Molecular-scale manipulation of electronic/ionic charge accumulation in materials is a preeminent challenge, particularly in electrochemical energy storage. Layered van der Waals (vdW) crystals exemplify a diverse family of materials that permit ions to reversibly associate with a host atomic lattice by intercalation into interlamellar gaps. Motivated principally by the search for high-capacity battery anodes, ion intercalation in composite materials is a subject of intense study. Yet the precise role and ability of heterolayers to modify intercalation reactions remains elusive. Previous studies of vdW hybrids represented ensemble measurements at macroscopic films/powders, which do not permit the isolation and investigation of the chemistry at individual 2-dimensional (2D) interfaces. Here, we demonstrate the intercalation of lithium at the level of individual atomic interfaces of dissimilar vdW layers. Electrochemical devices based on vdW heterostructures comprised of deterministically stacked hexagonal boron nitride, graphene (G) and molybdenum dichalcogenide (MoX2; X = S, Se) layers are fabricated, enabling the direct resolution of intermediate stages in the intercalation of discrete heterointerfaces and the extent of charge transfer to individual layers. Operando magnetoresistance and optical spectroscopy coupled with low-temperature quantum magneto-oscillation measurements show that the creation of intimate vdW heterointerfaces between G and MoX2 engenders over 10-fold accumulation of charge in MoX2 compared to MoX2/MoX2 homointerfaces, while enforcing a more negative intercalation potential than that of bulk MoX2 by at least 0.5 V. Beyond energy storage, our new combined experimental and computational methodology to manipulate and characterize the electrochemical behavior of layered systems opens up new pathways to control the charge density in 2D (opto)electronic devices.
Phase transitions of two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures enable many applications including electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and memory; however, the nucleation pathways by which these transitions proceed remain underexplored, prohibiting engineering control for these applications. Here, we demonstrate that the lithium intercalation-induced 2H-1T' phase transition in MoS2 proceeds via nucleation of the 1T' phase at a heterointerface by monitoring the phase transition of MoS2/graphene and MoS2/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures with Raman spectroscopy in s…
The intercalation-induced phase transition of MoS2 from the semiconducting 2H to the semimetallic 1T' phase has been studied in detail for nearly a decade; however, the effects of a heterointerface between MoS2 and other two-dimensional (2D) crystals on the phase transition have largely been overlooked. Here, ab initio calculations show that intercalating Li at a MoS2-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) interface stabilizes the 1T phase over the 2H phase of MoS2 by ~ 100 mJ m-2, suggesting that encapsulating MoS2 with hBN may lower the electrochemical energy needed for the intercalation-induced phas…
We study the decay of interface induced structural and electronic relaxation effects in epitaxial LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures. The results are based on first-principles band structure calculations for a multilayer configuration with an ultrathin LaAlO3 layer sandwiched between bulk-like SrTiO3 layers. We carry out the structure optimization for the heterointerface and investigate the electronic states of the conducting interface layer, which is found to extend over two SrTiO3 unit cells. The decay of atomic displacements is analyzed as a function of the distance to the interface, and the re…
We investigate the effect of the laser parameters of pulsed laser deposition on the film stoichiometry and electronic properties of LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 (001) heterostructures. The La/Al ratio in the LaAlO_3 films was varied over a wide range from 0.88 to 1.15, and was found to have a strong effect on the interface conductivity. In particular, the carrier density is modulated over more than two orders of magnitude. The film lattice expansion, caused by cation vacancies, is found to be the important functional parameter. These results can be understood to arise from the variations in the electrostat…
Co-intercalation is a potential approach to influence the voltage and mobility with which cations insert in electrodes for energy storage devices. Combining a robust thermodynamic model with first-principles calculations, we present a detailed investigation revealing the important role of H$_2$O during ion intercalation in nano-materials. We examine the scenario of Mg$^{2+}$ and H$_2$O co-intercalation in nano-crystalline Xerogel-V$_2$O$_5$, a potential cathode material to achieve energy density greater than Li-ion batteries. Water co-intercalation in cathode materials could broadly impact an …
Electronic decoupling of graphene from metallic and semiconducting substrates via intercalation of different species is one of the widely used approaches in studies of graphene. In the present work the modification of the electronic and magnetic properties of graphene on ferromagnetic Ni(111) layer via intercalation of halogen atoms (X = F, Cl, Br) is studied using the state-of-the-art density-functional theory approach. It is found that in all gr/X/Ni(111) intercalation systems a graphene layer is fully electronically decoupled from the ferromagnetic substrate; however, different kind (electr…
The application of graphene in electronic devices requires large scale epitaxial growth. The presence of the substrate, however, usually reduces the charge carrier mobility considerably. We show that it is possible to decouple the partially sp3-hybridized first graphitic layer formed on the Si-terminated face of silicon carbide from the substrate by gold intercalation, leading to a completely sp2-hybridized graphene layer with improved electronic properties.
