The tri-layer La$_{3-3x}$Sr$_{1+3x}$Mn$_{3}$O$_{10}$ manganites of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) series are naturally arranged layered structure with alternate stacking of m-MnO$_2$ (m = 3) planes and rock-salt type block layers (La, Sr)$_2$O$_2$ along c-axis. The dimensionality of the RP series manganites depends on the number of perovskite layers and significantly affects the magnetic and transport properties of the system. The tri-layer La$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Mn$_{3}$O$_{10}$ shows second-order magnetic phase transition. The critical behavior of phase transition has been studied around the transition temperature (T$_C$) to understand the low dimensional magnetism in tri-layer La$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Mn$_{3}$O$_{10}$ of the Ruddlesden-Popper series manganites. We have determined the critical exponents for tri-layer La$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Mn$_{3}$O$_{10}$, which belong to the short-range two-dimensional (2D)-Ising universality class. The low dimensional magnetism in tri-layer La$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Mn$_{3}$O$_{10}$ manganite is also explained with the help of renormalization group theoretical approach for short-range 2D-Ising systems. It has been shown that the layered structure of tri-layer La$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Mn$_{3}$O$_{10}$ results in three different type of interactions intra-planer ($ J_{ab} $), intra-tri-layer ($ J_{c} $) and inter-tri-layer ($ J' $) such that $ J_{ab} $ $ > $ $ J_{c} $ $ >> $$ J' $ and competition among these give rise to the canted antiferromagnetic spin structure above T$ _{C} $. Based on the similar magnetic interaction in bi-layer manganite, we propose that the tri-layer La$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Mn$_{3}$O$_{10}$ should be able to host the skyrmion below T$ _{C} $ due to its strong anisotropy and layered structure.
The charge ordering in the bilayer manganite system La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with $0.30 \le x \le 0.50$ has been studied by neutron diffraction. The charge order is characterized by the propagation vector parallel to the [1 0 0] direction (MnO$_2$ direction), but the correlation length is short-ranged and extremely anisotropic, being $\sim 0.02a^{*}$ and $\sim 0.2a^{*}$ parallel and perpendicular to the modulation direction, respectively. The observed charge order can be viewed as a quasi-bi-stripe order, and accounts well for the $x$ dependence of the resistivity. The quasi-bistr…
We use a two-orbital double-exchange model including Jahn-Teller lattice distortions, superexchange interactions, and long-range Coulomb (LRC) interactions to investigate the origin of magnetically disordered interfaces between ferromagnetic metallic (FM) and antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) manganites in FM/AFI superlattices. The induced magnetic moment in the AFI layer varies non-monotonically with increasing AFI layer width as seen in the experiment. We provide a framework for understanding this non-monotonic behavior which has a one-to-one correspondence with the magnetization of the FM …
Strong Coulomb repulsion and spin-orbit coupling are known to give rise to exotic physical phenomena in transition metal oxides. Initial attempts to investigate systems where both of these fundamental interactions are comparably strong, such as 3d and 5d complex oxide superlattices, have revealed properties that only slightly differ from the bulk ones of the constituent materials. Here, we observe that the interfacial coupling between the 3d antiferromagnetic insulator SrMnO3 and the 5d paramagnetic metal SrIrO3 is enormously strong, yielding an anomalous Hall response as the result of charge …
We measured the magnetization depth profile of a (La1-xPrx)1-yCayMnO3 (x = 0.60\pm0.04, y = 0.20\pm0.03) film as a function of applied bending stress using polarized neutron reflectometry. From these measurements we obtained a coupling coefficient relating strain to the depth dependent magnetization. We found application of compressive (tensile) bending stress along the magnetic easy axis increases (decreases) the magnetization of the film.
