We investigate the multi-electron dynamics in high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from N2 molecules. Clear spectral minima are observed in the cutoff region at all three mid-infrared wavelengths (i.e., 1300, 1400 and 1500 nm) chosen in our experiment. It is found that the positions of the spectral minima do not depend on the alignment angles of molecules. In addition, the spectral minima shift almost linearly with the increasing laser intensity at all three wavelengths, which provides a strong evidence on the dynamic multi-channel interference origin of these minima. The advantages of observation of dynamic multi-channel interference based on HHG driven by long wavelength lasers are discussed.
Ionization by relativistically intense laser pulses of finite duration is considered in the framework of strong-field quantum electrodynamics. Our main focus is on the formation of ionization supercontinua. More specifically, when studying the energy distributions of photoelectrons ionized by circularly polarized pulses, we observe the appearance of broad structures lacking the interference patterns. These supercontinua extend over hundreds of driving photon energies, thus corresponding to high-order nonlinear processes. The corresponding polar-angle distributions show asymmetries which are at…
Diatomic molecules (e.g., O$_2$) in intense laser field exhibit a peculiar suppressed ionization behavior compared to their companion atoms. Several physical models have been proposed to account for this suppression while no consensus has been achieved. In this letter, we aim to clarify the underlying mechanisms behind this molecular ionization suppression. Experimental data recorded at midinfrared laser wavelength and its comparison with that at near-infrared wavelength revealed a peculiar wavelength and intensity dependence of the suppressed ionization of O$_2$ with respect to its companion …
We experimentally investigate the generation of above-threshold harmonics completely from argon atoms on an excited state using mid-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. The highly nonlinear dependences of the observed signal on the pulse energy and polarization of the driver laser pulses indicate its non-perturbative characteristic.
We apply the time-dependent R-matrix method to investigate harmonic generation from Ne(+) at a wavelength of 390 nm and intensities up to 10(15) Wcm(-2). The 1s(2)2s(2)2p(4) (3)P(e), (1)D(e), and (1)S(e) states of Ne(2+) are included as residual-ion states to assess the influence of interference between photoionization channels associated with these thresholds. The harmonic spectrum is well approximated by calculations in which only the (3)P(e) and (1)D(e) thresholds are taken into account, but no satisfactory spectrum is obtained when a single threshold is taken into account. Within the harmo…
The theory of resonant Auger decay of atoms in a high intensity coherent X-ray pulse is presented. The theory includes the coupling between the ground state and the resonance due to an intense X-ray pulse, taking into account the decay of the resonance and the direct photoionization of the ground state, both populating the final ionic states coherently. The theory also considers the impact of the direct photoionization of the resonance state itself which typically populates highly-excited ionic states. The combined action of the resonant decay and of the direct ionization of the ground state i…
Intense, 100 fs laser pulses at 3.2 and 3.6 um are used to generate, by multi-photon ionization, broadband wave packets with up to 400 eV of kinetic energy and charge states up to Xe+6. The multiple ionization pathways are well described by a white electron wave packet and field-free inelastic cross sections, averaged over the intensity-dependent energy distribution for (e,ne) electron impact ionization. The analysis also suggests a contribution from a 4d core excitation in xenon.
