We construct an effective Floquet lattice model for the triangular network that emerges in interlayer-biased minimally twisted bilayer graphene and which supports two chiral channels per link for a given valley and spin. We introduce the Floquet scheme with the one-channel triangular network and subsequently extend it to the two-channel case. From the bulk topological index (winding number) and finite system calculations, we find that both cases host anomalous Floquet insulators (AFIs) with a different gap-opening mechanism. In the one-channel network, either time-reversal or in-plane inversion symmetry has to be broken to open a gap. In contrast, in the two-channel network, interchannel coupling can open a gap without breaking these symmetries yielding a valley AFI with counterpropagating edge states. This phase is topologically trivial with respect to the total winding number but robust in the absence of intervalley scattering. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the Floquet model with magnetotransport calculations.
We explore the Floquet band-structure and electronic transport in laser-illuminated bilayer graphene. By using a bias voltage perpendicular to the graphene bilayer we show how to get one-way charge and valley transport among two unbiased leads. In contrast to quantum pumping, our proposal uses a different mechanism based on generating a non-reciprocal bandstructure with a built-in directionality. The Floquet states at one edge of a graphene layer become hybridized with the continuum on the other layer, and so the resulting bandstructure allows for one-way transport as in an \textit{isolator}. …
We show how transitions between different Lifshitz phases in bilayer Dirac materials with and without spin-orbit coupling can be studied by driving the system. The periodic driving is induced by a laser and the resultant phase diagram is studied in the high frequency limit using the Brillouin-Wigner perturbation approach to leading order. The examples of such materials include bilayer graphene and spin-orbit coupled materials such as bilayer silicene. The phase diagrams of the effective static models are analyzed to understand the interplay of topological phase transitions, with changes in the…
We derive effective Floquet Hamiltonians for twisted bilayer graphene driven by circularly polarized light in two different regimes beyond the weak-drive, high frequency regime. First, we consider a driving protocol relevant for experiments with frequencies smaller than the bandwidth and weak amplitudes and derive an effective Hamiltonian, which through a symmetry analysis, provides analytical insight into the rich effects of the drive. We find that circularly polarized light at low frequencies can selectively decrease the strength of AA-type interlayer hopping while leaving the AB-type unaffe…
We introduce a new approach that allows one complete control over the modulation of the effective twist angle change in few-layer van der Waals heterostructures by irradiating them with longitudinal waves of light at the end of a waveguide. As a specific application, we consider twisted bilayer graphene and show that one can tune the magic angles to be either larger or smaller, allowing in-situ experimental control of the phase diagram of this and other related materials. A waveguide allows one to circumvent the free-space constraints on the absence of longitudinal electric field components of…

Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect, the well-known archetype of electron-wave interference phenomena, has been explored extensively through transport measurements. However, these techniques lack spatial resolution that would be indispensable for studying the magnetic and electrostatic AB oscillations at the nanometer scale. Here, we demonstrated that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can be used as an AB interferometer operating on nanometer length scales and the magneto-electric Aharonov-Bohm effect in minimally twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) was directly measured by using STM. In the minimally TBG,…
In minimally twisted bilayer graphene, a moir{é} pattern consisting of AB and BA stacking regions separated by domain walls forms. These domain walls are predicted to support counterpropogating topologically protected helical (TPH) edge states when the AB and BA regions are gapped. We fabricate designer moir{é} crystals with wavelengths longer than 50 nm and demonstrate the emergence of TPH states on the domain wall network by scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. We observe a double-line profile of the TPH states on the domain walls, only occurring when the AB and BA regions are gappe…
We investigate transport in the network of valley Hall states that emerges in minimally twisted bilayer graphene under interlayer bias. To this aim, we construct a scattering theory that captures the network physics. In the absence of forward scattering, symmetries constrain the network model to a single parameter that interpolates between one-dimensional chiral zigzag modes and pseudo-Landau levels. Moreover, we show how the coupling of zigzag modes affects magnetotransport. In particular, we find that scattering between parallel zigzag channels gives rise to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations that a…
We theoretically study the Hofstadter butterfly of a triangular network model in minimally twisted bilayer graphene (mTBLG). The band structure manifests periodicity in energy, mimicking that of Floquet systems. The butterfly diagrams provide fingerprints of the model parameters and reveal the hidden band topology. In a strong magnetic field, we establish that mTBLG realizes low-energy Floquet topological insulators (FTIs) carrying zero Chern number, while hosting chiral edge states in bulk gaps. We identify the FTIs by analyzing the nontrivial spectral flow in the Hofstadter butterfly, and by…
We study the electronic transport properties at the intersection of three topological zero-lines as the elementary current partition node that arises in minimally twisted bilayer graphene. Unlike the partition laws of two intersecting zero-lines, we find that (i) the incoming current can be partitioned into both left-right adjacent topological channels and that (ii) the forward-propagating current is nonzero. By tuning the Fermi energy from the charge-neutrality point to a band edge, the currents partitioned into the three outgoing channels become nearly equal. Moreover, we find that current p…
Quasi-periodic moiré patterns and their effect on electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) have been intensely studied. At small twist angle $θ$, due to atomic reconstruction, the moiré superlattice morphs into a network of narrow domain walls separating micron-scale AB and BA stacking regions. We use scanning probe photocurrent imaging to resolve nanoscale variations of the Seebeck coefficient occurring at these domain walls. The observed features become enhanced in a range of mid-infrared frequencies where the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which we use as a TBG substrate, is …
