Motivated by the recent experimental realization of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers, we study a simplified model driven by different forms of monochromatic light. As a concrete and representative example we use parameters that correspond to a twisted MoTe$_2$ homobilayer. First, we consider irradiation with circularly polarized light in free space and demonstrate that the corresponding Floquet Hamiltonian takes the same form as the static Hamiltonian, only with a constant overall shift in quasi-energy. This is in stark contrast to twisted bilayer graphene, where new terms are typically generated under an analagous drive. Longitudinal light, on the other hand, which can be generated from the transverse magnetic mode in a waveguide, has a much more dramatic effect--it renormalizes the tunneling strength between the layers, which effectively permits the tuning of the twist angle {\em in-situ}. We find that, by varying the frequency and amplitude of the drive, one can induce a topological transition that cannot be obtained with the traditional form of the Floquet drive in free space. Furthermore, we find that strong drives can have a profound effect on the layer pseudospin texture of the twisted system, which coincides with multiple simultaneous band gap closings in the infinite-frequency limit. Surprisingly, these bandgap closings are not associated with topological transitions. For high but finite drive frequencies near $0.7$eV, the infinite-frequency band crossings become band gap minima of the order of $10^{-6}$ eV or smaller.
We show that moiré bands of twisted homobilayers can be topologically nontrivial, and illustrate the tendency by studying valence band states in $\pm K$ valleys of twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides, in particular, bilayer MoTe$_2$. Because of the large spin-orbit splitting at the monolayer valence band maxima, the low energy valence states of the twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ at $+K$ ($-K$) valley can be described using a two-band model with a layer-pseudospin magnetic field $\boldsymbolΔ(\boldsymbol{r})$ that has the moiré period. We show that $\boldsymbolΔ(\boldsymbol{r})$ has a to…
The spatial texture of internal degree of freedom of electrons has profound effects on the properties of materials. Such texture in real space can manifest as an emergent magnetic field (or Berry curvature), which is expected to induce interesting valley/spin-related transport phenomena. Moiré pattern, which emerges as a spatial variation at the interface of 2D atomic crystals, provides a natural platform for investigating such real space Berry curvature effects. Here we study moiré structures formed in homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) due to twisting, various uniform strain…
Twistronic assembly of 2D materials employs the twist angle between adjacent layers as a tuning parameter for designing the electronic and optical properties of van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we study how interlayer hybridization, weak ferroelectric charge transfer between layers, and piezoelectric response to deformations set the valence and conduction band edges across the moir{é} supercell in twistronic homobilayers of MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We show that, due to the lack of inversion symmetry in the monolayer crystals, bilayers with parallel (P) and anti-parallel (AP)…
We study the transport properties of a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) ribbon subject to a time periodic circularly polarized laser field. First, we calculate the quasienergy spectrum within the framework of the Floquet theory and analyze the nontrivial topology of the Floquet bulk gaps. The later is revealed by the presence of chiral edge states inside the bulk gaps in finite samples, in agreement with the calculation of the appropriate winding numbers as a function of both the energy and the amplitude of the laser field. The effect of the time dependent perturbation on the e…
Recent experiments have observed correlated insulating and possible superconducting phases in twisted homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Besides the spin-valley locked moire bands due to the intrinsic Ising spin-orbit coupling, homobilayer moire TMDs also possess either logarithmic or power-law divergent Van Hove singularities (VHS) near the Fermi surface, controllable by an external displacement field. The former and the latter are dubbed conventional and higher-order VHS, respectively. Here, we perform a perturbative renormalization group (RG) analysis to unbiasedly study t…
We predict that in a twisted homobilayer of transition-metal dichalcogenide MoS$_2$, spin-orbit coupling in the conduction band states from $\pm K$ valleys can give rise to moiré flat bands with nonzero Chern numbers in each valley. The nontrivial band topology originates from a unique combination of angular twist and local mirror symmetry breaking in each individual layer, which results in unusual skyrmionic spin textures in momentum space with skyrmion number $\mathcal{S} = \pm 2$. Our Hartree-Fock analysis further suggests that density-density interactions generically drive the system at $1…
