We study theoretically AB-stacked honeycomb bilayers driven by light in resonance with an infrared phonon within a tight-binding description. We characterize the phonon properties of honeycomb bilayers with group theory and construct an electronic time-dependent tight-binding model for the system following photo-excitation in resonance with an infrared phonon. We adopt an "atomically adiabatic" approximation, introduced by Mohantya and Heller PNAS 116, 18316 (2019) to describe classically vibrating nuclei, but obtain the Floquet quasienergy spectrum associated with the time-dependent model exactly. We introduce a general scheme to disentangle the complex low-frequency Floquet spectrum to elucidate the relevant Floquet bands. As a prototypical example, we consider bilayer graphene. We find that light in the low-frequency regime can induce a bandgap in the quasienergy spectrum in the vicinity of the K points even if it is linearly polarized, in contrast with the expectations within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the high-frequency regime. Finally, we analyze the diabaticity of the driven electron and driven phonon processes and found contrasting effects on the autocorrelation functions at the same driving frequency: driven phonons preserve the character of the initial state while driven electrons exhibit strong deviations within a few drive cycles. The procedure outlined here can be applied to other materials to describe the combined effects of low-frequency light on phonons and electrons.
We report the design of a diamond-based honeycomb phononic network, in which a mechanical resonator couples to three distinct phononic crystal waveguides. This two-dimensional (2D) phononic network extends an earlier study on one-dimensional (1D) phononic networks with closed mechanical subsystems. With a special design for the phononic band structures of the waveguides, any two neighboring resonators in the 2D network and the waveguide between them can form a closed mechanical subsystem, which enables nearest neighbor coupling and at the same time circumvents the scaling problems inherent in …
In this brief report, we show the equivalence between the tight-binding descriptions of the monolayer and bilayer honeycomb lattices. With appropriate value of the third nearest neighbors coupling, the Hamiltonian for a monolayer is equivalent to the low energy effective Hamiltonian for bilayer in the presence of trigonal warping. A simple physical argument is provided to explain this correspondance.
Here, we propose quantum spin Hall-like phononic states in van der Waals bilayer systems with antiferromagnetic ordering. Antiferromagnetic ordering in bilayer systems with small interlayer interaction makes the total Chern number zero, where the Chern numbers for each layer are opposite to each other. In bilayer CrI3 where antiferromagnetic ordering has been experimentally demonstrated, we show that the quantum spin Hall-like states appear with spatially separated chiral edge modes.
Thanks to the recent discovery on the magic-angle bilayer graphene, twistronics is quickly becom11 ing a burgeoning field in condensed matter physics. This letter expands the realm of twistronics to acoustics by introducing twisted bilayer phononic graphene, which remarkably also harbors the magic angle, evidenced by the associated ultra-flat bands. Beyond mimicking quantum mechanical behaviors of twisted bilayer graphene, we show that their acoustic counterpart offers a considerably more straightforward and robust way to alter the interlayer hopping strength, enabling us to unlock magic angle…
Artificial honeycomb lattices with Dirac cone dispersion provide a macroscopic platform to study the massless Dirac quasiparticles and their novel geometric phases. In this paper, a quadruple-degenerate state is achieved at the center of Brillouin zone (BZ) in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice phononic crystal, which is a result of accidental degeneracy of two double-degenerate states. In the vicinity of the quadruple-degenerate state, the dispersion relation is linear. Such quadruple degeneracy is analyzed by rigorous representation theory of groups. Using method, a reduced Hamiltonian is o…
We reveal the rich magnon topology in honeycomb bilayer ferromagnets (HBF) induced by the combined effect of interlayer exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and electrostatic doping (ED). In particular, we present a systematic study of the Hamiltonian non-adiabatic evolution in the HBF parametric space, spanned by the symmetry-breaking terms (DMI and ED) and interlayer exchange. We determine the band closure manifolds which are found to divide the parametric space into six distinct regions, matched with five distinct topological phases and one topologically trivial phase. The cha…
In this Letter, we study the magnetic transport in AA-stacked bilayer honeycomb chiral magnets coupled either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically. For both couplings, we observe chirality-induced gaps, chiral protected edge states, magnon Hall and magnon spin Nernst effects of magnetic spin excitations. For ferromagnetically coupled layers, thermal Hall and spin Nernst conductivities do not change sign as function of magnetic field or temperature similar to single-layer honeycomb ferromagnetic insulator. In contrast, for antiferromagnetically coupled layers, we observe a sign change in …
