This paper aims to improve robots' versatility and adaptability by allowing them to use a large variety of end-effector tools and quickly adapt to new tools. We propose AdaGrasp, a method to learn a single grasping policy that generalizes to novel grippers. By training on a large collection of grippers, our algorithm is able to acquire generalizable knowledge of how different grippers should be used in various tasks. Given a visual observation of the scene and the gripper, AdaGrasp infers the possible grasp poses and their grasp scores by computing the cross convolution between the shape encodings of the gripper and scene. Intuitively, this cross convolution operation can be considered as an efficient way of exhaustively matching the scene geometry with gripper geometry under different grasp poses (i.e., translations and orientations), where a good "match" of 3D geometry will lead to a successful grasp. We validate our methods in both simulation and real-world environments. Our experiment shows that AdaGrasp significantly outperforms the existing multi-gripper grasping policy method, especially when handling cluttered environments and partial observations. This study proposed a novel robotic gripper that can achieve grasping and infinite wrist twisting motions using a single actuator. The gripper is equipped with a differential gear mechanism that allows switching between the grasping and twisting motions according to the magnitude of the tip force applied to the finger. The grasping motion is activated when the tip force is below a set value, and the wrist twisting motion is activated when the tip force exceeds this value. "Twist grasping," a special grasping mode that allows the wrapping of a flexible thin object around the fingers of the grip…
This letter presents a novel small gripper capable of grasping various types of small-sized items from flat surfaces for the assembly of small devices. Using a single actuator, the proposed gripper realizes two grasping modes: parallel-grip and turn-over modes. The gripper's mode can be switched via contact with a flat surface, such as a table. Handling thin thicknesses and light weights are the key challenges faced in attempts to grasp small-sized items. Although parallel grippers are effective in handling small items, there is a limit to the thinness of objects that can be grasped by paralle…

Aerial transportation requires a simple yet reliable gripper for picking and placing objects of interest. In this work, we design an aerial gripper for passive grasping and impulsive release of ferrous coated objects. Permanent magnets are used for passive grasping and the Scotch Yoke mechanism is used for providing impulsive force to drop the object. The load carrying capacity of the gripper is calculated theoretically and experimentally. The parameters such as the radius of the rotating disk and length of the slider in the Scotch Yoke mechanism were optimized using weighted geometric program…

Over the past few decades, efforts have been made towards robust robotic grasping, and therefore dexterous manipulation. The soft gripper has shown their potential in robust grasping due to their inherent properties-low, control complexity, and high adaptability. However, the deformation of the soft gripper when interacting with objects bring inaccuracy of grasped objects, which causes instability for robust grasping and further manipulation. In this paper, we present an omni-directional adaptive soft finger that can sense deformation based on embedded optical fibers and the application of mac…

Soft robotic grippers are shown to be high effective for grasping unstructured objects with simple sensing and control strategies. However, they are still limited by their speed, sensing capabilities and actuation mechanism. Hence, their usage have been restricted in highly dynamic grasping tasks. This paper presents a soft robotic gripper with tunable bistable properties for sensor-less dynamic grasping. The bistable mechanism allows us to store arbitrarily large strain energy in the soft system which is then released upon contact. The mechanism also provides flexibility on the type of actuat…

Grasping unknown objects has been an active research topic for decades. Approaches range from using various sensors (e.g. vision, tactile) to gain information about the object, to building passively compliant hands that react appropriately to contacts. In this paper, we focus on grasping unknown objects using proprioception (the combination of joint position and torque sensing). Our hypothesis is that proprioception alone can be the basis for versatile performance, including multiple types of grasps for objects with multiple shapes and sizes, and transitions between grasps. Using a series-elas…

Soft grippers, for stable grasping of objects, with high compliance could be considered a suitable candidate for replacement of conventional rigid grippers, and in recent years, they have been emerging exponentially in industries. Not only are these highly adaptable grippers capable of static grasping of an object, but also they can be utilized for performing object manipulation tasks. Plenty of contemporary studies have been emphasizing on static grasping ability of soft grippers. However, in this thesis, planar in-hand object manipulation in a soft gripper which comprises a pair of soft fing…

