The parameters of the triangular domain wall network in bilayer graphene with a simultaneously twisted and biaxially stretched bottom layer are studied using the two-chain Frenkel-Kontorova model. It is demonstrated that if the graphene layers are free to rotate, they prefer to stay co-aligned upon stretching the bottom layer and the regular triangular network of tensile domain walls is formed upon the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition. If the angle between the layers is fixed, the regular triangular network of shear domain walls is observed at zero elongation of the bottom layer. Upon stretching the bottom layer, however, the domain walls transform into the tensile ones and the size of the commensurate domains decreases. We also show that the parameters of the isosceles triangular domain wall network in twisted bilayer graphene under shear strain can be determined through purely geometrical considerations. Experimental analysis of the orientation of domain walls and period of the triangular network would, on the one hand, contribute to understanding of the interlayer interaction of graphene layers, and, on the other hand, serve for detection of relative strains and rotation between the layers. Vice versa external strains can be used to control the parameters of the triangular domain wall network and, therefore, electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene.
Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect, the well-known archetype of electron-wave interference phenomena, has been explored extensively through transport measurements. However, these techniques lack spatial resolution that would be indispensable for studying the magnetic and electrostatic AB oscillations at the nanometer scale. Here, we demonstrated that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can be used as an AB interferometer operating on nanometer length scales and the magneto-electric Aharonov-Bohm effect in minimally twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) was directly measured by using STM. In the minimally TBG,…
In minimally twisted bilayer graphene, a moir{é} pattern consisting of AB and BA stacking regions separated by domain walls forms. These domain walls are predicted to support counterpropogating topologically protected helical (TPH) edge states when the AB and BA regions are gapped. We fabricate designer moir{é} crystals with wavelengths longer than 50 nm and demonstrate the emergence of TPH states on the domain wall network by scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. We observe a double-line profile of the TPH states on the domain walls, only occurring when the AB and BA regions are gappe…
We investigate transport in the network of valley Hall states that emerges in minimally twisted bilayer graphene under interlayer bias. To this aim, we construct a scattering theory that captures the network physics. In the absence of forward scattering, symmetries constrain the network model to a single parameter that interpolates between one-dimensional chiral zigzag modes and pseudo-Landau levels. Moreover, we show how the coupling of zigzag modes affects magnetotransport. In particular, we find that scattering between parallel zigzag channels gives rise to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations that a…
We construct an effective Floquet lattice model for the triangular network that emerges in interlayer-biased minimally twisted bilayer graphene and which supports two chiral channels per link for a given valley and spin. We introduce the Floquet scheme with the one-channel triangular network and subsequently extend it to the two-channel case. From the bulk topological index (winding number) and finite system calculations, we find that both cases host anomalous Floquet insulators (AFIs) with a different gap-opening mechanism. In the one-channel network, either time-reversal or in-plane inversio…
We study the electronic transport properties at the intersection of three topological zero-lines as the elementary current partition node that arises in minimally twisted bilayer graphene. Unlike the partition laws of two intersecting zero-lines, we find that (i) the incoming current can be partitioned into both left-right adjacent topological channels and that (ii) the forward-propagating current is nonzero. By tuning the Fermi energy from the charge-neutrality point to a band edge, the currents partitioned into the three outgoing channels become nearly equal. Moreover, we find that current p…
Quasi-periodic moiré patterns and their effect on electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) have been intensely studied. At small twist angle $θ$, due to atomic reconstruction, the moiré superlattice morphs into a network of narrow domain walls separating micron-scale AB and BA stacking regions. We use scanning probe photocurrent imaging to resolve nanoscale variations of the Seebeck coefficient occurring at these domain walls. The observed features become enhanced in a range of mid-infrared frequencies where the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which we use as a TBG substrate, is …
We construct a two-channel scattering model for the triangular network of valley Hall states in interlayer-biased minimally twisted bilayer graphene from symmetry arguments and investigate electronic transport in a four-terminal setup. In the absence of forward scattering, a single phenomenological parameter tunes the network between a triplet of chiral zigzag modes and pseudo-Landau levels. Moreover, the chiral zigzag modes give rise to robust Aharonov-Bohm resonances in the longitudinal conductance in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field or an in-plane electric field. Interestingly…
