The interaction of relativistically strong tailored laser pulses with an atomic system is considered. Due to a special tailoring of the laser pulse, the suppression of the relativistic drift of the ionized electron and a dramatic enhancement of the rescattering probability is shown to be achievable. The high harmonic generation rate in the relativistic regime is calculated and shown to be increased by several orders of magnitude compared to the case of conventional laser pulses. The energies of the revisiting electron at the atomic core can approach the MeV domain, thus rendering hard x-ray harmonics and nuclear reactions with single atoms feasible.
We present efficient high-order harmonic generation (HHG) based on a high-repetition rate, few-cycle, near infrared (NIR), carrier-envelope phase stable, optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA), emitting 6fs pulses with 9μJ pulse energy at 200kHz repetition rate. In krypton, we reach conversion efficiencies from the NIR to the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation pulse energy on the order of ~10^{-6} with less than 3μJ driving pulse energy. This is achieved by optimizing the OPCPA for a spatially and temporally clean pulse and by a specially designed high-pressure gas target. In the …
The ongoing development of intense high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources has recently enabled highly nonlinear ionization of atoms by the absorption of at least 10 extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) photons within a single atom [Senfftleben \textit{et al.}, arXiv1911.01375]. Here we investigate the role that reshaping of the fundamental, few-cycle, near-infrared (NIR) driving laser within the 30-cm-long HHG Xe medium plays in the generation of the intense HHG pulses. Using an incident NIR intensity that is higher than what is required for phase-matched HHG, signatures of reshaping are found by measuri…
High Harmonic Generation (HHG) creates coherent high frequency radiation via the process of strong field ionization followed by recombination. Recently, a complementary approach based on Frustrated Tunnel Ionization (FTI) was demonstrated (Nature Photonics 12, 620 (2018)). It uses spectrally separated peaks created by lower quantum number Rydberg states to produce coherent extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light. While much is understood about enhancing emission from HHG by controlling recombining electron trajectories, relatively little is known about controlling the quantum number distribution of Ry…
We study the higher-harmonic generation (HHG) using elliptically polarized two-color driving fields. The HHG via bi-chromatic counter-rotating laser fields is a promising source of circularly polarized ultrashort XUV radiation at the attosecond time scale. The ellipticity or the polarization of the attosecond pulses can be tweaked by modifying the emitted harmonics' ellipticity, which can be controlled by varying the driver fields. We propose a simple setup to control the polarization of the driving fields, which eventually changes the ellipticity of the attosecond pulses. A well-defined scali…
Intense extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses enable the investigation of XUV-induced nonlinear processes and are a prerequisite for the development of attosecond pump - attosecond probe experiments. While highly nonlinear processes in the XUV range have been studied at free-electron lasers (FELs), high-harmonic generation (HHG) has allowed the investigation of low-order nonlinear processes. Here we suggest a concept to optimize the HHG intensity, which surprisingly requires a scaling of the experimental parameters that differs substantially from optimizing the HHG pulse energy. As a result, we are…
High-harmonic generation (HHG) is widely used for up-conversion of amplified (near) infrared ultrafast laser pulses to short wavelengths. We demonstrate that Ramsey-comb spectroscopy, based on two such pulses derived from a frequency-comb laser, enables us to observe phase effects in this process with a few mrad precision. As a result, we could perform the most accurate spectroscopic measurement based on light from HHG, illustrated with a determination of the $5p^6 \rightarrow 5p^5 8s~^2[3/2]_1$ transition at 110 nm in $^{132}$Xe. We improve its relative accuracy $10^4$ times to a value of $2.…

Advancing table-top attosecond sources in brightness and pulse duration is of immense interest and importance for an expanding sphere of applications. Recent theoretical studies [New J. Phys., 22 093030 (2020)] have found that high-order frequency mixing (HFM) in a two-color laser field can be much more efficient than high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Here we study the attosecond properties of the coherent XUV generated via HFM analytically and numerically, focusing on the practically important case when one of the fields has much lower frequency and much lower intensity than the other one…
We introduce high-harmonic sideband spectroscopy (HHSS) and show that it can be a robust probe of attosecond charge migration (CM) in a halogenated carbon-chain molecule. We simulate both the CM and harmonic-generation (HHG) dynamics using ab initio time-dependent density-functional theory. We find that CM dynamics initiated along the molecular backbone induces sidebands in the HHG spectrum driven by a delayed laser pulse that is polarized perpendicular to the molecular axis. Monitoring the spectrum as either the HHG laser frequency or the relative delay is scanned allows for the extraction of…
Attosecond Pulse Trains (APT) generated by high-harmonic generation (HHG) of high-intensity near-infrared (IR) laser pulses have proven valuable for studying the electronic dynamics of atomic and molecular species. However, the high intensities required for high-photon-energy, high-flux HHG usually limit the class of adequate laser systems to repetition rates below 10~kHz. Here, APT's generated from the 100 kHz, 160 W, 40 fs laser system (HR1) of the Extreme Light Infrastructure Attosecond Light Pulse Source (ELI-ALPS) are reconstructed using the Reconstruction of Attosecond Beating By Interfe…
The generation of high harmonics (HHG) in atomic systems by the highly non-linear response to an intense laser field is a prominent pathway to the synthesis of ever shorter laser pulses at increasingly higher photon energies. Extensions of this process to molecules add to the complexity but also offers novel opportunities as multi-center effects and the coupling to nuclear degrees of freedom can influence HHG. In this work we theoretically explore the impact of coherent vibronic excitations of diatomic molecules on the HHG spectrum within the framework of time-dependent density functional theo…
Non-adiabatic photo-ionization is difficult to control as it relies on the derivatives of the envelope and not on phase-details of the short ionizing pulse. Here, we introduce a catalyzing state, whose presence render non-adiabatic ionization sensitive to phase-details of tailored pulses. Since a catalyzing state is in general easy to create, this opens a perspective for coherent control of ultra-fast ionization.
We report on a compact and spectrally intense extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) source, which is based on high-harmonic generation (HHG) driven by 395 nm pulses. In order to minimize the XUV virtual source size and to maximize the XUV flux, HHG is performed several Rayleigh lengths away from the driving laser focal plane in a high-density gas jet. As a result, a high focused XUV intensity of $5 \times 10^{13}$ W/cm$^2$ is achieved, using a beamline with a length of only two meters and a modest driving laser pulse energy of 3 mJ. The high XUV intensity is demonstrated by performing a nonlinear ionizati…
We study high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from aligned molecules in strong elliptically polarized laser fields numerically and analytically. Our simulations show that the spectra and polarization of HHG depend strongly on the molecular alignment and the laser ellipticity. In particular, for small laser ellipticity, large ellipticity of harmonics with high intensity is observed for parallel alignment, with forming a striking ellipticity hump around the threshold. We show that the interplay of the molecular structure and two-dimensional electron motion plays an important role here. This phen…
Photoinduced quantum dynamics in molecules have hierarchical temporal structures with different energy scales that are associated with electron and nuclear motions. Femtosecond-to-attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) using high-harmonic generation (HHG) with a photon energy below 300 eV has been a powerful tool to observe such electron and nuclear dynamics in a table-top manner. However, comprehensive measurements of the electronic, vibrational, and rotational molecular dynamics have not yet been achieved. Here, we demonstrate HHG-based TAS at the nitrogen K-edge (400 eV) for the…
