The intercalation-induced phase transition of MoS2 from the semiconducting 2H to the semimetallic 1T' phase has been studied in detail for nearly a decade; however, the effects of a heterointerface between MoS2 and other two-dimensional (2D) crystals on the phase transition have largely been overlooked. Here, ab initio calculations show that intercalating Li at a MoS2-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) interface stabilizes the 1T phase over the 2H phase of MoS2 by ~ 100 mJ m-2, suggesting that encapsulating MoS2 with hBN may lower the electrochemical energy needed for the intercalation-induced phase transition. However, in situ Raman spectroscopy of hBN-MoS2-hBN heterostructures during electrochemical intercalation of Li+ shows that the phase transition occurs at the same applied voltage for the heterostructure as for bare MoS2. We hypothesize that the predicted thermodynamic stabilization of the 1T'-MoS2-hBN interface is counteracted by an energy barrier to the phase transition imposed by the steric hindrance of the heterointerface. The phase transition occurs at lower applied voltages upon heating the heterostructure, which supports our hypothesis. Our study highlights that interfacial effects of 2D heterostructures can go beyond modulating electrical properties and can modify electrochemical and phase transition behaviors.
Phase transitions of two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures enable many applications including electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and memory; however, the nucleation pathways by which these transitions proceed remain underexplored, prohibiting engineering control for these applications. Here, we demonstrate that the lithium intercalation-induced 2H-1T' phase transition in MoS2 proceeds via nucleation of the 1T' phase at a heterointerface by monitoring the phase transition of MoS2/graphene and MoS2/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures with Raman spectroscopy in s…
In this letter, we study the stability of the domain model for lithium intercalated graphite in stages III and II by means of Density Functional Theory and Kinetic Lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the domain model is either thermodynamically or kinetically stable when compared to the standard model in stages III and II. The existence of domains in the intercalation sequence is well supported by recent high resolution transmission electron microscope observations in lithiated graphite. Moreover, we predict that such domain staging sequences leads to a wide range of diffusivity as r…
The applied potential governs lithium-intercalation and electrode passivation reactions in lithium ion batteries, but are challenging to calibrate in condensed phase DFT calculations. In this work, the "anode potential" of charge-neutral lithium-intercalated graphite (LiC(6)) with oxidized edge planes is computed as a function of Li-content n(Li)) at edge planes, using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), a previously introduced Li+ transfer free energy method, and the experimental Li+/Li(s) value as reference. The voltage assignments are corroborated using explicit electron transfer from fluo…
Lithium intercalated anatase used in Li-ion batteries has some special features: coexistence of Li-rich and Li-poor phases as well as two possible positions for Li ions in the oxygen tetrahedron. A theoretical description of the compound considering those peculiarities is presented. As shown by the performed symmetry analysis, the intercalation induced lattice deformation can be accompanied by the ordering of antiferroelectric type (internal piezoeffect). In the following step, a qualitative illustration of the phase separation in the lithiated anatase is given within the Landau expansion at t…
Based on ab initio calculations, we examine the incorporation of Li atoms in the MoS2/graphene interface. We find that the intercalated Li atoms are energetically more stable than Li atoms adsorbed on the MoS2 surface. The intercalated atoms interact with both graphene sheet and MoS2 layer, increasing the Li binding energies. However, the equilibrium geometries are ruled by the MoS2 layer, where the intercalated Li atoms lie on the top (Li_T) and hollow (Li_H) sites of the MoS2 layer. We calculate the Li diffusion barriers, along the Li_T -> Li_H diffusion path, where we find similar energy ba…
Lithium-intercalated layered transition-metal oxides, LixTMO2, brought about a paradigm change in rechargeable batteries in recent decades and show promise for use in memristors, a type of device for future neural computing and on-chip storage. Thermal transport properties, although being a crucial element in limiting the charging/discharging rate, package density, energy efficiency, and safety of batteries as well as the controllability and energy consumption of memristors, are poorly managed or even understood yet. Here, for the first time, we employ quantum calculations including high-order…
As a storage material for Li-ion batteries, graphene/molybdenum disulfide (Gr/MoS2) composites have been intensively studied in experiments. But the relevant theoretical works from first-principles are lacking. In the current work, van-der-Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations are performed to investigate the interaction of Li in Gr/MoS2 composites. Three interesting features are revealed for the intercalated Gr/Li(n)/MoS2 composites (n = 1 to 9). One is the reason for large Li storage capacity of Gr/MoS2: due to the binding energies per Li atom increase with the increasing nu…
We present a new way to enhance the electron-phonon coupling constant and the critical superconducting temperature of graphene, significantly beyond all reported values. Using density functional theory, we explore the application effects of the tensile biaxial strain on the lithium intercalated graphene. Both effects together, the presence of adatom and the strain, trigger enhancement of critical temperature, up to 300\%, compared to non-strained lithium intercalated graphene.
