We argue that under certain assumptions the quantum break time approach and the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture both lead to de Sitter swampland constraints of the same functional form. It is a well known fact that the quantum energy-momentum tensor in the Bunch-Davies vacuum computed in the static patch of dS breaks some of the isometries. Proposing that this is a manifestation of quantum breaking of dS, we analyze some of its consequences. In particular, this leads to a thermal matter component that can be generalized to string theory in an obvious way. Imposing a censorship of quantum breaking, we recover the no eternal inflation bound in the low temperature regime, while the stronger bound from the dS swampland conjecture follows under a few reasonable assumptions about the still mysterious, presumably topological, high-temperature regime of string theory.
We discuss under which conditions multi-field cold and warm inflationary models with canonical kinetic energy terms are compatible with the swampland conjectures about the emergence of de Sitter solutions in string theory. We find that under quite general conditions the slow-roll conditions for multi-field cold inflation are at odds with the swampland conjectures for an arbitrary number of scalar fields driving inflation. However, slow-roll conditions can be reconciled with the swampland conjectures in the strong dissipative regime of warm inflation.
We argue that, in the presence of time-dependent fluxes and quantum corrections, four-dimensional de Sitter solutions should appear in the type IIB string landscape and not in the swampland. Our construction considers generic choices of local and non-local quantum terms and satisfies the no-go and the swampland criteria, the latter being recently upgraded using the trans-Planckian cosmic censorship. Interestingly, both time-independent Newton constant and moduli stabilization may be achieved in such backgrounds even in the presence of time-dependent fluxes and internal spaces. However, once th…
Recently a swampland criterion has been proposed that rules out de Sitter vacua in string theory. Such a criterion should hold at all points in the field space and especially at points where the system is on-shell. However there has not been any attempt to examine the swampland criterion against explicit equations of motion. In this paper we study four-dimensional de Sitter and quasi-de Sitter solutions using dimensionally reduced M-theory. While on one hand all classical sources that could allow for solutions with de Sitter isometries are ruled out, the quantum corrections, on the other hand,…
Among Swampland conditions, the distance conjecture characterizes the geometry of scalar fields and the de Sitter conjecture constrains allowed potentials on it. We point out a connection between the distance conjecture and a refined version of the de Sitter conjecture in any parametrically controlled regime of string theory by using Bousso's covariant entropy bound. The refined version turns out to evade all counter-examples at scalar potential maxima that have been raised. We comment on the relation of our result to the Dine-Seiberg problem.
Motivated by the coincidence of scrambling time in de Sitter and maximum lifetime given by the $\textit{Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture}$ (TCC), we study the relation between the de Sitter complementarity and the Swampland conditions. We study thermalization in de Sitter space from different perspectives and show that TCC implies de Sitter space cannot live long enough to be considered a thermal background. We also revisit $α$-vacua in light of this work and show that TCC imposes multiple initial condition/fine-tuning problems on any conventional inflationary scenario.
We study aspects of anti-de Sitter space in the context of the Swampland. In particular, we conjecture that the near-flat limit of pure AdS belongs to the Swampland, as it is necessarily accompanied by an infinite tower of light states. The mass of the tower is power-law in the cosmological constant, with a power of $\frac{1}{2}$ for the supersymmetric case. We discuss relations between this behaviour and other Swampland conjectures such as the censorship of an unbounded number of massless fields, and the refined de Sitter conjecture. Moreover, we propose that changes to the AdS radius have an…
We interpret the de Sitter swampland conjecture in the thermodynamic point of view. When the number of degrees of freedom is enhanced as the modulus rolls down the potential, the bound on $m_{\rm Pl} \nabla V/V$ is equivalent to the condition for the positive temperature phase. The boundary between the positive- and the negative temperature phases is preferred by the classical system since the entropy density is maximized. The distance conjecture imposes that (quasi-)de Sitter spacetime is entirely in the negative temperature phase and statistically disfavored. By investigating the concave pot…
We discuss the de Sitter swampland and trans-Planckian censorship conjectures (TCC) from the entropy bound with quantum corrections, namely quantum version of Bousso bound and energy conditions. We include the typical contributions from the entanglement entropy in quasi-de Sitter spacetime. The TCC is not much corrected, whereas the bounds on de Sitter swampland conjecture from energy conditions can be relaxed due to quantum corrections.