Two-dimensional charge carrier accumulation at oxide heterointerfaces presents a paradigm shift for oxide electronics. Like a capacitor, interfacial charge buildup couples to an electric field across the dielectric medium. To prevent the so-called polar catastrophe, several charge screening mechanisms emerge, including polar distortions and interfacial intermixing which reduce the sharpness of the interface. Here, we examine how atomic intermixing at oxide interfaces affect the balance between polar distortions and electric potential across the dielectric medium. We find that intermixing moves…
Graphene has attracted great attentions since its first discovery in 2004. Various approaches have been proposed to control its physical and electronic properties. Here, we report that graphene based intercalation compounds is an efficient method to modify the electronic properties of few layer graphene (FLG). FeCl3 intercalated FLG were successfully prepared by two-zone vapor transport method. This is the first report on full intercalation for graphene samples. The features of the Raman G peak of such few-layer graphene intercalation compounds (FLGIC) are in good agreement with their full int…
We investigated systematic evolutions of structural and electronic properties of LixWO3 films, induced by Li-ion electrochemical reactions. Chronoamperometric Li-ion intercalation could control the amount of Li content up to x ~ 0.5. The resistivity abruptly decreased with increasing x and the films underwent an insulator to metal transition (IMT) within a range of 0.2 < x < 0.24, which was consistent with IMT of cubic NaxWO3. The X-ray diffraction analyses revealed the coexistence of tetragonal and cubic phases across IMT, suggesting that the alkaline-ion content was a primary factor for meta…
Intercalation materials are promising candidates for reversible energy storage and are, for example, used as lithium-battery electrodes, hydrogen-storage compounds, and electrochromic materials. An important issue preventing the more widespread use of these materials is that they undergo structural transformations (of up to ~10% lattice strains) during intercalation, which expand the material, nucleate microcracks, and, ultimately, lead to material failure. Besides the structural transformation of lattices, the crystallographic texture of the intercalation material plays a key role in governin…
Oxygen was electrochemically intercalated into Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ sintered samples, single crystals and a thin film. We estimate the diffusion length to a few $μ$m and the concentration of the intercalated oxygen to $δ$ $\simeq$ 0.01. The latter is thus much smaller than for the cuprate and nickelate parent compounds, for which $δ$ $>$ 0.1 is obtained, which could be a consequence of larger steric effects. The influence of the oxygen doping state on resistivity is small, indicating also a poor charge transfer to the conduction band. It is shown that electrochemical intercalation of oxygen may also …
BAs is III-V semiconductor with ultra-high thermal conductivity, but many of its electronic properties are unknown. This work applies predictive atomistic calculations to investigate the properties of BAs heterostructures, such as strain effects on band alignments and carrier mobility, considering BAs as both a thin film and a substrate for lattice-matched materials. The results show that strain decreases the band gap independent of sign or direction. In addition, biaxial tensile strain increases the in-plane electron and hole mobilities by more than 60% compared to the unstrained values due t…
The emerging material class of complex-oxides, where manipulation of physical properties lead to new functionalities at their heterointerfaces, is expected to open new frontiers in Spintronics. For example, SrRuO_3 is a promising material where external stimuli like strain, temperature and structural distortions control the stability of electronic and magnetic states, across its magnetic phase transition, useful for Spintronics. Despite this, not much has been studied to understand such correlations in SrRuO_3. Here we explore the influence of electron-lattice correlation to electron-transport…
Electronic transmission in monolayer ReS$_{2}$ and ReS$_{2}$ based van der Waals (vdW) heterointerfaces are studied here. Since ReS$_{2}$/WSe$_{2}$ and ReS$_{2}$/MoSe$_{2}$ type-II vdW heterostructures are suitable for near infrared (NIR)/short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodetection, the role of interlayer coupling at the heterointerfaces is examined in this work. Besides, a detailed theoretical study is presented employing density functional theory (DFT) and nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) combination to analyse the transmission spectra of the two-port devices with ReS$_{2}$/WSe$_{2}$ and…
