We establish functional analytic properties of the Stokes operator with bounded measurable coefficients on $L^p_σ (\mathbb{R}^d)$, $d \geq 2$, for $\lvert 1 / p - 1 / 2 \rvert < 1 / d$. These include optimal resolvent bounds and the property of maximal $L^q$-regularity. We further give regularity estimates on the gradient of the solution to the Stokes resolvent problem with bounded measurable coefficients. As a key to these results we establish the validity of a non-local Caccioppoli inequality to solutions of the Stokes resolvent problem.
We investigate off-diagonal decay properties of the generalized Stokes semigroup with bounded measurable coefficients on $\mathrm{L}^2_σ (\mathbb{R}^d)$. Such estimates are well-known for elliptic equations in the form of pointwise heat kernel bounds and for elliptic systems in the form of integrated off-diagonal estimates. On our way to unveil this off-diagonal behavior we prove resolvent estimates in Morrey spaces $\mathrm{L}^{2 , ν} (\mathbb{R}^d)$ with $0 \leq ν< 2$.
We establish the existence and the pointwise bound of the fundamental solution for the stationary Stokes system with measurable coefficients in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \ge 3$, under the assumption that weak solutions of the system are locally Hölder continuous. We also discuss the existence and the pointwise bound of the Green function for the Stokes system with measurable coefficients on $Ω$, where $Ω$ is an unbounded domain such that the divergence equation is solvable. Such a domain includes, for example, half space and an exterior domain.
We study the stationary Stokes system with variable coefficients in the whole space, a half space, and on bounded Lipschitz domains. In the whole and half spaces, we obtain a priori $\dot W^1_q$-estimates for any $q\in [2,\infty)$ when the coefficients are merely measurable functions in one fixed direction. For the system on bounded Lipschitz domains with a small Lipschitz constant, we obtain a $W^1_q$-estimate and prove the solvability for any $q\in (1,\infty)$ when the coefficients are merely measurable functions in one direction and have locally small mean oscillations in the orthogonal dir…
We study the Green function for the stationary Stokes system with bounded measurable coefficients in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 3$. We construct the Green function in $Ω$ under the condition $(\bf{A1})$ that weak solutions of the system enjoy interior Hölder continuity. We also prove that $(\bf{A1})$ holds, for example, when the coefficients are $\mathrm{VMO}$. Moreover, we obtain the global pointwise estimate for the Green function under the additional assumption $(\bf{A2})$ that weak solutions of Dirichlet problems are locally bounded up to the boundary of the …
We consider the Stokes resolvent problem in a two-dimensional bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove $\mathrm{L}^p$-resolvent estimates for $p$ satisfying the condition $\lvert 1 / p - 1 / 2 \rvert < 1 / 4 + \varepsilon$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$. We further show that the Stokes operator admits the property of maximal regularity and that its $\mathrm{H}^{\infty}$-calculus is bounded. This is then used to characterize domains of fractional powers of the Stokes operator. Finally, we give an application to the regularity theory of weak solutio…
We are concerned with the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^d$ (with $d\geq2$). In a critical regularity setting, we establish local well-posedness for large data with no vacuum and global well-posedness for small perturbations of a stable constant equilibrium state. Our results rely on new maximal regularity estimates - of independent interest - for the semigroup of the Lam\{é} operator, and of the linearized compressible Navier-Stokes equations.
We construct Green functions of conormal derivative problems for the stationary Stokes system with measurable coefficients in a two dimensional Reifenberg flat domain.