Realising de Sitter vacua in string theory is challenging. For this reason it has been conjectured that de Sitter vacua inhabit the Swampland of inconsistent low-energy effective theories coupled to gravity. Since de Sitter is an attractor for $Λ$CDM, the conjecture calls $Λ$CDM into question. Reality appears sympathetic to this idea as local measurements of the Hubble constant $H_0$ are also at odds with $Λ$CDM analysis of Planck data. This tension suggests that the de Sitter state is unstable, thereby implying a turning point in the Hubble parameter. We present a model relieving this tension…
The methods of supergravity allow us to derive a multi-field F-term potential. Using this, we denote a generic and non-positive single-field F-term potential. We insert our theory into the scalar-gravity part of the $SU(2,1|1)$ invariant superconformal action. That action leads us to a de Sitter solution at the inflationary trajectory. One can denote stabilization of fields in terms of the Kähler kinetic terms and single-field slow-roll inflation parameters. We combine these with the de Sitter swampland conjecture to generate a bounded conjecture. This approach allowed us to show that the sing…
Recent studies show that there is tension between the de Sitter swampland conjectures proposed by Obeid, et al. and inflationary cosmology. In this paper, we consider an alternative to inflation, `tachyacoustic' cosmology, in light of swampland conjectures. In tachyacoustic models, primordial perturbations are generated by a period of superluminal sound speed instead of accelerating expansion. We show that realizations of tachyacoustic Lagrangians can be consistent with the de Sitter swampland conjectures, and therefore can in principle be consistent with a UV-complete theory. We derive a gene…
We present a proposal to relate the de Sitter Conjecture (dSC) to the Covariant Entropy Bound (CEB). By assuming an early phase of accelerated expansion where the CEB is satisfied, we take into account a contribution from extra-dimensions to the four-dimensional entropy which restricts the values of the usual slow-roll parameters. We show in this context that the dSC inequalities follow from the CEB -- including their mutual exclusion -- in both single and multi-field inflationary scenarios. We also observe that the order one constants, c and c' in the conjecture are given in terms of physical…
In this paper we propose a quantum version of the swampland conjecture. We argue that quantum instabilities of de Sitter space discovered using field theoretical methods, are directly related to the difficulties in finding stringy de Sitter vacua.
The relation between confinement scale $Λ_c$ of a gauge theory and the Hubble scale $H$ of the background quasi de Sitter space, required to satisfy the Festina Lente criteria ($Λ_c \gtrsim H$) from swampland principles, are investigated for a holographic theory using the Karch-Randall setup. A purely gravitational description admits unstable de Sitter extremum, and the requirement of Festina Lente translates into requirements of a perturbative gravitational dual, but prohibits an arbitrarily small hierarchy for other parameters fixed. With an additional scalar sector, the theory admits metast…
We show that one can find de Sitter critical points (saddle points) in models of flux compactification of Type IIB String Theory without any uplifting terms and in the presence of several moduli. We demonstrate this by giving explicit examples following some of the ideas recently presented by Conlon in [1], as well as more generic situations where one can violate the strong form of the de Sitter Swampland Conjecture. We stabilize the complex structure and the dilaton with fluxes, and we introduce a racetrack potential that fixes the Kähler moduli. The resultant potentials generically exhibit d…
A new swampland criterion has recently been proposed. As a consequence, it forbids the existence of de Sitter solutions in a low energy effective theory of a quantum gravity. However, there exist classical de Sitter solutions of ten-dimensional (10d) type II supergravities, even though they are unstable. This appears at first sight in contradiction with the criterion. Beyond possible doubts on the validity of these solutions, we propose two answers to this apparent puzzle. A first possibility is that the known 10d solutions always exhibit an energy scale of order or higher than a Kaluza-Klein …
We study the existence and stability of classical de Sitter solutions of type II supergravities with parallel Dp-branes and orientifold Op-planes. Together with the dilaton and volume scalar fields, we consider a third one that distinguishes between parallel and transverse directions to the Dp/Op. We derive the complete scalar potential for these three fields. This formalism allows us to reproduce known constraints obtained in 10d, and to derive new ones. Specifying to group manifolds with constant fluxes, we exclude a large region of parameter space, forbidding de Sitter solutions on nilmanif…
Recently it has been conjectured that string theory does not allow for dS vacua or dS extrema. To scrutinize such a conjecture, it is important to study concrete string theory compactifications and spell out their assumptions and potential shortcomings. We do so for one particular class of string compactifications, namely classical compactifications of type II string theory with fluxes, D-branes and O-planes on manifolds with SU(3) structure. In particular, we revisit previously found dS critical points, construct many new ones and check whether they invalidate the dS swampland conjecture.