We construct a two-channel scattering model for the triangular network of valley Hall states in interlayer-biased minimally twisted bilayer graphene from symmetry arguments and investigate electronic transport in a four-terminal setup. In the absence of forward scattering, a single phenomenological parameter tunes the network between a triplet of chiral zigzag modes and pseudo-Landau levels. Moreover, the chiral zigzag modes give rise to robust Aharonov-Bohm resonances in the longitudinal conductance in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field or an in-plane electric field. Interestingly…
We investigate the topological properties of Floquet-engineered twisted bilayer graphene above the magic angle driven by circularly polarized laser pulses. Employing a full Moiré-unit-cell tight-binding Hamiltonian based on first-principles electronic structure we show that the band topology in the bilayer, at twisting angles above 1.05$^\circ$, essentially corresponds to the one of single-layer graphene. However, the ability to open topologically trivial gaps in this system by a bias voltage between the layers enables the full topological phase diagram to be explored, which is not possible in…
The parameters of the triangular domain wall network in bilayer graphene with a simultaneously twisted and biaxially stretched bottom layer are studied using the two-chain Frenkel-Kontorova model. It is demonstrated that if the graphene layers are free to rotate, they prefer to stay co-aligned upon stretching the bottom layer and the regular triangular network of tensile domain walls is formed upon the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition. If the angle between the layers is fixed, the regular triangular network of shear domain walls is observed at zero elongation of the bottom layer. U…
We derive a general relation between the stacking vector ${\bf u}$ describing the relative shift of two layers of bilayer graphene and the Chern index. We find $C = ν- \text{sign}\left(|V_{AB}|-|V_{BA}|\right)$, where $ν$ is a valley index and $|V_{αβ}|$ the absolute value of stacking potentials that depend on ${\bf u}$ and that uniquely determine the interlayer interaction; AA stacking plays no role in the topological character. With this expression we show that while ideal and relaxed minimally twisted bilayer graphene appear so distinct as to be almost different materials, their Chern index…
Motivated by the recent experimental realization of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) samples we study, both analytically and numerically, the effects of circularly polarized light propagating in free space and confined into a waveguide on the band structure and topological properties of these systems. These two complementary Floquet protocols allow us to selectively tune different parameters of the system by varying the intensity and the frequency of the light. For the drive protocol in free space, in the high-frequency regime, we find that in TDBG with AB/BA stacking, we can selectively…
We study theoretically AB-stacked honeycomb bilayers driven by light in resonance with an infrared phonon within a tight-binding description. We characterize the phonon properties of honeycomb bilayers with group theory and construct an electronic time-dependent tight-binding model for the system following photo-excitation in resonance with an infrared phonon. We adopt an "atomically adiabatic" approximation, introduced by Mohantya and Heller PNAS 116, 18316 (2019) to describe classically vibrating nuclei, but obtain the Floquet quasienergy spectrum associated with the time-dependent model exa…
We propose a tunable optical setup to engineer topologically nontrivial flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene under circularly polarized light. Using both analytical and numerical calculations, we demonstrate that nearly flat bands can be engineered at small twist angles near the magic angles of the static system. The flatness and the gaps between these bands can be tuned optically by varying laser frequency and amplitude. We study the effects of interlayer hopping variations on Floquet flat bands and find that lattice relaxation favors their formation. Furthermore, we find that, once formed,…
We study one-dimensional (1D) Floquet topological insulators with chiral symmetry going beyond the standard rotating wave approximation. The occurrence of many anticrossings between Floquet replicas leads to a dramatic extension of phase diagram regions with stable topological edge states (TESs). We present an explicit construction of all TESs in terms of a truncated Floquet Hamiltonian in frequency space, prove the bulk-boundary correspondence, and analyze the stability of the TESs in terms of their localization lengths. We propose experimental tests of our predictions in curved bilayer graph…
Motivated by the recent experimental realization of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers, we study a simplified model driven by different forms of monochromatic light. As a concrete and representative example we use parameters that correspond to a twisted MoTe$_2$ homobilayer. First, we consider irradiation with circularly polarized light in free space and demonstrate that the corresponding Floquet Hamiltonian takes the same form as the static Hamiltonian, only with a constant overall shift in quasi-energy. This is in stark contrast to twisted bilayer graphene, where new terms are …
We study phenomena driven by electron-electron interactions in the minimally twisted bilayer graphene (mTBLG) with a perpendicular electric field. The low-energy degrees of freedom in mTBLG are governed by a network of one-dimensional domain-wall states, described by two channels of one-dimensional linearly dispersing spin-1/2 fermions. We show that the interaction can realize a spin-gapped inter-channel charge density wave (CDW) state at low temperatures, forming a "Coulomb drag" between the channels and leaving only one charge conducting mode. For sufficiently high temperatures, power-law-in…
We show that Floquet engineering with circularly polarized light (CPL) can selectively split the valley degeneracy of a twisted multilayer graphene (TMG), and thus generate a controlled valley-polarized Floquet Chern flat band with tunable large Chern number. It offers a feasible optical way to manipulate the valley degree of freedom in moiré flat bands, and hence opens new opportunities to study the valleytronics of morié flat band systems. We thus expect that many of the valley-related properties of TMG, e.g. orbital ferromagnetism, can be switched by CPL with proper doping. We reveal a Cher…
We report on the effects of laser illumination on the electronic properties of bilayer graphene. By using Floquet theory combined with Green's functions we unveil the appeareance of laser-induced gaps not only at integer multiples of $\hbar Ω/2$ but also at the Dirac point with features which are shown to depend strongly on the laser polarization. Trigonal warping corrections are shown to lead to important corrections for radiation in the THz range, reducing the size of the dynamical gaps. Furthermore, our analysis of the topological properties at low energies reveals that when irradiated with…
We identify a mapping between two-dimensional (2D) electron transport in a minimally twisted graphene bilayer and a 1D quantum walk, where one spatial dimension plays the role of time. In this mapping a magnetic field B perpendicular to the bilayer maps onto an electric field. Bloch oscillations due to the periodic motion in a 1D Bloch band can then be observed in purely DC transport as magnetoconductance oscillations with periodicity set by the Bloch frequency.