Femtosecond (fs)-resolved simultaneous measurements of charge and spin dynamics reveal the coexistence of two different quasi-particle excitations in colossal magneto-resistive (CMR) manganites, with {\em fs} and {\em ps} relaxation times respectively. Their populations reverse size above a {\em photoexcitation-intensity-threshold} coinciding with a "sudden" antiferro-to-ferromagnetic switching during $<$100 fs laser pulses. We present evidence that fast, metallic, mobile quasi--electrons dressed by {\em quantum spin fluctuations} coexist with slow, localized, polaronic charge carriers in non-…
An oxide heterostructure made of manganite bilayers and ferroelectric perovskites is predicted to lead to the full control of magnetism when switching the ferroelectric polarizations. By using asymmetric polar interfaces in the superlattices, more electrons occupy the Mn layer at the $n$-type interface side than at the $p$-type side. This charge disproportionation can be enhanced or suppressed by the ferroelectric polarization. Quantum model and density functional theory calculations reach the same conclusion: a ferromagnetic-ferrimagnetic phase transition with maximal change $>90%$ of the tot…
Despite extensive researches on manganites owing to widespread use in modern electronics, this class of metal oxides does not cease to surprise with its unique properties and new phenomena. Here we have studied structural and magnetic properties of non-Heisenberg manganite nanoparticles with a strong spin-electron coupling. During transition from low temperature ferromagnetic to high temperature paramagnetic state, the change in charge, valence and spin (magnetic moment) with the localization of eg-electrons on the manganese ions have been detected. With decrease in a temperature, the overstat…
Optical control of magnetism, of interest for high-speed data processing and storage, has only been demonstrated with near-infrared excitation to date. However, in absorbing materials, such high photon energies can lead to significant dissipation, making switch back times long and miniaturization challenging. In manganites, magnetism is directly coupled to the lattice, as evidenced by the response to external and chemical pressure, or to ferroelectric polarization. Here, femtosecond mid-infrared pulses are used to excite the lattice in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 and the dynamics of electronic order are me…
We report a neutron powder diffraction study of $R$Mn$_7$O$_{12}$ quadruple perovskite manganites with $R$ = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, and Eu. We show that in all measured compounds concomitant magnetic ordering of the $A$ and $B$ manganese sublattices occurs on cooling below the N$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$el temperature. The respective magnetic structures are collinear, with one uncompensated Mn$^{3+}$ moment per formula unit as observed in bulk magnetisation measurements. We show that both LaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ and NdMn$_7$O$_{12}$ undergo a second magnetic phase transition at low temperature, which introduces a…
We study the effect of quenched disorder on the ordering of orbital and magnetic degrees of freedom in a two-dimensional, two-band double-exchange model for $e_g$ electrons coupled to Jahn-Teller distortions. Using a real-space Monte Carlo method, we find that disorder can induce a short-range ordering of the orbital degrees of freedom near 30% hole doping. The most striking consequence of this short range ordering is a strong increase in the low temperature resistivity. The real-space approach allows to analyze the spatial patterns of the charge, orbital, and magnetic degrees of freedom, and …
In this work we study the Double Exchange-Holstein (DE-H) model with an electron-phonon interaction $γ$ coupled to magnetism. The analysis is performed combining a mean-field approximation for the double exchange interaction and the Lang-Firsov transformation for the electron-phonon interaction. Discontinuous magnetic transitions appear when the dependence of $g$ with $m$ is sufficiently large, resembling those experimentally observed in manganites. We observe that the characteristic resistivity peak that arises near the critical temperature appears for broad ranges of the system parameter val…
The single crystalline form of an insulator, Sr$_3$CuIrO$_{6+δ}$, is shown to exhibit unexpectedly more than one magnetic transition (at 5 and 19 K) with spin-glass-like magnetic susceptibility behaviour. On the basis of this finding, viz., inhomogeneous magnetism in a chemically homogeneous material, we propose that the idea of "phase- separation" described for manganites [1] is more widespread in different ways. The observed experimental features enable us to make a comparison with the predictions of a recent toy model [2] on {\it magnetic} phase separation in an insulating environment.