On a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 3$, we continue the study of Shen and of Kunstmann and Weis of the Stokes operator on $\mathrm{L}^p_σ (Ω)$. We employ their results in order to determine the domain of the square root of the Stokes operator as the space $\mathrm{W}^{1 , p}_{0 , σ} (Ω)$ for $\lvert \frac{1}{p} - \frac{1}{2} \rvert < \frac{1}{d} + \varepsilon$ and some $\varepsilon > 0$. This characterization provides gradient estimates as well as $\mathrm{L}^p$-$\mathrm{L}^q$-mapping properties of the corresponding semigroup. In the three-dimensional case this provi…
We prove the existence and pointwise bounds of the Green functions for stationary Stokes systems with measurable coefficients in two dimensional domains. We also establish pointwise bounds of the derivatives of the Green functions under a regularity assumption on the $L_1$-mean oscillations of the coefficients.
In this paper we will prove that suitable weak solutions of three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domain can be constructed by a particular type of artificial compressibility approximation.
We prove unique existence of mild solutions on $L^{\infty}_σ$ for the Navier-Stokes equations in an exterior domain in $ \mathbb{R}^{n}$, $n\geq 2$, subject to the non-slip boundary condition.
In this paper, we study regularizing effects of the composition operator $S(t)\mathbb{P}\partial$ for the Stokes semigroup $S(t)$ and the Helmholtz projection $\mathbb{P}$ in a space of bounded functions. We establish new a priori $L^{\infty}$-estimates of the operator $S(t)\mathbb{P}\partial$ for a certain class of domains including bounded and exterior domains. They imply unique existence of mild solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in a space of bounded functions.
We prove the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for data that are analytic only near the boundary in a general two-dimensional bounded domain. Our proof is direct, using the vorticity formulation with a nonlocal boundary condition, the explicit semigroup of the linear Stokes problem near the flatten boundary, and the standard wellposedness theory of Navier-Stokes equations in Sobolev spaces away from the boundary.
In this paper some kind of asymptotic behavior of the solutions for the Navier-Stokes system on abstract Banach spaces is studied under the existence of global in time solutions. The asymptotic stability of the zero solution is also shown.
In this paper we establish the uniform estimates of strong solutions with respect to the Mach number and the dielectric constant to the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system in a bounded domain. Based on these uniform estimates, we obtain the convergence of the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations for well-prepared data.
We show that for any uniformly parabolic fully nonlinear second-order equation with bounded measurable "coefficients" and bounded "free" term in any cylindrical smooth domain with smooth boundary data one can find an approximating equation which has a unique continuous solution with the first derivatives bounded and the second spacial derivatives locally bounded. The approximating equation is constructed in such a way that it modifies the original one only for large values of the unknown function and its spacial derivatives.
The present paper establishes a certain duality between the Dirichlet and Regularity problems for elliptic operators with $t$-independent complex bounded measurable coefficients ($t$ being the transversal direction to the boundary). To be precise, we show that the Dirichlet boundary value problem is solvable in $L^{p'}$, subject to the square function and non-tangential maximal function estimates, if and only if the corresponding Regularity problem is solvable in $L^p$. Moreover, the solutions admit layer potential representations. In particular, we prove that for any elliptic operator with $t…
We consider Stokes systems with measurable coefficients and Lions-type boundary conditions. We show that, in contrast to the Dirichlet boundary conditions, local boundary mixed-norm $L_{s,q}$-estimates hold for the spatial second-order derivatives of solutions, assuming the smallness of the mean oscillations of the coefficients with respect to the spatial variables in small cylinders. In the un-mixed norm case with $s=q=2$, the result is still new and provides local boundary Caccioppoli-type estimates. The main challenges in the work arise from the lack of regularity of the pressure and time d…
The initial boundary value problems for compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson is considered on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ in this paper. The global existence of smooth solutions near a given steady state for compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson with physical boundary conditions is established with the exponential stability. An important feature is that the steady state (except velocity) and the background profile are allowed to be of large variation.
We investigate the uniform regularity and vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. It is shown that there exists a unique strong solution of the incompressible chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system in a finite time interval which is independent of the viscosity coefficient. Moreover, the solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space, which allows us to take the vanishing viscosity limit to obtain the incompressible inviscid chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system.
