Motivated by the emerging experiments [e.g. \textit{Z. Nie et al. Nat. Photon. \textbf{12}, 489 (2018)}] on producing infrared (IR) single cycle pulses in the spectral region 5 - 14 $μm$, we theoretically investigate their role for controlling high-order harmonic generation (HHG) process induced by an intense near-infrared (NIR) multi-cycle pulse ($λ$ = 1.27 $μm$). The scenario is demonstrated for a prototype of the hydrogen atom by numerical simulations of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. In particular, we show that the combined pulses allow one to generate even-order harmonics and most importantly to produce high-energy plateaus and that the harmonic cutoff is extended by a factor of 3 compared to the case with the NIR pulse alone. The emerged high-energy plateaus is understood as a result of a vast momentum transfer from the single-cycle field to the ionized electrons while travelling in the NIR field, and thus leading to high-momentum electron recollisions. We also identify the role of the IR single-cycle field for controlling the directionality of the emitted electrons via the IR-field induced electron displacement effect. We further show that the emerged plateaus can be controlled by varying the relative carrier-envelope phase between the two pulses as well as their wavelengths. Thus, our findings open up new perspectives for time-resolved electron diffraction using an IR single-cycle field-assisted high-harmonic spectroscopy.
We study the crystal-momentum-resolved contributions to the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in band-gap materials, and identify the relevant initial crystal momenta for the first and higher plateaus of the HHG spectra. We do so by using a time-dependent density-functional theory model of one-dimensional linear chains. We introduce a self-consistent periodic treatment for the infinitely extended limit of the linear chain model, which provides a convenient way to simulate and discuss the HHG from a perfect crystal beyond the single-active-electron approximation. The multi-plateau spectral f…
The strong-field approximation for high-harmonic generation in near-infrared and infrared laser pulses is formulated in the accelerated Kramers-Henneberger frame. The accompanying physical picture is discussed and the nature of the leading-order term is contrasted with that of the three-step model following the strong-field-approximation formulation in the length or velocity gauges. The theory is illustrated by high-harmonic generation spectra for atomic hydrogen.
We studied the high-harmonic generation by the interaction of sub-cycle laser pulses with the He atom. The sub-cycle pulses are modeled using the complex source vector beam model, which is an exact solution to Maxwell's equations and accurately models the sub-cycle field profiles. We observed that the harmonic cutoff could be extended with the variation of the sub-cycle pulse duration, mainly because of the inherent blueshift associated with shorter pulses. The scaling laws for the harmonic yield and harmonic cutoff energy with pulse duration and fundamental driver wavelengths are also deduced…
We theoretically investigate the generation of higher harmonics and the construction of a single attosecond pulse by means of two oppositely polarized sinc-shaped driver pulses. In comparison to a few-cycle Gaussian pulse of the same energy, here we observe a significant broadening in the bandwidth of an XUV/soft-Xray supercontinuum spectrum in the synthesized pulse. Furthermore, we observe that the harmonic cutoff and its corresponding intensity follow a well-defined scaling with the {\it delay parameter} between the two pulses. In principle, this delay can easily be tuned in on an optical be…
We present theoretical results on the high-harmonic generation (HHG) in bulk diamond induced by intense laser pulse of wavelength 800 nm and duration 15 fs. For laser intensity in the range $1 \le I \le 50 $ TW/cm$^2$ above bandgap harmonics are generated after the pulse peak. We find that the intensity of individual harmonics increases non-linearly with the peak laser intensity, following a non-perturbative trend. For moderate intensity the HHG spectrum exhibits a primary plateau with noisy odd order harmonic structure and a cutoff. For increased laser intensity a secondary plateau emerges wi…
We present calculation of photoexcitation and high-harmonic generation in bulk diamond induced by intense near-infrared laser pulse of photon energy 1.55 eV, time duration of 15 fs and peak field strength $F=$ 0.4 V/Å. Depending on the laser polarization direction, the pulsed irradiation creates electron-hole pairs and transient density fluctuations in a localized region of the crystal momentum space. As a consequence energetic inter- and intra-band harmonics are generated with alternating phase during each half-cycle of the driving pulse. The corresponding inter- and intra-band currents are i…
We present the generation of high order harmonics in crystalline silicon subjected to intense near-infrared 30fs laser pulse. The harmonic spectrum extends from the near infrared to the extreme ultraviolet spectral region. Depending on the pulsed laser intensity, we distinguish two regimes of harmonic generation: (i) perturbative regime: electron-hole pairs born during each half-cycle of the laser pulse via multiphoton and tunnel transitions are accelerated in the laser electric field and gain kinetic energy; the electron-hole pairs then recombine in the ground state by emitting a single high-…