Recently proposed de Sitter Swampland conjectures imply non-trivial constraints on a scalar field potential in any effective field theory that admits a quantum gravity completion. The original conjecture apparently excludes many phenomenologically motivated scalar potentials with de Sitter extrema, such as the perturbative Standard Model Higgs potential and the QCD axion potential, as the viable low-energy theories. Subsequently, the refined, weaker conjecture was proposed. However, the full effective potential, having been defined as a Legendre transform, is necessarily convex. This ensures t…
For any quasi de Sitter background, we show that a recently proposed scalar weak gravity conjecture (sWGC) follows from the swampland distance conjecture, together with the covariant entropy bound. While pointing out the limitations of our argument, we suggest how further generalizations of our result might indicate that the shape of the potential of a scalar field in a low-energy effective field theory gets highly constrained due to the distance conjecture alone, going beyond the refined de Sitter conjecture. We also correct some previous comments regarding cosmological implications of the sW…
It has been notoriously difficult to construct a meta-stable de Sitter (dS) vacuum in string theory in a controlled approximation. This suggests the possibility that meta-stable dS belongs to the swampland. In this paper, we propose a swampland criterion in the form of $|\nabla V|\geq\ c \cdot V$ for a scalar potential $V$ of any consistent theory of quantum gravity, for a positive constant $c$. In particular, this bound forbids dS vacua. The existence of this bound is motivated by the abundance of string theory constructions and no-go theorems which exhibit this behavior. We also extend some …
Quantum consistency suggests that any de Sitter patch that lasts a number of Hubble times that exceeds its Gibbons-Hawking entropy divided by the number of light particle species suffers an effect of quantum breaking. Inclusion of other interactions makes the quantum break-time shorter. The requirement that this must not happen puts severe constraints on scalar potentials, essentially suppressing the self-reproduction regimes. In particular, it eliminates both local and global minima with positive energy densities and imposes a general upper bound on the number of e-foldings in any given Hubbl…
It has recently been conjectured that string theory does not admit de Sitter critical points. This note points out that in several cases, including KKLT or racetrack models, this statement is equivalent to the absence of supersymmetric Minkowski or AdS solutions. This equivalence arises from establishing the positivity of the potential in a large-radius limit, requiring a turnover of the potential before reaching an AdS vacuum. For example, this conjecture is incompatible with the simplest 1-modulus KKLT AdS supersymmetric solution.
On the one hand, David Andriot and Christoph Roupec proposed an alternative refined de Sitter conjecture, which gives a natural condition on a combination of the first and second derivatives of the scalar potential. On the other hand, in our previous article, we have found that Palatini Higgs inflation model is in strong tension with the refined de Sitter swampland conjecture. Therefore, following our previous research, in this article we examine if Higgs inflation model and its two variations: Palatini Higgs inflation and Higgs-Dilaton model can satisfy the further refining de Sitter swamplan…
I apply recently proposed "Swampland" conjectures to eternal inflation in single-scalar field theories. Eternal inflation is a phase of infinite self-reproduction of a quasi-de Sitter universe which has been argued to be a generic consequence of cosmological inflation. The originally proposed de Sitter swampland conjectures were shown by Matsui and Takahashi and by Dimopoulos to be generically incompatible with eternal inflation. However, the more recently proposed "refined" swampland conjecture imposes a slightly weaker criterion on the scalar field potential in inflation, and is consistent w…
The Cohen-Kaplan-Nelson (CKN) bound formulates the condition that black hole is not produced by the low energy effective field theory dynamics. In de Sitter space it also constrains the maximal size of the matter distribution to be smaller than the cosmological horizon determined by black hole. On the other hand, the swampland distance conjecture (SDC) predicts that de Sitter space becomes unstable by the descent of the low energy degrees of freedom from UV. This results in the rapid increase in the energy inside the cosmological horizon, the distribution of which can be constrained by the CKN…
In this contribution, we review a general argument showing that de Sitter critical points of extended supergravity are in tension with the magnetic weak gravity conjecture if the gravitino mass is vanishing. Motivated by this assumption, we review then the gravitino conjecture, which states that the limit of vanishing gravitino mass is pathological for the effective field theory description. Finally, we discuss more in general the fate of de Sitter critical points (with massless gravitini) in supergravity and comment on extensions of these works along various directions. Part of the material h…
We observe that racetrack models for moduli stabilization are in tension with strong forms of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC). Moreover, recently, it was noted that controlled KKLT-type de Sitter vacua seem to require a racetrack fine-tuning of the type introduced by Kallosh and Linde. We combine these observations and conclude that the quests for realizing parametrically large axion decay constants and controlled de Sitter vacua are intimately related. Finally, we discuss possible approaches to curing the conflict between the racetrack scheme and the WGC.
