For each prime $p\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ consider the Legendre character $χ=(\frac{\cdot}{p})$. Let $p_\pm(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ into parts $λ>0$ such that $χ(λ)=\pm 1$. Petersson proved a beautiful limit formula for the ratio of $p_+(n)$ to $p_-(n)$ as $n\to\infty$ expressed in terms of important invariants of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$. But his proof is not illuminating and Grosswald conjectured a more natural proof using a Tauberian converse of the Stolz-Cesàro theorem. In this paper we suggest an approach to address Grosswald's conjecture. We discuss a monotonicity conjecture which looks quite natural in the context of the monotonicity theorems of Bateman-Erdős.
Using a cubic moment, we prove a Weyl-type subconvexity bound for the quadratic twists of a holomorphic newform of square-free level, trivial nebentypus, and arbitrary even weight. This generalizes work of Conrey and Iwaniec in that the newform that is being twisted may have arbitrary square-free level, and also that the quadratic character may have even conductor. One of the new tools developed in this paper is a more general Petersson formula for newforms of square-free level.

In this paper we discuss the problem of numerically computing Petersson inner products of modular forms, given their $q$-expansion at $\infty$. A formula of Nelson reduces this to obtaining $q$-expansions at all cusps, and we describe two algorithms based on linear interpolation for numerically obtaining such expansions. We apply our methods to numerically verify constants arising in an explicit version of Ichino's triple-product formula relating $\langle fg,h\rangle$ to the central value of $L(f\times g\times \bar{h},s)$, for three modular forms $f,g,h$ of compatible weights and characters.
This paper initiates the study by analytic methods of the generalized principal series Maass forms on $GL(3)$. These forms occur as an infinite sequence of one-parameter families in the two-parameter spectrum of $GL(3)$ Maass forms, analogous to the relationship between the holomorphic modular forms and the spherical Maass cusp forms on $GL(2)$. We develop a Kuznetsov trace formula attached to these forms at each weight and use it to prove an arithmetically-weighted Weyl law, demonstrating the existence of forms which are not self-dual. Previously, the only such forms that were known to exist …
We extend Venkatesh's proof of the converse theorem for classical holomorphic modular forms to arbitrary level and character. The method of proof, via the Petersson trace formula, allows us to treat arbitrary degree 2 gamma factors of Selberg class type.
We prove a formula of Petersson's type for Fourier coefficients of Siegel cusp forms of degree 2 with respect to congruence subgroups, and as a corollary, show upper bound estimates of individual Fourier coefficient. The method in this paper is essentially a generalization of Kitaoka's previous work which studied the full modular case, but some modification is necessary to obtain estimates which are sharp with respect to the level aspect.
A new recursive procedure for calculation of restricted partition function is suggested. An explicit formula for the restricted partition function is found based on this procedure.
This note rederives a formula for $r$-color partitions, $1 \le r \le 24$, including Rademacher's celebrated result for ordinary partitions, from the duality between modular forms of weights $-r/2$ and $2+r/2$.
A Rademacher-type convergent series formula which generalizes the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula for the number of partitions of $n$ and the Zuckerman formula for the Fourier coefficients of $\vartheta_4(0\vert τ)^{-1}$ is presented.
In this paper, we investigate $π(m,n)$, the number of partitions of the \emph{bipartite number} $(m,n)$ into \emph{steadily decreasing} parts, introduced by L.Carlitz ['A problem in partitions', Duke Math Journal 30 (1963), 203--213]. We give a relation between $π(m,n)$ and the crank statistic $M(m,n)$ for integer partitions. Using this relation, some uniform asymptotic formulas for $π(m,n)$ are established.
