In this paper, we introduce relative LS category of a map and study some of its properties. Then we introduce `higher topological complexity' of a map, a homotopy invariant. We give a cohomological lower bound and compare it with previously known `topological complexity' of a map. Moreover, we study the relation between Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and topological complexity of two closed oriented manifolds connected by a degree one map.
Farber and Rudyak introduced topological complexity $\mathbf{TC}(X)$ of motion planning and its higher analogs $\mathbf{TC}_n(X)$ to measure the complexity of assigning paths to point tuples. Motivated by motion planning where a robotic system starts at the home configuration and possibly comes back after passing through a list of locations, we define three other classes of topological complexities $\mathbf{LTC}_n(X)$, $\mathbf{ltc}_n(X)$ and $\mathbf{tc}_n(X)$. We will compare these notions and compute the latter for some familiar classes of spaces.
In this paper, we study three relative LS categories of a map and study some of their properties. Then we introduce the `higher topological complexity' and `weak higher topological complexity' of a map. Each of them are homotopy invariants. We discuss some lower and upper bounds of these in invariants and compare them with previously known `topological complexities' of a map.
We give a simple algebraic characterisation of the sectional category of rational maps admitting a homotopy retraction. As a particular case we get the Félix-Halperin theorem for rational Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and prove the conjecture of Jessup-Murillo-Parent on rational topological complexity. We also give a characterisation for relative category in the sense of Doeraene-El Haouari.
In this article we study thick ideals defined by periodic self maps in the stable motivic homotopy category over $\mathbb{C}$. In addition, we extend some results of Ruth Joachimi about the relation between thick ideals defined by motivic Morava K-theories and the preimages of the thick ideals in the stable homotopy category under Betti realization.
Given a map $f: M \to N$ of degree 1 of closed manifolds. Is it true that the Lusternik--Schnirelmann category of the range of the map is not more that the category of the domain? We discuss this and some related questions.
For any collection of spaces A, we investigate two non-negative integer homotopy invariants of maps: l_A(f), the A-cone length of f, and L_A(f), the A-category of f. When A is the collection of all spaces, these are the cone length and category of f, respectively, both of which have been studied previously. The following results have been obtained: (1) For a map of one homotopy pushout diagram into another, we derive an upper bound for I_A and L_A of the induced map of homotopy pushouts in terms of I_A and L_A of the other maps. This has many applications including an inequality for I_A and L_…
We study phantom maps and homology theories in a stable homotopy category S via a certain Abelian category A. We express the group P(X,Y) of phantom maps X -> Y as an Ext group in A, and give conditions on X or Y which guarantee that it vanishes. We also determine P(X,HB). We show that any composite of two phantom maps is zero, and use this to reduce Margolis's axiomatisation conjecture to an extension problem. We show that a certain functor S -> A is the universal example of a homology theory with values in an AB 5 category and compare this with some results of Freyd.
Given a selfmap $f:X\to X$ on a compact connected polyhedron $X$, H. Schirmer gave necessary and sufficient conditions for a nonempty closed subset $A$ to be the fixed point set of a map in the homotopy class of $f$. R. Brown and C. Soderlund extended Schirmer's result to the category of fiber bundles and fiber-preserving maps. The objective of this paper is to prove an equivariant analogue of Brown-Soderlund theorem result in the category of $G$-spaces and $G$-maps where $G$ is a finite group.
In this article we build a Quillen model category structure on the category of sequentially complete l.m.c.-C*-algebras such that the corresponding homotopy classes of maps Ho(A,B) for separable C*-algebras A and B coincide with the Kasparov groups KK(A,B). This answers an open question posed by Mark Hovey about the possibility of describing KK-theory for C*-algebras using the language of Quillen model categories.
We begin by showing that in a triangulated category, specifying a projective class is equivalent to specifying an ideal I of morphisms with certain properties, and that if I has these properties, then so does each of its powers. We show how a projective class leads to an Adams spectral sequence and give some results on the convergence and collapsing of this spectral sequence. We use this to study various ideals. In the stable homotopy category we examine phantom maps, skeletal phantom maps, superphantom maps, and ghosts. (A ghost is a map which induces the zero map of homotopy groups.) We show…
In our previous paper, we constructed and studied a functorial extension of the evaluation map $S^1 \times \mathcal{L}X \to X$ to transfers along finite covers. In this paper, we show that this induces a natural evaluation map on the full subcategory of the homotopy category of spectra consisting of $p$-completed classifying spectra of finite groups. To do this, we leverage the close relationship between this full subcategory and the Burnside category of fusion systems.