Single-layer and bilayer carbon and hexagonal boron nitride nanoscrolls as well as nanoscrolls made of bilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride heterostructure are considered. Structures of stable states of the corresponding nanoscrolls prepared by rolling single-layer and bilayer rectangular nanoribbons are obtained based on the analytical model and numerical calculations. The lengths of nanoribbons for which stable and energetically favorable nanoscrolls are possible are determined. Barriers to rolling of single-layer and bilayer nanoribbons into nanoscrolls and barriers to nanoscroll unroll…
We derive a general relation between the stacking vector ${\bf u}$ describing the relative shift of two layers of bilayer graphene and the Chern index. We find $C = ν- \text{sign}\left(|V_{AB}|-|V_{BA}|\right)$, where $ν$ is a valley index and $|V_{αβ}|$ the absolute value of stacking potentials that depend on ${\bf u}$ and that uniquely determine the interlayer interaction; AA stacking plays no role in the topological character. With this expression we show that while ideal and relaxed minimally twisted bilayer graphene appear so distinct as to be almost different materials, their Chern index…
Bilayer graphene provides a unique platform to explore the rich physics in quantum Hall effect. The unusual combination of spin, valley and orbital degeneracy leads to interesting symmetry broken states with electric and magnetic field. Conventional transport measurements like resistance measurements have been performed to probe the different ordered states in bilayer graphene. However, not much work has been done to directly map the energetics of those states in bilayer graphene. Here, we have carried out the magneto capacitance measurements with electric and magnetic field in a hexagonal bor…
We theoretically study the Hofstadter butterfly of a triangular network model in minimally twisted bilayer graphene (mTBLG). The band structure manifests periodicity in energy, mimicking that of Floquet systems. The butterfly diagrams provide fingerprints of the model parameters and reveal the hidden band topology. In a strong magnetic field, we establish that mTBLG realizes low-energy Floquet topological insulators (FTIs) carrying zero Chern number, while hosting chiral edge states in bulk gaps. We identify the FTIs by analyzing the nontrivial spectral flow in the Hofstadter butterfly, and by…
We study phenomena driven by electron-electron interactions in the minimally twisted bilayer graphene (mTBLG) with a perpendicular electric field. The low-energy degrees of freedom in mTBLG are governed by a network of one-dimensional domain-wall states, described by two channels of one-dimensional linearly dispersing spin-1/2 fermions. We show that the interaction can realize a spin-gapped inter-channel charge density wave (CDW) state at low temperatures, forming a "Coulomb drag" between the channels and leaving only one charge conducting mode. For sufficiently high temperatures, power-law-in…
We identify a mapping between two-dimensional (2D) electron transport in a minimally twisted graphene bilayer and a 1D quantum walk, where one spatial dimension plays the role of time. In this mapping a magnetic field B perpendicular to the bilayer maps onto an electric field. Bloch oscillations due to the periodic motion in a 1D Bloch band can then be observed in purely DC transport as magnetoconductance oscillations with periodicity set by the Bloch frequency.
Theory predicts that the application of an electric field breaks the inversion symmetry of AB and BA stacked domains in twisted bilayer graphene, resulting in the formation of a triangular network of one-dimensional valley-protected helical states. This two-dimensional network of one-dimensional states has been observed in several studies, but direct experimental evidence that the electronic transport in these one-dimensional states is valley-protected is still lacking. In this study, we report the existence of the network in small-angle twisted bilayer graphene at room temperature. Moreover, …
Diverse interlayer tunability of physical properties of two-dimensional layers mostly lies in the covalent-like quasi-bonding that is significant in electronic structures but rather weak for energetics. Such characteristics result in various stacking orders that are energetically comparable but may significantly differ in terms of electronic structures, e.g. magnetism. Inspired by several recent experiments showing interlayer anti-ferromagnetically coupled CrI3 bilayers, we carried out first-principles calculations for CrI3 bilayers. We found that the anti-ferromagnetic coupling results from a…
We explore a network of electronic quantum valley Hall (QVH) states in the moiré crystal of minimally twisted bilayer graphene. In our transport measurements we observe Fabry-Pérot and Aharanov-Bohm oscillations which are robust in magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 8T, in strong contrast to more conventional 2D systems where trajectories in the bulk are bent by the Lorentz force. This persistence in magnetic field and the linear spacing in density indicate that charge carriers in the bulk flow in topologically protected, one dimensional channels. With this work we demonstrate coherent electron…
The electronic dispersion of a graphene bilayer is highly dependent on rotational mismatch between layers and can be further manipulated by electrical gating. This allows for an unprecedented control over electronic properties and opens up the possibility of flexible band structure engineering. Here we present novel magnetotransport data in a twisted bilayer, crossing the energetic border between decoupled monolayers and coupled bilayer. In addition a transition in Berry phase between pi and 2pi is observed at intermediate magnetic fields. Analysis of Fermi velocities and gate induced charge c…