Ion concentration polarization (CP, current-induced concentration gradient adjacent to a charge-selective interface) has been well studied for single-phase mixed conductors (e.g., liquid electrolyte), but multiphase CP has been rarely addressed in literature. In our recent publication, we proposed that CP above certain threshold currents can flip the phase distribution in multiphase ion-intercalation nanofilms sandwiched by ion-blocking electrodes. We call this phenomenon as multiphase polarization (MP). We then proposed that MP can further lead to nonvolatile interfacial resistive switching (…
Supercapacitors have recently gained popularity as possible energy storage systems due to their high cycling ability and increased power density. However, one of the major drawbacks of supercapacitors is that they have a low energy density, which makes them less effective than batteries. Herein, we explore different methods of increasing the supercapacitor performance of the perovskite SrCoO3. We carry out first-principles calculations to systematically study how SrCoO3/graphene interface, oxygen vacancies, and doping improve the performance of strontium cobaltite as an anion-intercalation-typ…
We develop a strategy for graphene growth on Ru(0001) followed by silicon-layer intercalation that not only weakens the interaction of graphene with the metal substrate but also retains its superlative properties. This G/Si/Ru architecture, produced by silicon-layer intercalation approach (SIA), was characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and angle resolved electron photoemission spectroscopy. These experiments show high structural and electronic qualities of this new composite. The SIA allows for an atomic control of the distance between the graphene and the metal substrat…
Electrical gate-manipulated exchange bias (EB) effect is a long-term goal for spintronics applications. Meanwhile, the emergence of van der Waals (vdW) magnetic heterostructures provides ideal platforms for the study of interlayer magnetic coupling. However, to date, the electrical gate-controlled EB effect has yet to be realized in vdW heterostructures. Here, for the first time, we realized electrically-controllable EB effects in a vdW antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferromagnetic (FM) heterostructure, FePS3-Fe5GeTe2. For pristine FePS3-Fe5GeTe2 heterostructures, sizable EB effects can be generated d…
We investigated \LAO\ - \STO\ heterointerfaces grown either in oxygen rich or poor atmosphere by soft x-ray spectroscopy. Resonant photoemission across the Ti L$_{2,3}$ absorption edge of the valence band and Ti 2p core level spectroscopy directly monitor the impact of oxygen treatment upon the electronic structure. Two types of Ti$^{3+}$ related charge carriers are identified. One is located at the Fermi energy and related to the filling of the \STO\ conduction band. It appears for low oxygen pressure only. The other one is centered at E$_{B}$ $\approx$ 1 eV and independent of the oxygen pres…

Intercalation of atomic species through epitaxial graphene layers began only a few years following its initial report in 2004. The impact of intercalation on the electronic properties of the graphene is well known; however, the intercalant itself can also exhibit intriguing properties not found in nature. This suggests that a shift in the focus of epitaxial graphene intercalation studies may lead to fruitful exploration of many new forms of traditionally 3D materials. In the following forward-looking review, we summarize the primary techniques used to achieve and characterize EG intercalation,…
X-ray amorphous manganese oxides were prepared by reduction of sodium permanganate by lithium iodide in aqueous medium (MnOx-I) and by decomposition of manganese carbonate at moderate temperature (MnOx-C). TEM showed that these materials are not amorphous, but nanostructured, with a prominent spinel substructure in MnOx-C. These materials intercalate lithium with capacities up to 200 mAh/g at first cycle (potential window 1.8-4.3 V) and 175 mAh/g at 100th cycle. Best performances for MnOx-C are obtained with cobalt doping. Potential electrochemical spectroscopy shows that the initial discharge…
GICs doped with elements containing d and f orbitals have been studied rarely. We control the distribution and density of intercalated actinide metals (Th, U and Pu), and consider the effect of changing the distance of two adjacent carbon layers on the electronic structure so as to infer the physical properties of such materials under high pressure or high temperature - which is of great significance in fundamental research. According to band schemas, those GICs are all metallic. The projected density of states (PDOS) indicates that the metal atoms first undergo hybridization of its s, p, d, a…
We present detailed multi frequency resonant Raman measurements of potassium graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). From a well controlled and consecutive in-situ intercalation and high temperature de-intercalation approach the response of each stage up to stage VI is identified. The positions of the G and 2D lines as a function of staging depend on the charge transfer from K to the graphite layers and on the lattice expansion. Ab-initio calculations of the density and the electronic band-structure demonstrate that most (but not all) of the transferred charge remains on the graphene sheets a…