In this paper we explore state-of-the-art underactuated, compliant robot gripper designs through looking at their performance on a generic grasping task. Starting from a state of the art open gripper design, we propose design modifications, and importantly, evaluate all designs on a grasping experiment involving a selection of objects resulting in 3600 object-gripper interactions. Interested in non-planned grasping but rather on a design's generic performance, we explore the influence of object shape, pose and orientation relative to the gripper and its finger number and configuration. Using op…

Teleoperation is often limited by the ability of an operator to react and predict the behavior of the robot as it interacts with the environment. For example, to grasp small objects on a table, the teleoperator needs to predict the position of the fingertips before the fingers are closed to avoid them hitting the table. For that reason, we developed the F1 hand, a single-motor gripper that facilitates teleoperation with the use of a fixed finger. The hand is capable of grasping objects as thin as a paper clip, and as heavy and large as a cordless drill. The applicability of the hand can be exp…

In this paper, a 1-DoF gripper mechanism has been synthesized for the type of mechanism, number of links and joints, and the dimensions of length, width and thickness of links. The type synthesis is done by selecting the proper class of mechanism from Reuleaux's six classes of mechanisms. The number synthesis is done by using an algebraic method. The dimensions of the linkages are found using the geometric programming method. The gripper is then modeled in a computer aided design software and then fabricated using an additive manufacturing technique. Finally the gripper mechanism with DC motor…
In this paper, design and development of a sensor integrated adaptive gripper is presented. Adaptive grippers are useful for grasping objects of varied geometric shapes by wrapping fingers around the object. The finger closing sequence in adaptive grippers may lead to ejection of the object from the gripper due to any unbalanced grasping force and such grasp failure is common for lightweight objects. Designing of the proposed gripper is focused on ensuring stable grasp on a wide variety of objects, especially, for lightweight objects (e.g., empty plastic bottles). The actuation mechanism is ba…

A key challenge in robotics is to create efficient methods for grasping objects with diverse shapes, sizes, poses, and properties. Grasping with hand-like end effectors often requires careful selection of hand orientation and finger placement. Here, we present a soft, fingerless gripper capable of efficiently generating multiple grasping modes. It is based on a soft, cylindrical accordion structure containing coupled, parallel fluidic channels. It is controlled via pressure supplied from a single fluidic port. Inflation opens the gripper orifice for enveloping an object, while deflation allows…
In the robotic crop harvesting environment, foreign objects intrusion in the gripper workspace is frequently occurring and unignorable, however, rarely addressed. This paper presents a novel intelligent robotic grasping method capable of handling obstacle interference, which is the first of its kind in the literature. The proposed method combines deep learning algorithms with low-cost tactile sensing hardware on a multi-DoF soft robotic gripper. Through experimental validations, the proposed method demonstrated promising performance in distinguishing various grasping scenarios. The 4-finger in…

We propose a novel tri-fingered soft robotic gripper with decoupled stiffness and shape control capability for performing adaptive grasping with minimum system complexity. The proposed soft fingers adaptively conform to object shapes facilitating the handling of objects of different types, shapes, and sizes. Each soft gripper finger has an inextensible articulable backbone and is actuated by pneumatic muscles. We derive a kinematic model of the gripper and use an empirical approach to map input pressures to stiffness and bending deformation of fingers. We use these mappings to achieve decouple…

Robots with multi-fingered grippers could perform advanced manipulation tasks for us if we were able to properly specify to them what to do. In this study, we take a step in that direction by making a robot grasp an object like a grasping demonstration performed by a human. We propose a novel optimization-based approach for transferring human grasp demonstrations to any multi-fingered grippers, which produces robotic grasps that mimic the human hand orientation and the contact area with the object, while alleviating interpenetration. Extensive experiments with the Allegro and BarrettHand gripp…