The "de Sitter constraint" on the space of effective scalar field theories consistent with superstring theory provides a lower bound on the slope of the potential of a scalar field which dominates the evolution of the Universe, e.g., a hypothetical inflaton field. Whereas models of single scalar field inflation with a canonically normalized field do not obey this constraint, it has been claimed recently in the literature that models of warm inflation can be made compatible with it in the case of large dissipation. The de Sitter constraint is known to be derived from entropy considerations. Sin…
We propose an alternative refined de Sitter conjecture. It is given by a natural condition on a combination of the first and second derivatives of the scalar potential. We derive our conjecture in the same weak coupling, semi-classical regime where the previous refined de Sitter conjecture was derived, using the same tools together with a few more assumptions that we discuss. We further test and constrain free parameters in our conjecture using data points of a classical type IIA supergravity setup. Interestingly, our conjecture easily accommodates slow-roll single field inflation with a conca…
On the basis of the idea that gravity defines a universal UV-completion and using a form of UV/IR correspondence we revisit some Swampland conjectures, in particular de Sitter and infinite distance conjectures, from the point of view of renormalization group energy flow. The rol and limitations of non perturbative instanton effects to define a metastable cosmological constant are briefly discussed in this context.
We study the de Sitter (dS) swampland conjecture in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation model. We obtain the dS swampland bound for the relativistic regime using Bousso's entropy bound argument and proper distance. It restricts $m_{\rm Pl}\nabla V/V$ by some positive constant depending on warping and the field range. In the specific case of the DBI model driven by the quadratic potential, the model-dependent backreaction argument is interpreted as a natural bound for the slow-roll parameter. This shows that quasi-dS spacetime in the DBI model is a result of tuning.
A number of Swampland conjectures and in particular the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC) suggest that de Sitter space is highly unstable if it exists at all. In this paper we construct effective theories of scalars rolling on potentials which are dual to a chain of short-lived dS spaces decaying from one to the next through a cascade of non-perturbative nucleation of bubbles. We find constraints on the effective potential resulting from various swampland criteria, including TCC, Weak Gravity Conjecture and Distance Conjecture. Surprisingly we find that TCC essentially incorporates a…
It was recently argued that the swampland distance conjecture rules out dS vacua at parametrically large field distances. We point out that this conclusion can in principle be avoided in the presence of large fluxes that are not bounded by a tadpole cancellation condition. We then study this possibility in the concrete setting of classical type IIA flux compactifications with (anti-)O6-planes, (anti-)D6-branes and/or KK monopoles and show that, nonetheless, parametrically controlled dS vacua are strongly constrained. In particular, we find that such dS vacua are ruled out at parametrically lar…
The recently introduced swampland criterion for de Sitter (arXiv:1806.08362) can be viewed as a (hierarchically large) bound on the smallness of the slow roll parameter $ε_V$. This leads us to consider the other slow roll parameter $η_V$ more closely, and we are lead to conjecture that the bound is not necessarily on $ε_V$, but on slow roll itself. A natural refinement of the de Sitter swampland conjecture is therefore that slow roll is violated at ${\cal O}(1)$ in Planck units in any UV complete theory. A corollary is that $ε_V$ need not necessarily be ${\cal O}(1)$, if $η_V \lesssim -{\cal O…