We study the global and local existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with anisotropic viscosity in a bounded cylindrical domain $Q=Ω\times (0,1)$, where $Ω$ is a star-shaped domain in $R^2$. In this paper, we consider the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on the lateral boundary and vanishing normal trace on the top and the bottom.
We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a viscous compressible fluid interacting with the outer world through general in/out flux boundary conditions. We consider a hard--sphere type pressure EOS and show that all trajectories eventually enter a bounded absorbing set. In particular, the associated omega-limit sets are compact and support a stationary statistical solution.
In this paper, we establish the global existence of small solutions to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system in the half-space. The initial density only has to be bounded and close enough to a positive constant, and the initial velocity belongs to some critical Besov space. With a little bit more regularity for the initial velocity, those solutions are proved to be unique. In the last section of the paper, our results are partially extended to the bounded domain case.
We show that for any uniformly elliptic fully nonlinear second-order equation with bounded measurable "coefficients" and bounded "free" term one can find an approximating equation which has a unique continuous and having the second derivatives locally bounded solution in a given smooth domain with smooth boundary data. The approximating equation is constructed in such a way that it modifies the original one only for large values of the unknown function and its derivatives.
We consider the vanishing viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that the inviscid limit holds in the energy norm if the product of the components of the Navier-Stokes solutions are equicontinuous at $x_2=0$. A sufficient condition for this to hold is that the tangential Navier-Stokes velocity remains uniformly bounded and has a uniformly integrable tangential gradient near the boundary.
In this paper, we study the consumption-chemotaxis-Stokes model with porous medium slow diffusion in a three dimensional bounded domain with zero-flux boundary conditions and no-slip boundary condition. In recent ten years, many efforts have been made to find the global bounded solutions of chemotaxis-Stokes system in three dimensional space. Although some important progress has been carried out in some papers, as mentioned by some authors, the question of identifying an optimal condition on m ensuring global boundedness in the three-dimensional framework remains an open challenge. In the pres…
A coupled kinetic-fluid model is investigated, which describes the dynamic behavior of an ensemble of Cucker-Smale flocking particles interacting with a viscous fluid in a three-dimensional bounded domain. This system consists of a kinetic Cucker-Smale equation and a compressible Navier-Stokes system with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The global existence of weak solutions to this system with adiabatic coefficient $γ> {3}/{2}$ is established.
A hyperbolic relaxation of the classical Navier-Stokes problem in 2D bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions is considered. It is proved that this relaxed problem possesses a global strong solution if the relaxation parameter is small and the appropriate norm of the initial data is not very large. Moreover, the dissipativity of such solutions is established and the singular limit as the relaxation parameter tends to zero is studied
In this paper, we intend to study the boundary value problem of the non-stationary Stokes system in a bounded smooth cylinder $Ω\times (0,T)$. As a first step, we consider the problem in half-plane cylinder ${\mathbb R}^n_+ \times (0,T), \,\, 0 < T \leq \infty$. We extend the result of Solonnikov\cite{So} to data in weaker function spaces than the one considered in \cite{So}.
We consider the singularity formation of strong solutions to the two-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with zero heat conduction in a bounded domain. It is shown that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the density and the pressure are bounded from above. Critical Sobolev inequalities of logarithmic type play a crucial role in the proof.
A domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that touches the $x_3$ axis at one point is found with the following property. For any initial value in a $C^2$ class, the axially symmetric Navier Stokes equations with Navier slip boundary condition has a finite energy solution that stays bounded for any given time, i.e. no finite time blow up of the fluid velocity occurs. The result seems to be the first case where the Navier-Stokes regularity problem is solved beyond dimension 2.
In this short paper we establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions to the 3D full compressible Navier-Stokes system with vacuum in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ by the bootstrap argument provided that the viscosity coefficients $λ$ and $μ$ satisfy that $7λ>9μ$ and the initial data $ρ_0$ and $u_0$ satisfy that $\|ρ_0\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$ and $\|ρ_0|u_0|^5\|_{L^1(Ω)}$ are sufficient small.
