We optimize multilayered anti-reflective coatings for photovoltaic devices, using modern evolutionary algorithms. We apply a rigorous methodology to show that a given structure, which is particularly regular, emerge spontaneously in a very systematical way for a very broad range of conditions. The very regularity of the structure allows for a thorough physical analysis of how the designs operate. This allows to understand that the central part is a photonic crystal utilized as a buffer for light, and that the external layers have the purpose of reducing the impedance mismatch between the outer media and the Bloch mode supported by the photonic crystal. This shows how optimization can suggest new design rules and be considered as a source of inspiration. Finally, we fabricate these structures with easily deployable techniques.
Metasurfaces possess vast wave-manipulation capabilities, including reflection and refraction of a plane wave into non-standard directions. This requires meticulously-designed sub-wavelength meta-atoms in each period of the metasurface which guarantee unitary coupling to the desired Floquet-Bloch mode or, equivalently, suppression of the coupling to other modes. Herein, we propose an entirely different scheme to achieve such suppression, alleviating the need to devise and realize such dense scrupulously-engineered polarizable particles. Extending the concept of anti-reflective coatings to enab…
We use a state-of-the-art optimization algorithm combined with a careful methodology to find optimal anti-reflective coatings. Our results show that ultra thin structures (less than $300 \,nm$ thick) outperform much thicker gradual patterns as well as traditional interferential anti-reflective coatings. These optimal designs actually combine a gradual increase of the refractive index with patterns meant to leverage interferential effects. Contrarily to gradual patterns, they do not require extremely low refractive index materials, so that they can actually be fabricated. Using a cheap and easi…
Over the last decade, plasmonic antireflecting nanostructures have been extensively studied to be utilized in various optical and optoelectronic systems such as lenses, solar cells, photodetectors, and others. The growing interest to all-dielectric photonics as an alternative optical technology along with plasmonics motivates us to compare antireflection properties of all-dielectric and plasmonic nanoparticle coatings based on silver and crystalline silicon. Our results of numerical simulations for periodic arrays of spherical nanoparticles on top of amorphous silicon show that both silicon an…
Omega bianisotropic metasurfaces (OBMS) provide wave-control capabilities not previously available with Huygens' metasurfaces (HMS). These enhanced capabilities derive from the additional degree of freedom provided by OBMS, and are based on analyses of zero-thickness surfaces with abstract surface impedance properties. However, the design of practical metasurfaces has proven tedious. Herein, we propose a novel, easily designed structure to realize OBMSs. Extending our previous work, we show that an asymmetrical cascade of two judiciously engineered Fabry-Perot (FP) etalons could form an OBMS m…
Broadband and omnidirectional antireflection coating is a generally effective way to improve solar cell efficiency, because the destructive interference between the reflected and input waves could maximize transmission light in the absorption layer. Several theoretical calculations have been developed to optimize the anti-reflective coating to maximize the average transmittance. However, the solar irradiances of the clear sky spectral direct beam on a receiver plane at different positions and times are variable greatly. Here we report a new theoretical calculation of anti-reflective coating wi…
Future laser-interferometric gravitational wave detectors (GWDs) will potentially employ test mass mirrors from crystalline silicon and a laser wavelength of $1550\,\rm{nm}$, which corresponds to a photon energy below the silicon bandgap. Silicon might also be an attractive high-refractive index material for the dielectric mirror coatings. Films of amorphous silicon (a-Si), however, have been found to be significantly more absorptive at $1550\,\rm{nm}$ than crystalline silicon (c-Si). Here, we investigate the optical absorption of a Si/SiO$_2$ dielectric coating produced with the ion plating t…
Three-dimensional direct laser writing via two photon polymerization is used to fabricate anti-reflective structured surfaces composed of sub-wavelength conicoid features optimized to operate over a wide bandwidth in the near-infrared range from 3700 cm$^{-1}$ to 6600 cm$^{-1}$ (2.7 to 1.52 $μ$m). Analytic Bruggemann effective medium calculations are used to predict nominal geometric parameters such as the fill factor of the constitutive conicoid features of the anti-reflective structured surfaces presented here. The performance of the anti-reflective structured surfaces was investigated exper…
A methodology is proposed for finding structures that are, optically speaking, locally optimal : a physical analysis of much simpler structures is used to constrain the optimization process. The obtained designs are based on a flat amorphous silicon layer (to minimize recombination) with a patterned anti-reflective coating made of ITO or ZnO, or a composite ITO/ZnO coating. These latter structures are realistic and present good performances despite very thin active layers.
While various nanophotonic structures applicable to relatively thin crystalline silicon-based solar cells were proposed to ensure effective light in-coupling and light trapping in the absorber, it is of great importance to evaluate their performance on the solar module level under realistic irradiation conditions. Here, we analyze the annual energy yield of relatively thin heterojunction (HJT) solar module architectures when optimized anti-reflective and light trapping titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) nanodisk square arrays are applied on the front and rear cell interfaces. Our numerical study shows…
The absorption of electromagnetic radiation by a planar structure, consisting of a three-layer dielectric-metal-dielectric coating on a metal back-reflector is analysed. The conditions for total absorption are derived. Our analysis shows that, in contrast with bi-layer structures, the calculated layer thicknesses are feasible to fabricate for any metal. The proposed absorber design is of potential use in infrared and longer wavelength detectors and for radiant energy harvesting devices.
In this paper a theory of reflective X-ray multilayer structures with a graded (slowly varying) period based on the coupled waves method and quasi-classical asymptotic expansions is reported. A number of exact solutions of the coupled wave equations is obtained and analyzed demonstrating suitability of this method for the description of the reflective properties of the graded multilayers. The developed theory is then used as a basis for the solution of the inverse problem, i.e. designing multilayer structures with a pre-specified reflectivity dependence on the wavelength or grazing angle. A nu…
Photonic hook (PH) is a new type of artificial self-bending beam focused by a dielectric particle-lens with a curved waist smaller than the wavelength, which has the potential to revolutionize mesoscale photonics in many applications, e.g., optical trapping, signal switching, imaging, etc. In this paper, we discover a new mechanism that the highly curved PHs can be realised by the light interaction with the fully or partially metal-coated microchannels. The generated W-shaped and J-shaped PHs have bending angles exceeding 80-degree. Compared to other PH setups, the proposed design has a larger…
Optical multilayer coatings of high-reflective mirrors significantly determine the properties of Fabry-Perot resonators. Thermal (Brownian) noise in these coatings produce excess phase noise which can seriously degrade the sensitivity of high-precision measurements with these cavities, in particular in laser gravitational-wave antennas (for example project LIGO), where at the current stage it is one of the main limiting factors. We present a method to calculate this effect accurately and analyze different strategies to diminish it by optimizing the coating. Traditionally this noise is calculat…

Nature features a plethora of extraordinary photonic architectures that have been optimized through natural evolution. While numerical optimization is increasingly and successfully used in photonics, it has yet to replicate any of these complex naturally occurring structures. Using evolutionary algorithms directly inspired by natural evolution, we have retrieved emblematic natural photonic structures, indicating how such regular structures might have spontaneously emerged in nature and to which precise optical or fabrication constraints they respond. Comparisons between algorithms show that re…