We report the experimental observation of sublattice-resolved resonant scattering in bilayer graphene by performing simultaneous cryogenic atomic hydrogen doping and electron transport measurements in ultrahigh vacuum. This allows us to monitor the hydrogen adsorption on the different sublattices of bilayer graphene without atomic-scale microscopy. Specifically, we detect two distinct resonant scattering peaks in the gate-dependent resistance, which evolve as a function of atomic hydrogen dosage. Theoretical calculations show that one of the peaks originates from resonant scattering by hydroge…
We present atomistic calculations on structural and electronic properties of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) consisting of two sets of rotationally misaligned Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. Obtained equilibrium atomic structures exhibit in-plane strains and the modulation of the interlayer distances at the rotationally mismatched interface layers. We find that the electronic structure of TDBG can have an intrinsic band gap at the charge neutral point for a large range of the twist angle theta. Near theta = 1.25 degree, the intrinsic band gap disappears and TDBG hosts flat bands at the…
Intercalation of lithium atoms between layers of 2D materials can alter their atomic and electronic structure. We investigate effects of Li intercalation in twisted bilayers of the transition metal dichalcogenide MoS$_2$ through first-principles calculations, tight-binding parameterization based on the Wannier transformation, and analysis of moiré band structures through an effective continuum model. The energetic stability of different intercalation sites for Li between layers of MoS$_2$ are classified according to the local coordination type and the number of vertically aligned Mo atoms, sug…
Based on ab initio calculations, we study the effect of intercalating twisted bilayer graphene with carbon. Surprisingly, we find that the intercalant pulls the atoms in the two layers closer together locally when placed in certain regions in between the layers, and the process is energetically favorable as well. This arises because in these regions of the supercell, the local environment allows the intercalant to form tetrahedral bonding with nearest atoms in the layers. Intercalating AB- or AA-bilayer graphene with carbon does not produce this effect; therefore, the nontrivial effect owes it…
Gapless bilayer graphene is susceptible to a variety of spontaneously gapped states. As predicted by theory and observed by experiment, the ground state is however topologically trivial, because a valley-independent gap is energetically favorable. Here, we show that under the application of interlayer electric field and circularly polarized light, one valley can be selected to exhibit the original interaction instability while the other is frozen out. Tuning this Floquet system stabilizes multiple competing topological ordered states, distinguishable by edge transport and circular dichroism. N…
The two-chain Frenkel-Kontorova model is applied for an analytical description of the energy and structure of the network of domain walls in bilayer graphene. Using this approach, the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition upon biaxial stretching of one of the graphene layers is considered. We demonstrate that formation of the equilateral triangular network of domain walls becomes energetically favourable above the critical relative biaxial elongation of the bottom layer of $3.0\cdot 10^{-3}$. It is shown that the optimal period of the triangular network of domain walls is inversely prop…
Excitons in bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (2L-TMDs) are Coulomb-bound electron/hole pairs that can be viewed as broadly tunable analogs of atomic or molecular systems. Here, we study the properties of 2L-TMD excitons under strong electric field. To overcome the field limit, reached in previous experiments, we developed a new organic/inorganic molecular gating technique. Our approach allows reaching the field > 0.27 V nm-1, about twice higher than previously available. Under this field inter and intra-layer excitonic are brought into an energetic resonance, allowing us to discover ne…
The emergence of flat bands and correlated behaviors in 'magic angle' twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has sparked tremendous interest, though many aspects of the system are under intense debate. Here we report observation of both superconductivity and the Mott-like insulating state in a tBLG device with a twist angle of approximately 0.93, which is smaller than the magic angle by 15%. At an electron concentration of +/-5 electrons per moire unit cell, we observe a narrow resistance peak with an activation energy gap of approximately 0.1 meV, indicating the existence of an additional correlated…
We consider magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at filling $ν=+3$, where experiments have observed a robust quantized anomalous Hall effect. This has been attributed to the formation of a valley- and spin-polarized Chern insulating ground state that spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry, and is stabilized by a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate. We identify three different types of domain wall, and study their properties and energetic selection mechanisms via theoretical arguments and Hartree-Fock calculations adapted to deal with inhomogeneous moiré systems. We comment on th…

In gated bilayer graphene, topological zero-line modes (ZLMs) appear along lines separating regions with opposite valley Hall topologies. Although it is experimentally difficult to design the electric gates to realize ZLMs due to the extremely challenging techniques, twisted bilayer graphene provides a natural platform to produce ZLMs in the presence of uniform electric field. In this Letter, we develop a set of wavepacket dynamics, which can be utilized to characterize various gapless edge modes and can quantitatively reproduce the electronic transport properties at topological intersections.…