In 1917, Hardy and Ramanujan obtained the asymptotic formula for the classical partition function $p(n)$. The classical partition function $p(n)$ has been extensively studied. Recently, Luca and Ralaivaosaona obtained the asymptotic formula for the square-root function. Many mathematicians have paid much attention to congruences on some special colored partition functions. In this paper, we investigate the general colored partition functions. Given positive integers $1=s_1<s_2<\dots <s_k$ and $\ell_1, \ell_2,\dots , \ell_k$. Let $g(\mathbf{s}, \mathbf{l}, n)$ be the number of $\ell$-colored pa…
Explicit expressions for restricted partition function $W(s,{\bf d}^m)$ and its quasiperiodic components $W_j(s,{\bf d}^m)$ (called Sylvester waves) for a set of positive integers ${\bf d}^m = \{d_1, d_2, ..., d_m\}$ are derived. The formulas are represented in a form of a finite sum over Bernoulli polynomials of higher order with periodic coefficients.
Let $p_{r,s}(n)$ denote the number of partitions of a positive integer $n$ into parts containing no multiples of $r$ or $s$, where $r>1$ and $s>1$ are square-free, relatively prime integers. We use classical methods to derive a Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher-type infinite series for $p_{r,s}(n)$.
In this article we will derive a combinatorial formula for the partition function p(n). In the second part of the paper we will establish connection between partitions and q-binomial coefficients and give new interpretation for q-binomial coefficients.
Define a "nuclear partition" to be an integer partition with no part equal to one. In this study we prove a simple formula to compute the partition function $p(n)$ by counting only the nuclear partitions of $n$, a vanishingly small subset by comparison with all partitions of $n$ as $n\to \infty$. Variations on the proof yield other formulas for $p(n)$, as well as Ramanujan-like congruences and an application to parity of the partition function.
Let $A_{3}(n)$ (resp. ${{B}_{3}}(n)$) denote the number of partition pairs (resp. triples) of $n$ where each partition is 3-core. By applying Ramanujan's ${}_{1}ψ_{1}$ formula and Bailey's ${}_{6}ψ_{6}$ formula, we find the explicit formulas for $A_{3}(n)$ and $B_{3}(n)$. Using these formulas, we confirm a conjecture of Xia and establish many arithmetic identities satisfied by $A_{3}(n)$ and $B_{3}(n)$.
Let $A_{t,k}(n)$ denote the number of partition $k$-tuples of $n$ where each partition is $t$-core. In this paper, we establish formulas of $A_{t,k}(n)$ for some values of $t$ and $k$ by employing the method of modular forms, which extends Wang's result for $t=3$ and $k=2,3$.
We derive the asymptotic formula for $p_n(N,M)$, the number of partitions of integer $n$ with part size at most $N$ and length at most $M$. We consider both $N$ and $M$ are comparable to $\sqrt{n}$. This is an extension of the classical Hardy-Ramanujan formula and Szekeres' formula. The proof relies on the saddle point method.
Since their introduction by Andrews, generalized Frobenius partitions have interested a number of authors, many of whom have worked out explicit formulas for their generating functions in specific cases. This has uncovered interesting combinatorial structure and led to proofs of a number of congruences. In this paper, we show how Andrews' generating functions can be cast in the framework of Eichler and Zagier's Jacobi forms. This reformulation allows us to compute explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions (and in fact provides formulas for further functions…
We prove an exact formula for OEIS A000119, which counts partitions into distinct Fibonacci numbers. We also establish an exact formula for its mean value, and determine the asymptotic behaviour.
The partition function $p(n)$ has been a testing ground for applications of analytic number theory to combinatorics. In particular, Hardy and Ramanujan invented the "circle method" to estimate the size of $p(n)$, which was later perfected by Rademacher who obtained an exact formula. Recently, Chan and Wang considered the fractional partition functions, defined by $\sum_{n = 0}^\infty p_α(n)x^n := \prod_{k=1}^\infty (1-x^k)^{-α}$. In this paper we use the Rademacher circle method to find an exact formula for $p_α(n)$ and study its implications, including log-concavity and the higher-order gener…
We revisit a formula for the number of plane partitions due to Almkvist. Using the circle method, we provide modifications to his formula along with estimates of the errors. We show that the improved formula continues to be an asymptotic series. Nevertheless, an optimal truncation (i.e., superasymptotic) of the formula provides exact numbers of plane partitions for all positive integers n <6400 and numbers with estimated errors for larger values. For instance, the formula correctly reproduces 305 of the 316 digits of the numbers of plane partitions of 6999 as predicted by the estimated error. …