We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces of the conormal derivative problem for the stationary Stokes system with irregular coefficients on bounded Reifenberg flat domains. The coefficients are assumed to be merely measurable in one direction, which may differ depending on the local coordinate systems, and have small mean oscillations in the other directions. In the course of the proof, we use a local version of the Poincaré inequality on Reifenberg flat domains, the proof of which is of independent interest.
We consider Stokes system in bounded domains and we present conditions of given data, in particular, boundary data, which ensure Hölder continuity of solutions. For Hölder continuous solutions for the Stokes system the normal component of boundary data requires a bit more regular than boundary data of Hölder continuous solutions for the heat equation. We also construct an example, which shows that Hölder continuity is no longer valid, unless the proposed condition of boundary data is fulfilled. As an application, we consider a certain general types of nonlinear systems coupled to fluid equatio…
In this paper, we study the time periodic problem to a three-dimensional chemotaxis-Stokes model with porous medium diffusion $Δn^m$ and inhomogeneous mixed boundary conditions. By using a double-level approximation method and some iterative techniques, we obtain the existence and time-space uniform boundedness of weak time periodic solutions for any $m>1$. Moreover, we improve the regularity for $m\le\frac{4}{3}$ and show that the obtained periodic solutions are in fact strong periodic solutions.
We use the scale $B^s_τ(L_τ(Ω))$, $1/τ=s/d+1/2$, $s>0$, to study the regularity of the stationary Stokes equation on bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 3$, with connected boundary. The regularity in these Besov spaces determines the order of convergence of nonlinear approximation schemes. Our proofs rely on a combination of weighted Sobolev estimates and wavelet characterizations of Besov spaces. By using Banach's fixed point theorem, we extend this analysis to the stationary Navier-Stokes equation with suitable Reynolds number and data, respectively.
General evolution equations in Banach spaces are investigated. Based on an operator-valued version of de Leeuw's transference principle, time-periodic $L^p$ estimates of maximal regularity type are established from $\mathscr{R}$-bounds of the family of solution operators ($\mathscr{R}$-solvers) to the corresponding resolvent problems. With this method, existence of time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations is shown for two configurations: in a periodically moving bounded domain and in an exterior domain, subject to prescribed time-periodic forcing and boundary data.
We prove existence and asymptotic stability of the stationary solution for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic gas dynamics with a density dependent diffusion in a bounded interval. We present the necessary conditions to be imposed on the boundary data which ensure existence and uniqueness of the steady state, and we subsequent investigate its stability properties by means of the construction of a suitable Lyapunov functional for the system. The Saint-Venant system, modeling the dynamics of a shallow compressible fluid, fits into this general framework.
For barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in three-dimensional (3D) bounded domains, we prove that any finite energy weak solution obtained by Lions [Mathematical topics in fluid mechanics, Vol. 2. Compressible models(1998)] and Feireisl-Novotný-Petzeltová [J. Math. Fluid Mech. 3(2001), 358-392] decays exponentially to the equilibrium state. This result is established by both using the extra integrability of the density due to Lions and constructing a suitable Lyapunov functional just under the framework of Lions-Feireisl's weak solutions.