The photoionization of a helium atom by short intense laser pulses is studied theoretically in the vicinity of the $2s2p\,^1P$ doubly-excited state with the intention to investigate the impact of the intensity and duration of the exciting pulse on the dynamics of the autoionization process. For that purpose, we solve numerically the corresponding time-dependent Schrödinger equation by applying the time-dependent restricted-active-space configuration-interaction method (TD-RASCI). The present numerical results clearly demonstrate that the Fano-interferences can be controlled by a single high-fr…
We report theoretical calculations of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of Xe with the inclusion of multi-electron effects and macroscopic propagation of the fundamental and harmonic fields in an ionizing medium. By using the time-frequency analysis we show that the reshaping of the fundamental laser field is responsible for the continuum structure in the HHG spectra. We further suggest a method for obtaining an isolated attosecond pulse (IAP) by using a filter centered on axis to select the harmonics in the far field with different divergence. We also discuss the carrier-envelope-phase dep…
The dynamics of atomic levels resonantly coupled by a coherent and intense short high-frequency laser pulse is discussed and it is advocated that this dynamics is sensitively probed by measuring the spectra of the particles emitted. It is demonstrated that the time-envelope of this laser pulse gives rise to two waves emitted with a time delay with respect to each other at the rising and falling sides of the pulse, which interfere in the time domain. By computing numerically and analyzing explicitly analytically a show-case example of sequential two-photon ionization of an atom by resonant lase…
The time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the hydrogen atom and its interaction with coherent intense high-frequency short laser pulses is solved numerically exactly by propagating the single-electron wave packets. Thereby, the wavefunction is followed in space and time for times longer than the pulse duration. Results are explicitly shown for 3 and 10 fs pulses. Particular attention is paid to identifying the effect of dynamic interference of photoelectrons emitted with the same kinetic energy at different times during the rising and falling sides of the pulse predicted in [\emph{Ph.V. Deme…
We present experimental results showing the appearance of a near-continuum in the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) spectra of atomic and molecular species as the driving laser intensity of an infrared pulse increases. Detailed macroscopic simulations reveal that these near-continuum spectra are capable of producing IAPs in the far field if a proper spatial filter is applied. Further, our simulations show that the near-continuum spectra and the IAPs are a product of strong temporal and spatial reshaping (blue shift and defocusing) of the driving field. This offers a possibility of producing…
The dissociative ionization of H2+ interacting with intense, femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet laser pulses is investigated theoretically. This is done by numerical propagation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a colinear one-dimensional model of H2+, with electronic and nuclear motion treated exactly within the limitations of the model. The joint-energy spectra (JES) are extracted for the fragmented electron and nuclei by means of the t-SURFF method. The dynamic interference effect, which was first observed in one-electron atomic systems, is in the present work observed for H2+, em…
We investigate electron-positron pair creation in the interaction of a nuclear Coulomb field and a highly intense two-mode laser field. For bichromatic laser fields, we examine the differences arising for commensurable and incommensurable frequencies in a continuous variation of the laser frequency ratio and the quantum interference effects, which may occur in the commensurable case. We show that the interference manifests in the angular distributions and the total pair-production rates of the created particles. Additionally, by varying the amplitudes of the two modes we study pair creation in…
Coherent nonlinear spectroscopies and imaging in the X-ray domain provide direct insight into the coupled motions of electrons and nuclei with resolution on the electronic length and time scale. The experimental realization of such techniques will strongly benefit from access to intense, coherent pairs of femtosecond X-ray pulses. We have observed phase-stable X-ray pulse pairs containing more thank 3 x 10e7 photons at 5.9 keV (2.1 Angstrom) with about 1 fs duration and 2-5 fs separation. The highly directional pulse pairs are manifested by interference fringes in the superfluorescent and seed…
A novel and universal interference structure is found in the photoelectron momentum distribution of atoms in intense infrared laser field. Theoretical analysis shows that this structure can be attributed to a new form of Coulomb-field-driven backward-scattering of photoelectrons in the direction perpendicular to the laser field, in contrast to the conventional rescattering along the laser polarization direction. This transverse backward-scattering process is closely related to a family of photoelectrons initially ionized within a time interval of less than 200 attosecond around the crest of th…
This paper concerns the theory of non-recollisional ionization or detachment of atoms or ions by intense few-cycle pulses. It is shown that in certain conditions of pulse duration, peak intensity and carrier-envelope phase, the ionization probability integrated over ejection angle varies almost periodically with energy, with a period roughly equal to the photon energy for slow enough outgoing electrons. This modulation is found both in calculations based on the strong field approximation (SFA) and in ab initio time-dependent calculations. It is explained as resulting from the interference betw…
In this paper, the spontaneous bremsstrahlung emission from an electron scattered by two fixed nuclei in an intense laser field is investigated in details based upon the Volkov state and the Dirac-Volkov propagator. It has been found that the fundamental harmonic spectrum from the electron radiation exhibits distinctive fringes, which is dependent not only upon the internucleus distance and orientation, but also upon the initial energy of the electron and the laser intensity. By analyzing the differential cross section, we are able to explain these effects in terms of interference among the el…
We have investigated the ionization of the H atom by intense few-cycle laser pulses, in particular the intra-pulse interference effects, and their dependence on the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the laser pulse. In the final momentum distribution of the continuum electrons the imprint of two types of intra-pulse interference effects can be observed, namely the temporal and spatial interference. During the spatial interference electronic wave packets emitted at the same time, but following different paths interfere leading to an interference pattern measurable in the electron spectra. This ca…
Ionization of hydrogen-like ions by intense, circularly polarized laser pulses is analyzed under the scope of the relativistic strong-field approximation. We show that, for specific parameters of the laser field, the energy spectra of photoelectrons present a broad region without interference (supercontinuum) which can be controlled by modifying the laser field intensity. The physical interpretation of the process is developed according to the Keldysh theory, emphasizing the importance of the complex-time saddle point contributions to the total probability of photoionization. The corresponding…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of phase-dependent interference effects in multi-photon excitation under bichromatic radio-frequency (rf) field. Using an intense rf pulse, we study the interference between the three-photon and one-photon transition between the Zeeman sub-levels of the ground state of $^{87}$Rb that allows us to determine the carrier-envelope phase of the fields even for long pulses.