We describe the gated bilayer graphene system when it is subjected to intense terahertz frequency electromagnetic radiation. We examine the electron band structure and density of states via exact diagonalization methods within Floquet theory. We find that dynamical states are induced which lead to modification of the band structure. We first examine the situation where there is no external magnetic field. In the unbiased case, dynamical gaps appear in the spectrum which manifest as dips in the density of states. For finite interlayer bias (where a static gap is present in the band structure of…
Theory predicts that the application of an electric field breaks the inversion symmetry of AB and BA stacked domains in twisted bilayer graphene, resulting in the formation of a triangular network of one-dimensional valley-protected helical states. This two-dimensional network of one-dimensional states has been observed in several studies, but direct experimental evidence that the electronic transport in these one-dimensional states is valley-protected is still lacking. In this study, we report the existence of the network in small-angle twisted bilayer graphene at room temperature. Moreover, …
Gapless bilayer graphene is susceptible to a variety of spontaneously gapped states. As predicted by theory and observed by experiment, the ground state is however topologically trivial, because a valley-independent gap is energetically favorable. Here, we show that under the application of interlayer electric field and circularly polarized light, one valley can be selected to exhibit the original interaction instability while the other is frozen out. Tuning this Floquet system stabilizes multiple competing topological ordered states, distinguishable by edge transport and circular dichroism. N…
We theoretically investigated the Floquet states of bilayer graphene heterostructure under the irradiation by horizontally incident circular polarized light. The in-plane and out-of-plane electric field of the light periodically perturbs the intra-layer and inter-layer hopping, respectively. For circular polarized light, the two components of the electric field has $π/2$ phase difference, so that the two types of hopping are periodically perturbed with the $π/2$ phase difference, which modify the effective inter-layer hopping. We focus on the model of bilayer graphene in the heterostructure of…
We explore a network of electronic quantum valley Hall (QVH) states in the moiré crystal of minimally twisted bilayer graphene. In our transport measurements we observe Fabry-Pérot and Aharanov-Bohm oscillations which are robust in magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 8T, in strong contrast to more conventional 2D systems where trajectories in the bulk are bent by the Lorentz force. This persistence in magnetic field and the linear spacing in density indicate that charge carriers in the bulk flow in topologically protected, one dimensional channels. With this work we demonstrate coherent electron…
Twisted Bilayer Graphene at the magic twist angle features flat energy bands, which lead to superconductivity and strong correlation physics. These unique properties are typically limited to a narrow range of twist angles around the magic angle with a small allowed tolerance. Here we report on a mechanism that enables flattening of the band-structure using coherent optical illumination, leading to emergence of flat isolated Floquet-Bloch bands. We show that the effect can be realized with relatively weak optical beams at the visible-infrared range (below the material bandwidth) and persist for…
The magnetic field generated Hofstadter butterfly in single-twist trilayer graphene (TLG) is investigated using circularly polarized light (CPL) and longitudinal light emanating from a waveguide. We show that single-twist TLG has two distinct chiral limits in the equilibrium state, and the central branch of the butterfly splits into two precisely degenerate components. The Hofstadter butterfly appears to be more discernible. We also discovered that CPL causes a large gap opening at the central branch of the Hofstadter butterfly energy spectrum and between the Landau levels, with a clear asymme…
In gated bilayer graphene, topological zero-line modes (ZLMs) appear along lines separating regions with opposite valley Hall topologies. Although it is experimentally difficult to design the electric gates to realize ZLMs due to the extremely challenging techniques, twisted bilayer graphene provides a natural platform to produce ZLMs in the presence of uniform electric field. In this Letter, we develop a set of wavepacket dynamics, which can be utilized to characterize various gapless edge modes and can quantitatively reproduce the electronic transport properties at topological intersections.…