Search for higher-order topological insulators, characterized by topologically protected gapless boundary states of codimension higher than one, in bosonic systems has attracted growing interest. Here, we establish twisted bilayer honeycomb magnets as a new platform for hosting second-order topological magnon insulators (SOTMIs) without fine-tuning. We employ a simple, minimal Heisenberg spin model to describe misaligned bilayer sheets of honeycomb ferromagnetic magnets with a large commensurate twist angle. We found that the higher-order topology in this bilayer system shows a significant dep…
We investigate the instabilities of interacting electrons on the honeycomb bilayer by means of the functional renormalization group for a range of interactions up to the third-nearest neighbor. Besides a novel instability toward a gapless charge-density wave we find that using interaction parameters as determined by ab-initio calculations for graphene and graphite puts the system close to the boundary between antiferromagnetic and quantum spin Hall instabilities. Importantly, the energy scales for these instabilities are large such that imperfections and deviations from the basic model are exp…
Using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, functional renormalization group calculations and mean-field theory, we study the Hubbard model on the Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayer at half-filling as a model system for bilayer graphene. The free bands consisting of two Fermi points with quadratic dispersions lead to a finite density of states at the Fermi level, which triggers an antiferromagnetic instability that spontaneously breaks sublattice and spin rotational symmetry once local Coulomb repulsions are introduced. Our results reveal an inhomogeneous participation of the spin mo…
We introduce a microscopic model on the honeycomb bilayer, which in the small-momentum limit captures the usual (quadratic dispersion in kinetic term) description of bilayer graphene. In the limit of strong interlayer hopping it reduces to an effective honeycomb monolayer model with also third neighbor hopping. We study interaction effects in this effective model focusing on possible superconducting instabilities. We find d_{x^2-y^2} superconductivity in the strong coupling limit of an effective tJ-model-like description that gradually transforms into d + id time-reversal symmetry breaking sup…
We derive ground state wave functions of superconducting instabilities on the honeycomb lattice induced by nearest-neighbor attractive interactions. They reflect the Dirac nature of electrons in the low-energy limit. For the order parameter that is the same irrespective of the direction to any of the nearest neighbors we find weak pairing (slowly decaying) behavior in the orbital part of the Cooper pair with no angular dependence. At the neutrality point, in the spin-singlet case, we recover a strong pairing behavior. We also derive ground state wave functions for the superconductivity on the …
We present the electronic band structures of states with the same symmetry as the three-sublattice planar antiferromagnetic order of the triangular lattice. Such states can also be defined on the honeycomb lattice provided the spin density waves lie on the bonds. We identify cases which are consistent with observations on twisted bilayer graphene: a correlated insulator with an energy gap, yielding a single doubly-degenerate Fermi surface upon hole doping. We also discuss extensions to metallic states which preserve spin rotation invariance, with fluctuating spin density waves and bulk $\mathb…
A unified form of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking terms in phononic crystals, leading to nontrivial phononic topology, has been proposed recently, but is contradicted by some other works which introduce gyroscopic effect as TRS-breaking. We re-study gyroscopic phononic crystals using Newtonian mechanical method, and find the correct TRS-breaking term in consistent with the unified form. Applying this term we calculate the basic topological phononics in a honeycomb lattice. Furthermore, we study nonlinear phonon-phonon scattering effect on topological phononic edge states by molecular dyn…
We use the methods of topological quantum chemistry to explore the topology of phonons on time-reversal symmetric crystals with the structure of the planar honeycomb (layer group $p6/mmm$). This approach is not tied to a particular model of atomic vibrations, but is applied to the most general dynamical matrix constrained only by the symmetries of the system. We show that four distinct fragile topological phonon phases are generically possible. Truncating the dynamical matrix to third nearest neighbors yields a model that realizes the different phonon topologies, characterized by the existence…
In two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets, anisotropy is essential for the magnetic ordering as dictated by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. But when competing anisotropies are present, the phase transition becomes nontrivial. Here, utilizing highly sensitive susceptometry of scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy, we probe the spin correlations of ABC-stacked CrBr3 under zero magnetic field. We identify a plateau feature in susceptibility above the critical temperature (Tc) in thick samples. It signifies a crossover regime induced by the competition between easy-plane intralayer…
