Diatomic molecules (e.g., O$_2$) in intense laser field exhibit a peculiar suppressed ionization behavior compared to their companion atoms. Several physical models have been proposed to account for this suppression while no consensus has been achieved. In this letter, we aim to clarify the underlying mechanisms behind this molecular ionization suppression. Experimental data recorded at midinfrared laser wavelength and its comparison with that at near-infrared wavelength revealed a peculiar wavelength and intensity dependence of the suppressed ionization of O$_2$ with respect to its companion atom of Xe, while N$_2$ behaves like a structureless atom. It is found that the S-matrix theory calculation can reproduce well the experimental observations and unambiguously identifies the significant role of two-center interference effect in the ionization suppression of O$_2$.
In present paper we develop an analytic theory for the harmonic generation of symmetric diatomic molecular ions beyond two-level model, emphasizing the influence of charge-resonance (CR) states those are strongly coupled to electromagnetic fields for large internuclear distance. With taking into account the continuum states that is ignored in the two-level model and become important for intense laser case, our model is capable to produce spectrum for the whole range of harmonic orders consisting of a molecular plateau due to the CR transition and an atomic-like plateau for a long-wavelength ex…
We present an implementation of a time-dependent multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (TD-MCSCF) method [R. Anzaki et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 19, 22008 (2017)] with the full configuration interaction expansion for coupled electron-nuclear dynamics in diatomic molecules subject to a strong laser field. In this method, the total wave function is expressed as a superposition of different configurations constructed from time-dependent electronic Slater determinants and time-dependent orthonormal nuclear basis functions. The primitive basis functions of nuclei and electrons are strictly in…
Non-resonant light interacting with diatomics via the polarizability anisotropy couples different rotational states and may lead to strong hybridization of the motion. The modification of shape resonances and low-energy scattering states due to this interaction can be fully captured by an asymptotic model, based on the long-range properties of the scattering [Crubellier et al. arXiv:1412.0569]. Remarkably, the properties of the field-dressed shape resonances in this asymptotic multi-channel description are found to be approximately linear in the field intensity up to fairly large intensity. Th…
A way to considerably enhance terahertz radiation, emitted in the interaction of intense mid-infrared laser pulses with atomic gases, in both the total energy and the electric-field amplitude is suggested. The scheme is based on the application of a two-color field consisting of a strong circularly polarized mid-infrared pulse with wavelengths of $1.6÷4\,μ{\rm m}$ and its linearly or circularly polarized second harmonic of lower intensity. By combining the strong-field approximation for the ionization of a single atom with particle-in-cell simulations of the collective dynamics of the generate…
We derive a universal model for atom pairs interacting with non-resonant light via the polarizability anisotropy, based on the long range properties of the scattering. The corresponding dynamics can be obtained using a nodal line technique to solve the asymptotic Schrödinger equation. It consists in imposing physical boundary conditions at long range and vanishing of the wavefunction at a position separating inner zone and asymptotic region. We show that nodal lines which depend on the intensity of the non-resonant light can satisfactorily account for the effect of the polarizability at short …
We investigate electron correlation effects in internuclear-distance-dependent enhanced ionization of $\mathrm{H}_2$, $\mathrm{LiH}$, and $\mathrm{HF}$ molecules by intense near-infrared laser pulses using a 3D description of the systems with the time-dependent generalized-active-space configuration-interaction method. This method systematically incorporates electron-electron correlation of the quantum many-electron system under consideration. Our correlated description of diatomic molecules shows that enhanced ionization occurs at certain critical internuclear separations and electron correla…
In this work we report ab initio calculations for the $H_2^+$ molecule interacting with ultrashort intense laser pulses. We analyse several observables that can, in principle, be available experimentally, in order to get a deeper understanding of the strong field molecular dynamics. In particular, we will focus our attention to the interplay between electronic and nuclear dynamics and how the two motions are correlated. We have extended the Resolvent Technique to molecules and we have extracted the correlated energy spectra in different regimes of ionization: from the perturbative regime to th…
Using a three-dimensional quasiclassical technique we explore the double ionization pathways of a diatomic molecule driven by an intense infrared (800nm) ultrashort laser pulse. For intensities corresponding to the tunneling regime, we find that the three main ionization mechanisms have distinct traces when considering the sum of the momenta parallel to the laser field as a function of the inter-electronic angle of escape. In addition, we find that the previously observed "finger-like" structure in the correlated momenta of the strongly driven He is also present for strongly driven diatomic mo…
A model based on the strong-field and Born-Oppenheimer approximations qualitatively describes the distribution over vibrational states formed in a diatomic molecular ion following ionization of the neutral molecule by intense laser pulses. Good agreement is found with a recent experiment [X. Urbain et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 163004 (2004)]. In particular, the observed deviation from a Franck-Condon-like distribution is reproduced. Additionally, we demonstrate control of the vibrational distribution by a variation of the peak intensity or a change of frequency of the laser pulse.
