We study the effects of cosmic rays (CRs) on outflows from star-forming galaxies in the circum and inter-galactic medium (CGM/IGM), in high-resolution, fully-cosmological FIRE-2 simulations (accounting for mechanical and radiative stellar feedback, magnetic fields, anisotropic conduction/viscosity/CR diffusion and streaming, and CR losses). We showed previously that massive ($M_{\rm halo}\gtrsim 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$), low-redshift ($z\lesssim 1-2$) halos can have CR pressure dominate over thermal CGM pressure and balance gravity, giving rise to a cooler CGM with an equilibrium density profile. This dramatically alters outflows. Absent CRs, high gas thermal pressure in massive halos "traps" galactic outflows near the disk, so they recycle. With CRs injected in supernovae as modeled here, the low-pressure halo allows "escape" and CR pressure gradients continuously accelerate this material well into the IGM in "fast" outflows, while lower-density gas at large radii is accelerated in-situ into "slow" outflows that extend to $>$Mpc scales. CGM/IGM outflow morphologies are radically altered: they become mostly volume-filling (with inflow in a thin mid-plane layer) and coherently biconical from the disk to $>$Mpc. The CR-driven outflows are primarily cool ($T\sim10^{5}\,$K) and low-velocity. All of these effects weaken and eventually vanish at lower halo masses ($\lesssim 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$) or higher redshifts ($z\gtrsim 1-2$), reflecting the ratio of CR to thermal+gravitational pressure in the outer halo. We present a simple analytic model which explains all of the above phenomena.
We report on a sample of 51 nearby, star-forming galaxies observed with the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. We calculate Si II kinematics and densities arising from warm gas entrained in galactic outflows. We use multi-wavelength ancillary data to estimate stellar masses (M$_\ast$), star-formation rates (SFR), and morphologies. We derive significant correlations between outflow velocity and SFR$^{\sim 0.1}$, M$_\ast^{\sim 0.1}$ and v$_\text{circ}^{\sim 1/2}$. Some mergers drive outflows faster than these relations prescribe, launching the outflow faster than the escap…
The gas-phase metallicity of low-mass galaxies increases with increasing stellar mass ($M_\ast$) and is nearly constant for high-mass galaxies. Theory suggests that this tight mass-metallicity relationship is shaped by galactic outflows removing metal-enriched gas from galaxies. Here, we observationally model the outflow metallicities of the warm outflowing phase from a sample of seven local star-forming galaxies with stellar masses between 10$^{7}$-10$^{11}$ M$_\odot$. We estimate the outflow metallicities using four weak rest-frame ultraviolet absorption lines, the observed stellar continua,…
There is wide consensus that galaxy outflows are one of the most important processes determining the evolution of galaxies through cosmic time, for example playing a key role in shaping the galaxy mass function. Our understanding of outflows and their drivers, however, is in its infancy --- this is particularly true for the cold (neutral atomic and molecular) phases of outflows, which present observational and modeling challenges. Here we outline several key open questions, briefly discussing the requirements of the observations necessary to make progress, and the relevance of several existing…
The highly energetic outflows from Active Galactic Nuclei detected in X-rays are one of the most powerful mechanisms by which the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) interacts with the host galaxy. The last two decades of high resolution X-ray spectroscopy with XMM and Chandra have improved our understanding of the nature of these outflowing ionized absorbers and we are now poised to take the next giant leap with higher spectral resolution and higher throughput observatories to understand the physics and impact of these outflows on the host galaxy gas. The future studies on X-ray outflows n…
We present the new TNG50 cosmological, magnetohydrodynamical simulation -- the third and final volume of the IllustrisTNG project. This simulation occupies a unique combination of large volume and high resolution, with a 50 Mpc box sampled by 2160^3 gas cells (baryon mass of 8x10^4 Msun). The median spatial resolution of star-forming ISM gas is ~100-140 parsecs. This resolution approaches or exceeds that of modern 'zoom' simulations of individual massive galaxies, while the volume contains ~20,000 resolved galaxies with M*>10^7 Msun. Herein we show first results from TNG50, focusing on galacti…
Models of the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium, galaxies, and the Universe rely on our understanding of the amounts and chemical composition of the material returned by stars and supernovae. Stellar yields are obtained from stellar-evolution models, which currently lack predictive prescriptions of stellar mass loss, although it significantly affects stellar lifetimes, nucleosynthesis, and chemical ejecta. Galaxy properties are derived from observations of the integrated light of bright member stars. Stars in the late stages of their evolution are among the infrared-brightest objec…