Correlation between orbital structure and magnetic ordering in bilayered manganites is examined. A level separation between the $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals in a Mn ion is calculated in the ionic model for a large number of the compounds. It is found that the relative stability of the orbitals dominates the magnetic transition temperatures as well as the magnetic structures. A mechanism of the correlation between orbital and magnetism is investigated based on the theoretical model with the two $e_g$ orbitals under strong electron correlation.
We present the results of muon-spin relaxation (muSR) measurements on the hexagonal manganite HoMnO3. Features in the temperature-dependent relaxation rate, lambda, correlate with the magnetic transitions at 76 K, 38 K and 34 K. The highest temperature transition, associated with the ordering of Mn3+ moments has the largest effect on lambda. The application of a static electric field of E=10^4 Vm^-1 below T=50 K causes a small reduction in lambda which is suggestive of coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic domain walls in the ordered state of the material.
We use ab initio electronic structure calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA+U) to density functional theory (DFT) to determine the microscopic exchange interactions in the series of orthorhombic rare-earth manganites, o-$R$MnO$_3$. Our motivation is to construct a model Hamiltonian (excluding effects due to spin-orbit coupling), which can provide an accurate description of the magnetism in these materials. First, we consider TbMnO$_3$, which exhibits a spiral magnetic order at low temperatures. We map the exchange couplings in this compound onto a Heisenberg Hamiltoni…
To understand the near-interface magnetism in manganites, uniform, ultra-thin films of La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_3 were grown epitaxially on single crystal (001) LaAlO_3 and (110) NdGaO_3 substrates. The temperature and magnetic field dependent film resistance is used to probe the film's structural and magnetic properties. A surface and/or interface related dead-layer is inferred from the thickness dependent resistance and magnetoresistance. The total thickness of the dead layer is estimated to be $\sim 30 Å$ for films on NdGaO_3 and $\sim 50 Å$ for films on LaAlO_3.
The phenomenon of colossal magnetoresistance in manganites is generally agreed to be a result of competition between crystal phases with different electronic, magnetic, and structural order; a competition which can be strong enough to cause phase separation between metallic ferromagnet and insulating charge modulated states. Nevertheless, closer inspection of phase diagrams in many manganites reveals complex phases where the two order parameters of magnetism and charge modulation unexpectedly coexist. Here we show that such experiments can be naturally explained within a phenomenological Ginzb…
We present a comparison of the in-plane length scale over which charge and magnetism are correlated in (La0.4Pr0.6)1-xCaxMnO3 films with x = 0.33 and 0.375, across the metal to insulator transition (MIT) temperature. We combine electrical transport (resistance) measurements, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and specular/off-specular x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) measurements as a function of temperature to elucidate relationships between electronic, magnetic and morphological structure of the thin films. Using off-specular XRMS we obtai…
We have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of Co-doped Pr0.8Ca0.2MnO3 thin films using various spectroscopic techniques. X-ray absorption and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy revealed that the substituted Co ions are in the divalent state, resulting in hole doping on the Mn atoms. Studies of element-selective magnetic properties by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism found a large orbital magnetic moment for the Co ions. These spectroscopic studies reveal that the substituted Co ions play several roles of hole doping for Mn, ferromagnetic superexchange coupling between the …
The effect of x-rays on an orbital and charge ordered epitaxial film of a Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is presented. As the film is exposed to x-rays, the antiferromagnetic response increases and concomitantly the conductivity of the film improve. These results are discussed in terms of a persistent x-ray induced doping, leading to a modification of the magnetic structure. This effect allows writing electronic and magnetic domains in the film and represents a novel way of manipulating magnetism.