Using a weak-coupling renormalization group formalism, we study competing ordered phases for repulsively interacting fermions on the bilayer honeycomb lattice away from half-filling, which is realized experimentally as doped bilayer graphene. As electrons are added to the system, excitonic order is suppressed, and unconventional superconductivity appears generically in its place. In general it is found that the maximum critical temperature for superconductivity appears directly adjacent to the dome of particle-hole order, illustrating the importance of fluctuations in these channels for the fo…
A two-dimensional mass-spring system with Honeycomb lattice for mimicking phononic quantum Hall effect is proposed. Its band structure shows the existence of Dirac cones and unconventional edge states that is similar to the vibrational modes in graphene. Interestingly, as the system is placed on a constantly rotational coordinate system, the Coriolis force resulted from the non-inertial reference frame provides a possibility to break the time-reversal symmetry. Thus, caused from topologically non-trivial band gaps, phononic edge states are present between bands, which are verified by the calcu…
Recently a stable monolayer of antimony in buckled honeycomb structure called antimonene was successfully grown on 3D topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$, which displays semiconducting properties. By first principle calculations, we systematically investigate the phononic, electronic and optical properties of $α-$ and $β-$ allotropes of monolayer arsenene/antimonene. We investigate the dynamical stabilities of these four materials by considering the phonon dispersions. The obtained electronic structures reveal the direct band gap of monolayer $α-$As/Sb and indirect band gap of …
Motivated by recent developments in twisted bilayer graphene moiré superlattices, we investigate the effects of electron-electron interactions in a honeycomb lattice with an applied periodic potential using a finite-temperature Wilson-Fisher momentum shell renormalization group (RG) approach. We start with a low-energy effective theory for such a system, at first giving a discussion of the most general case in which no point group symmetry is preserved by the applied potential, and then focusing on the special case in which the potential preserves a $D_3$ point group symmetry. As in similar st…
We perform an analytical study of the energy and entanglement spectrum of non-interacting fermionic bilayer honeycomb lattices in the presence of trigonal warping in the energy spectrum, on-site energy difference and uniform magnetic field. Employing single particle correlation functions, we present an explicit form for layer-layer entanglement Hamiltonian whose spectrum is entanglement spectrum. We demonstrate that in the absence of trigonal warping, at zero on-site energy difference exact correspondence is established between entanglement spectrum and energy spectrum of monolayer which means…
In this paper, we derive lattice models for the narrow moiré bands of the AB-stacked twisted WSe$_2$ homobilayer through continuum model and Wannier orbital construction. Previous work has shown that an approximate SU(4) Hubbard model may be realized by combining spin and layer because inter-layer tunneling is suppressed due to spin $S_z$ conservation. However, Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) was ignored in the previous analysis. Here, we show that a Rashba SOC of reasonable magnitude can induce a finite but very small inter-layer hopping in the final lattice Hubbard model. At total filling $…
The structure optimization, phonon, and ab initio finite temperature molecular dynamics calculations have been performed to predict that bilayer silicene has stable structure with AB stacking geometry and is more favorable energetically to synthesize than monolayer silicene, a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with buckled geometry. Marvellously, its electronic bands show that the charge carriers behave like relativistic Dirac fermions with linear energy dispersions near the K points. An insightful analysis has been presented to understand the low-energy electronic excitations based on tight-b…
The introduction of 'twist' or relative rotation between two atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) membranes gives rise to periodic Moire potential, leading to a substantial altercation of the band structure of the planar assembly. While most of the recent experiments primarily focus on the electronic-band hybridization by probing in-plane transport properties, here we report out-of-plane thermoelectric measurements across the van der Waals gap in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), which exhibits an interplay of twist-dependent inter-layer electronic and phononic hybridization. We show that at a l…

Since their discovery, graphene-based systems represent an exceptional playground to explore the emergence of peculiar quantum effects. The present paper focuses on the anomalous appearence of strong infrared phonon resonances in the optical spectroscopy of bilayer graphene and on their pronounced Fano-like asymmetry, both tunable in gated devices. By developing a full microscopic many-body approach for the optical phonon response we explain how both effects can be quantitatively accounted for by the quantum interference of electronic and phononic excitations. We show that the phonon modes bor…