Van der Waals heterostructures form a massive interdisciplinary research field, fueled by the rich material science opportunities presented by layer assembly of artificial solids with controlled composition, order and relative rotation of adjacent atomic planes. Here we use atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy and multiscale modeling to show that the lattice of MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ bilayers twisted to a small angle, $θ<3^{\circ}$, reconstructs into energetically favorable stacking domains separated by a network of stacking faults. For crystal alignments close to 3R stacking, a tess…
In this work, we adopt first-principle calculations based on density functional theory and Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the adsorption and diffusion of lithium in bilayer graphene (BLG) as anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Based on energy barriers directly obtained from first-principle calculations for single-Li and two-Li intercalated BLG, a new equation was deduced for predicting energy barriers considering Li's interactions for multi-Li intercalated BLG. Our calculated results indicate that Li energetically prefers to intercalate within rather than adsorb outside the bilaye…
We investigate the effects of lithium intercalation in twisted bilayers of graphene, using first-principles electronic structure calculations. To model this system we employ commensurate supercells that correspond to twist angles of 7.34$^\circ$ and 2.45$^\circ$. From the energetics of lithium absorption we demonstrate that for low Li concentration the intercalants cluster in the AA regions with double the density of a uniform distribution. The charge donated by the Li atoms to the graphene layers results in modifications to the band structure that can be qualitatively captured using a continu…
Interlayer rotation angle couples strongly to the electronic states of twisted van der Waals layers. However, not every angle is energetically favorable. Recent experiments on rotation-tunable electronics reveal the existence of a discrete set of angles at which the rotation-tunable electronics assume the most stable configurations. Nevertheless, a quantitative map for locating these intrinsically preferred twist angles in twisted bilayer system has not been available, posing challenges for the on-demand design of twisted electronics that are intrinsically stable at desired twist angles. Here …
Berry phase plays an important role in determining many physical properties of quantum systems. However, a Berry phase altering energy spectrum of a quantum system is comparatively rare. Here, we report an unusual tunable valley polarized energy spectra induced by continuously tunable Berry phase in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene quantum dots. In our experiment, the Berry phase of electron orbital states is continuously tuned from about pi to 2pi by perpendicular magnetic fields. When the Berry phase equals pi or 2pi, the electron states in the two inequivalent valleys are energetically degen…
Monolayer graphene placed with a twist on top of AB-stacked bilayer graphene hosts topological flat bands in a wide range of twist angles. The dispersion of these bands and gaps between them can be efficiently controlled by a perpendicular electric field, which induces topological transitions accompanied by changes of the Chern numbers. In the regime where the applied electric field induces gaps between the flat bands, we find a relatively uniform distribution of the Berry curvature. Consequently, interaction-induced valley- and/or spin-polarized states at integer filling factors are energetic…
When twisted to angles near 1°, graphene multilayers provide a new window on electron correlation physics by hosting gate-tuneable strongly-correlated states, including insulators, superconductors, and unusual magnets. Here we report the discovery of a new member of the family, density-wave states, in double bilayer graphene twisted to 2.37°. At this angle the moiré states retain much of their isolated bilayer character, allowing their bilayer projections to be separately controlled by gates. We use this property to generate an energetic overlap between narrow isolated electron and hole bands …
The discovery of interaction-driven insulating and superconducting phases in moiré van der Waals heterostructures has sparked considerable interest in understanding the novel correlated physics of these systems. While a significant number of studies have focused on twisted bilayer graphene, correlated insulating states and a superconductivity-like transition up to 12 K have been reported in recent transport measurements of twisted double bilayer graphene. Here we present a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of gate-tunable twisted double bilayer graphene devices. We observe s…
Because of the ultra-low photon energies in the mid-infrared and terahertz frequencies, in these bands photodetectors are notoriously underdeveloped, and broadband single photon detectors (SPDs) are non-existent. Advanced SPDs exploit thermal effects in nano-structured superconductors, and their performance is currently limited to the more energetic near-infrared photons due to their high electronic heat capacity. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MAG) device that is capable of detecting single photons of ultra-low energies by utilizing its record-low…
Moiré superlattices in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide 20 an efficient way to engineer electron band properties. The recent discovery of exotic quantum phases and their interplay in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has built this moiré system one of the most renowned condensed matter platforms (1-10). So far the studies of tBLG has been mostly focused on the lowest two flat moiré bands at the first magic angle θm1 ~ 1.1°, leaving high-order moiré bands and magic angles largely unexplored. Here we report 25 an observation of multiple well-isolated flat moiré ban…