We report on an investigation of the double-layer manganite series (La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 (0 <= z <= 1), carried out on single crystals by means of both macroscopic magnetometry and local probes of magnetism (muSR, 55Mn NMR). Muons and NMR demonstrate an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state at non-ferromagnetic compositions (z >= 0.6), while more moderate Pr substitutions (0.2 <= z <= 0.4) induce a spin reorientation transition within the ferromagnetic phase. A large magnetic susceptibility is detected at {Tc,TN} < T < 250K at all compositions. From 55Mn NMR spectroscopy, such a res…
We have utilized the resonant x-ray diffraction technique at the Mn L-edge in order to directly compare magnetic and orbital correlations in the Mn sub-lattice of Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3. The resonant line shape is measured below T_OO ~ 240 K at the orbital ordering wave vector (0,1/2,0), and below T_N ~ 175 K at the antiferromagnetic wave vector (1/2,0,0). Comparing the width of the super-lattice peaks at the two wavevectors, we find that the correlation length of the magnetism exceeds that of the orbital order by nearly a factor of two. Furthermore, we observe a large (~ 3 eV) shift in spectral weigh…
High resolution neutron diffraction shows that the mesoscopic separation into ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases and the FM transition temperature T_C in the perovskite manganite (La_{1-y}Pr_{y})_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3 strongly depend on the quenched correlated disorder. The different disorder strengths are achieved by different procedures of the sample synthesis and quantitatively characterized by the micro-strain-type diffraction peak broadening. The system shifts to predominantly one phase state with smaller T_C as the correlated disorder strength is decreased supporting the …
The proximity effect in a model manganite-cuprate system is investigated theoretically. We consider a situation in which spin-polarized electrons in manganite layers antiferromagnetically couple with electrons in cuprate layers as observed experimentally. The effect of the interfacial magnetic coupling is found to be much stronger than the injection of spin-polarized electrons into the cuprate region. As a result, the superconducting transition temperature depends on the thickness of the cuprate layer significantly. Since the magnetic coupling creates {\em negative} spin polarization, an appli…
Magnetic rare earths R have been proven to have a significant effect on the multiferroic properties of the orthorhombic manganites RMnO3. A re-examination of previous results from synchrotron based x-ray scattering experiments suggests that symmetric exchange striction between neighboring R and Mn ions may account for the enhancement of the ferroelectric polarization in DyMnO3 as well as the magnetic-field induced ferroelectricity in GdMnO3. In general, adding a second magnetic species to a multiferroic material may be a route to enhance its ferroelectric properties.
The magnetic nature of the B-site dopants controls the magnetic phases in B-site doped manganites RE$_{1-x}$AE$_{x}$Mn$_{1-η}$B$_η$O$_3$. Different B-site dopants of equal valence, doped into the same reference manganite, lead to different magnetic phases at low temperature, which can not be explained using the valence change scenario. We focus on trivalent B-site dopants in CE-CO-OO-I manganites at half-filling $x=0.50$ to study the role of magnetic interactions between the B-site dopants and the neighboring Mn-sites by using a two-orbital double-exchange model including super-exchange intera…
We investigate the possibility of controlling the magnetic phase transition of the heterointerface between a half-doped manganite La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ and a multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ through magnetoelectric coupling. Using macroscopic magnetometry and element-selective x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Fe \emph{L}-edges, we discover that the ferroelectric polarization of BFO controls simultaneously the magnetization of BFO and LCMO. X-ray absorption spectra at oxygen \emph{K}-edge and linear dichroism at Mn \emph{L}-edge suggest that the interfacial coupling is mainly der…
Using time-of-flight and triple-axis inelastic neutron spectroscopy, we determine spin wave excitations throughout the Brillouin zone for ferromagnetic manganites La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x=0.25,0.3$) in their low temperature metallic states. While spin wave excitations in the long wavelength limit (spin stiffness $D$) have similar values for both compounds, the excitations near the Brillouin zone boundary of La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ are considerable softened in all symmetry directions compared to that of La$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$. A Heisenberg model with the nearest neighbor and the f…