We study Neumann functions for divergence form, second order elliptic systems with bounded measurable coefficients in a bounded Lipschitz domain or a Lipschitz graph domain. We establish existence, uniqueness, and various estimates for the Neumann functions under the assumption that weak solutions of the system enjoy interior Hölder continuity. Also, we establish global pointwise bounds for the Neumann functions under the assumption that weak solutions of the system satisfy a certain natural local boundedness estimate. Moreover, we prove that such a local boundedness estimate for weak solution…
We study Green functions for the pressure of stationary Stokes systems in a (possibly unbounded) domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $d\ge 2$. We construct the Green function when coefficients are merely measurable in one direction and have Dini mean oscillation in the other directions, and $Ω$ is such that the divergence equation is solvable there. We also establish global pointwise bounds for the Green function and its derivatives when coefficients have Dini mean oscillation and $Ω$ has a $C^{1,\rm{Dini}}$ boundary. Green functions for the flow velocity of Stokes systems are also considere…
We prove the mixed-norm Sobolev estimates for solutions to both divergence and non-divergence form time-dependent Stokes systems with unbounded measurable coefficients having small mean oscillations with respect to the spatial variable in small cylinders. As a special case, our results imply Caccioppoli's type estimates for the Stokes systems with variable coefficients. A new $ε$-regularity criterion for Leray-Hopf weak solutions of Navier-Stokes equations is also obtained as a consequence of our regularity results, which in turn implies some borderline cases of the well-known Serrin's regular…

The Navier-Stokes-$α$ equations belong to the family of LES (Large Eddy Simulation) models whose fundamental idea is to capture the influence of the small scales on the large ones without computing all the whole range present in the flow. The constant $α$ is a regime flow parameter that has the dimension of the smallest scale being resolvable by the model. Hence, when $α=0$, one recovers the classical Navier-Stokes equations for a flow of viscous, incompressible, Newtonian fluids. Furthermore, the Navier-Stokes-$α$ equations can also be interpreted as a regularization of the Navier-Stokes equa…
This paper is concerned with the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory in the inviscid limit of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which is an extension of the pioneer paper (Y. Guo et al., 2017, Ann. PDE) from a domain of $[0,L]\times\mathbb{R}_+$ to $[0,L]\times[0,2]$. Under the symmetry assumption, we establish the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansions and the error estimates. The convergence rate as $\e\rightarrow 0$ is also given.
In the present paper, we study the uniform regularity and vanishing dissipation limit for the full compressible Navier-Stokes system whose viscosity and heat conductivity are allowed to vanish at different order. The problem is studied in a 3-D bounded domain with Navier-slip type boundary conditions \eqref{1.9}. It is shown that there exists a unique strong solution to the full compressible Navier-Stokes system with the boundary conditions \eqref{1.9} in a finite time interval which is independent of the viscosity and heat conductivity. The solution is uniform bounded in $W^{1,\infty}$ and a …
We study the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the two-dimensional strip $\mathbb{R} \times [0,L]$, with periodic boundary conditions and no exterior forcing. If the initial velocity is bounded, we prove that the solution remains uniformly bounded for all times, and that the vorticity distribution converges to zero as $t \to \infty$. We deduce that, after a transient period, a laminar regime emerges in which the solution rapidly converges to a shear flow governed by the one-dimensional heat equation. Our approach is constructive and gives explicit estimates on the size of the solution …
We obtain an asymptotic Hölder estimate for expectations of a quite general class of discrete stochastic processes. Such expectations can also be described as solutions to a dynamic programming principle or as solutions to discretized PDEs. The result, which is also generalized to functions satisfying Pucci-type inequalities for discrete extremal operators, is a counterpart to the Krylov-Safonov regularity result in PDEs. However, the discrete step size $\varepsilon$ has some crucial effects compared to the PDE setting. The proof combines analytic and probabilistic arguments.
We prove that for a given smooth initial value, if the finite element solution of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is bounded in a certain norm with a relatively small mesh size, then the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with this given initial value must be smooth and unique, and is successfully approximated by the numerical solution.
We prove that $L^2$ weak solutions to hypoelliptic equations with bounded measurable coefficients are Hölder continuous. The proof relies on classical techniques developed by De Giorgi and Moser together with the averaging lemma and regularity transfers developed in kinetic theory. The latter tool is used repeatedly: first in the proof of the local gain of integrability of sub-solutions; second in proving that the gradient with respect to the velocity variable is $L^{2+ε}_{\mathrm{loc}}$; third, in the proof of an "hypoelliptic isoperimetric De Giorgi lemma." To get such a lemma, we develop a …