We present an analysis of the spatial distribution of metal-rich gas in ten galaxy clusters using deep observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The brightest cluster galaxies have experienced recent AGN activity in the forms of bright radio emission, cavities, and shock fronts embedded in the hot atmospheres. The heavy elements are distributed anisotropically and are aligned with the large-scale radio and cavity axes. They are apparently being transported from the halo of the brightest cluster galaxy into the intracluster medium along large-scale outflows driven by the radio jets. The …
Galactic outflows are believed to play an important role in regulating star formation in galaxies, but estimates of the outflowing mass and momentum have historically been based on uncertain assumptions. Here, we measure the mass, momentum, and energy outflow rates of seven nearby star-forming galaxies using ultraviolet absorption lines and observationally motivated estimates for the density, metallicity, and radius of the outflow. Low-mass galaxies generate outflows faster than their escape velocities with mass outflow rates up to twenty times larger than their star formation rates. These out…
In hierarchical structure formation, merging of galaxies is frequent and known to dramatically affect their properties. To comprehend these interactions high-resolution simulations are indispensable because of the nonlinear coupling between pc and Mpc scales. To this end, we present the first adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulation of two merging, low mass, initially gas-rich galaxies (1.8e10 Ms each), including star formation and feedback. With galaxies resolved by ~2e7 total computational elements, we achieve unprecedented resolution of the multiphase interstellar medium, finding a widespr…
We investigate quasar outflows at $z \geq 6$ by performing zoom-in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. By employing the SPH code GADGET-3, we zoom in the $2 R_{200}$ region around a $2 \times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$ halo at $z = 6$, inside a $(500 ~ {\rm Mpc})^3$ comoving volume. We compare the results of our AGN runs with a control simulation in which only stellar/SN feedback is considered. Seeding $10^5 M_{\odot}$ BHs at the centers of $10^{9} M_{\odot}$ halos, we find the following results. BHs accrete gas at the Eddington rate over $z = 9 - 6$. At $z = 6$, our most-massive BH has grown to …
We study the gas inflow rate ($ζ_{\rm inflow}$) and outflow rate ($ζ_{\rm outflow}$) evolution of local Milky Way-mass star-forming galaxies (SFGs) since $z=1.3$. The stellar mass growth history of Milky Way-mass progenitor SFGs is inferred from the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR)$-$stellar mass ($M_{\ast}$) relation, and the gas mass ($M_{\rm gas}$) is derived using the recently established gas scaling relations. With the $M_{\ast}+M_{\rm gas}$ growth curve, the net inflow rate $κ$ is quantified at each cosmic epoch. At $z\sim 1.3$, $κ$ is comparable with the SFR, whereas it rapidl…
We show the effects of AGN-driven outflows on the ejection of heavy elements using our cosmological simulations, where super-massive black holes originate from the first stars. In the most massive galaxy, we have identified two strong outflows unambiguously driven by AGN feedback. These outflows have a speed greater than $\sim 8000$ km\,s$^{-1}$ near the AGN, and travel out to a half Mpc with $\sim 3000$ km\,s$^{-1}$. These outflows remove the remaining gas ($\sim 3$ per cent of baryons) and significant amounts of metals ($\sim 2$ per cent of total produced metals) from the host galaxy, chemic…
We present semi-analytical models for magnetisation of the void inter-galactic medium (IGM) by outflows from void galaxies. The number density of dark matter haloes in an under-dense region (i.e., void) is obtained using the excursion set method extended for such low density environment. The star formation in such haloes has been estimated, taking account of the negative feedback by supernovae. The galaxy formation/evolution model is tuned to provide the $r$-band luminosity function, the stellar mass function and also the color of void galaxies as obtained from recent observations. This star f…
$f(R)$ is a paradigmatic modified gravity theory that typifies extensions to General Relativity with new light degrees of freedom and hence screened fifth forces between masses. These forces produce observable signatures in galaxy morphology, caused by a violation of the weak equivalence principle due to a differential impact of screening among galaxies' mass components. We compile statistical datasets of two morphological indicators -- offsets between stars and gas in galaxies and warping of stellar disks -- and use them to constrain the strength and range of a thin-shell-screened fifth force…