Decoupling of the graphene layer from the ferromagnetic substrate via intercalation of sp metal has recently been proposed as an effective way to realize single-layer graphene-based spin-filter. Here, the structural and electronic properties of the prototype system, graphene/Al/Ni(111), are investigated via combination of electron diffraction and spectroscopic methods. These studies are accompanied by state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. The properties of this prospective Al-intercalation-like system and its possible implementations in future graphene-based devices are discussed…
Conversion reaction is one of the most important chemical processes in energy storage such as lithium ion batteries. While it is generally assumed that the conversion reaction is initiated by ion intercalation into the electrode material, solid evidence of intercalation and the subsequent transition mechanism to conversion remain elusive. Here, using well-defined WO3 single crystalline thin films grown on Nb doped SrTiO3(001) as a model electrode, we elucidate the conversion reaction mechanisms during Li+, Na+ and Ca2+ insertion into WO3 by in situ transmission electron microscopy studies. Int…
The design of novel cathode materials for Li-ion batteries would greatly benefit from accurate first-principles predictions of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties as well as intercalation voltages in compounds containing transition-metal elements. For such systems, density-functional theory (DFT) with standard (semi-)local exchange-correlation functionals is of limited use as it often fails due to strong self-interaction errors that are especially relevant in the partially filled $d$ shells. Here, we perform a detailed comparative study of the phospho-olivine cathode materials Li$_…
The electronic structure and magnetic properties of the graphene/Fe/Ni(111) system were investigated via combination of the density functional theory calculations and electron-spectroscopy methods. This system was prepared via intercalation of thin Fe layer (1 ML) underneath graphene on Ni(111) and its inert properties were verified by means of photoelectron spectroscopy. Intercalation of iron in the space between graphene and Ni(111) changes drastically the magnetic response from the graphene layer that is explained by the formation of the highly spin-polarized $3d_{z^2}$ quantum-well state i…
We report a gradual suppression of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface on substitution of chromium at the Al sites. The sheet carrier density at the interface (ns) drops monotonically from 2.2x10(14) cm-2 to 2.5x10(13) cm-2 on replacing nearly 60 percent of Al sites by Cr and the sheet resistance (Rs) exceeds the quantum limit for localization (h/2e2) in the concentrating range 40 to 60 percent of Cr.
We investigated the influences charge writing on the surface work function and resistance of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterointerface in several gas environments (air, O2, N2, and H2/N2). Charge writing decreased the surface work function and resistance of the LAO/STO sample quite a lot in air but slightly in O2.The interface carrier density was extracted from the measured sheet resistance and compared with that obtained from the proposed charge-writing mechanisms, such as carrier transfer via surface adsorbates and surface redox. Such quantitative analyses suggested that additional process…
Electrochemical intercalation is a powerful method for tuning the electronic properties of layered solids. In this work, we report an electro-chemical strategy to controllably intercalate lithium ions into a series of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures built by sandwiching graphene between hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). We demonstrate that encapsulating graphene with h-BN eliminates parasitic surface side reactions while simultaneously creating a new hetero-interface that permits intercalation between the atomically thin layers. To monitor the electrochemical process, we employ the Hall eff…
Atomic intercalation in two dimensional (2D) layered materials can engineer the electronic structure at the atomic scale, bringing out tunable physical and chemical properties which are quite distinct in comparison with pristine one. Among them, electron-doped engineering induced by intercalation is an efficient route to modulate electronic states in 2D layers. Herein, we demonstrate a semiconducting to the metallic phase transition in zirconium diselenide (ZrSe2) single crystal via controllable incorporation of copper (Cu) atoms. Combined with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) …
We propose that one of the best grounds for the materials design from the viewpoint of {\it electron correlation} such as ferromagnetism, superconductivity is the atomically controlled nanostructures and heterointerfaces, as theoretically demonstrated here from three examples with first-principles calculations: (i) Band ferromagnetism in a purely organic polymer of five-membered rings, where the flat-band ferromagnetism due to the electron-electron repulsion is proposed. (ii) Metal-induced gap states (MIGS) of about one atomic monolayer thick at insulator/metal heterointerfaces, recently detec…