The ionization of an atom by a high-frequency intense laser pulse, where the energy of a single-photon is sufficient to ionize the system, is investigated from first principles. It is shown that as a consequence of an AC Stark effect in the continuum, the energy of the photoelectron follows the envelope of the laser pulse. This is demonstrated to result in strong dynamic interference of the photoelectrons of the same kinetic energy emitted at different times. Numerically exact computations on the hydrogen atom demonstrate that the dynamic interference spectacularly modifies the photoionization…
Via a non-perturbative method we study the population dynamics and photoelectron spectra of Cs atoms subject to intense chirped laser pulses, with gaussian beams. We include above threshold ionization spectral peaks. The frequency of the laser is near resonance with the 6s-7p transition. Dominant couplings are included exactly, weaker ones accounted for perturbatively. We calculate the relevant transition matrix elements, including spin-orbit coupling. The pulse is taken to be a hyperbolic secant in time and the chirping a hyperbolic tangent. This choice allows the equations of motions for the…
We investigate high-order harmonic spectra from aligned diatomic molecules in intense driving fields whose components have orthogonal polarizations. We focus on how the driving-field ellipticity influences structural interference patterns in a macroscopic medium. In a previous publication [Phys. Rev. A 88, 023404 (2013)] we have shown that the non-vanishing ellipticity introduces an effective dynamic shift in the angle for which the two-center interference maxima and minima occur, with regard to the existing condition for linearly polarized fields. In this work we show through simulation that …
Photoelectron energy spectra resulting by the interaction of hydrogen with two short pulses having carrier frequencies, respectively, in the range of the infrared and XUV regions have been calculated. The effects of the pulse duration and timing of the X-ray pulse on the photoelectron energy spectra are discussed. Analysis of the spectra obtained for very long pulses show that certain features may be explained in terms of quantum interferences in the time domain. It is found that, depending on the duration of the X-ray pulse, ripples in the energy spectra separated by the infrared photon energ…
Ionization of atoms and molecules in laser fields can lead to various interesting interference structures in the photoelectron spectrum. For the case of a super-intense extreme ultraviolet laser pulse, we identify a novel petal-like interference structure in the electron momentum distribution along the direction of the laser field propagation. We show that this structure is quite general and can be attributed to the Fresnel diffraction of the electronic wavepacket by the nucleus. Our results are demonstrated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation of the atomic hydrogen …
Atomic ionization by intense mid-infrared (mid-IR) pulses produces low electron energy features that the strong-field approximation, which is expected to be valid in the tunneling ionization regime characterized by small Keldysh parameters ($γ\ll 1$), cannot describe. These features include the low-energy structure (LES), the very-low-energy structure (VLES), and the more recently found zero-energy structure (ZES). They result from the interplay between the laser electric field and the atomic Coulomb field which controls the low-energy spectrum also for small $γ$. In the present joint experime…
The creation of electron-positron pairs by the strong-field Breit-Wheeler process in intense short laser pulses is investigated in the framework of laser-dressed quantum electrodynamics. Regarding laser field parameters in the multiphoton regime, special attention is brought to the energy spectrum of the created particles, which can be reproduced and explained by means of an intuitive model. The model is based on the probabilities of multiphoton events driven by the spectral components of the laser pulse. It allows, in particular, to identify interferences between different pair production cha…
We use three dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation (3D--TDSE) to calculate angular electron momentum distributions and photoelectron spectra of atoms driven by spatially inhomogeneous fields. An example for such inhomogeneous fields is the locally enhanced field induced by resonant plasmons, appearing at surfaces of metallic nanoparticles, nanotips and gold bow-tie shape nanostructures. Our studies show that the inhomogeneity of the laser electric field plays an important role in the above threshold ionization process in the tunneling regime, causing significant modifications to the …