The nature of the magnetic order in (La2/3Sr1/3MnO3)9/(LaNiO3)3 superlattices is investigated using x-ray resonant magnetic reflectometry. We observe a new c-axis magnetic helix state in the (LaNiO3)3 layers that had never been reported in nickelates, and which mediates the ~130deg magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic (La2/3Sr1/3MnO3)9 layers, illustrating the power of x-rays for discovering the magnetic state of complex oxide interfaces. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy show that Ni-O ligand hole states from bulk LaNiO3 are mostly filled due to inte…
Spin-orbit coupling in magnetic systems lacking inversion symmetry can give rise to non trivial spin textures. Magnetic thin films and heterostructures are potential candidates for the formation of skyrmions and other non-collinear spin configurations as inversion symmetry is inherently lost at their surfaces and interfaces. However, manganites, in spite of their extraordinarily rich magnetic phase diagram, have not yet been considered of interest within this context as their spin-orbit coupling is assumed to be negligible. We demonstrate here, by means of angular dependent X-ray linear dichro…
Through a combination of neutron diffraction and Landau theory we describe the spin ordering in the ground state of the quadruple perovskite manganite CaMn7O12 - a magnetic multiferroic supporting an incommensurate orbital density wave that onsets above the magnetic ordering temperature, TN1 = 90 K. The multi-k magnetic structure in the ground state was found to be a nearly-constant-moment helix with modulated spin helicity, which oscillates in phase with the orbital occupancies on the Mn3+ sites via trilinear magneto-orbital coupling. Our phenomenological model also shows that, above TN2 = 48…
Recently, based on the refined crystal structure of Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 from neutron diffraction, Daoud-Aladine et al.[PRL89,97205(2002)] have proposed a new ground state structure for the half-doped manganites R0.5Ca0.5MnO3, where R is a trivalent ion like Bi,La,Pr,Sm or Y. Their proposal describes the CE magnetic structure attributed to these materials as an arrangement of dimers along the ferromagnetic Mn zig-zag chains that form it. However, the dimers' proposal is in conflict with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson rules, which give a coherent description of many transition metal insulating comp…
Improper ferroelectricity (trimerization) in the hexagonal manganites RMnO$_3$ leads to a network of coupled structural and magnetic vortices that induce domain wall magnetoelectricity and magnetization neither of which, however, occurs in the bulk. Here we combined first-principles calculations, group-theoretic techniques, and microscopic spin models to show how the trimerization not only induces a polarization but also a bulk magnetization and bulk magnetoelectric (ME) effect. This results in the existence of a bulk linear ME vortex structure or a bulk ME coupling such that if direction of p…
We investigate the interplay between spin and orbital correlations in monolayer and bilayer manganites using an effective spin-orbital t-J model which treats explicitly the e_g orbital degrees of freedom coupled to classical t_{2g} spins. Using finite clusters with periodic boundary conditions, the orbital many-body problem is solved by exact diagonalization, either by optimizing spin configuration at zero temperature, or by using classical Monte-Carlo for the spin subsystem at finite temperature. In undoped two-dimensional clusters, a complementary behavior of orbital and spin correlations is…
A model of chemical bonding between ions in manganites involving covalent one-electron $σ$ bonding is suggested. The covalent one-electron $σ$ bonding gives rise to a strongly correlated state of electrons resulting from the exchange interaction between electrons when they are simultaneously at cation and anion orbitals. The manifestation of the correlatred state is the spin and spatial ordering of the electrons resulting in the formation of a spin- ordered electron lattice. The conductivity of manganites in this model is the consequence of displacement of the electron lattice (or its part) fr…
We report the magnetic properties of compounds in the KBaRE(BO3)2 family (RE= Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb), materials with a planar triangular lattice composed of rare earth ions. The samples were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and crystallize in the space group R-3m. Physical property measurements indicate the compounds display predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions between spins without any signs of magnetic ordering above 1.8 K. The ideal 2D rare earth triangular layers in this structure type make it a potential model system for investigating magnetic frustration in rare-earth-b…
We use a non-equilibrium many-body theory that engages the elements of transient coherence, correlation, and nonlinearity to describe changes in the magnetic and electronic phases of strongly correlated systems induced by femtosecond nonlinear photoexcitation. Using a generalized tight--binding mean field approach based on Hubbard operators and including the coupling of the laser field, we describe a mechanism for simultaneous insulator--to--metal and anti-- to ferro--magnetic transition to a transient state triggered by non-thermal ultrafast spin and charge coupled excitations. We demontrate,…