We present a comprehensive first-principles study of the electronic charge redistribution in atomically sharp LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$(001) heterointerfaces of both n- and p-types allowing for non-stoichiometric composition. Using two different computational methods within the framework of the density functional theory (linear combination of atomic orbitals and plane waves) we demonstrate that conducting properties of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$(001) heterointerfaces strongly depend on termination of LaAlO$_3$ (001) surface. We argue that both the polar "catastrophe" and the polar distortion scenarios may …
Experiments on single crystal Li$_X$FePO$_4$ (LFP) nanoparticles indicate rich nonequilibrium phase behavior, such as suppression of phase separation at high lithiation rates, striped patterns of coherent phase boundaries, nucleation by binarysolid surface wetting and intercalation waves. These observations have been successfully predicted (prior to the experiments) by 1D depth-averaged phase-field models, which neglect any subsurface phase separation. In this paper, using an electro-chemo-mechanical phase-field model, we investigate the coherent non-equilibrium subsurface phase morphologies t…
We present a study of quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene obtained by intercalation of Au atoms at the interface between the carbon buffer layer (Bu-L) and the silicon-terminated face (0001) of 4H-silicon carbide. Au intercalation is achieved by deposition of atomically thin Au on the Bu-L followed by annealing at 850 °C in an Argon atmosphere. We explore the intercalation of Au and decoupling of the Bu-L into quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene by surface science characterizations and electron transport in top-gated electronic devices. By gate-dependent magnetotransport we find that the…
Graphene on silicon carbide (SiC) bears great potential for future graphene electronic applications because it is available on the wafer-scale and its properties can be custom-tailored by inserting various atoms into the graphene/SiC interface. It remains unclear, however, how atoms can cross the impermeable graphene layer during this widely used intercalation process. Here we demonstrate that, in contrast to the current consensus, graphene layers on SiC are not homogeneous, but instead composed of domains of different crystallographic stacking. We show that these domains are intrinsically for…
The coloration mechanisms in electrochromic (EC) systems can be probed by comparing the dynamics of the electrical and optical responses. In this paper, the linear frequency-dependent electrical and optical responses of an amorphous tungsten oxide thin film were measured simultaneously by a combination of two techniques$\text{---}$that is, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the so-called color impedance spectroscopy (CIS). This was done at different bias potentials, which can be associated with different intercalation levels. Equivalent circuit fitting to the EIS spectra was used…
Exotic ordered ground states driven by electronic correlations are expected to be induced in monolayer graphene when doped to the Van Hove singularity. Such doping levels are reached by intercalating Gd in graphene on SiC(0001), resulting in a strong homogeneity and stability. The electronic spectrum now exhibits severe renormalizations. Flat bands develop which is driven by electronic correlations according to our theoretical studies. Due to strong electron-phonon coupling in this regime, polaron replica bands develop. Thus, interesting ordered ground states should be made accessible.
Upon insertion and extraction of lithium, materials important for electrochemical energy storage can undergo changes in thermal conductivity ($Λ$) and elastic modulus ($\it M$). These changes are attributed to evolution of the intrinsic thermal carrier lifetime and interatomic bonding strength associated with structural transitions of electrode materials with varying degrees of reversibility. Using in situ time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) and picosecond acoustics, we systemically study $Λ$ and $\it M$ of conversion, intercalation and alloying electrode materials during cycling. The interca…
A set of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO-STO) interfaces has been probed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy in order to contrast and compare the effects of LAO overlayer thickness and of the growth conditions on the electronic properties of these heterostructures. These effects are tracked by considering the band-offset and the density of Ti3+ states, respectively. It is shown that the dominant effects on the local electronic properties are determined by the O2 partial pressure during the growth. In particular, a low P(O2) yields Ti3+ states with higher density and lower binding energy as compared to the …