We calculate the entanglement entropy of the de-Sitter (dS) static patch in the context of the DS/dS correspondence. Interestingly, we find that there exists a one parameter family of bulk minimal surfaces that all have the same area. Two of them have appeared earlier in the literature. All of them correctly calculate the dS entropy. One surface yields the entanglement between the two different CFTs that provide the holographic dual of the bulk DS geometry. The second surface describes the entanglement across the horizon in the boundary static patch. The other surfaces describe a mixture of th…
Motivated by the recently proposed de Sitter swampland conjecture, a formally same condition imposed instead on the convex and real exact effective potential is contemplated. Compared to the original conjecture, the modified condition admits a broader class of low-energy effective theories such as those with local maxima and/or false de Sitter vacua with some restrictions, as long as there is an anti-de Sitter vacuum. The observed accelerating expansion of the universe might therefore be attributed to a quintessence or a metastable vacuum. The former solution can be simplified and thus better …
An alternative refined de Sitter conjecture giving rise to a natural combination of the first and second derivatives of the scalar potential was proposed recently by David Andriot and Christoph Roupec (Fortsch. Phys. 67 (2019) no.1-2, 1800105). In this work, we study the inflation models in a general scalar-tensor theory with exponential and hyperbolic tangent forms of potential as well as model with quantum corrected potential and examine whether these three models of inflation can satisfy this further refining de Sitter swampland conjecture or not. Regarding our analysis with proper choices …
Starting from the swampland distance conjecture, and using the species bound for a large number of weakly-coupled particles, we give a derivation of the recently proposed trans-Planckian censorship conjecture. Our argument demonstrates how a quantum gravity principle requires that trans-Planckian quantum fluctuations should never cross the Hubble horizon. We also comment on how logarithmic corrections to the de-Sitter conjecture arise naturally from such an approach when one relaxes the requirement of traversing parametrically large distances on field space.
The runaway potentials, which do not possess any critical points, are viable potentials which befit the recently proposed de Sitter swampland conjecture very well. In this work, we embed such potentials in the warm inflation scenario motivated by quantum field theory models generating a dissipation coefficient with a dependence cubic in the temperature. It is demonstrated that such models are able to remain in tune with the present observations and they can also satisfy all the three Swampland conjectures, namely the Swampland Distance conjecture, the de Sitter conjecture and the Transplackian…
It is challenging to construct explicit and controllable models that realize de Sitter solutions in string compactifications. This difficulty is the main motivation for the Refined de Sitter Conjecture and the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture which forbid stable de Sitter solutions but allow metastable, unstable and rolling solutions in a theory consistent with quantum gravity. Inspired by this, we first study a toy de Sitter No-Scale Supergravity model and show that for particular choices of parameters it can be consistent with the Refined de Sitter Conjecture and the Trans-Planckian Cen…
The Swampland program aims to distinguish effective theories which can be completed into quantum gravity in the ultraviolet from those which cannot. This article forms an introduction to the field, assuming only a knowledge of quantum field theory and general relativity. It also forms a comprehensive review, covering the range of ideas that are part of the field, from the Weak Gravity Conjecture, through compactifications of String Theory, to the de Sitter conjecture.