We analyze the imprint of nodal planes in high-order harmonic spectra from aligned diatomic molecules in intense laser fields whose components exhibit orthogonal polarizations. We show that the typical suppression in the spectra associated to nodal planes is distorted, and that this distortion can be employed to map the electron's angle of return to its parent ion. This investigation is performed semi-analytically at the single-molecule response and single-active orbital level, using the strong-field approximation and the steepest descent method. We show that the velocity form of the dipole op…
We investigate high-order harmonic spectra from aligned diatomic molecules in intense driving fields whose components have orthogonal polarizations. We focus on how the driving-field ellipticity influences structural interference patterns in a macroscopic medium. In a previous publication [Phys. Rev. A 88, 023404 (2013)] we have shown that the non-vanishing ellipticity introduces an effective dynamic shift in the angle for which the two-center interference maxima and minima occur, with regard to the existing condition for linearly polarized fields. In this work we show through simulation that …
The generation of high harmonics (HHG) in atomic systems by the highly non-linear response to an intense laser field is a prominent pathway to the synthesis of ever shorter laser pulses at increasingly higher photon energies. Extensions of this process to molecules add to the complexity but also offers novel opportunities as multi-center effects and the coupling to nuclear degrees of freedom can influence HHG. In this work we theoretically explore the impact of coherent vibronic excitations of diatomic molecules on the HHG spectrum within the framework of time-dependent density functional theo…
Strong field photoemission and electron recollision provide a viable route to extract electronic and nuclear dynamics from molecular targets with attosecond temporal resolution. However, since an {\em ab-initio} treatment of even the simplest diatomic systems is beyond today's capabilities approximate qualitative descriptions are warranted. In this paper, we develop such a theoretical approach to model the photoelectrons resulting from intense laser-molecule interaction. We present a general theory for symmetric diatomic molecules in the single active electron approximation that, amongst other…
We investigate the influence of intense, elliptically polarized driving fields on high-order harmonic spectra from aligned diatomic molecules. We derive a generalized two-center interference condition for elliptically polarized fields, which accounts for s-p mixing and the orbital symmetry, within the strong-field and the single-active electron approximation. We show that the non-vanishing ellipticity introduces an effective dynamic shift in the angle for which the two-center interference maxima and minima occur, with regard to the existing condition for linearly polarized fields. This shift d…
Calculating the energy absorption of atomic clusters as a function of the laser pulse length $T$ we find a maximum for a critical $T^*$. We show that $T^*$ can be linked to an optimal cluster radius $R^*$. The existence of this radius can be attributed to the enhanced ionization mechanism originally discovered for diatomic molecules. Our findings indicate that enhanced ionization should be operative for a wide class of rare gas clusters. From a simple Coulomb explosion ansatz, we derive an analytical expression relating the maximum energy release to a suitably scaled expansion time which can b…
We simulate the dynamics of H2+ and HD+ by direct solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for the electronic and nuclear motion for the interaction of intense femtosecond pulses. On these timescales the rotational motion, even for such light molecules, is frozen. Therefore it is a reasonable assumption that the nuclear alignment is fixed during the pulse interaction and that rotation can be neglected. In terms of vibrational relaxation, and since the nuclei are light, vibration will be important over femtosecond timescales. Although homonuclear diatomics are IR-inactive, in an int…
The capability of generating two intense, femtosecond x-ray pulses with controlled time delay opens the possibility of performing time-resolved experiments for x-ray induced phenomena. We have applied this capability to study the photoinduced dynamics in diatomic molecules. In molecules composed of low-Z elements, \textit{K}-shell ionization creates a core-hole state in which the main decay mode is an Auger process involving two electrons in the valence shell. After Auger decay, the nuclear wavepackets of the transient two-valence-hole states continue evolving on the femtosecond timescale, lea…
In this work we develop an approach for a molecular hydrogen ion (H2+) in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation while exposed to intense short-pulse radiation. Our starting point is the R-Matrix incorporating Time (RMT) formulation for atomic hydrogen [L. A. A. Nikolopoulos et al, Phys. Rev. A 78, 063420 (2008)] which has proven to be successful at treating multi-electron atomic systems efficiently and to high accuracy [L. R. Moore et al J. Mod. Opt. 58,1132, (2011)]. The present study on H2+ has been performed with a similar objective of developing an ab initio method for solving the Time-depend…
A theoretical study of the intense-field single ionization of molecular hydrogen or deuterium oriented either parallel or perpendicular to a linear polarized laser pulse (400 nm) is performed for different internuclear separations and pulse lengths in an intensity range of $(2-13)\times10^{13} $W cm$^{-2}$. The investigation is based on a non-perturbative treatment that solves the full time-dependent Schrödinger equation of both correlated electrons within the fixed-nuclei and the dipole approximation. The results for various internuclear separations are used to obtain the ionization yields of…
When a diatomic molecule is ionized by an intense laser field, the ionization rate depends very strongly on the inter-nuclear separation. That dependence exhibits a pronounced maximum at the inter-nuclear separation known as the critical distance. This phenomenon was first demonstrated theoretically in H2+ and became known as charge-resonance enhanced ionization (CREI, in reference to a proposed physical mechanism) or simply enhanced ionisation (EI). All theoretical models of this phenomenon predict a double-peak structure in the R-dependent ionization rate of H2+. However, such double-peak st…
We study the formation of the RbCs molecule by an intense laser pulse using nonlinear dynamics. Under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, the system is modeled by a two degree of freedom rovibrational Hamiltonian, which includes the ground electronic potential energy curve of the diatomic molecule and the interaction of the molecular polarizability with the electric field of the laser. As the laser intensity increases, we observe that the formation probability first increases and then decreases after reaching a maximum. We show that the analysis can be simplified to the investigation of the lo…