Lithium intercalation into graphite is the foundation for the lithium-ion battery, and the thermodynamics of the lithiation of graphitic electrodes have been heavily investigated. Intercalated lithium in bulk graphite undergoes structural ordering known as staging to minimize electrostatic repulsions within the crystal lattice. While this process is well-understood for bulk graphite, confinement effects become important at the nanoscale, which can significantly impact the electrochemistry of nanostructured electrodes. Therefore, graphene offers a model platform to study intercalation dynamics …
A model is presented for predicting the open-circuit voltage (OCV) and lithium distribution within lithium-ion anodes containing multiple materials, coupling linear elasticity with a stress-dependent chemical potential. The model is applied to a spherical radially-symmetric nano-particle with a silicon core and a graphite shell, highlighting the large effect on lithium distribution and OCV caused by the stress-coupling. Various performance measures based on the expanded volume, the amount of lithium intercalated and the maximum stress induced, are calculated for a silicon core with a graphite …
In this letter, we report the discovery of superconductivity in Li3Ca2C6. Several graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) with electron donors, are well known as superconductors. It is probably not astonishing, since it is generally admitted that low dimensionality promotes high superconducting transition temperatures. Superconductivity is lacking in pristine graphite, but after charging the graphene planes by intercalation, its electronic properties change considerably and superconducting behaviour can appear. Li3Ca2C6 is a ternary GIC, for which the intercalated sheets are very thick and pol…
Molecular-scale manipulation of electronic/ionic charge accumulation in materials is a preeminent challenge, particularly in electrochemical energy storage. Layered van der Waals (vdW) crystals exemplify a diverse family of materials that permit ions to reversibly associate with a host atomic lattice by intercalation into interlamellar gaps. Motivated principally by the search for high-capacity battery anodes, ion intercalation in composite materials is a subject of intense study. Yet the precise role and ability of heterolayers to modify intercalation reactions remains elusive. Previous studi…
We review recent ab initio molecular dynamics studies of electrode/electrolyte interfaces in lithium ion batteries. Our goals are to introduce experimentalists to simulation techniques applicable to models which are arguably most faithful to experimental conditions so far, and to emphasize to theorists that the inherently interdisciplinary nature of this subject requires bridging the gap between solid and liquid state perspectives. We consider liquid ethylene carbonate (EC) decomposition on lithium intercalated graphite, lithium metal, oxide-coated graphite, and spinel manganese oxide surfaces…
We present an orbital-resolved density functional theory study on the electronic properties of hydrogen and lithium intercalated graphene grown on the Si face of SiC. Starting from the $(6\sqrt3\times6\sqrt3)R30^{\circ}$ surface reconstruction of the graphene/SiC heterosystem, we find that both H and Li can restore the ideal structural characteristics of the two nonequivalent junction parts (i.e. graphene and the SiC substrate) when inserted at the interface. However, the chemical/electrostatic interactions remain different for the two cases. Hence, H-intercalated epitaxial graphene is subject…
We study on transport and magnetic properties of hydrated and lithium-intercalated $α$-RuCl$_3$, Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O, for investigating the effect on mobile-carrier doping into candidate materials for a realization of a Kitaev model. From thermogravitometoric and one-dimensional electron map analyses, we find two crystal structures of this system, that is, mono-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O~$(x\approx0.56, y\approx1.3)$ and bi-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 \cdot y$H$_2$O~$(x\approx0.56, y\approx3.9)$. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity shows a temper…
A major challenge in the development of new battery materials is understanding their fundamental mechanisms of operation and degradation. Their microscopically inhomogeneous nature calls for characterization tools that provide operando and localized information from individual grains and particles. Here we describe an approach that images the nanoscale distribution of ions during electrochemical charging of a battery in a transmission electron microscope liquid flow cell. We use valence energy-loss spectroscopy to track both solvated and intercalated ions, with electronic structure fingerprint…
The stability of Lithium intercalated 2H- and 1T allotropes of Molybdenum disulfide (LixMoS2) is studied within a density-functional theory framework as function of the Li content (x) and the intercalation sites. Octahedral coordination of Li interstitials in the van der Waals gap is found as the most favorite for both allotropes. The critical content of Lithium, required for the initialization of a 2H->1T phase transition is estimated to x ~ 0.4. For smaller Li contents the hexagonal 2H crystal structure is not changed, while 1T-LixMoS2 compounds adopt a monoclinic lattice. All allotropic for…
We present a comparative ab initio study of Li, Na, and Mg storage in tin, including phononic effects and phase competition between alpha and beta Sn. Mg doping at low concentration is found to stabilize the beta phase. On the contrary, Li and Na doping is shown to reverse the stability of the phases at room temperature: Li/Na-doped alpha-Sn is more stable than Li/Na-doped beta-Sn up to a temperature of around 380/400 K. This may rationalize the formation of alpha-Sn upon lithiation and delithiation of beta-Sn anodes reported in experimental studies. The changes in phase stability with Li/Na/M…
The diversified essential properties of the stage-n graphite alkali-intercalation compounds are thoroughly explored by the first-principles calculations. According to their main features, the lithium and non-lithium materials might be quite different from each other in stacking configurations, the intercalated alkali-atom concentrations, the free conduction electron densities, and the atom-dominated & (carbon, alkali)-co-dominated energy bands. The close relations between the alkali-doped metallic behaviors and the geometric symmetries will be clarified through the interlayer atomic interactio…
Electrochemical intercalation is a powerful method for tuning the electronic properties of layered solids. In this work, we report an electro-chemical strategy to controllably intercalate lithium ions into a series of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures built by sandwiching graphene between hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). We demonstrate that encapsulating graphene with h-BN eliminates parasitic surface side reactions while simultaneously creating a new hetero-interface that permits intercalation between the atomically thin layers. To monitor the electrochemical process, we employ the Hall eff…