We construct an abelian category A(G) of sheaves over a category of closed subgroups of the r-torus G and show it is of finite injective dimension. It can be used as a model for rational $G$-spectra in the sense that there is a homology theory \piA_*: G-spectra/Q --> A(G) on rational G-spectra with values in A(G), and the associated Adams spectral sequence converges for all rational $G$-spectra and collapses at a finite stage.
We give bounds for the module sectional category of products of maps which generalise a theorem of Jessup for Lusternik-Schnirelmann category. We deduce also a proof of a Ganea type conjecture for topological complexity. This is a first step towards proving the Ganea conjecture for topological complexity in the rational context.
In this paper we introduce an open-closed cobordism category with maps to a background space. We identify the classifying space of this category for certain classes of background space. The key ingredient is the homology stability of mapping class groups with twisted coefficients.
We study properties of contiguity distance between simplicial maps. In particular, we show that simplicial versions of $LS$-category and topological complexity are particular cases of this more general notion.
We study the categories governing infinity (wheeled) properads. The graphical category, which was already known to be generalized Reedy, is in fact an Eilenberg-Zilber category. A minor alteration to the definition of the wheeled graphical category allows us to show that it is a generalized Reedy category. Finally, we present model structures for Segal properads and Segal wheeled properads.
We study the topological complexity of work maps with respect to some subspaces of the configuration space and a workspace considered as the target set of the motion of robots. The motivation is to optimize and reduce the number of motion planners for work maps. In this regard, we focus on the useful set of works. We check some basic properties of the targeted complexity of maps, such as homotopical invariance, reduction, the product of maps, and so on. Then we compare these targeted complexities, and we find some inequalities in reducing the number of motion planners. We show that the relativ…
Given a map of simplicial topological spaces, mild conditions on degeneracies and the levelwise maps imply that the geometric realization of the simplicial map is a cofibration. These conditions are not formal consequences of model category theory, but depend on properties of spaces, and similar results have not been available for any model for the stable homotopy category. In this paper we prove such results for symmetric spectra. Consequently, we get a set of conditions which ensure that the geometric realization of a map of simplicial symmetric spectra is a cofibration. These conditions are…
We show that the category of positive opetopes with contraction morphisms, i.e. all face maps and some degeneracies, forms a test category. The category of positive opetopic sets pOpeSet can be defined as a full subcategory of the category of polygraphs Poly. An object of pOpeSet has generators whose codomains are again generators and whose domains are non-identity cells (i.e. non-empty composition of generators). The category pOpeSet is a presheaf category with the exponent being called the category of positive opetopes pOpe. Objects of pOpe are called positive opetopes and morphisms are face…
We investigate the categories of weak maps associated to an algebraic weak factorisation system (AWFS) in the sense of Grandis-Tholen. For any AWFS on a category with an initial object, cofibrant replacement forms a comonad, and the category of (left) weak maps associated to the AWFS is by definition the Kleisli category of this comonad. We exhibit categories of weak maps as a kind of "homotopy category", that freely adjoins a section for every "acyclic fibration" (=right map) of the AWFS; and using this characterisation, we give an alternate description of categories of weak maps in terms of …
We show that both Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and topological complexity are particular cases of a more general notion, that we call homotopic distance between two maps. As a consequence, several properties of those invariants can be proved in a unified way and new results arise.