We study a model of two scalar fields with a hyperbolic field space and show that it reduces to a single-field Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) model in the limit where the field space becomes infinitely curved. We apply the de Sitter swampland conjecture to the two-field model and take the same limit. It is shown that in the limit, all quantities appearing in the swampland conjecture remain well-defined within the single-field DBI model. Based on a consistency argument, we then speculate that the condition derived in this way can be considered as the de Sitter swampland conjecture for a DBI scalar fie…
The Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal describes the quantum creation of the universe. To have a non-negligible probability to obtain a classical expanding universe, eternal inflation is required, which is severely constrained by Swampland conjectures such as the refined de Sitter conjecture and the distance conjecture. We discuss this issue in detail and demonstrate the incompatibility. We show that the dimensionless parameters in the refined de Sitter conjecture should be bounded from above by a positive power of the scalar potential to realize the classical expanding universe. In other wor…
Motivated by the early discovery of the gigantic landscape of string theory vacua, in recent years people switched direction to try to find constraints on low energy effective field theories from UV-complete descriptions for example quantum gravity or string theory. Those constraints are called swampland criteria. Among the proposed swampland criteria the distance conjecture is the most well-motivated one from the universal behavior of string theory compactifications. It claims that for a type of scalar fields, called moduli, the effective field theory description will break down if it moves a…
We prove that charged gravitini cannot have parametrically small or vanishing Lagrangian mass in de Sitter vacua of extended supergravity while respecting the magnetic weak gravity conjecture. This places large classes of de Sitter solutions of gauged supergravity in the swampland, including all known stable solutions of the N=2 theory. We illustrate this result by analyzing a variety of de Sitter critical points of N=2 matter-coupled supergravity that also include new stable de Sitter solutions. Our results provide concrete evidence that (quasi) de Sitter with charged light gravitini should b…
We point out that the de Sitter swampland conjecture would be falsified if classical fluxed Type IIA orientifold vacua with a single non-BPS D7-brane were indeed part of the string theory landscape. In other words, the dS swampland conjecture implies the cancellation of K-theory charges on a compact space.
In String Gas Cosmology, the simplest shape modulus fields are naturally stabilized by taking into account the presence of string winding and momentum modes. We determine the resulting effective potential for these fields and show that it obeys the de Sitter conjecture, one of the swampland criteria for effective field theories to be consistent with superstring theory.
We investigate interactions between branes of various dimensions, both charged and uncharged, in three non-supersymmetric string models. These include the $USp(32)$ and $U(32)$ orientifold projections of the type IIB and type $0$B strings, as well as the $SO(16) \times SO(16)$ projection of the exceptional heterotic string. The resulting ten-dimensional spectra are free of tachyons, and the combinations of branes that they contain give rise to rich and varied dynamics. We compute static potentials for parallel stacks of branes in three complementary regimes: the probe regime, in which one of t…
One of the main goals of the field of string phenomenology is to describe the properties of our spacetime in low-energy effective models related to and consistent with string theory. It is known that our universe undergoes accelerated expansion, which can be described in Einstein's theory of general relativity as a positive cosmological constant. Within string theory descriptions, this is realized by a scalar field with a positive value of its potential. Oftentimes, this is modeled by having the scalar at a stable, positive minimum. One then obtains a de Sitter spacetime. Constructions of de S…
The refined swampland de Sitter conjecture (SdSC) is a proposed constraint on the form of the total potential in a theory including quantum gravity. According to this conjecture potentials possessing metastable de Sitter vacua are in the swampland of effective field theories that cannot descend from a theory with gravity. It is known that in the Standard Model (SM), as the quark masses and theta-parameter are varied, IR- calculable metastable states in QCD appear (for N > 2 light quarks) and we discuss in detail their properties. We argue that the SdSC excludes the values of quark masses and t…
We review some aspects of the dramatic consequences of supersymmetry breaking on string vacua. In particular, we focus on the issue of vacuum stability in ten-dimensional string models with broken, or without, supersymmetry, whose perturbative spectra are free of tachyons. After formulating the models at stake, we introduce their unified low-energy effective description and present a number of vacuum solutions to the classical equations of motion. In addition, we present a generalization of previous no-go results for de Sitter vacua in warped flux compactifications. Then we analyze the classic…
Supergravity theories at D=4 allow to formulate the Swampland de Sitter conjectures in the complex field space of scalar components of chiral multiplets. We formulate the de Sitter and refined de Sitter conjecture by using the Kähler invariant ${\cal G}$-function and explore a class of models in the Landscape/Swampland scenario which obey and/or violate such conjectures. Furthermore we give a new construction of single exponential potentials in supergravity. These depend on a chiral superfield with a Kähler potential parametrizing an SU(1,1)/U(1) geometry. We show that the construction allows …
We discuss the Swampland Distance Conjecture in the framework of black hole thermodynamics. In particular, we consider black holes in de Sitter space and we show that the Swampland Distance Conjecture is a consequence of the fact that apparent horizons are always inside cosmic event horizons whenever they exist in the case of fast-roll inflation. In addition, we show that the Bekenstein and the Hubble entropy bounds for the entropy in a region of spacetime lead similarly to the same conjecture.