We investigate the anisotropic triangular lattice that interpolates from decoupled one-dimensional chains to the isotropic triangular lattice and has been suggested to be relevant for various quasi-two-dimensional materials, such as Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ or $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, an organic material that shows intriguing magnetic properties. We obtain an excellent accuracy by means of a novel representation for the resonating valence bond wave function with both singlet and triplet pairing. This approach allows us to establish that the magnetic order is rapidly destroyed away from the pure trian…
Tailoring spin-orbit interactions and Coulomb repulsion are the key features to observe exotic physical phenomena such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture at oxide interfaces. Our study proposes a novel platform for engineering the magnetism and spin-orbit coupling at LaMnO3/SrIrO3 (3d-5d oxide) interfaces by tuning the LaMnO3 growth conditions which controls the lattice displacement and spin-correlated interfacial coupling through charge transfer. We report on a tunable and enhanced interface-induced Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Elliot-Yafet spin relaxation mechanism in LaMn…
There has been tremendous research activity in the field of magneto-electric (ME) multiferroics after Kimura et al. [1] showed that antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric order coexist in orthorhom- bically distorted perovskite TbMnO3 and are strongly coupled. It is now generally accepted that ferroelectricity in TbMnO3 is induced by magnetic long range order that breaks the symmetry of the crystal and creates a polar axis [2]. One remaining key question is whether magnetic order can induce ferroelectric polarization that is as large as that of technologically useful materials. We show that ferro…
Motivated by recent progress on quantum engineered Kondo lattices, we numerically investigated the local magnetic properties of a hexagonal Anderson droplet consisting of multiple rings of magnetic atoms periodically arrayed on a triangular lattice. We demonstrated the tunability of the magnetic properties via their evolution with the droplet geometry for two types of systems with distinct local orbital occupancy profile. We found that the local susceptibility of the droplet center of some types of droplets can be remarkably enhanced in contrast to the conventionally rapid decrease due to spin…
We study the orbitally frustrated singlet-triplet models that emerge in the context of spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators with $t_{2g}^4$ electronic configuration. In these compounds, low-energy magnetic degrees of freedom can be cast in terms of three-flavor "triplon" operators describing the transitions between spin-orbit entangled $J=0$ ionic ground state and excited $J=1$ levels. In contrast to a conventional, flavor-isotropic O(3) singlet-triplet models, spin-orbit entangled triplon interactions are flavor-and-bond selective and thus highly frustrated. In a honeycomb lattice, we find clos…
Effective field theory of magnetic and resistive properties of manganites with account of strong Hund exchange coupling and electron-phonon interactions has been evolved under the strong Hund coupling condition. In parallel with Lang-Firsov unitary transformation of the zeroth Hamiltonian, we have realized the diagonalization of Hund's Hamiltonian neglecting the upper triplet. The diagram techniques taking into account the quantum spin fluctuations of lower quintet and hole state with spin S=3/2 was developed. The magnetic structure of the ground state and an influence of electron-phonon inter…
α-SrCr2O4 has a triangular planar lattice of d3 Cr3+ made from edge sharing CrO6 octahedra; the plane shows a very small orthorhombic distortion from hexagonal symmetry. With a Weiss temperature of -596 K and a three-dimensional magnetic ordering temperature of 43 K, the magnetic system is quasi two-dimensional and frustrated. Neutron powder diffraction shows that the ordered state is an incommensurate helical magnet, with an in-plane propagation vector of k = (0,0.3217(8),0). Temperature dependent synchrotron powder diffraction characterization of the structure shows an increase in the inter-…
We discuss the magnetic properties of a dimerized and completely frustrated tetrahedral spin-1/2 chain. Using a combination of exact diagonalization and bond-operator theory the quantum phase diagram is shown to incorporate a singlet-product, a dimer, and a Haldane phase. In addition we consider one-, and two-triplet excitations in the dimer phase and evaluate the magnetic Raman cross section which is found to be strongly renormalized by the presence of a two-triplet bound state. The link to a novel tellurate materials is clarified.