We develop an effective extended Hubbard model to describe the low-energy electronic properties of the twisted bilayer graphene. By using the Bloch states in the effective continuum model and with the aid of the maximally localized algorithm, we construct the Wannier orbitals and obtain an effective tight-binding model on the emergent honeycomb lattice. We found the Wannier state takes a peculiar three-peak form in which the amplitude maxima are located at the triangle corners surrounding the center. We estimate the direct Coulomb interaction and the exchange interaction between the Wannier st…
Ferromagnetic honeycomb systems are known to exhibit a magnonic topological phase under the existence of the next-nearest neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Motivated by the recent progress in the sublattice-specific control of magnetic anisotropy, we study the topological phase of magnon bands of honeycomb ferromagnetic monolayer and bilayer with the sublattice symmetry breaking due to the different anisotropy energy in the presence of the DMI. We show that there is a topological phase transition between the topological magnon insulator and the topologically trivial magnon phas…
We study the phase diagram of an effective model of competing nematic and antiferromagnetic orders of interacting electrons on the Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayer, as relevant for bilayer graphene. In the noninteracting limit, the model features a semimetallic ground state with quadratic band touching points at the Fermi level. Taking the effects of short-range interactions into account, we demonstrate the existence of an extended region in the mean-field phase diagram characterized by coexisting nematic and antiferromagnetic orders. By means of a renormalization group approach, we reveal tha…
We use the variational mean-field approach to systematically study the phase diagram of a bilayer heterostructure of the correlated transition metal oxide LaNiO3, grown along the (111) direction. The Ni 3+ ions with d7 (or eg1) configuration form a buckled honeycomb lattice. We show that as a function of the strength of the on-site interactions, various topological phases emerge. In the presence of a reasonable size of the Hund's coupling, as the correlation is tuned from intermediate to strong, the following sequence of phases is found: (1) a Dirac half-semimetal phase, (2) a quantum anomalou…
Stanene is a two-dimensional (2D) buckled honeycomb structure which has been studied recently owing to its promising electronic properties for potential electronic and spintronic applications in nanodevices. In this article, we present a first-principles study of electronic properties of fluorinated bilayer stanene. The effect of tensile strain, intrinsic spin-orbit, and van der Waals interactions are considered within the framework of density functional theory. The electronic band structure shows a very small overlap between valence and conduction bands at the Γ point which is a characteristi…
Twisted van der Waals bilayers provide an ideal platform to study the electron correlation in solids. Of particular interest is the 30 degree twisted bilayer honeycomb lattice system, which possesses an incommensurate Moire pattern and uncommon electronic behaviors may appear due to the absence of phase coherence. Such system is extremely sensitive to further twist and many intriguing phenomena will occur. In this work, we show that due to the twist induced spatial inhomogeneity of interlayer coupling, there emerges an U(1) gauge field in magnetic transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD) bilayer…
Combining tight-binding models and first principles calculations, we investigate the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect induced by intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in buckled honeycomb lattice with sp orbitals in an external exchange field. Detailed analysis reveals that nontrivial topological properties can arise utilizing not only spin but also orbital degrees of freedom in the strong SOC limit, when the bands acquire non-zero Chern numbers upon undergoing the so-called orbital purification. As a prototype of a buckled honeycomb lattice with strong SOC we choose the Bi(111) bilayer, anal…
We investigate the chirality of phonon modes in twisted bilayer WSe2 and demonstrate distinct chiral behavior of the $K/K^\prime$ valley phonons for twist angles close to $0^{\circ}$ and close to $60^{\circ}$. In particular, multiple chiral non-degenerate $K/K^\prime$ valley phonons are found for twist angles near $60^{\circ}$ whereas no non-degenerate chiral modes are found for twist angles close to $0^\circ$. Moreover, we discover two sets of emergent chiral valley modes that originate from an inversion symmetry breaking at the moiré scale and find similar modes in moiré patterns of strain-e…
According to electronic structure theory, bilayer graphene is expected to have anomalous electronic properties when it has long-period moiré patterns produced by small misalignments between its individual layer honeycomb lattices. We have realized bilayer graphene moiré crystals with accurately controlled twist angles smaller than 1 degree and studied their properties using scanning probe microscopy and electron transport. We observe conductivity minima at charge neutrality, satellite gaps that appear at anomalous carrier densities for twist angles smaller than 1 degree, and tunneling densitie…