We report the observation of multiple ionization of Argon through multi-XUV-photon absorption induced by an unprecedentedly powerful laser driven high-harmonic-generation source. Comparing the measured intensity dependence of the yield of the different Argon charge states with numerical calculations we can infer the different channels -direct and sequential- underlying the interaction. While such studies were feasible so far only with FEL sources, this work connects highly-non-linear-XUV-processes with the ultra-short time scales, inherent to the harmonic pulses, and highlights the advanced pe…
The self-trapping critical power of light propagation is one of the key physical quantities characterizing nonlinear-beam propagation. Above the critical power, the spatial and temporal profiles of the beam deviate from its original shapes. Therefore, the critical power is considered an important indicator in nonlinear optical phenomena, such as filamentation and laser processing. However, although the concept of the critical power has been established for fundamental waves, it remains unclear if the power-dependent phenomena can also be observed in harmonic generation because of the complex i…
Using dynamical Hartree-Fock mean-field theory, we study the high-harmonic generation (HHG) in the fullerene molecules C$_{60}$ and C$_{70}$ under strong pump wave driving. We consider a strong-field regime and show that the output harmonic radiation exhibits multiple plateaus, whose borders are defined by the molecular excitonic lines and cutoff energies within each plateau scale linearly with the field strength amplitude. In contrast to atomic cases for the fullerene molecule, with the increase of the pump wave photon energy the cutoff harmonic energy is increased. We also show that with the…
The present work reports on the generation of short-pulse coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation of controlled polarization. The proposed strategy is based on high-order harmonics generated in pre-aligned molecules. Field-free molecular alignment produced by a short linearly-polarized infrared laser pulse is used to break the isotropy of a gas medium. Driving the aligned molecules by a circularly-polarized infrared pulse allows to transfer the anisotropy of the medium to the polarization of the generated harmonic light. The ellipticity of the latter is controlled by adjusting the angular distr…
We investigate the electron quantum path interference effects during high harmonic generation in atomic gas medium driven by ultrashort chirped laser pulses. To achieve that, we identify and vary the different experimentally relevant control parameters of such a driving laser pulse influencing the high harmonic spectra. Specifically, the impact of the pulse duration, peak intensity and instantaneous frequency is studied in a self-consistent manner based on Lewenstein formalism. Simulations involving macroscopic propagation effects are also considered. The study aims to reveal the microscopic b…
We investigate high-order harmonic generation in ZnO driven by linearly polarized multi-color pulses. It is shown that the intensities of the harmonics in the plateau region can be enhanced by two to three orders of magnitude when driven by two- or three-color fields as compared with the single-color pulse excitation. By analyzing the time-dependent population in the conduction band as function of both the initial and the moving crystal momenta, we demonstrate that this remarkable enhancement originates from the intraband preacceleration of electrons from their initial momenta to the top of th…
Intense extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses enable the investigation of XUV-induced nonlinear processes and are a prerequisite for the development of attosecond pump - attosecond probe experiments. While highly nonlinear processes in the XUV range have been studied at free-electron lasers (FELs), high-harmonic generation (HHG) has allowed the investigation of low-order nonlinear processes. Here we suggest a concept to optimize the HHG intensity, which surprisingly requires a scaling of the experimental parameters that differs substantially from optimizing the HHG pulse energy. As a result, we are…
Parametric amplification of attosecond coherent pulses around 100 eV at the single-atom level is demonstrated for the first time by using the 3D time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation in high-harmonic generation processes from excited states of He$^+$. We present the attosecond dynamics of the amplification process far from the ionization threshold and resolve the physics behind it. The amplification of a particular central photon energy requires the seed XUV pulses to be perfectly synchronized in time with the driving laser field for stimulated recombination to the He$^+$ ground state and is o…
High-harmonic generation in two-colour ($ω-2ω$) counter-rotating circularly polarised laser fields opens the path to generate isolated attosecond pulses and attosecond pulse trains with controlled ellipticity. The generated harmonics have alternating helicity, and the ellipticity of the generated attosecond pulse depends sensitively on the relative intensities of two adjacent, counter-rotating harmonic lines. For the $s$-type ground state, such as in Helium, the successive harmonics have nearly equal amplitude, yielding isolated attosecond pulses and attosecond pulse trains with linear polaris…