Magnetic properties of a completely frustrated tetrahedral chain are briefly summarized. Using exact diagonalization, and bond-operator theory results for the ground-state phase diagram, the one-triplet excitations and the Raman spectrum are given. The link to novel tellurate materials is clarified.

The complicated electronic, magnetic, and colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) properties of Sr and Ca doped lanthanum manganites can be understood by spin-polarized first-principles calculations. The electronic properties can be attributed to a detailed balancing between Sr and Ca induced metal-like O 2p and majority-spin (majority-spin) Mn eg delocalized states and the insulator-like minority-spin (minority-spin) Mn t2g band near the Fermi level (EF). The magnetic properties can be attributed to a detailed balancing between O mediated antiferromagnetic superexchange and delocalized majority-spin …
We investigate the behavior of ultrasharp metamagnetic transitions in La(5/8-y)Nd(y)Ca(3/8)MnO(3) manganites. These compounds change from a low temperature ferromagnetic metallic state at low Nd doping to a charge-ordered antiferromagnetic insulator for high Nd content. At an intermediate doping a phase-separated state is established. At low temperatures (2 K), we observe an avalanche-like field-induced metamagnetic transition, when the entire compound changes abruptly from one phase to the other. We investigate the signatures of this ultrasharp transition using magnetization and specific heat…
We consider a system of 2D fermions on a triangular lattice with well separated electron and hole pockets of similar sizes, centered at certain high-symmetry-points in the Brillouin zone. We first analyze Stoner-type spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetism. We show that SDW order is degenerate at the mean-field level. Beyond mean-field, the degeneracy is lifted and is either $120^{\circ}$ "triangular" order (same as for localized spins), or a collinear order with antiferromagnetic spin arrangement on two-thirds of sites, and non-magnetic on the rest of sites. We also study a time-reversal symmetric …
Magnetism of Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br single crystals based on a triangular lattice is studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, pulsed-field magnetization, and specific heat measurements. There are two inequivalent Cu$^{2+}$ sites in an asymmetric unit. Both Cu$^{2+}$ sublattices undergo a long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at $T\rm_N$ = 9.3 K. Upon cooling, an anisotropy crossover from Heisenberg to $XY$ behavior is observed below 7.5 K from the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic field applied within the $XY$ plane induces a spin-flop transition of Cu$^{2+}$ ions between 4.9 …
Modulation of charge carrier dynamics and hence electrical conductivity of solids by photoexcitation has been a rich field of research with numerous applications. Similarly, electric and magnetic field assisted enhancement of conductivity are of fundamental importance and technological use. Hole doped manganites of the type (A$_{1-x}$B$_{x})$MnO$_{3}$, where A and B are rare and alkaline earth metals respectively have the distinction of showing all three effects. Here we establish the complementarity of the electric, magnetic and photon fields in driving an insulator-metal transition in epitax…
The physics of manganites appears to be dominated by phase competition among ferromagnetic metallic and charge-ordered antiferromagnetic insulating states. Previous investigations (Burgy {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 277202 (2001)) have shown that quenched disorder is important to smear the first-order transition between those competing states, and induce nanoscale inhomogeneities that produce the colossal magnetoresistance effect. Recent studies (Motome {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 167204 (2003)) have provided further evidence that disorder is important in the manganite …