The intensity-dependent resonance-like enhancement phenomenon in high-order above-threshold ionization spectrum is a typical quantum effect for atoms or molecules in the intense laser field, which has not been well understood. The calculations of TDSE are in remarkable agreement with the experimental data, but they can not clarify the contributions of the bound states. The semi-classical approach of strong field approximation, in which no excited states are involved, can obtain the similar phenomenon, but the laser intensities of enhanced regions predicted by SFA are inconsistent with the resu…
The interaction of intense mid-infrared laser fields with atoms and molecules leads to a range of new opportunities, from the production of bright, coherent radiation in the soft x-ray range to imaging molecular structures and dynamics with attosecond temporal and sub-angstrom spatial resolution. However, all these effects, which rely on laser-driven recollision of an electron removed by the strong laser field and the parent ion, suffer from the rapidly increasing role of the magnetic field component of the driving pulse: the associated Lorentz force pushes the electrons off course in their ex…
Strong-field physics is currently experiencing a shift towards the use of mid-IR driving wavelengths. This is because they permit conducting experiments unambiguously in the quasi-static regime and enable exploiting the effects related to ponderomotive scaling of electron recollisions. Initial measurements taken in the mid-IR immediately led to a deeper understanding of photo-ionization and allowed a discrimination amongst different theoretical models. Ponderomotive scaling of rescattering has enabled new avenues towards time resolved probing of molecular structure. Essential for this paradigm…
We describe phase-dependent wavelength scaling of high-order harmonic generation efficiency driven by ultra-short laser fields in the mid-infrared. We employ both numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the Strong Field Approximation to analyze the fine-scale oscillations in the harmonic yield in the context of channel-closing effects. We show, by varying the carrier-envelope phase, that the amplitude of these oscillations depend strongly on the number of returning electron trajectories. Furthermore, the peak positions of the oscillations vary significantly as a funct…
A way to considerably enhance terahertz radiation, emitted in the interaction of intense mid-infrared laser pulses with atomic gases, in both the total energy and the electric-field amplitude is suggested. The scheme is based on the application of a two-color field consisting of a strong circularly polarized mid-infrared pulse with wavelengths of $1.6÷4\,μ{\rm m}$ and its linearly or circularly polarized second harmonic of lower intensity. By combining the strong-field approximation for the ionization of a single atom with particle-in-cell simulations of the collective dynamics of the generate…
We investigate the influence of intense, elliptically polarized driving fields on high-order harmonic spectra from aligned diatomic molecules. We derive a generalized two-center interference condition for elliptically polarized fields, which accounts for s-p mixing and the orbital symmetry, within the strong-field and the single-active electron approximation. We show that the non-vanishing ellipticity introduces an effective dynamic shift in the angle for which the two-center interference maxima and minima occur, with regard to the existing condition for linearly polarized fields. This shift d…
Using the frequency-domain theory, the high-order above threshold ionization (HATI) of a molecule is treated as a two-step transition: an above threshold ionization (ATI) followed by a laser-assisted collision (LAC). It is found that the HATI spectrum carries three pieces of information: the fingerprint of the molecular wave function lying in the ATI transition, the geometry structure of the molecule lying in the potential scattering between two plane waves, and the interaction between the ionized electron and the laser field lying in a phase factor in the LAC transition, where the phase facto…
Multiphoton detachment of F$^-$ by strong few-cycle laser pulses was studied by Shearer and Monteith using a Keldysh-type approach [Phys. Rev. A 88, 033415 (2013)]. We believe that this work contained errors in the calculation of the detachment amplitude and photoelectron spectra. We describe the necessary corrections to the theory and show that the results, in particular, the interference features of the photoelectron spectra, appear noticeably different.
We present a new theory that the molecular high order harmonic generation in an intense laser field is determined by molecular internal symmetry and momentum distribution of the tunneling-ionized electron. The molecular internal symmetry determines the quantum interference form of the returning electron inside the molecule. The electron momentum distribution determines the relative interference strength of each individual electron de Broglie wave. All individual electron de Broglie wave interferences add together to collectively modulate the molecular high harmonic generation. We specifically …