We study the distribution and kinematics of the cool circumgalactic medium (CGM) of emission line galaxies (ELGs) traced by metal absorption lines. Using about 200,000 ELGs from SDSS-IV eBOSS and half a million background quasars from SDSS, we measure the median absorption strength of MgII and FeII lines in quasar spectra for impact parameters ranging from 10 kpc to 1 Mpc. For comparison we measure the same quantity around luminous red galaxies (LRGs). On scales greater than 100 kpc both ELGs and LRGs exhibit similar absorption profiles. However, metal absorption is 5-10 times stronger around …
Feedback from outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) can affect the distribution and properties of the gaseous halos of galaxies. We study the hydrodynamics and non-thermal emission from the forward outflow shock produced by an AGN-driven outflow. We consider a few possible profiles for the halo gas density, self-consistently constrained by the halo mass, redshift and the disk baryonic concentration of the galaxy. We show that the outflow velocity levels off at $\sim 10^3\,\rm km\, s^{-1}$ within the scale of the galaxy disk. Typically, the outflow can reach the virial radius around t…

Black hole driven outflows have been observed in some dwarf galaxies with active galactic nuclei (1), and likely play a role in heating and expelling gas (thereby suppressing star formation), as they do in larger galaxies (2). The extent to which black hole outflows can trigger star formation in dwarf galaxies is unclear, because work in this area has hitherto focused on massive galaxies and the observational evidence is scarce (3,4,5). Henize 2-10 is a dwarf starburst galaxy previously reported to have a central massive black hole (6,7,8,9), though that interpretation has been disputed since …
In this paper we present Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) 3.5 mm observations and SubMillimeter Array (SMA) 870 microns observations toward the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 1816-2048, the core of the HH 80/81/80N system. Molecular emission from HCN, HCO+ and SiO is tracing two molecular outflows (the so-called Northeast and Northwest outflows). These outflows have their origin in a region close to the position of MM2, a millimeter source known to harbor a couple protostars. We estimate for the first time the physical characteristics of these molecular outf…
We explore the effect of momentum-driven winds representing radiation pressure driven outflows from accretion onto supermassive black holes in a set of numerical hydrodynamical simulations. We explore two matched sets of cosmological zoom-in runs of 24 halos with masses ~$10^{12.0}-10^{13.4}$ M_sun run with two different feedback models. Our `NoAGN' model includes stellar feedback via UV heating, stellar winds and supernovae, photoelectric heating and cosmic X-ray background heating from a meta-galactic background. Our fiducial `MrAGN' model is identical except that it also includes a model fo…
Ionized outflows, revealed by broad asymmetric wings of the [OIII] line, are commonly observed in AGN but the low intrinsic spatial resolution of observations has generally prevented a detailed characterization of their properties. The MAGNUM survey aims at overcoming these limitations by focusing on the nearest AGN, including NGC 1365, a nearby Seyfert galaxy (D~17 Mpc), hosting a low-luminosity AGN (Lbol ~ 2x10^43 erg/s). We want to obtain a detailed picture of the ionized gas in the central ~5 kpc of NGC 1365 in terms of physical properties, kinematics, and ionization mechanisms. We also ai…
We have made mapping observations of L1551 IRS 5, L1551NE, L723, and L43 and single-point observations of IRAS 16293-2422 in the submillimeter CS (J = 7-6) and HCN (J = 4-3) lines with ASTE. Including our previous ASTE observations of L483 and B335, we found a clear linear correlation between the source bolometric luminosities and the total integrated intensities of the submillimeter lines (I_CS ~L_bol^0.92). The combined ASTE + SMA CS (7-6) image of L1551 IRS 5 exhibits an extended (~2000 AU) component tracing the associated reflection nebula at the west and southwest, as well as a compact (<…
We report molecular line observations in the CO J=3$\rightarrow$2, 6$\rightarrow$5 and 7$\rightarrow$6 transitions, made using the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment Telescope (APEX), toward the massive and dense core IRAS 16562$-$3959. This core harbors a string of radio sources thought to be powered by a central collimated jet of ionized gas. The molecular observations show the presence of high velocity gas exhibiting a quadrupolar morphology, most likely produced by the presence of two collimated outflows. The southeast-northwest molecular outflow is aligned with the string of radio continuum so…