An action of A on X is a map F: AxX to X such that F|_X = id: X to X. The restriction F|_A: A to X of an action is called a cyclic map. Special cases of these notions include group actions and the Gottlieb groups of a space, each of which has been studied extensively. We prove some general results about actions and their Eckmann-Hilton duals. For instance, we classify the actions on an H-space that are compatible with the H-structure. As a corollary, we prove that if any two actions F and F' of A on X have cyclic maps f and f' with Omega(f) = Omega(f'), then Omega(F) and Omega(F') give the sam…
Let M be a monoidal category endowed with a distinguished class of weak equivalences and with appropriately compatible classifying bundles for monoids and comonoids. We define and study homotopy-invariant notions of normality for maps of monoids and of conormality for maps of comonoids in M. These notions generalize both principal bundles and crossed modules and are preserved by nice enough monoidal functors, such as the normaliized chain complex functor. We provide several explicit classes of examples of homotopy-normal and of homotopy-conormal maps, when M is the category of simplicial sets …
The level of a module over a differential graded algebra measures the number of steps required to build the module in an appropriate triangulated category. Based on this notion, we introduce a new homotopy invariant of spaces over a fixed space, called the level of a map. Moreover we provide a method to compute the invariant for spaces over a $\K$-formal space. This enables us to determine the level of the total space of a bundle over the 4-dimensional sphere with the aid of Auslander-Reiten theory for spaces due to Jørgensen. We also discuss the problem of realizing an indecomposable object i…
Amenable category is a variant of the Lusternik-Schnirelman category, based on covers by amenable open subsets. We study the monotonicity problem for degree-one maps and amenable category and the relation between amenable category and topological complexity.
The settings for homotopical algebra---categories such as simplicial groups, simplicial rings, $A_\infty$ spaces, $E_\infty$ ring spectra, etc.---are often equivalent to categories of algebras over some monad or triple $T$. In such cases, $T$ is acting on a nice simplicial model category in such a way that $T$ descends to a monad on the homotopy category and defines a category of homotopy $T$-algebras. In this setting there is a forgetful functor from the homotopy category of $T$-algebras to the category of homotopy $T$-algebras. Under suitable hypotheses we provide an obstruction theory, in t…
The Topological Representation Theorem for (oriented) matroids states that every (oriented) matroid can be realized as the intersection lattice of an arrangement of codimension one homotopy spheres on a homotopy sphere. In this paper, we use a construction of Engström to show that structure-preserving maps between matroids induce topological mappings between their representations; a result previously known only in the oriented case. Specifically, we show that weak maps induce continuous maps and that the process is a functor from the category of matroids with weak maps to the homotopy category…
In this work we propose a realization of Lurie's prediction that inner fibrations $p: X \rightarrow A$ are classified by $A$-indexed diagrams in a ``higher category" whose objects are $\infty$-categories, morphisms are correspondences between them and higher morphisms are higher correspondences. We will obtain this as a corollary of a more general result which classifies all simplicial maps between ordinary simplicial sets in a similar fashion. Correspondences between simplicial sets (and $\infty$-categories) are a generalization of the concept of profunctor (or bimodule) pertaining to categor…
Classically, there are two model category structures on coalgebras in the category of chain complexes over a field. In one, the weak equivalences are maps which induce an isomorphism on homology. In the other, the weak equivalences are maps which induce a weak equivalence of algebras under the cobar functor. We unify these two approaches, realizing them as the two extremes of a partially ordered set of model category structures on coalgebras over a cooperad satisfying mild conditions.
It is known that the existence of localization with respect to an arbitrary (possibly proper) class of maps in the category of simplicial sets is implied by a large-cardinal axiom called Vopenka's principle. In this article we extend the validity of this result to any left proper, combinatorial, simplicial model category $\cat M$ and show that, under additional assumptions on $\cat M$, every homotopy idempotent functor is in fact a localization with respect to some set of maps. These results are valid for the homotopy category of spectra, among other applications.
We consider the category of all locally Lipschitz contractible metric spaces and all locally Lipschitz maps, which is a wide class of metric spaces, including all finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces and all CAT spaces. We also consider the chain complex of normal currents with compact support in a metric space in the sense of Ambrosio and Kirchheim. In the present paper, its homology is proved to be a homotopy invariant on the category. To prove this result, we define a new topology on a space of Lipschitz maps between arbitrary metric spaces. This topology is proved to coincide with the usua…
In a previous paper we lifted Charles Rezk's complete Segal model structure on the category of simplicial spaces to a Quillen equivalent one on the category of "relative categories," and our aim in this successor paper is to obtain a more explicit description of the weak equivalences in this model structure by showing that these weak equivalences are exactly the DK-equivalences, i.e. those maps between relative categories which induce a weak equivalence between their simplicial localizations.