The valence band maxima of most group-VI transition metal dichalcogenide thin films remain at the $Γ$-point all the way from bulk to bilayer. In this paper we develop a continuum theory of the moirè minibands that are formed in the valence bands of $Γ$-valley homobilayers by a small relative twist. Our effective theory is benchmarked against large-scale ab initio electronic structure calculations that account for lattice relaxation. As a consequence of an emergent $D_6$ symmetry we find that low-energy $Γ$-valley moirè holes differ qualitatively from their K-valley counterparts addressed previ…
Geometrical moiré patterns, generic for almost aligned bilayers of two-dimensional (2D) crystals with similar lattice structure but slightly different lattice constants, lead to zone folding and miniband formation for electronic states. Here, we show that moiré superlattice (mSL) effects in $\mathrm{MoSe}_2/\mathrm{WS}_2$ and $\mathrm{MoTe}_2/\mathrm{MoSe}_2$ heterobilayers that feature alignment of the band edges are enhanced by resonant interlayer hybridization, and anticipate similar features in twisted homobilayers of TMDs, including examples of narrow minibands close to the actual band ed…
We reveal by first-principles calculations that the interlayer binding in a twisted MoS2/MoTe2 heterobilayer decreases with increasing twist angle, due to the increase of the interlayer overlapping degree, a geometric quantity describing well the interlayer steric effect. The binding energy is found to be a Gaussian-like function of twist angle. The resistance to rotation, an analogue to the interlayer sliding barrier, can also be defined accordingly. In sharp contrast to the case of MoS2 homobilayer, here the energy band gap reduces with increasing twist angle. We find a remarkable interlayer…
We present a comprehensive dynamical mean field study of the triangular lattice moiré Hubbard model, which is believed to represent the physics of moiré bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides. In these materials, important aspects of the band structure including the bandwidth and the order and location of van Hove singularities can be tuned by varying the interlayer potential. We present a magnetic and metal-insulator phase diagram and a detailed study of the dependence of the resistivity on temperature, band filling and interlayer potential. We find that transport displays Fermi liquid, str…
Moiré superlattices serve as a playground for emerging phenomena, such as localization of band states, superconductivity, and localization of excitons. These superlattices are large and are often modeled in the zero angle limit, which obscures the effect of finite twist angles. Here, by means of first-principles calculations we quantify the twist-angle dependence of the moiré potential in the MoS$_2$ homobilayer and identify the contributions from the constituent elements of the moiré potential. Furthermore, by considering the zero-angle limit configurations, we show that the moiré potential i…
The valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall (VQAH) state, which forwards a strategy for combining valleytronics and spintronics with nontrivial topology, attracts intensive interest in condensed-matter physics. So far, the explored VQAH states have still been limited to magnetic systems. Here, using the low-energy effective model and Floquet theorem, we propose a different mechanism to realize the Floquet VQAH state in nonmagnetic heterobilayers under light irradiation. We then realize this proposal via first-principles calculations in transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers, which init…
The long wavelength moiré superlattices in twisted 2D structures have emerged as a highly tunable platform for strongly correlated electron physics. We study the moiré bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers, focusing on WSe$_2$, at small twist angles using a combination of first principles density functional theory, continuum modeling, and Hartree-Fock approximation. We reveal the rich physics at small twist angles $θ<4^\circ$, and identify a particular magic angle at which the top valence moiré band achieves almost perfect flatness. In the vicinity of this magic angle, …

We report on a possible optical tuning of the spin Hall conductivity in mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides. Light beams of frequencies much higher than the energy scale of the system (the \textit{off-resonant} condition) does not excite electrons but rearranges the band structure. The rearrangement is quantitatively established using the Floquet formalism. For such a system of mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, the spin Hall conductivity (calculated with the Kubo expression in presence of disorder) exhibits a drop at higher frequencies and lower intensities. Finally, we comp…
