…
We use observational measurements of thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, as well as soft X-ray emission associated with galaxy groups to constrain the gas density and temperature in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) for dark matter halos with masses above $10^{12.5}M_{\odot}$. A number of generic models are used together with a Bayesian scheme to make model inferences. We find that gas with a single temperature component cannot provide a consistent model to match the observational data. A simple two-phase model assuming a hot component and an ionized warm component can accommodate al…
We use observations of stacked X-ray luminosity and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signal from a cosmological sample of $\sim 80,000$ and $104,000$ massive galaxies, respectively, with $ 10^{12.6}\lesssim M_{500} \lesssim 10^{13} M_{\odot}$ and mean redshift, z $\sim$ 0.1 - 0.14 to constrain the hot Circumgalactic Medium (CGM) density and temperature. The X-ray luminosities constrain the density and hot CGM mass, while the SZ signal helps in breaking the density-temperature degeneracy. We consider a simple power-law density distribution ($n_e \propto r^{-3β}$) as well as a hydrostatic hot halo model,…
Observations of UV metal absorption lines have provided insight into the structure and composition of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around galaxies. We compare these observations with the low-redshift ($z \leq 0.3$) CGM around dwarf galaxies in high-resolution cosmological zoom-in runs in the FIRE-2 simulation suite. We select simulated galaxies that match the halo mass, stellar mass, and redshift of the observed samples. We produce absorption measurements using Trident for UV transitions of C IV, O VI, Mg II and Si III. The FIRE equivalent width (EW) distributions and covering fractions for…

We study the effects of cosmic rays (CRs) on outflows from star-forming galaxies in the circum and inter-galactic medium (CGM/IGM), in high-resolution, fully-cosmological FIRE-2 simulations (accounting for mechanical and radiative stellar feedback, magnetic fields, anisotropic conduction/viscosity/CR diffusion and streaming, and CR losses). We showed previously that massive ($M_{\rm halo}\gtrsim 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$), low-redshift ($z\lesssim 1-2$) halos can have CR pressure dominate over thermal CGM pressure and balance gravity, giving rise to a cooler CGM with an equilibrium density profile. …
We examine the thermodynamic state and cooling of the low-$z$ Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) in five FIRE-2 galaxy formation simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies. We find that the CGM in these simulations is generally multiphase and dynamic, with a wide spectrum of largely nonlinear density perturbations sourced by the accretion of gas from the Inter-Galactic Medium (IGM) and outflows from both the central and satellite galaxies. We investigate the origin of the multiphase structure of the CGM with a particle tracking analysis and find that most of the low entropy gas has cooled from the hot h…

Detection of thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect in the circumgalactic medium of low-mass galaxies -- a surprising pattern in self-similarity and baryon sufficiency
We use a sample of 27 GRBs at redshift $z=2-6$ to probe the outflows in their respective host galaxies ($\mathrm{log(M_*/M_{\odot})}~\sim~9-11$) and search for possible relations between the outflow properties and those of the host galaxies such as $\mathrm{M_*}$, SFR, and specific SFR. First, we consider three outflow properties $-$ outflow column density ($\mathrm{N_{out}}$), maximum outflow velocity ($\mathrm{V_{max}}$), and normalized maximum velocity ($\mathrm{V_{norm}}$ = $\mathrm{V_{max}/V_{circ, halo}}$, where $\mathrm{V_{circ,halo}}$ is the halo circular velocity). We observe clear tr…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) plays a vital role in the formation and evolution of galaxies, acting as a lifeline between galaxies and the surrounding intergalactic medium (IGM). In this study we leverage a unique sample of quasar pairs to investigate the properties of the CGM with absorption line tomography. We present a new sample of medium resolution Keck/ESI, Magellan/MagE, and VLT/XSHOOTER spectra of 29 quasar pairs at redshift $2 < z < 3$. We supplement the sample with additional spectra of 32 pairs from the literature, creating a catalog of 61 quasar pairs with angular separations bet…

The Ly$α$ emission line is one of the most promising probes of cosmic reionisation but isolating the signature of a change in the ionisation state of the IGM is challenging because of intrinsic evolution and internal radiation transfer effects. We present the first study of the evolution of Ly$α$ emitters (LAE) during the epoch of reionisation based on a full radiation-hydrodynamics cosmological simulation that is able to capture both the large-scale process of reionisation and the small-scale properties of galaxies. We predict the Ly$α$ emission of galaxies in the $10^3$ cMpc$^3$ SPHINX simul…
To investigate the evolution of dust in a cosmological volume, we perform hydrodynamic simulations, in which the enrichment of metals and dust is treated self-consistently with star formation and stellar feedback. We consider dust evolution driven by dust production in stellar ejecta, dust destruction by sputtering, grain growth by accretion and coagulation, and grain disruption by shattering, and treat small and large grains separately to trace the grain size distribution. After confirming that our model nicely reproduces the observed relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity for nea…
The majority of baryons reside beyond the optical extent of a galaxy in the circumgalactic and intergalactic media (CGM/IGM). Gaseous halos are inextricably linked to the appearance of their host galaxies through a complex story of accretion, feedback, and continual recycling. The energetic processes, which define the state of gas in the CGM, are the same ones that 1) regulate stellar growth so that it is not over-efficient, and 2) create the diversity of today's galaxy colors, SFRs, and morphologies spanning Hubble's Tuning Fork Diagram. They work in concert to set the speed of growth on the …

Hydrogen Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emission has been one of the major observational probes for the high redshift universe, since the first discoveries of high-$z$ Ly$α$ emitting galaxies in the late 1990s. Due to the strong Ly$α$ emission originated by resonant scattering and recombination of the most-abundant element, Ly$α$ observations witness not only HII regions of star formation and AGN but also diffuse HI gas in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) and the inter-galactic medium (IGM). Here we review Ly$α$ sources, and present theoretical interpretations reached to date. We conclude that: 1) A typica…
We study the link between galaxies and HI-selected absorption systems at z~3-4 in the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey, an ESO large programme consisting of integral field pectroscopic observations of 28 quasar fields hosting 61 strong absorbers with $\rm N_{\rm HI}\gtrsim 10^{16.5}~\rm cm^{-2}$. We identify 127 Ly$α$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) around the absorbers, corresponding to a detection rate of 82$\pm$16 per cent. The luminosity function of these LAEs is approximately 5 times higher in normalization than the field population and we detect a significant clustering of gal…
We present an analytic model for the cool, $T \approx 10^4$ K, circumgalactic medium (CGM), describing the gas distribution, thermal and ionization state. Our model assumes (total) pressure equilibrium with the ambient warm/hot CGM, photoionization by the metagalactic radiation field, and allows for non-thermal pressure support, parametrized by the ratio of thermal pressures, $η= P_{\rm hot,th}/P_{\rm cool,th}$. We apply the model to the COS-Halos data set and find that a nominal model with $η= 3$, gas distribution out to $r \approx 0.6 R_{\rm vir}$, and $M_{\rm cool} = 3 \times 10^9~{\rm M_{\…