We present an experimental proposal to tune the effective lattice structure in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers with time-periodic Floquet drive. We show that elliptically polarized light with sub-terahertz frequencies $\hbarω\sim 1$ meV and moderate electric fields $E\sim0.2$~MV/cm allows tuning between the native triangular lattice and a square lattice, while linearly polarized light enables dimensional reduction to a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. Without drive, these twisted TMDs simulate the single band Fermi-Hubbard model; we show that this approximation stil…
We review recent work on low-frequency Floquet engineering and its application to quantum materials driven by light, emphasizing van der Waals systems hosting Moiré superlattices. These non-equilibrium systems combine the twist-angle sensitivity of the band structures with the flexibility of light drives. The frequency, amplitude, and polarization of light can be easily tuned in experimental setups, leading to platforms with on-demand properties. First, we review recent theoretical developments to derive effective Floquet Hamiltonians in different frequency regimes. We apply some of these theo…
Moire superlattices in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers have emerged as a rich platform for exploring strong correlations using optical spectroscopy. Despite observation of rich Mott-Wigner physics stemming from an interplay between the periodic potential and Coulomb interactions, the absence of tunnel coupling induced hybridization of electronic states ensured a classical layer degree of freedom in these experiments. Here, we investigate a MoSe$_2$ homobilayer structure where inter-layer coherent tunnelling and layer-selective optical transitions allow for electric field contr…
Manipulating materials properties far from equilibrium recently garnered significant attention, with experimental emphasis on transient melting, enhancement, or induction of electronic order. A more tantalizing aspect of the matter-light interaction regards the possibility to access dynamical steady states with distinct non-equilibrium phase transitions to affect electronic transport. Here, we show that the interplay of crystal symmetry and optical pumping of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) provides a novel avenue to engineer topologically-protected chiral edge modes. In sta…
Twisted Van der Waals systems offer the unprecedented possibility to tune different states of correlated quantum matter with an external non-invasive electrostatic doping. The nature of the superconducting order presents a recurring open question in this context. In this work, we quantitatively assess the case of spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing for $Γ$-valley twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers. We self-consistently and dynamically calculate the doping dependent superconducting transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ revealing a superconducting dome with a maximal $T_{\mathr…

A circularly polarized a.c. pump field illuminated near resonance on two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) produces an anomalous Hall effect in response to a d.c. bias field. In this work, we develop a theory for this photo-induced anomalous Hall effect in undoped TMDs irradiated by a strong coherent laser field. The strong field renormalizes the equilibrium bands and opens up a dynamical energy gap where single-photon resonance occurs. The resulting photon dressed states, or Floquet states, are treated within the rotating wave approximation. A quantum kinetic equation approa…
The advent of twisted moiré heterostructures as a playground for strongly correlated electron physics has led to a plethora of experimental and theoretical efforts seeking to unravel the nature of the emergent superconducting and insulating states. Amongst these layered compositions of two dimensional materials, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are by now appreciated as highly-tunable platforms to simulate reinforced electronic interactions in the presence of low-energy bands with almost negligible bandwidth. Here, we focus on the twisted homobilayer WSe$_2$ and the insulating phase at …
Excitons in monolayer semiconductors have large optical transition dipole for strong coupling with light field. Interlayer excitons in heterobilayers, with layer separation of electron and hole components, feature large electric dipole that enables strong coupling with electric field and exciton-exciton interaction, at the cost that the optical dipole is substantially quenched (by several orders of magnitude). In this letter, we demonstrate the ability to create a new class of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero- and homo-bilayers that combines the advantages of monolayer-…

The interaction between light and matter can give rise to novel topological states. This principle was recently exemplified in Floquet topological insulators, where \emph{classical} light was used to induce a topological electronic band structure. Here, in contrast, we show that mixing \emph{single} photons with excitons can result in new topological polaritonic states --- or "topolaritons". Taken separately, the underlying photons and excitons are topologically trivial. Combined appropriately, however, they give rise to non-trivial polaritonic bands with chiral edge modes allowing for unidire…
